Well if that's not a jab to his ego, he doesn't know what is. He has to remind himself that this is normal, that most Americans don't know who he is, that it's going to continue to be normal as he continues to interact with Americans. They don't know who Roy fucking Kent is, and he's a literal legend, so why would they know Jamie, who's... well, also a fucking legend, but less old. If Jamie were less bruised by the comment, he might've taken it and flirted in return - I can be whoever you want me to be tonight. Unfortunately, Jamie's ego rules him, and when it's bruised, it's hard for him to come back from that smoothly. He doesn't want to be outright rude, it's not her fault she grew up somewhere without culture [ because that's what football is to him, a culture. It's his first love, and it'll surely be his last ]. ❝        and how exactly do i do that?       ❞ she asks, brows furrowed slightly in mock confusion as she drops onto the floor in front of the couch with the bottle of bourbon in her hand. ❝        i never do anything,❞ she defends as she focuses opening the bottle. once it's opened she t i l t s her head back against the couch to look up to hope with raised brows as she adds, ticking off each item on the list with a finger, ❝        i mean, other than kick your ass, show you up, win bets ... i guess I could go on.       ❞

her lips tilt into an a m u s e d smile and she lifts her head off the couch just enough to take a drink from the bottle before lifting it up in offering to hope. admittedly, emery was already pretty tipsy after their evening in their favorite sports bar. how she'd managed to keep enough concentration to win the game of darts was beyond her, but it meant that she won the bet which is all that mattered to her.

Hope lets out an undignified snort that hangs in the air between them. "You never do anything, right," she drawls, plucking the bottle from Emery's fingers to take her own sip. There's a dull buzz within her system from the alcohol, mixed with the pleasant muscle ache that comes from a vigorous workout. The darts lay forgotten on a nearby table and Hope focuses her stare on @knowthings. It's deceptively easy in a smoky bar to admit that maybe they've progressed past whatever unnamed thing that's been brewing between them.

Even losing doesn't seem to sting as much as it normally does, her normally competitive ego unbothered by this turn of events. "Well, winner takes it all or so I hear," Hope chuckles softly. "What did we even put on the table this time around?"

At first, Jeremy isn't certain that she's addressing him, considering he was just coming around to ask if she wanted another drink with her lunch but there's no one sitting at the table with her. "Heh, Mystic Falls is... pretty boring," he shrugs, looking around at the diner that acts as the central hub of the town most nights. Nearly everyone in the building is a familiar face, ones that he's known since he was a child, all except for her, and he's curious how she even found her way to Mystic Falls in the first place. "What kind of fun are you looking for?" Jeremy's shift ends soon and it's been a while since he's done something reckless like introduce a complete stranger to his hometown. "Normally, we just end up being delinquent assholes in the woods with a keg and a few joints."

the wet street glows under the streetlight above them. a soft halo on an otherwise dreary night. bella stares at it as she contemplates what emery just said. what she sees is only a memory, sharp headlights ahead of her as she's tucked into the passenger seat of a car going far too fast. sure she might die the second the tires lose traction on the rain soaked road. and yet feeling s a f e r than she ever has.

shaking off the memory, bella turns to her friend with a soft smile. ❝ i think it's the scent for me ❞ , she responds quietly, ❝ it smells like coming home after you've been away too long. as nice as it is though, we she probably find cover soon, looks like it's about to start up again. do you wanna go for another bar or head back to mine for a movie marathon complete with all of the finest junk food the gas station has to offer ? ❞

He tenses his shoulder in anticipation of getting smacked once Emery fully catches up with what is going on, but she doesn't to his surprise, if only to make things seem less suspicious. His eyes are scanning the road for any alternate routes, but it's all flat land for as far as the eye can see. Making any turns would be spotted instantly, hardly helpful for trying to lose a tail. "Yep," he replies through gritted teeth. "Maybe showed up in our rearview five minutes after we hit the road. I was honestly hoping for a bit more of a head start," he admits.

The mission itself was risky to begin with, and if Marcos thought he could have pulled it off on his own, he would have tried. But John's made him promise not to pull his "lone ranger schtick" though he plans to bring this up as a counter example the next time his friend brings it up. "There's a city coming up in a little bit. We'll try to lose them in the traffic. Unless you've got a better idea?"

dark eyes n a r r o w slightly at the blatant ignoring until she notes the glance in the mirror. she shifts slightly to check the side mirror to check out the road behind them as well, observing the SUV trailing them. immediately, her gaze f l a s h e s back to him and she barely stops herself from punching his arm in response. only the understanding the seriousness of the situation keeps her in control of her impulses, knowing that if what she's ASSUMING he is worried about is happening ... w e l l , maintaining an oblivious image is key to them getting out of this.

so instead of punching him she relaxes in her seat, tapping her sunglasses atop her head so they call to the bridge of her nose. ❝        how long have they been on us? since we left?       ❞ she questions, tilting her gaze to the window as if watching the landscape z i p by, while her eyes settle firmly on the mirror as she attempts to discern anything a l a r m i n g or otherwise suspicious in the passenger seat of the car behind them. as far as she could tell they just seemed attentive. she wished that was more comforting.

Ireland report pt. 1: Knowth and Newgrange, or, losing my mind over stone age art

On to the next archaeological site of the day, the impressive passage grave complex of Knowth (like 'Now-th', not 'Noh-th'). As mentioned in my diary, it consists of one huge central mound surrounded by lots of smaller ones. The entrances to the passages into the main mound are still clearly visible, aligned roughly on an east-west axis, but they're apparently not stable enough to let tourists into so any access is strictly for research purposes.

The photos above don't really give you a clear idea of the layout of the site, so here's a satellite pic (i.e. a Google Earth screenshot) as well.

Spring Equinox in the Ancient Irish Calendar

Equinox is the date (or moment) some astronomical alignments in Ireland mark as being auspicious. Not many, mind you, but some, like the cairn on Loughcrew or the two passages of Knowth, a sort of super-alignment with quadruple significance. Though the actual alignment of Knowth is disputed, it might be a lunar alignment or not an alignment at all. The equinox is far less obvious an astronomical…

Cnogba / Knowth • 1

Some pics from my tour to Cnogba/Knowth. Don't even know what to say aside from it blew me away. It's huuuge and the kerbstones are so captivating it was so hard to peel myself away to get the bus back. Art over 5,000 years old and *I* got to see it. Jsjshskdkdhsj

The satellite mounds and their passages and the entrance stones and their standing stone alignments were also incredible

Crying on both the inside and the outside that the eastern entrance is obscured by the metal stairs like, people walk right by, don't even notice it, it's not part of the tours but hello?? The eastern passage and it's timber circle outside? The remains of ritual deposits outside and the grave goods inside?? The MACEHEAD??

OPW if u see this ilu but plz unbury the eastern passage it deserves just a little more dignity >.>

The western passage's entrance is the last two pics, it's nice and cleared, and you can see the entrance stone's designs and the aligned standing stone very well
