it   surprises   him,   eyes widening ever so slightly before turning to face emery.   confusion   evident on facial features,   he leans back against his table in the forge.   he isn't sure when she'd found him,   muchless how   long   she'd been standing there.   the heat of the forge makes it feel   suffocating,   especially when faced with what emery is proclaiming.   ❛   what  are  you   talking   about   ?   ❜   is that how she felt   ?   is   that   how   he's   made   her   feel   ?   sure   …   maybe he's been   reliant   on her   …   during the moments where he was beyond stressed out,   seeking a friend     ⸻    something   more.   a connection with her.   but now,   he isn't sure what to feel.   emotions muddled,   not sure whether or not he should feel offended on whether or not she was   dictating   his own feelings for him.

gloves are taken off and put aside on the table,   breathing in deeply before letting out a heavy sigh.   brows pinch as he looks down,   looking away from her,   not wanting to feel   guilty.   ❛   it  was   never   supposed  to  be  like  this    …    i  never  wanted  to  use  you  or  anyone,   frankly.   ❜   a lump forms in his throat,   causing him to swallow nervously,   hands gripping at the edge of the table tight.  knuckles   white   from the pressure.   how could he even explain himself   ?   would she listen to him if he   tried   to explain it   ?   shaking his head a little from side to side,   eyes wander,   slowly trying to look at emery once more.   ❛   there  was   something   between  me  and  mel  but   …   i  called  it  off.   it  didn't  feel  fair  to  you     ⸻     i  didn't  want  to  make  it  feel  like  i  was   using   you,   because  i'm   not.   ❜   he cared too deeply for her to ever think of doing such a thing,   even if he might not be able to express it properly.

it’s   not   something   she   expects,   to suddenly receive   valentine’s   day   candy from anyone     ⸻     much less emery.   it’s a   sweet   gesture,   making lips pull comfortably into a smile,   going from looking down at the candy she received and looking at emery.   ❛   i  feel  bad,   i  don’t  have   anything   to  give  in  return.   thank  you,   though.   ❜   while she wasn’t much for sweets,   at least in the form of candy,    it didn’t mean she   wouldn’t   eat it,   especially when given as a surprise gift   (   did   she   forget   it   was   valentine’s   day   ?   no,   more   like   she   was   ignoring   it.   )   pocketing the candy,   she moves closer,   hooking her arm with emery’s,   looking to her side and chuckling.   ❛   we  should  spend  valentine’s   together     ⸻     unless  you  have  plans  with  someone  else.   ❜

chuckling   behind   her   hand,   she shouldn’t find it   amusing   but if emery is saying she had it under control,   she   wonders   what   else   she   is   fibbing   about.   eyes shift to look at her as her hand falls,   shaking her head slightly from side to side in   disbelief.   ❛   you  don’t  need  to   lie,   it  looked  like  you  were   overwhelmed.   it’s  the   least   i  could  do.   ❜   mel was used to all sorts of things by now,   the   hecticness   of events and planning things,   though she was   lucky   that elora helped her with everything.   moving a hand to rest it against emery’s upper back,   she gives her a   soft,   reassuring smile.   thankfully this event wouldn’t be too large and extravagant but she understood the   stresses   nonetheless.   ❛   how  about  you  take  a  break,   yes   ?   relax  a  little.   ❜

Caitlyn let out a dry laugh, rolling her eyes at Emery’s comment in fake annoyance. ❝ Wow, thanks. That’s exactly what my ego needed,❞ she shot back teasingly. She pushed herself off the ground with a wince, wiping her face with the crook of her elbow. The motion left a streak of blood smeared across her jacket, thick and dark from the gash running across her nose and cheeks — a brutal souvenir from the battle to defend Piltover and Zaun from Noxian forces.

Her shoulders slumped as she let out a tired sigh, reaching into her pocket for a syringe of shimmer. Fingers fumbled slightly as she found it, and a click of her tongue betrayed her frustration. Blood continued to trickle into her mouth, and she turned her head, spitting it out before swiping at her face again.

❝ Are you okay? What happened to you? Did… did everyone else make it?❞ The questions tumbled out quickly, her voice filled with a mix of worry and urgency. She didn’t wait for answers, though. The cap of the syringe popped off with a practiced flick, and she shrugged out of her jacket, her movements stiff and deliberate as she exposed her arm.

Caitlyn paused briefly, glancing at Emery with a tired but reassuring expression. ❝ I'll be fine, in case you were interested. Just need to patch myself up and keep moving,❞ she muttered, more to herself than anyone else, before pressing the needle to her skin.

a   sudden   burst   of   laughter   comes   from   him   as she tells him to   never   speak   of   it   again.   the   it   in question being something so incredibly   stupid   but embarrassing     ⸻     while in a rush of running down the hall to get to the lab,   he might have   accidentally   …   ran her over.   well,   not over but ran   directly   into her,   causing him to topple over her,   caging   her against the floor and his own body.   he'd been courteous to   immediately   move of course,   getting up off of her and offering her a hand to   help   her up.   which has led them to this conversation.   smiling sheepishly at emery,   he figures that it would be better not to speak of it again,   however he couldn't help but feel bad and   simultaneously   amused   by her reaction.   ❛   i  told  you  it  was  an   accident   !   i  didn't   purposely   run  into  you,   i  didn't  see  you  at  first  and  well   …   i  was  in  a   hurry.   ❜   which,   whatever he'd been in such a hurry about was now of no concern to him   (   viktor   would   have   to   work   a   couple   of   more   minutes   without   him.   )   ❛   let  me   make   up   for  it,   it's  the   least   i  can  do.   ❜

❝        and how exactly do i do that?       ❞ she asks, brows furrowed slightly in mock confusion as she drops onto the floor in front of the couch with the bottle of bourbon in her hand. ❝        i never do anything,❞ she defends as she focuses opening the bottle. once it's opened she t i l t s her head back against the couch to look up to hope with raised brows as she adds, ticking off each item on the list with a finger, ❝        i mean, other than kick your ass, show you up, win bets ... i guess I could go on.       ❞

her lips tilt into an a m u s e d smile and she lifts her head off the couch just enough to take a drink from the bottle before lifting it up in offering to hope. admittedly, emery was already pretty tipsy after their evening in their favorite sports bar. how she'd managed to keep enough concentration to win the game of darts was beyond her, but it meant that she won the bet which is all that mattered to her.

Hope lets out an undignified snort that hangs in the air between them. "You never do anything, right," she drawls, plucking the bottle from Emery's fingers to take her own sip. There's a dull buzz within her system from the alcohol, mixed with the pleasant muscle ache that comes from a vigorous workout. The darts lay forgotten on a nearby table and Hope focuses her stare on @knowthings. It's deceptively easy in a smoky bar to admit that maybe they've progressed past whatever unnamed thing that's been brewing between them.

Even losing doesn't seem to sting as much as it normally does, her normally competitive ego unbothered by this turn of events. "Well, winner takes it all or so I hear," Hope chuckles softly. "What did we even put on the table this time around?"

That's easier said than done . Cassandra had sent Jayce in an attempt to soften the blow , as if hearing she'd been shafted from her position without any choice in the matter would just be accepted . Emery visits in good will , another guest wishing her well after the attack , but Jayce' s act as messenger still stings .

' Did you know ? ' She cannot help but ask — it seems the type of thing that mother would want to tell everyone but her own daughter .
