Discover the Hidden Beaches in Bangkok for Your Tropical Escape
Thailand's capital and largest city, Bangkok, is well known for its thriving street life, active marketplaces, and historical sites. Bangkok does, however, conceal some secret beaches that provide a peaceful respite for anyone seeking a more relaxed and tranquil experience beyond the city's frenetic hustle. If you're organising a trip to Bangkok, think about visiting one of these undiscovered beaches for a fun change of pace:
Bang Krachao: It is an unforeseen sanctuary of lush flora and tranquil streams just a short distance from the busy city centre. This undiscovered treasure, also known as "Bangkok's Green Lung," may be reached by crossing the Chao Phraya River. When you get there, you'll discover quaint riverside paths and hidden locations with sand riverbanks. A lovely approach to get close to nature is to cycle along elevated walkways through mangroves and gardens or to stroll along them.
Ko Kret: A tiny island in the Chao Phraya River, is well-known for its traditional ceramics and peaceful atmosphere. It may not be a completely secret beach, but international tourists still don't know anything about it. You may find tranquil stretches of sand along Ko Kret's riverbanks where you can unwind and take in the gorgeous river views. The island's tranquil ambience makes it the ideal getaway from Bangkok's hectic streets.
Koh Larn: Although not precisely a secret gem, Koh Larn is a less-traveled beach town close to Bangkok. This beautiful island, which can be found in the Gulf of Thailand, has soft sand beaches, clean waters, and excellent snorkelling options. Take a quick ferry from Pattaya to Koh Larn and spend the day taking in the tranquilly and natural beauty of the island.
Bang Saen Beach: Bang Saen Beach, which is roughly an hour's drive from Bangkok, is a hidden gem that sees more locals than foreign visitors. Bang Saen Beach is the perfect destination for a day excursion from the city because of its expansive stretches of golden sand and crystal-clear waters. Along with lounging on the beach, adjacent attractions include the Wang Saen Suk Hell Garden and mouthwatering seafood restaurants.
Khao Laem Muak Beach: Khao Laem Muak Beach is a secret paradise encircled by stunning limestone cliffs and is located close to Hua Hin, about a three-hour drive from Bangkok. The beach is the ideal location for relaxing and unwinding away from the bustle of the city because of its serene atmosphere and breathtaking surroundings.
Consider adding a day or two to your Bangkok tour, so that you can see these undiscovered beaches. Bangkok is largely known for its metropolitan allure, but these peaceful beaches offer a novel viewpoint on the city and a chance to take in Thailand's coastal splendour in a more sedate environment.

#thailand #pattaya #phuket Tawaen Beach in Pattaya Thailand | Walk through Tawaen Beach Pattaya Thailand Of the several beaches on Koh Lahn, Tawaen Beach is the most popular. In this case, my definition of popular refers to being populated, very. Visitors arrive here en-mass from Pattaya and Bangkok, especially in the high season, and even more so on weekends and holidays. So my wife and her friends rented motorcycles to beat the crowd to the beach! Note: Koh Lahn is also referred to as Koh Larn, Koh Lan, and Coral Island. The Thai meaning of Koh Lahn translates to Million Island. Koh Lahn is approximately 8 kilometers from Pattaya, and of all the islands near Pattaya, it is the easiest to reach. This is a stunningly beautiful beach. The backdrop is beautiful forested hills that form a very picturesque bay. The water is clear and shallow, and the sand is soft and fine. I guess you could sum up by saying for some people, Tawaen Beach would be perfect if it was not so popular. Having clean shallow water and soft fine sand, Tawaen Beach is vastly superior to most of the beaches in Pattaya. There’s lots of room for children to paddle, fall over, or simply chill out. Lots of little beer bars and restaurants line the pathway behind Tawaen Beach, ideal if you like to sit and watch life go by, but the only view you’ll get of the beach from here is what’s visible through the mass of tourist bodies beneath and the canopy of parasols. There is a large safe swimming area, if you are on the northerly end of Tawaen Beach it’s a good idea to make sure your children don’t stray out of it, boats frequently come close to drop passengers off on the beach. Tawaen Beach is situated on the eastern coast of Koh Lahn, it runs in a north to south direction, and is roughly 800 meters long. At the northern point, there is a rocky outcrop, at the southern point there is the Tawaen Beach to Pattaya Bali Hai ferry terminal and an emergency medical facility (not sure if this is in use). Tawaen Beach is located in a small bay in the southeast of Lo Kan Island, also known as Coral Island. Picturesque hills covered in lush tropical flora surround the coast. The famous golden statue of sitting Buddha, along with a small buddhist temple and an observation deck that offers magnificent views of the sea and the island, is located on the hills above the beach. The beach is very clean and well-kept, but due to its crowdedness heaps of garbage can materialize by evening. They are, of course, taken care of before morning. Tawaen is extremely popular and always crowded. A lot of tourists come during holidays shared by the Southeast Asia countries. The period from November to March is considered the high season in Thailand. Comfortable air temperature, as well as minimal rainfall create optimal conditions for a beach holiday. Ko Lan Island has several small guest houses, 2-star and 3-star hotels with minimum conveniences, including suites with air conditioner or fan, toilet and shower, barbecue set and sometimes free Wi-Fi. The majority of tourists prefer to stay at Pattaya, where a lot more comfortable and cheap options are located. The ferry docks quite far from the beach. You can get to the beach via a long shadowy overpass. After relaxing on Tawaen you can take a walk around the island, look at sights and other beaches. Many tourists go far from Tawaen, where there are less people and therefore calmer and cleaner. You can also drive around Ko Lan on a rickshaw, a taxi-like vehicle. The beach is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas that occupy a lot of the beach. Renting them costs 100 Thai baht. A promenade stretches behind them, with many small restaurants, snack bars, stalls with food, beverages, various beach equipment and souvenirs. No chain stores operate here. Goods here are a lot more expensive than in Pattaya so it's recommended to bring anything necessary with you. Thai people are not accustomed to haggling. Paid showers (40 Thai baht) and toilets (10 Thai baht) are located behind the restaurants. No European restaurants here. You can only try local cuisine. Some restaurants hold culinary shows for their visitors. Many Asian fast food and beverage carriers work on the beach. There's a jet ski rental (1000 Thai baht for 10 minutes), boat and rubber ring rental etc. Rescue station, shooting range, first aid post and tour agencies operate here. please LIKE SHARE AND SUBSCRIBE .. Vacation? Oh come on! I don’t think I am the only person who loves vacation may it be long term or short term break. As a young professional my daily routines are composed of job related stuffs and having an extended weekend because of holidays is something that I look forward to.
Last July 27 – July 30, 2018. I had a four day off and I decided to go to Pattaya Island in Thailand since I haven’t been there before. I heard that Pattaya is one of the nearest beach place near Bangkok and really popular to most people from the City who wants to take a break but doesn’t really want to go too far.
On this trip, I was with of the best travel buddy in Thailand, Rose. Well technically we almost cancelled this trip, good thing we never did.
We planned it out the last minute, I ask Rose to come over my place at 12 midnight. We’ve decided to leave that morning at around 6 am. Everything seems to be on our side on this trip. We discovered that there is a bus station going to Pattaya near our place. The bus left at 7:30 AM and we arrived at Pattaya after 2 hours.
Pattaya Island is not as extravagant as the other beaches or island in Thailand, however if you are looking for a place where you can take a short break, this place has definitely a lot to offer.
Koh Larn Island is one of the main island near Pattaya, we took a 30-45 minutes ferry from Pattaya to Koh Larn. Upon arriving at Koh Larn, we decided to buy some snacks from 7/11 and from nearby stalls so we have something to eat at the beach. There’s a tuktok station near the pier, the drivers will let you choose a beach to visit. We chose Tien Beach as it doesn’t look too crowded. There were some restaurants that offers beach beds for only 50 baht. We really had so much fun in this trip, we lied down, swam and got sun. Tien beach is definitely a beach worth visiting when you’re on a short trip.
Pattaya trip will never be complete without the famous walking street. Walking street is not just your typical street. It is full of different kinds of street foods, seafoods, few clothing stores and different kinds of night clubs. I personally enjoyed walking here for I am a total food lover and this streets offers nothing but the best kind of foods not only from Thailand but from foreign countries as well. A crazy busy street indeed but definitely worth visiting for.
TBH, we are supposed to go home on the 29th, but Rose and I doesn’t want to go back yet, thus we decided to stay for one more day. We went back to Koh Larn but visited another beach which is the Nual beach, no particular reason in choosing the said beach. Nual beach seems more private and only few restaurants are open. Beach beds are a bit expensive comparing in Tien beach, still a nice beach to chill as well.
Pattaya Island offers a short escape from the reality and I will definitely go back on my next long weekend. You will never really know the beauty of a place unless you’ll take sometime to visit, and to live at the moment. No matter how many good feedback you hear, read or see, nothing compares to the experience of being there and seeing it for real…..
Laew Ja Maa Mai Ka Pattaya ❤
How Pattaya Island Captured my Heart Vacation? Oh come on! I don't think I am the only person who loves vacation may it be long term or short term break.

Thailand, the Land of Smiles 🙂
Thailand is a country that has so much to offer, whether you are a backpacker, a honeymoon couple or a family traveling with kids. After traveling Thailand for 3 months with our 5 and 6 year old, these are our top best places to visit. (Watch video instead)
1) Khao Sok National Park
Khao Sok National Park
The beauty of this park speaks for itself. The fact that very little tourists have discovered this park, makes you feel that your are lost in paradise. It is only you and nature within the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world.
Khao Sok National Park is located in Southern Thailand. The combination of gigantic limestone mountains, clear blue freshwater lakes, deep valleys, waterfalls, caves, and a diversity of plants and wildlife, makes this place spectacular. The perfect complete nature package, all in one.
You can spend several days exploring this 738-sq-km national park. Enjoy a boat ride on Thailand’s most magnificent freshwater lake, the stunningly beautiful Cheow Larn Lake. The limestone cliffs shooting up into the air and small little islands will lead you to feel lost in a maze.
Want to spend a night on the lake? Book your stay in one of only a few floating raft houses. Even though these raft houses are very basic, I’m sure it will be an unforgettable experience.
TIP:
Buy your boat ticket directly from the National Park. If you don’t have any wheels, you will have to rely on a tour operator in town.
There is a variety of accommodation available in town according to everyone’s taste and pockets.
Spend 2-3 days.
Watch our Khao Sok National Park video for more
CHECK IT OUT – Khao Sok Riverside Cottages
2) Krabi
KRABI 4 Island Tour
Spend some time in Krabi on the west coast of Southern Thailand. Stay in Ao Nang where you will find streets filled with souvenir shops, restaurants and bars.
Our most recommended tour is the 4 island tour which will take you to the islands visible on the horizon from the beach. The four islands are Koh Poda with the very famous rock formation, Koh Gai (Chicken Island) resembling a chicken, Koh Tub and Koh Mor which is connected via a sandbank during low tide.
To make the best out of your tour, book a private long-tail boat and explore the beautiful islands at your own pace. The majestic karst formations are just out of this world not to even mention the astonishing clear blue turquoise waters – perfect for snorkeling.
The final stop is at the beautiful Phra Nang Cave Beach on the Railay peninsula. The fact that this beach is inaccessible by road makes it even more exquisite.
TIP:
Negotiate prices from the tour operators in town and shop around. For the best experience, book a private long-tail boat.
Recommended Budget Accommodation : Krabi Heritage Hotel
Spend at least 3 days.
Watch our Krabi video for more
CHECK IT OUT – Krabi Heritage Hotel
3) Phi Phi Island
Phi Phi Lee Island – Maya Bay
When visiting Phuket, make sure to spend some time on Phi Phi Island. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful places we’ve visited.
Take a long-tail boat to the very famous Maya Bay, situated on Phi Phi Lee island. This bay was made famous by the movie, The Beach, featuring Leonardo di Caprio, which was filmed there in 2000. It is a very unique small island sheltered by high cliffs where you will get to snorkel at the most breathtaking places.
Explore Phi Phi Island – Stroll around the walkways in Phi Phi town where you will find many shops selling souvenirs and clothing. The island has no roads or transport, so take some comfy footwear to walk around.
Koh Phi Phi has quite a vibrant nightlife, with lots of bars and restaurants to suit every ones taste.
Looking for a party? Visit the northern beach at night and enjoy exquisite fire dance performances with booming music!
TIP:
Phi Phi Island is much cheaper than Phuket.
It is cheaper to book your trip to Maya bay through a travel agent on the island than in Phuket.
Find out if Maya bay is open to tourists as time has been set out for recovery of the bay.
Recommended Budget Accommodation : Phi Phi Good View Resort
Spend at least 3 days.
Watch our Phi Phi Island video or Koh Phi Phi Lee (Maya Bay) video for more

CHECK IT OUT – Phi Phi Natural Resort
4) Hong Islands
Hong Island Lagoon
Visit the 4 superb islands which form part of the Koh Hong group. As you travel by long-tail boat you will be surrounded by surreal rocky outcrops that poke out of the surrounding turquoise Andaman Sea.
Embrace yourself by the beauty that unfolds as you approach the very narrow 10m wide entrance to the Hong Island Lagoon. What makes this experience even more spectacular is the gigantic towering limestone walls that surround you as you enter this lagoon.
The next stop brings you to Lading Island also known as Paradise Island. It was once the place where locals collected the valuable vital ingredient for bird’s nest soup. Relax under the shades of the tree or encounter the tropical waters.
Enjoy the very small beach on Pakbia Island surrounded by a maze of caves eroded into the cliffs by the sea. This is also the perfect spot to just relax under the trees and marvel at the beautiful view.
Koh Nok Island is the perfect spot for lazing on the virgin sands before heading back to shore.
TIP:
Check the tides as the lagoon is not accessible during low tide.
Watch our Hong Island video for more
5) Koh Yao Noi
Koh Yao Noi Island
In need to remove yourself from the crowds of Phuket? Then Koh Yao Noi is the island for you! Whilst unspoilt islands are very hard to find around Thailand, Koh Yao Noi is definitely the most untouched island we have come across.
Koh Yao Noi is significantly smaller than its sister island Koh Yao Yai making it so much easier to explore the island within one day. Rent a scooter or a bicycle and explore the island’s rubber tree plantations, rice paddy fields and mangroves. Take the less traveled route to discover the most beautiful untouched beaches which you will have all to yourself.
If you are looking for parties, then Koh Yao Noi is not the island for you.
It is as if the pace of living on this island is slowed down. Prepare yourself for lying in a hammock with a good book or enjoy a freshly brewed coffee whilst taking in the beauty of the dotted islands in the background.
TIP:
Book your ferry ticket at the pier in Krabi or Phuket. Check out the timetables.
Recommended budget accommodation : Sabai Corner Bungalows
Spend more than 3 days

6) Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat Phrachomklao Rachanusorn Temple
Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat
Thailand’s best kept secret!! This beautiful temple complex is hidden in the mountains of Lampang Province. It is very easy to miss the small pagoda’s which are dotted over the mountain tops.
This is for adventurous travelers ONLY who is prepared to go off the beaten track. Rent a scooter or a car to get there. Entrance tickets can be purchased on arrival.
Travel further up the mountain in one of the 4×4 taxi’s. It’s quite an adventurous ride, with steep uphills and turns, so hold on tight.
Once you reach the top you will walk about 300m and then take some stairs to climb the remaining 500 meters up. You can’t help but to wonder how all the pieces of the pagoda’s were carried up years ago. This was all done by a local monk and 50 helpers.
It is an easy walk up in the shades of the trees. You will be rewarded with the most breathtaking views from the viewpoints. The fact that we were the only tourists here made this place so much more special.
TIP:
Book your accommodation in advance as hotels and B&B’s are hard to find in this area.
Arrive during daytime. The road signs are in Thai making it quite a challenge if you should get lost.
Wear comfy shoes for the walk up the mountain.
Recommended Budget Accommodation : Him Doy Muang Pan Resort
Spend 1 full day (spend a night and visit the temple early in the morning)
Watch our Wat Chaloem video for more
CHECK IT OUT – Him Doy Muang Pan Resort
7) Pai
Rice fields in Pai
Close to the Myanmar border and about 3 hours drive northwest from Chiang Mai you will find this small little town at the foot of the mountains. Welcome to Pai, Thailand!
For amazing views, visit the Pai Canyon –Note! This is NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED! Also NOT suitable for kids! Go early in the morning or share the sunset with other romantics.
Pay Thom’s Elephant Camp a visit where you can spend some time with the gentle giants. Treat these happy elephants with some bananas, bring your own fruit or pay a donation.
From 5pm you can head to the Pai walking street where you will find lots of vendors selling the tastiest foods and some the most extreme foods. If worms and chicken feet are not your thing, you can try out a variety of other dishes.
TIP:
The road to Pai is quite a stretch with a lot of hairpin turns – best to travel during daylight.

Chiang Mia is the largest city in Northern Thailand and attracts many tourists with its charm.
Put these on your Chiang Mai travel list:
Old Town
Surrounded by ancient city walls with a canal that lines the walls. Roam freely through the streets and visit some of the most astonishing temples. Please note the dress code before visiting the temples.

Nong Buak Hard Public Park
Do some exercise amongst the very well manicured lawns and water features. Not your thing? Then just relax and enjoy a picnic under the shade trees next to the water whilst feeding the birds.

Street Food
Excellent value for money! Our most favourite was the signature dish of Chiang Mai – Khao Soi. This dish consists of egg noodles in a coconut milk curry soup with tender fall-off-the-bone chicken. It’s topped with crispy deep-fried noodles, cilantro and served with lime wedges, pickled mustard, sliced shallots and chili paste.

Night Markets
Do some shoulder bumping at the Saturday night market? Unfortunately, this market’s popularity made it a very uncomfortable experience. Rather visit the Sunday night market with less visitors. Lots of souvenirs, foods and clothes at dirt cheap prices can be bought here.
Doi Suthep Temple
Situated on a mountain 15km outside of Chiang Mai, you will find this shiny golden temple with the most amazing views. Be prepared for the 309 steps up and be sure to be properly dressed.

Hmong Village
This village, set on a hill is home to the Hmong tribe. Browse through the stalls selling traditional crafts and be sure to try the strawberries. It is the sweetest you will ever find!

Chiang Mai Grand Canyon
Have some fun at the Grand canyon waterpark. This is actually the Hang Dong Quarry that has been turned into a very fun tourist attraction. Do some cliff jumping or just relax floating around on the bamboo rafts.

Pha Chor Canyon
Put on some comfy shoes and take a stroll through the shaded trails to this amazing canyon where you will find the 30m high pillars. The Pha Chor Canyon was created after the Ping river changed its course many years ago.

TIP:
Book accommodation in Old Town, it is less busy and you are close to food markets and temples.

9) Ayutthaya
Ayutthaya
The Ayutthaya Kingdom existed in 1351 to 1767. During this time it was the trading capital of Asia boasting with palaces, ceremonies and huge floats of merchant boats from all over the world. It was attacked by the Burmese army who burned the city to the ground and forced the inhabitants to abandon the city.
Today, situated only 80km north of the vibrant city of Bangkok, lies the ruins of a once flourishing city. No words are needed when moving between the fallen walls…
Ayutthaya is an ancient city with lots of historic stories waiting to be discovered. It is such an overwhelming experience roaming between these ruins. There is an indescribable silence which you will only understand once you have visited these sites yourselves.
TIP:
Rent a scooter or bicycle to visit all the sites. You can also rely on the the services of a tuk-tuk driver, but you will need to negotiate a good price.
Recommended Budget Accommodation : The Avail
Spend at least 3 days to visit all the sites.

10) Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai 9-Tier Temple
Chiang Rai is a town in northern Thailand close to the Laos and Myanmar border.
Put these on your Chiang Rai travel list:
1. Clock Tower
A golden clock by day with the most unique architecture, located in the centre of a round about. It is at night that you get a whole new appreciation for this clock tower. At 7pm, 8pm and 9pm you are entertained by a music and light performance. Switching between all the colours of the rainbow while playing the sweetest tunes.
Clock Tower
2. WAT RONG KHUN WHITE TEMPLE
This must be the eeriest temple we have visited to date. White – meaning purity, softness and goodness – is such a contradictory name given to this pointy, scary temple with evil monstrous creatures displayed all over. It does have a deeper meaning however.
The White Temple
3. BOON RAWD FARM / SINGHA FARM
The Boon Rawd Farm was once the producer of barley for Singha Beer, but unfortunately no brewery here. You won’t be able to miss the gigantic Singha lion as you approach the farm. Spend some good quality time taking a tour through the tea plantations and orchards. Venture through the park with a bicycle, tram or just take a stroll along the numerous walking trails.
The Big Singha
4. WAT HUAY PLAKANG 9 TIER TEMPLE
What Huay Plakang is situated 6km outside of Chiang Rai. This is where you will find the most gigantic Buddha statue situated on a small hill. Inside the statue is an elevator that goes up to the forehead. Here you can have a view to the outside through openings of the eyes. Right next to the Big Buddha is the just as astonishing 9 Tier Temple. This 9-storey pagoda can be climbed to the top for views of the surroundings.

TIP:
You will have to travel between these attractions, it is best to have your own wheels.
Recommended Budget Accommodation : Chiang Rai Hotel
Spend 2 days

Learning the Thai Ways — Rebecca Gasper
Living in Thailand seems completely surreal — I still can’t believe I’m here. Every day has brought an adventure, a new skill, a new Thai word, a new challenge, and a new friend. I’m excited to speak my limited Thai to restaurant and shop workers, even if it is only hello or thank you. I also love that Thailand, the Land of Smiles, is really living up to its name. It is fun to walk down the street and have people smiling at you or if you smile at them, they smile back so genuinely.
I have been here three weeks and have been learning a lot, sometimes in the most unexpected ways — like cab rides. While exploring Salaya and Bangkok, I’ve learned to always ask (before even getting into a cab) if the driver will take you to your destination and if they will use the meter. Using the meter is extremely important or else they will try to rip you off. I have also learned that it is possible to fit five people in the back of a cab that is meant for three people! I have also, thanks to cab rides, perfected the saying of where my house is located, Putthamonton sai si, as well as left, right, and stop. Never traveling by cab before arriving here, I have become a (somewhat) natural with it.
How many people can fit in the back of the taxi?
I already know that shopping will ruin me for when I have to return home. I’m able to buy adorable, quality pants for 100 baht ($2.80) and a whole meal for about 60 baht ($1.68). It really is a shopper’s paradise (and my friends know how much I LOVE to shop!) with enormous markets, cheap prices, and a variety of options.
So far, I have been to the Friday Market at Mahidol University, the market by Central Salaya, and JJ Market. JJ Market features 8,000 different stores and is divided up into 27 different sections. There was so much to look at — and in the end, I bought several cute things. My number one purchase has been pants (which seems beyond crazy since it is incredibly hot and all I do is sweat), but with my mosquito bitten legs, it has become a necessity.
Classes Begin
Classes started on January 9 with the usual first day of school jitters. The school offers a van service that picks students up from the house where we are in staying and takes us to school. I really appreciate the ride; unfortunately, on the days when I have an 8 a.m. class, this means having to be ready by 7:15 a.m. My classes are interesting, and the amount of new people I am meeting is incredible. I met students from Germany, Australia, Kansas, and even Wisconsin.
My classes are Thai Society and Culture, Drug Use and Behavior, Literature into Film, and Economics. I was surprised that I do not have a single Thai teacher. Instead, I have three American teachers and one from India. It is nice that I can clearly understand them, but in classes where I’m the only exchange student, I get called on often (which I’m not fond of).
School at Mahidol University International College is a big change from Marquette University. Here the classes have about 25 students each. Classes here are two hours long — I kind of miss my 50-minute classes (however, I’m not missing Organic Chemistry in the slightest). The school buildings are wide open, allowing for the nice tropical breeze to blow through. Campus is so large (about the size of four Marquette campuses) that there are golf carts to take you around. And best of all there is a uniform to wear, which makes it easy to get ready each day.
Female students at Mahidol University International College are required to wear black skirts and white tops.
Exploring Thailand
I set up my schedule for my classes so that I don’t have class on Fridays. This means more time to explore! I have been trying many new Thai foods, navigating bus and train routes, travelling to new parts of Thailand, talking with everyone (from cab drivers to street vendors to my fellow Thai students), and making new friends from all over the world. I love making friends with students who are native to Thailand because they know the best restaurants, best beaches, and best places to shop. They are also extremely helpful in teaching me new Thai vocabulary. At markets, I will ask how much something is in Thai and the owner will respond in Thai. The look on my face must be hilarious to them — they always laugh and then answer in English. Hopefully, I will learn my numbers better so I won’t look as confused. When in doubt, the best thing to do is just smile and say hello (Swadeka)!
My friends and I have visited Bangkok several times, enjoying restaurants, pedicures, massages, and shopping as well as viewing temples and famous sights. A group of 13 of us students went on a beach weekend together to Koh Larn. We left Friday evening and took a van for about three hours to Pattaya. We spent the night in a hotel where we had reserved three rooms, but when we got there, they only had two available. This meant having six people in one room and seven in the other. It was quite an adventure, especially since there were only four pillows in the room and no extras in the entire hotel (thank goodness my beach towel is very soft). For what we were paying ($8 total for both nights), the hotel was comfortable and we could look past sharing beds — and dealing with a lizard that would NOT leave the room!
In the morning, we took a ferry ride to Koh Larn. I was shocked to see hundreds of boats on the water in front of the beach. We ended up taking a bus to a different part of the island. We were greeted by sparkly blue water, the quiet lap of the waves, soft white sand, and not a lot of people. We swam in the water that was so clear you could see the bottom, even after you could no longer touch.
A weekend beach trip is always a good idea!
This past weekend, my friends and I took a 10-hour overnight bus ride to Chiang Rai, located in northern Thailand. We explored a cute used book store, then incredible temples, and a wonderful café that made pancakes. We were all really excited about the pancakes! In the afternoon, we went to Wat Huay Plakang, a beautiful nine-story temple. We climbed to the top for a beautiful view of Chiang Rai, the mountains, and a gigantic white Buddha statue.
In the afternoon, we proceeded to the Wat Rong Khun, better known as the White Temple, a contemporary, unconventional, privately owned, art exhibit in the style of a Buddhist temple. Then we visited the Black House museum, which featured 40 houses, each decorated in a unique way with animal skins, bones, rocks, and different pieces of art.
Thailand has many gorgeous temples. This is Wat Rong Khun (or White Temple) in Chiang Rai.
I already know that leaving Thailand in April will be a challenge. I like spending less than $2 on a really great meal, $8 for a whole weekend in a decent hotel, or a mere $6 on a new outfit. (How many pairs of elephant pants can I buy during my time here?! The answer is going to be A LOT!) There is so much to do, see, and eat (many of our outings focus on food) in Thailand and around Southeast Asia that I will certainly stay busy on all the weekends to come.
The love for Pad Thai is real!

Pattaya slowly starts to 're-open'
Pattaya's Koh Larn has reopened with a limited ferry service starting over the weekend. An estimated 150 people 'qualified' for the ferry and were permitted to travel across to what is now being described as an island resort. 90 per cent of those were locals. Passengers had to present identification, pass health screenings and either scan the Thai Chana contract-tracing app QR code or use the Mor Chana app, which indicates if they have been exposed to someone who had Covid-19. Anybody whom the app determined had been exposed to the virus were barred from the ferry. Many were denied permits although 154 'lucky ones' made the journey throughout the day. Pattaya-Koh Larn boats leave at 7am, midday, 3:30pm and 6pm, while return journeys from the island to the mainland at leave at 7am, 9:30am, midday and 5pm. Showers at the golf club now permitted Meanwhile, on the outskirts of town, Pattaya golfers will find the changing rooms and showers re-opening at clubhouses and other sports facilities. Clearly taking a shower after playing golf had been deemed life-threatening by some sort of expert but now the District Chief Amnart Charoensri has decided that golfers should be permitted to use locker rooms and take showers. Thai media have not reported if the Chief is a golfer himself or if he had been personally affected by this closure. Although some have noted the announcement was a 'little specific.' Why, Read the full article
