The unique climate of the Swartland (hot and breezy by day, cool at night) and it’s ancient geology of shale, arenite sandstone & granite soils make it ideal for varietals such as Shiraz (and Chenin, amongst others) to flourish. Syrah (another name for Shiraz) is considered to be one of the great noble black grape varieties, because it can produce such deliciously dark, full-bodied and age-worthy wines. Explore our various interpretations of the cultivar in our red range. #knowyourwine #leeuwenkuil #leeuwenkuilfamilyvineyards #swartland #swartlandwines #winesofsouthafrica #harvest2023 #mytrosismytrots2023 #shiraz #syrah #wine #winefarm https://www.instagram.com/p/Co6t-YaKUtg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

ALBILLO - Blanca
Tumblr media
It is relatively neutral, with an interesting glycerol index that gives softness to the wines in which it participates. It is present especially in Madrid and Ávila and also in Galicia. It is a variety authorized in the DO Ribeiro and main in the DO Vinos de Madrid. The grape has mostly neutral flavors with a light perfume aroma and is blended in red wines too.

We have started harvesting Block S, a 47 year old Chenin Blanc block and the oldest vineyards on the farm. The Swartland has become well known for the high quality of Chenin it produces. Chenin Blanc is a white wine grape variety that is known for its versatility and ability to produce a wide range of wine styles. It originated in the Loire Valley of France. Chenin Blanc wines can range from dry to sweet, and can exhibit a range of flavors such as honey, floral, and fruit notes, with high acidity and a refreshing finish. It is also commonly used in the production of sparkling wines. #knowyourwine #leeuwenkuil #leeuwenkuilfamilyvineyards #swartland #swartlandwines #cheninblanc #wine #winesofsouthafrica #winefarm #mytrosismytrots2023 https://www.instagram.com/p/CootjUuK36Q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Nowadays, mechanical crushers perform the time-honored tradition of stomping or trodding the grapes into what is commonly referred to as ‘must’. For thousands of years, it was men and women who performed the harvest dance in barrels and presses that began grape juice's magical transformation from concentrated sunlight and water held together in clusters of fruit to the most mystical of all beverages - wine. #knowyourwine 📷 @annegrayphotography #leeuwenkuil #leeuwenkuilfamilyvineyards #harvest #harvest2023 #swartland #swartlandwines #wine #mytrosismytrots2023 https://www.instagram.com/p/CoEkIcUq6aU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

We always begin our harvesting period with picking the grapes for the base wines used in the production of our bubbly’s (Chardonnay is these pics), when sugar levels in the grapes are low. The higher acidity levels of the resulting wine gives it the structure to age & the body to remain refreshing after the secondary fermentation responsible for the bubbles. #knowyourwine 📷 @ludolfoosthuizen #leeuwenkuil #leeuwenkuilfamilyvineyards #harvest2023 #swartland #swartlandwines #wine #winefarm #winesofsouthafrica #mytrosismytrots2023 https://www.instagram.com/p/CnypZfSKBzm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

D.O.Ca. Rioja (Wine Region)
Tumblr media
Rioja wine is made from grapes grown in the autonomous communities of La Rioja and Navarre, and the Basque province of Álava. Rioja wines are normally a blend of various grape varieties, and can be either red (tinto), white (blanco) or rosé (rosado). La Rioja has a total of 57,000 hectares cultivated, yielding 250 million litres of wine annually, of which 85% is red. The harvest time for most Rioja vineyards is September–October with the northern Rioja Alta having the latest harvest in late October. The soil here is clay based with a high concentration of chalk and iron. There is also significant concentration of limestone, sandstone and alluvial silt.
Geography and climate
Located south of the Cantabrian Mountains along the Ebro river, La Rioja benefits from a continental climate. The mountains help to isolate the region which has a moderating effect on the climate. They also protect the vineyards from the fierce winds that are typical of northern Spain. The region is also home to the Oja river (Rio Oja), believed to have given the region its name. #KnowYourWine, #Rioja, #WineRegion, #D.O.Ca. Rioja Read the full article
