#elsanatları…
i bought a skein of merino wool yarn for an in-progress project but it turned out not to match the existing yarn SO now I have fancy schmancy dark red yarn! but what do i use it for????????????????
Do you have a favorite thing of yours that you've crocheted? They're so cool, it's something I wish I could do but looks way too complicated to get head around so guess I will have to stick to cross stitching 😂
Thanks!! Oh good question! I've crocheted a lot of stuff lol. I focus mainly on making amigurumi and I think so far my favorite items to make have been the Herstory series designed by chiacrafts. They are soo cute and so fun to make. Just the right amount of easy and complex that keeps my brain stimulated.
I'm also really proud of my Wednesday Addams vest! It's the first piece of clothing I've ever made and took me months to complete. I love it.
Crocheting is so much fun! I love it. I'm starting to learn how to knit as well but that's been more of a struggle for me. Crochet really clicked in my brain easily. My sister does cross stitch! That looks fun too! If you want to learn how to crochet, and I totally recommend it, there's tons of tutorials on youtube. That's how I taught myself. And there's a ton you make with just knowing a stitch or two. All you need is a hook and some yarn! All the herstory dolls I made above are all made with a few simple techniques (single crochet, chains, increases, and decreases mostly). This youtube video got me started if you wanted to give it a try!
youtube
And this was the first thing I made (after several practice squares):
have you knitted socks before? if so do you have any tips? was thinking of making a pair as my next project after I'm finished knitting the vest i'm working on!
please i’m so glad you asked… i love knitting socks so much i think it’s the most fun type of knit project. there’s a lot of different steps but they don’t take long to finish so it’s very dynamic!! and it doesn’t get boring halfway (unless maybe if you’re knitting thigh highs?). anyway, i LOVE the crazysocklady on youtube! she has complete tutorials on how to knit socks using different methods and needles and it’s so well explained. i could give you tips but honestly just do whatever she says on her videos and you’ll be fine hehe
hi!! i love your knitting so much and as a fellow knitter i was wondering if you did intarsia or duplicate stitch to get the pictures on your knit pieces‚ and if so‚ where did you learn intarsia? it's something i've wanted to get into for a while but it's intimidating!
hii!!!
for these socks and this vest, i used duplicate stitch. for this sweater and these pieces, i used intarsia/fair isle.
before i learned knitting intarsia, i learned crochet intarsia. idk if you do crochet but i feel like colorwork with crochet is a bit easier and for me it made knitting intarsia less scary. the first intarsia knitting i did was for the harry styles cardigan, using this tutorial. which i wouldn't necessarily recommend u learn from unless you're doing that project.
anyway i'd say just look up tutorials! this looks like a nice in-depth one. maybe make a little swatch along with a tutorial and then hopefully you'll have a bit of a grasp on the technique and be able to follow other some patterns. I promise it’s not that scary!!
fair isle is worth knowing too, and you can use it pretty interchangeably/in tandem with intarsia depending on what design you're doing - basically you just bring your same yarn in a strand across the back of a different color design, whereas with intarsia you use a new ball of yarn after a color change.
i wish you luck and so much happy knitting! let me know if u need more help! <3
Might have to get those goofy prism glasses to stave off neck pain while crocheting. I crocheted for like 6 hours or something one day last weekend and then my neck was in pain for days. I've slowed down a bit since, but I am getting close to finishing the basketweave vest I switched to and omggggg it actually is coming together so nicely! Because I had to design the pattern myself rather than using a video tutorial or written pattern, it's taken like,,,, two and a half weeks or so of trial and error (sooooo much frogging (I'm certain I've frogged every component at least once (but I don't really mind doing so because every time I've made improvements despite the setback))), but I'm super close! Finishing up the bottom band then just need to weave in the ends! Test fits are looking good!!!
Had another DnD game last week and AGH it's so much fun, I'm having so much fun!!!
I also did a guided tour of one of my uni's special rare book collections and it was so lovely! I simply adore a guided tour where someone can just espouse their knowledge for a time and I just soak it up like a sponge. The collection itself was quite beautiful, too.
This weekend I did a bit of a back-to-school Depop spree which I judge as being fairly successful, though the true test will come when I get the items (I think I also want to start a back-to-school depop cleanse where I start selling again, but we'll see). I'm excited about all of the items but especially a true irish cable knit wool sweater! In building up my cohesive closet, I'm also trying to figure out items that could be my equivalent of a sweatshirt and sweatpants for lazier, bloated, or simply more relaxed days and occasions. Things that are just easy to throw on without actually being sweats.
Today I'm thankful that even though my father and I disagree on a fair number of things, that doesn't ever seem to detract from the love we have for each other. He pushes me to make sure I have all my facts in a row, but oftentimes our opinions on how to approach those facts are different. It's just that I feel really lucky not to be one of those unfortunate cases of children who can't have civil conversations with their parents on political topics despite our disagreements. We're very mindful, very demure, one might say ;)
Just like that other post said about the best knitting tutorials on YouTube being filmed by old ladies with crappy cameras and terrible lighting, I just found the answers to all my questions about a seam I have to do in my sweater vest in a video that's 44 seconds long, has no narration or upbeat background music, and the only background sound is a child crying somewhere in the house

Omg thank u sm for the detailed post! I wasn’t expecting u to go that in depth so I appreciate you taking the time to explain so eloquently! After doing some more research I think I should start with crocheting to have some kind of base foundation work with yarn and then get into knitting. Do you have any pattern recommendations for crocheting? Again thank u for your input on all of this!
i wasn’t expecting myself to go that in depth either, but apparently when it comes to knitting i just can’t stop myself, but i hope it was useful at least a little bit.
sounds like a good idea to start with crochet though!! i started with crochet and didn’t pick up knitting for years, but since learning i tend to crochet for things that aren’t clothes, so for first patterns i’d say pillows or if you’re a bit braver, blankets would be your best bet. bags are also a good option but tend to need a lining if you want to use them a lot. and you also have to consider whether you want to crochet in squares or just back and forth in one piece, bc both test your patience in a different way. making granny squares feels great bc you keep getting a win whenever you finish one, but then putting it all together can feel so long even though it’s rewarding, whereas making in one piece feels like it takes longer but when it’s done, it’s done, you don’t have any tedious assembly.
crochet is also a lot more freeform than knitting, at least for me. like you can take squares and out them together to make a whole host of things, so I’d say a great starting point would be a classic granny square, and you can make it up in so many ways to make a pillowcase or blanket or a top or a jumper and so much more. pintrest is a great place to find patterns just in general, but just search up granny square and you’ll find a whole host of things. for beginners, either the classic granny square or a sunburst granny square would be best, and from there you can join them to make whatever you want. I’ll include some links in the read more that might be helpful, and have fun crocheting!!
The printer was out of ink. So I couldn't go the nice easy route of printing off a pretty, free pattern. Nor was I going to let that deter me. To the YT I went hoping someone had been kind enough to post a video with a tutorial I could understand. A couple false starts before the perfect one manifested before my eyes. The tutorial even had a link to a previous video on how to draft the pattern myself. Big Score!
Admittedly I skimmed both videos, probably could have paid closer attention. I drew out the pattern. Cut my pieces. Lined up on my sewing machine. And started to pray.
"Trust the process" I repeated mantra style. I willed all my hope into those three words. Focusing it into every stitch. I stumbled near the end not sure how to make the final pieces fit together. Almost like a small voice in the corner of my mind had spoken, inspiration struck and I bent back over my machine. Seamed. Hemmed. Lockstitch. I sat up in triumph.
Which is when I noticed the woman? Deity? Entity? Standing to one side peering over at the project. There was something definitely otherworldly about her. "That turned out very well." There was something almost smug about her smile. "I'm so glad you called to me!" Her face lit up and when I say this I mean there was an actual glow. Not a blinding flash by any means but she was definitely giving off some light.
Now I don't consider myself totally without knowledge on things such as myths, fantasy, scifi, and fairy tales. I was not, however, immediately certain which I was dealing with. If any story had ever taught me anything though, the best option is to always offer hospitality. "Can I" I squeaked. That was awkward. I tried again, "Can I offer you a cup of tea?"
Waiting for the water to boil, she told me she was "a minor goddess, no big deal, I've been a proper Goddess a few times and this is much more fun. Less muss and fuss." Hearing that made it hard to look at her even as I scrutinized her outfit from the corner of my eye.
I asked her how I had called to her while I subtly inspected the embroidery on her shirt and tried to decide if her vest was crochet or knit. Her literally beaming smile almost hurt to look at so I focused on pouring two steaming mugs. "It's very rare for a weaving witch to call on me and you were so fervent that I simply couldn't resist popping in. Oh, here, I brought you a token." She rummaged in quilted skirt pockets as I set the mugs down on the table and gestured with an upturned palm to the tea selection.
Her hand covered my palm for a moment before she selected a tea. I was holding an iron on patch. It read...
Do you have tutorials for men's clothing? Something that doesn't flatter body shape?
Also do you have any tips on how to make vests from existing vests?
Or any simple masculine clothing for beginners to make? (I have a sewing machine but suck at trying to figure out what I can do as a beginner)
Masculine sewing patterns
As mentioned before, I'm not very experienced with masculine styles. That said, it has always struck me as weird how few tutorials or patterns you'll find for them. Sewing and fashion are not gendered activities. Everyone wears clothes, after all!
