honestly yeah, fiber arts is magic. you cast spell of warm gloves, spell of nice hat, spell of stuffed animal.

material component: yarn

wand: single hooked wand or double pointed wands, depending on caster's preference

mechanical component: specific motions repeated in a particular pattern

time component: a while

look seriously the first step in a knitting recipe is "cast on", and then it's a bunch of letters and numbers incomprehensible to anyone not versed in the arcane art. that's a spellbook. yes it's a book of knitting patterns but also. it's a spell book.

I love people who craft and I love learning about other people's crafts because every single one is full of little things that non-practitioners wouldn't notice but others in the craft RAVE about.

Like, I'm a knitter, and before I started I couldn't tell a knit fabric from a crocheted one, and I mostly would appreciate pretty color choices and overall patterns. But now I drool over perfectly uniform stockinette or a good stretchy bind off, and don't even start me on neat floats on the back of fair isle!

Quilters will talk about the binding and stitch choice on a finished quilt, ceramics artists will gush over how a glaze turned out, embroiderers will sigh at perfectly smooth satin stitch, and a woodworker can spot a good join from a mile away.

There is so much more beauty and artistry in the world than we can see on our own.

Quilter's Dilemma

A phenomenon I made up where you have a talent that takes so much time to produce something, that you can't sell it anymore. There's a market for handmade quilts, obviously, they're beautiful and warm and wonderful, but no one would be willing to pay the amount of money that is required to properly compensate the artist.

I don't quilt, but the raw materials to make a couple of pairs of mittens is $70 for some nice wool. But the hours required to make them is roughly two seasons of Criminal Minds, and some Doctor Who episodes with my family. Those are 45 minute episodes. Minimum wage in my state is around $11.

No one is willing to pay several hundred dollars for a couple of pairs of mittens, no matter how warm and detailed they are. Especially if I'm not a master knitter, which I'm not, and they're bound to have mistakes in them.

So we loop back around to giving them as gifts, and instead ask nothing in return.

If someone gives you something they handmade this Christmas, cherish it.

So we all know about Solas taking Lavellan straight to thigh ride town when he first kisses her back (yeah, yeah his time knife, we've all seen it)

But did we also know that Lavellan fully has him by the collar, leg lifted, and is pulling him down herself? She probably would have gotten even further if he hadn't pulled back so quickly...

It's even funnier when you can see his hands that they didn't animate, so he looks fully taken by surprise and like he doesn't know what to do with himself.

This post is just an ode to Aran knitting and creating with his own hands next to Tattoo and the way they both make but how Aran is learning what that truly means for the first time while Tattoo is struggling with the dichotomy of creating for both pleasure and for money and the direct conflict he feels in that as well as Aran rediscovering creativity beside him and the pleasure in making something with his own hands.

(Poverty forces you to turn pleasure into money at every chance while wealth can allow you to simply steal ideas rather than come up with them yourself and so Tattoo knows the pain of losing his creativity to a need for money while Aran is only just realizing what he never truly had because of his own need for more.)

And that's why it's so powerful when Aran tells Tattoo how creative he is and how talented he is. Because they are both creators in the end and they understand that about each other.

Chunky crochet sweater following the (free!) youtube tutorial by crochemily. this one is super warm and cozy and i'm definately going to make more sweaters in this style for my friends!

Rory Gilmore sweater following the (also free!) youtube tutorial by ikoxun. fun fact: after completing this sweater and blocking it, i had to take all the panels apart and shorten them because the yarn i used stretched out SO much with blocking that all the sudden it was 10 inches too long

Tarot card sweater by starcrossedknits! I'm sooo glad I chose the yarn that i did for this because it is so dreamy soft and I'm in love with the final result (minus the ends I have yet to weave in)

on a slightly more serious note, 2024 was kind of a sucky year for me and my family, and i don't think i could have made it through nearly as okay as i did without this silly, lovely little hobby i randomly decided to pick up in march. i've never met a hobby that made me as uncomplicatedly happy as knitting and crochet do :')
