Tafel LXXXV (Structure and development of Marchantia polymorpha L.)
Leopold Kny
c.1890
Color lithograph
33” x 27”
Acc #2020.x19.76
Long forgotten in a desk drawer, these botanical prints deserve some time in the spotlight! Coming from a set of 120 color lithographs, these beautiful and educational prints are from a series titled Botanische Wandtafeln authored by Leopold Kny (a professor of plant physiology at the Agricultural College in Berlin). These prints describe plant anatomy as well as cellular functions and systems, and were found in classrooms throughout Europe. Now, prints from Botanische Wandtafeln are still valued for their beauty as the depth of scientific detail. Large posters in classrooms became more common and important during the late 19th and early 20th century as class sizes in schools began to increase. Unlike more contemporary scientific posters, those from Botanische Wandtafeln do not include a figure caption on the poster but are instead explained in great depth in the accompanying textbooks (also in the Knox collection). The first print shows the structure of the sunflower plant (Helianthus annuus) in vibrant colors and sharp detail and the second shows various structures and stages of the development of Common liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha).
It’s interesting to think about the many students who would have had these posters on their classroom walls for years; did they study them? Did they marvel at the beauty? Or were they ignored as mere decoration on the walls? How now does the original intent of the posters change now that they are being viewed as art objects? How should we approach and understand objects that are both aesthetic and instructional? Posters represent a fascinating and unique intersection between art and information, and it’s well worth considering the function and impact of the posters, both in the 19th century and those that hang in the classrooms around us today.

This skeleton is simply awesome. Scale, complexity, and novelty.  Here, two members of the articulation team contemplate the jaws.

Video
from the first poi video I ever filmed, almost 2 years ago. it’s still slick but things have changed wowie. at this point I had just got my first pair of fire poi, my partner and I were still dancing around each other, and I had no idea how calm and happy I would feel in life two years later. one of the reasons I love poi is the progression, and looking back helps me realize how far I’ve come both as a flow artist and as a person. growing up sucks sometimes but overall it’s just fuckin sweet. (thanks to @forgetful-ness for filming, teaching, loving, growing, and just travelling along with me for the last two years. I love you more everyday.)

Knox College was founded in 1844 by the Free Presbyterian Church. Architectural style: Gothic Revival. ❤ Beautiful corridor. Exhibit Highlight: Notable Nineteenth Century Knox Students
What you're witnessing here is the exhibit, “Notable Nineteenth Century Knox Students,” which includes notable alumni of Knox who have done amazing things. This exhibit is located on the second floor of the library in the Alumni Reading Room. Knox is reaching 200 years old and what's amazing about learning about these alumni is that it connects people now to those who lived more than a century before. Barnabas Root was the person I had the privilege of researching. Root was the first African American man to graduate from Knox. During the last three years of his life, he revised a Mende dictionary, built a school house in modern day Sierra Leon, and began a translation of the Bible into Mende (a native language).
