A Prissy Girl’s Guide to Fall

back by popular demand, i’m here with another prissy girl guide! this post is a bit late for the fall but it’ll allow you to finish the season off in a pretty fashion, and transition to the winter smoothly. i’ll be discussing the look i’ve been adorned in as of late and my fav products i’ll be using for the spirit of fall! 💓

what’s the look this fall?

the look this season is “divalicious barbie.” voluminous hair, tapered square nails and fur details + neutral color palettes. add in a few pops of pink and some sparkly detailz and you got my look this fall. “sexy chic.” i’ve been really leaning into the vibe of a runway supermodel diva emulsion. as you may have seen, my birthday outfit drew from many inspirations, focally the early nineties alaia runway shows. just immense glamour, class and girliness with a healthy dose of sexy.

first and foremost…

the weather is turning so a lot of us are catching colds. take care of your health and rest. protect your immune system and dress according to weather. i almost always get sick around late september/early october and its because of the dip my immune system takes due to the change in climate.

preparation

some of you are in school like me. one of the reasons the fall is my fav season is because it’s time to get back to the basics. you should be developing new study routines around this time or perfecting the ones you have already

new school supplies + stationery. pretty girls deserve to stay stocked up on glitter ink and fuzzy pens

start saving money for the holiday season

get a handle on your halloween look early so not to scramble when the day comes

stock up on tea, immune boosters like emergen-c and medicine

start going outside in the morning to get the vitamin D and K you may lose out on as the seasons turn

set new goals and track them in a diary or planner

try to get well rested. the change from fall to winter can cause a lot of mood and energy complications due to lack of rest

It is #Molloy Monday and I am here to remind you that Daniel is featured most from 1975-1985 aka the Sluttiest Era of Modern Male Fashion.

Coming in HOT we have the cut off short shorts and cropped t-shirt or mostly unbuttoned button down combo. Daniel visited some warm climates during the chase years so I invite you to picture him in the tiniest ripped jean shorts sweating over whether or not that auburn haired lady down the street is actually Armand!!

Or going into the 80s sometimes the tops were REALLY cropped and exposed midrift and back!! Like just picture Daniel fucking around on Night Island in this, wow wow!!

But even when the pants were long the t-shirts were TIGHT, maximum pec definition through the shirt was a must.

If he didn't wanna show that much skin? That was fine because turtlenecks where IN baby!! These are basically vampire lingerie imo, covering up the most succulent part of the neck but still leaving a hint exposed below the jaw?? Armand had to have been dying of thirst!!!

(Also when it says Armand came to pick Daniel up from jail in a lawyer's tweed suit? He wasn't wearing no modern cut, he'd have been rocking the big lapels because this was the 70s tyvm)

Also important to note was that the 70s were the era of glam rock and androgyny, so picking a silky button down that looks like a women's blouse? Totally okay for men, very in style so long as you leave the top buttons undone to expose maximum chest.

Btw velour? Was IN. This is the 1979 equivalent of a juicy couture tracksuit which Armand could have snuggled right into while they were living in London.

And while the 80s sees the rise of a looser fit, that doesn't mean the crop top died or that people weren't still rocking a more form fitted jean when they were feeling casual.

This photo is from NYC in 1983 and shows that tight t-shirts and short shorts were still very much alive, just styled a bit differently! A tight top and looser straight leg jeans, or short bottom and a flowy open top took the place of all fitted looks.

Or that the mostly unbuttoned button down went away- if anything in the 80s the buttons went even LOWER and more revealing. Paired with a boxy linen suit this is essential 80s Miami aka Night Island looks.

This sweater is loose but it's got the deep V neck and a sheer knit, perfect for the beach!!

And yeah this is Sapder AGAIN but note the half open shirt, leather jacket, and jeans that get tighter near the ankle!! Classic 80s, baggy but still sexy, A+.

I SWEAR this is the last time I'm gonna use and abuse him but peep the muscle tank with the DIY cut edges on the arm holes! V neck! 80s!!!

Basically the takeaway here is that if you're putting them in the 80s and having them rock something baggy and double denim, the look still featured a tight waistline and rolled sleeves or rolled ankles to tighten the jeans. It wasn't just baggy all over!!

Kitty’s Guide to Fall/Winter 2023

You’ve all LOVED my season guides so it’s only fair that I continue the tradition and make a fall/winter guide for 2023! In this guide I’ll be going over important topics that will outline what the kitty energy is going to be for the cold + cozy season. About Urban Streetwear and Tech-Inspired Looks We Love

Hi, I’m Allison and for this week’s blog post we will be covering women’s urban streetwear essentials and interchangeable outfit pieces. But first things first- What IS Urban Streetwear?! Streetwear -or urbanwear- is defined as a casual clothing style worn especially by members of various urban youth subcultures (Oxford Languages). Urban fashion is inspired by urban environment and city living.

Urban streetwear reflects individual personalities that are ever-changing and unique, gathering elements of different subcultures like hip hop, skateboarding, sports, and casual wear. With the growing popularity of streetwear trends, we figured we would weigh in with our own observations on what makes for a well-balanced and choice urban streetwear outfit.

This week I will be going over some of my favorite tech-inspired urban streetwear. Let’s get into it.

Cargo Skirts and Tech Pants

This look has been on the radar for a while now, giving more variety for choices in loose-fitting bottoms for many urban streetwear looks. Cargo skirts can be styled with sporty and casual clothing like t-shirts and sneakers or a variety of styled tops that can give a nice silhouette. This trendy item resurfaced after miss Bella Hadid styled it back in 2021, and it is barely hitting the markets in stores such as Urban Outfitter and Amazon.

Here’s another cargo skirt/parachute maxi skirt option from ASOS for my petite ladies as well.

Tech Pants

Tech pants are technical pants that are made with a mixture of fabrics and made to provide moisture-wicking properties and easy of movement as well as all around comfort. They have a baggy/loose-fitting fit and look like cargo pants. Here’s one from Urban Outfitters.

Here’s another cool tech pant made by Free People- are they tech pants or are they work scrubs? Are they for the lab or b-ball attire? We don’t care, we love them.

Okay, that’s nice, but where’s the variety?

When it comes to urban streetwear, the best thing you can do is vary the looks by playing with different shapes and silhouettes. You don’t always necessarily need to wear baggy bottoms, you can use straight leg pants or even a variety of shorts or skirts, even chino pants. Here’s a few other looks for inspiration.

Here we have an OOFTD streetstyle look from Milan Fashion Week of 2019. Although it’s not recent, it’s still relevant and noteworthy! Look at the contrast between the semi-casual sweater mixed with the jogger cargo pants and boots.

Another option is to mix it up with knits and contrasting outerwear to really complement an outfit. Here’s a noteworthy look from Copenhagen Fashion week in 2023. Notice how the knit set still has utility wear details such as the buttons on the hem of the sweater and the drawstring waistline of the knit skirt and on the sweater arm cuffs. This is a great example of urban streetwear with tech inspired elements.

Another amazing ensemble from the 2023 Copenhagen Fashion Week streetstyle looks is this fashionable denim on denim look with some unique jeans and a Carhartt messenger bag. Not quite a Britney and Justin moment- it’s got a fresh modern flare with the white denim vest and blue denim patchwork.

Honorary Mention of Microsoft’s ACTUAL Tech Pants!

Microsoft came out with their own tech cargo pants and they have lots of extra pockets and a zip off legs option. They are also 100% cotton ripstop and very cool!

She always thought getting Yato home would be the hard part. And it was certainly hard enough; he and Yukine had been through enough traumas to last them the next thousand years of their lifetimes. She’d also pushed her body past its limits as well, but she tried not to think about that. After all, it was all worth it to see their smiles, petty arguments, and their other usual antics around Kofuku’s house again.

Despite that, she found herself spending less and less time with them. She used excuses such as exams and plans with her other friends, but those were all distractions she also told herself to ignore the truth.

The reality was that she no longer knew how to act around Yato.

Her thoughts constantly went back to the snow bank where Kazuma cursed her with the fact that her feelings would never be enough. He had since apologized, but the words still stung. Regardless of her own pain, she figured it would be easy enough to hide her feelings around the god. Their friendship was most important to her, of course, so any romantic feelings could be pushed to the wayside.

Talking was easy enough. She didn’t really have to do anything but be herself when it came to having conversations with Yato and Yukine, it was like breathing. It was everything else that would be her downfall; the way her eyes fell to his lips when he spoke, the urge to grab his hand when they walked together, wanting to lean against his shoulder as they sat together on the back porch of Kofuku’s house.

The worst part was it wasn’t even just thoughts; she was beginning to actively have to stop herself from acting out on all of these urges that passed through her mind.

‘Even Yukine-kun being there isn’t much of a deterrent anymore…’ She sighed bitterly to herself, dragging her feet as she made her way home.

“Hiyooooriii.” Yato appeared in a flash of light, giving his usual grin.

Her mouth parted in surprise and she felt her face warming up rapidly, so she kept walking, “What brings you here?”

“I was wondering why you haven’t come over in a while. Doesn’t seem like you have plans today.” He pointed out nonchalantly as he walked alongside her.

She shrugged and forced out, “I’m just tired and it’s kind of a long way home, you know.”

“You’re not having any more episodes where you’re passing out, are you?” He tilted his head in worry.

She shook her head, “Other than leaving my body purposely, no.”

He squinted, “When do you do that? Other than coming to see us.”

“Every once in a while, just to sort of practice and, I don’t know… stretch my spiritual muscles?” She gave another shrug, “I want to make sure I don’t lose the ability.”

Yato gave a bit of a snort, “This is coming from the same girl who begged me to turn her back to normal after we first met.”

“Well, the situation’s changed quite a bit.” She answered simply, running a hand through her hair and pushing some of it behind her ear.

“Yeah, I would say so.” He agreed before taking a small pause. When he spoke again, his voice was a bit weaker, “Hey, is everything okay?”

Hiyori finally looked at him and blinked, “Yeah, why…?”

“You seem a bit… I dunno, distant.” He put his hands in the pockets of his tracksuit, “Aside from not visiting as often, even when we talk… something’s just off. Like you’re holding back.”

She felt her stomach lurch inside her body as she bit her lip. ‘Am I really that bad at this?’

“Did something happen that you don’t want to tell me about?” He asked with a small frown and looked off to the side, “Look, I know I’m the worst when it comes to keeping secrets from everybody, so it’s only fair if you don’t want to tell me. But just know that I’m here.”

“It’s not like that.” She shook her head fervently and found herself fending off the desperate urge to embrace him after that wounded look of his, “Yato, everyone has secrets. And most of yours were to protect others, like Yukine-kun. So stop beating yourself up over it, please.”

He gave a look of surprise before flashing a smirk, “Thank you, truly. But I also see that you’re trying to change the subject.”

She gave a huff and crossed her arms, “It’s just… something stupid. And personal.” Her eyes deflected away from him.

“Ahh. Boy troubles, perhaps?”

She snapped her head back in his direction, now scarlet.

He raised an eyebrow in interest and clicked his tongue, commenting, “Looks like I nailed it.”

“Yeah, sure. Whatever.” She muttered in return. It wasn’t like she could deny it at this point; the only thing she could do is make sure that the topic stayed away from Yato himself.

He put his hand up to his chin, thinking out loud, “Huh, I never really pegged you as the sheepish type when it came to this sort of thing.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Hiyori fired back, annoyed.

“Uh, just because you’re usually so confident. I guess this guy must be pretty special, then.” She noticed his tone drop in the slightest before he looked back to her with a wide smile, “So what do you need help with?”

She stared back for a moment before answering, “I’m not sure that I want any help.” She swallowed and continued to sprinkle the truth within her reply, “I don’t know even know if I’m going to act on my feelings.”

His eyebrows knit together as he frowned deeply, “Why wouldn’t you?”

“I don’t think there’s any chance of anything coming from it.” The pit in her stomach was only growing bigger and she was trying her hardest to ignore the stinging at her eyes as she edged closer and closer to the truth.

“But how could you ever know that for sure if you don’t even try?” The frustration in his voice rang out loudly, “This really isn’t like you, Hiyori. To give up without even fighting.” He moved closer to her and took one of her hands, holding it tightly between both of his, “Besides, any guy that would say no to you is crazy. I couldn’t dream up someone more perfect if I tried.”

The tears were definitely stinging now. “I’m not perfect.” She gave a small laugh.

“To me you are.” He locked eyes with her and she was gone, thoughts no longer coherent.

Her lips were on his before he had a chance to react. “It’s you. You’re the boy trouble.” She mumbled against him.

“Me?” His eyes flickered up to her and she nodded once more.

“I love you. I realized that shortly after you left and ever since you’ve been back, I just… I can’t be around you without wanting more. I’ve been trying so hard to just keep things the way they were, and I can’t. Kazuma-san was right…” She looked away from him and clenched her fists tight against her skirt.

She heard Yato sigh, “Sounds like he gave you some sort of speech about his own feelings for Bishamon.”

“Essentially.” Hiyori admitted with a nervous swallow.

“Firstly, the fact that psycho bitch is oblivious to how much Kazuma loves her and the fact that he doesn’t have the balls to tell her properly has nothing to do with you. That’s his own problem, so pretty much throw out anything Kazuma said.”

She peeked back at him, relief partially washing through her body but pins and needles still around her heart as she waited for his continuance.

“Secondly,” He reached out to brush a hand through her hair, the back of his hand barely skimming her cheek, “You’re not the only one who’s been trying to keep it together. I knew there was a decent chance I’d never see you again when I left, so…”

“Yeah, and I’m still mad about that.” She puffed out her cheeks and gave a glare.

He gave a small laugh before wrapping one arm around her waist and holding the other just behind her head, mumbling as he pulled her close, “I know, I’m sorry. And I love you too, Hiyori. More than you’ll ever know.”

His lips met hers a moment after, soft and gentle. She sighed, content as she melted against him.

Babies - Mortal Kombat Preference

Johnny Cage

Johnny didn’t really know how Cassie would react when she found out you were expecting a baby – his baby. He knew his daughter had always hoped that her parents would get back together, like they were when she was little, but seemed to slowly warm up to the prospect of her Dad re-marrying.

But as soon as she saw that little face, she – like everyone else who encountered the little one – were completely in love.

He may have cried a little – a lottle – when he held them for the first time, but will most likely deny that; “Nah, there was just - something in my eye.”

When it came to deciding baby names, he had his heart set on Johnny Jnr, for a boy. As for girl names, he was a lot more flexible.

Surprised you with a mini version of one of his ‘JC’ tracksuits. As nice as it was, there was no way that your kid would be wearing that…unless he dressed them (he put it on them one day when you were out, and you just didn’t have the heart to take it off.)

Spoils them immensely. As the daughter/son of a famous actor, companies jumped at the opportunity to send you free stuff – the living room was no longer habitable due to the sheer mass of freebies you’d accumulated.

Regardless of whether this is young!Johnny or older!Johnny, I can see him proudly carrying the little one in his arms, no matter who’s company he’s in, because hell yeah you guys made a cute baby!

But if anyone gets too close for his liking – whether that be the paparazzi, or someone more sinister – he’d quickly shield them away from prying eyes. He flat out refuses to divulge too much information to the press because the last thing he wants is for you to be bombarded.

Erron Black

Holy shit. Holy shit. It has literally just sunk in that he’s a Father, and he’s shook.

Can’t stop staring at their little, peaceful face. It’s clear who their parents are, even without having to take a second look – they have the perfect blend of your features mixed with his. They’re the most precious thing he’s ever seen.

Once they fall asleep in his arms, that’s him for the night. He’ll try not to move too much because he doesn’t want to want them up.

He’d make a solemn vow to be a good Dad. He didn’t have a good relationship with his parents and refuses to follow in their footsteps.

I think he’d be a lot more conscientious of the jobs he’d take; he must think not only of himself and you, but also of little Black-(Y/L/N). He would try not to stray too far from you both if anything should happen. If you don’t know how to defend yourself already, he’d insist that you learn – he’d probably teach you himself.

He’s not too fussed about names, providing it’s not a name he deems ‘stupid.’

He struggles to be soft – doesn’t do baby talk, since it makes him feel stupid, but he’ll have a much softer tone to his words. That paired with his accent makes your heart melt, and your baby clearly loves it too (who wouldn’t.)

The Black Dragon will never know of his child’s existence. Ever. He’ll be damned if they get dragged into that shitshow. Kano will never meet them, nor will any other member of the gang.

His guns are either kept on him, or out of reach, for obvious reasons. When they’re old enough he’ll teach them how to shoot, but until then – no touchy.

 Kabal

The world around him seems to screech to a halt , as soon as he sees that little face poking out from the blankets. It’s as if everything has come to a standstill, and there’s only you, the baby and himself in the world.

When they grab his finger in their tiny hand his heart just melts. When they coo at him, his eyes go all misty and soft and it’s adorable.

Insists that their name begin with a ‘K’ to mirror his own.

Like Erron, he’d make sure that Kano the Piss Goblin will never know that the baby exists. Whether that means he’ll have to leave the Black Dragon, potentially having to change his name as well as taking you and the baby as far away from them as possible – he’d do it in a heartbeat.

I think he’s a man who loves his Mom dearly, so of course he’d want her to see her Grandchild. She’s just as taken with them as he is and pulls you both into a congratulatory hug. She probably will knit them stuff such as baby socks, or little blankies with their name on it, which never cease to warm your heart.

He loves it when they fall asleep on his chest. There is nothing in this world that he loves more than having you tucked into his side with your little baby sprawled out across his chest, snoring away.

Even though they probably can’t grasp concepts other than food and who their parents are, he’ll watch movies with them, pointing out the good ones and the bad ones. He won’t even subject them to the Ninja Mime franchise, but just shows them the DVD cases like “These are the ones that Daddy hates, when you get older you’ll understand why…”

Pre-Burn or Post-Burn, he’d love them unconditionally. Post-Burn would be anxious that his mask and or appearance would scare them, but when they smile their gummy smile at him all that worry just dissolves.

 Hanzo Hasashi

This isn’t his first rodeo, so he’s very helpful during labour. There’s something sadly reminiscent of his previous experience which means he might need to talk a walk during, but he’s there for you.

Tries not to cry when he sees the baby – fails miserably.

Holds them to his chest, pressing soft kisses to their fuzzy head, whispering in his native tongue. You don’t really know what he’s saying but judging by the misty look in his eyes and how much love is pouring out of him, it was clearly something beautiful.

To him, this is the promise of a fresh start. He’ll not let history repeat itself and will protect both you and his child to the ends of the Earth.

Their baby clothes are mostly the typical colours – cream, mixed with shades of baby blue and or pink. However, Shirai Ryu colours will slowly mix in with this, but you don’t mind that much – the little yellow baby-grow is gorgeous.

The only people who know of the baby’s existence are yourself (obviously), Kuai, Takeda, Jacqui and Cassie – Johnny knows too but only because Cassie told him.

Tries to be the strict parent but he’s a softie at heart. Unless they do something outlandish, there is virtually no discipline in the house.

If their first word is ‘Dada’, he’ll be in awe. Grandmaster Grumpy Face has a heart but only for the select few.

He’s composed on the outside, screaming on the inside. It’s a good thing that Hanzo happened to be around when you went into labour, otherwise he would be essentially lost.

He sits outside the waiting room with Bi-Han and Hanzo, trying to not panic at the sounds of your pain – he got sent out by the nurse because he looked ready to pass out, the poor soul.

Rushes through the door as soon as he hears the baby cry.

Holds them in his arms – he can’t stop looking at them, they’re so perfect. Bi-Han claps him on the back, congratulating his brother, as well as you. Hanzo looks over you and Kuai with a look that’s reminiscent and vaguely emotional.

Doesn’t want everyone to know about the newest addition to your family. Hanzo and Bi-Han are the first to know since they were there, but other than that there are few who know.

Has no problem with doing the late-night/early-morning feeds. As Grandmaster, he’s up early every morning, so this doesn’t change his routine much; plus, it lets you sleep more so win-win.

His cool body-temperature is calming for the little one – Cryomancy genetics and all that jazz – so more often than not, they’ll crash out in his arms. These are the some of the moments he loves dearly, their little chubby face smushed against his shoulder, sleeping peacefully.

The embodiment of the ‘Don’t speak to me or my son again’ meme. Johnny has been warned on countless occasions that if he swears around the baby or tries to share his bad influence with them, he’ll get his ass kicked.

If the babies’ first word is either a curse word, or some variation of ‘Blueberry Ice’, Johnny’s getting frostbite.

  Bi-Han

Everything needs to be in shades of blue – he put his foot down on that detail. The baby would most likely be a Cryomancer, so it’s important that they rep the Lin Kuei colours.

He’d probably be hoping for a son – ‘cause tradition and all that jazz – to carry on his legacy, but if he had a daughter he would be wrapped around her little finger.

I could see him rocking one of those baby carriers whilst simultaneously teaching. No-one questions him, since he’s the Grandmaster – plus the baby is adorable, so there’s very little confliction.

Thinks up cute snow / ice / cold related nicknames for the little one, which probably will evolve into their code-name when they get older. He still calls Kuai ‘Tundra’ when they’re not in front of their students, so that playful nature is still there under that stern façade.

Doesn’t want to shove the fact that his kid is angelic in people’s faces but – look at his angel baby. Look at them! They are perfect! Those eyes! That little button nose! But don’t touch the baby. He will cut a bitch.

“Let’s go see Uncle Kuai”

Uncle Kuai has little to no experience with babies but he’s gotta learn! He’s only ever met young Lin Kuei members when they were just exiting the toddler stage, so seeing a baby this small makes him a bit more cautious.

The sight of you with the baby makes him feel at home. And he’ll probably want another…

  Kung Lao

For all his confidence during your pregnancy, this man is basically hopeless when you go into labour. Like, he tries to be as supportive as he can be, but he’s white as a sheet and looks as if he’ll faint at any given moment.

He’s very gentle when he holds them for the first time, as if he’s scared that he’ll break them. He remembers holding Jin when he was an infant, so the experience isn’t knew to him, but knowing that the baby in his arms is his – it blows his mind.

He manages not to cry until they open their little eyes, peering up at him in wonder. Then he almost sobs.

From day one, he’s the Over-protective Parent. Upon learning about his fate in the Coliseum, he’ll maintain a watchful eye over your baby, at all times. He’s taken them to class a couple of times, which granted him a few stares but otherwise was unmentioned – they were just grateful he went…

Keeps his hat out of there reach – his worst nightmare is that they cut their little hands on the blade.

He’ll probably want his name incorporated in their’s. If it’s a boy, he’ll want to name them after him to keep with tradition, but if it’s a girl he’ll be happy with it as a middle-name.

Isn’t the biggest fan of having other people hold them; the only people to have had the go ahead, other than those within the temple, are Raiden and Cassie. He’s constantly afraid that they’ll drop the baby, and so would rather hold them and let the person fawn over them that way.

skin prep is a priority again. winter is usually a dry time of year for people. instead of using oils and lotions, opt for heavier creams for moisture and hydration. some of my favs include cerave moisture cream, jergens shea butter body cream, and bath and body works body creams.

store all your hot weather clothes! but be sure to leave out the layerable pieces

car maintenance is extremely important. get your tires rotated, or new tires altogether. ensure your car’s brakes are properly maintained and your car’s heat is functioning properly.

invest in new body scrubs as this is usually driest time of year. the winter is the perfect time to work on your skin on the body because your skin has time to turnover and heal.

What is velvet fabric?

Crushed velvet. As the name suggests, crushed velvet has a “crushed” look that is achieved by twisting the fabric while wet or by pressing the pile in different directions. The appearance is patterned and shiny, and the material has a unique texture.

Once one of these yarn types is woven into velvet cloth, it can be dyed or treated depending on the intended application.

The main desirable attribute of velvet is its softness, so this textile is primarily used in applications in which fabric is placed close to the skin. At the same time, velvet also has a distinctive visual allure, so it’s commonly used in home decor in applications such as curtains and throw pillows. Unlike some other interior decor items, velvet feels as good as it looks, which makes this fabric a multi-sensory home design experience.

Due to its softness, velvet is sometimes used in bedding. In particular, this fabric is commonly used in the insulative blankets that are placed between sheets and duvets. Velvet is much more prevalent in womenswear than it is in clothing for men, and it is often used to accentuate womanly curves and create stunning eveningwear. Some stiff forms of velvet are used to make hats, and this material is popular in glove linings.

China leads the world as the most prolific producer of synthetic textiles. These and other reckless industrial practices have rapidly made this communist nation the world’s largest polluter as well, and China is lagging far behind the rest of the world’s gradual switch to sustainable fabrics and non-polluting production processes.

Since “velvet” refers to a fabric weave instead of a material, it can’t technically be said that velvet as a concept has any impact on the environment. The different materials used to make velvet, however, have varying degrees of environmental impact that should be carefully considered.

Environmental impact of silk

Silk is the closest thing we have to an ideal fabric from an environmental standpoint. This embossed velvet fabric is still, in most cases, produced the same way it has been produced for thousands of years, and since the production of silk is not aided by any pesticides, fertilizers, or other toxic substances, making this fabric does not have any significant negative environmental impact.

Environmental impact of rayon and other synthetic textiles

Rayon is the most commonly used substitute for silk in velvet and velvet-inspired fabrics, and the production of this synthetic substance is significantly harmful to the environment. The rayon production process involves multiple chemical washes, and the base material of this substance is petroleum.

Essentially, rayon is non-biodegradable fossil fuel product that introduces tons of harmful chemicals into the water supply as it is created. With these detractors in full view, the only reason that rayon is still produced is that it is inexpensive.

The term “velvety” means soft, and it takes its meaning from its namesake fabric: velvet. The soft, smooth fabric epitomizes luxury, with its smooth nap and shiny appearance. Velvet has been a fixture of fashion design and home decor for years, and its high-end feel and appearance make it an ideal textile for elevated design.

Velvet is a soft, luxurious fabric that is characterized by a dense pile of evenly cut fibers that have a smooth nap. Velvet has a beautiful drape and a unique soft and shiny appearance due to the characteristics of the short pile fibers.

Velvet fabric is popular for evening wear and dresses for special occasions, as the jaguar velvet fabric was initially made from silk. Cotton, linen, wool, mohair, and synthetic fibers can also be used to make velvet, making velvet less expensive and incorporated into daily-wear clothes. Velvet is also a fixture of home decor, where it’s used as upholstery fabric, curtains, pillows, and more.

The first velvets were made from silk and, as such, were incredibly expensive and only accessible by the royal and noble classes. The material was first introduced in Baghdad, around 750 A.D., but production eventually spread to the Mediterranean and the fabric was distributed throughout Europe.

New loom technology lowered the cost of production during the Renaissance. During this period, Florence, Italy became the dominant velvet production center.

Velvet is made on a special loom known as a double cloth, which produces two pieces of velvet simultaneously. Velvet is characterized by its even pile height, which is usually less than half a centimeter.

Velvet today is usually made from synthetic and natural fibers, but it was originally made from silk. Pure silk velvet is rare today, as it’s extremely expensive. Most velvet that is marketed as silk velvet combines both silk and rayon. Synthetic velvet can be made from polyester, nylon, viscose, or rayon.

There are several different Holland velvet fabric types, as the fabric can be woven from a variety of different materials using a variety of methods.

Crushed velvet. As the name suggests, crushed velvet has a “crushed” look that is achieved by twisting the fabric while wet or by pressing the pile in different directions. The appearance is patterned and shiny, and the material has a unique texture.

Panne velvet. Panne velvet is a type of crushed velvet for which heavy pressure is applied to the material to push the pile in one direction. The same pattern can appear in knit fabrics like velour, which is usually made from polyester and is not true velvet.

Embossed velvet. Embossed velvet is a printed fabric created via a heat stamp, which is used to apply pressure to velvet, pushing down the piles to create a pattern. Embossed velvet is popular in upholstery velvet materials, which are used in home decor and design.

Ciselé. This type of patterned velvet is created by cutting some looped threads and leaving others uncut.

Plain velvet. Plain velvet is usually a cotton velvet. It is heavy with very little stretch and doesn’t have the shine that velvet made from silk or synthetic fibers has.

Stretch velvet. Stretch velvet has spandex incorporated in the weave which makes the material more flexible and stretchy.

Pile-on-pile velvet. This type of velvet has piles of varying lengths that create a pattern. Velvet upholstery fabric usually contains this type of velvet.

Velvet, velveteen, and velour are all soft, drapey fabrics, but they differ in terms of weave and composition.

Velour is a knitted fabric made from cotton and polyester that resembles velvet. It has more stretch than velvet and is great for dance and sports clothes, particularly leotards and tracksuits.

Velveteen pile is much shorter pile than velvet pile, and instead of creating the pile from the vertical warp threads, velveteens pile comes from the horizontal weft threads. Velveteen is heavier and has less shine and drape than velvet, which is softer and smoother.
