I like being with you all night with closed eyes. What luck—here you are coming along the stars! I did a road trip all over my mind and heart and there you were kneeling by the roadside with your little toolkit fixing something.
Give me a world, you have taken the world I was.

Sambucky + poems ༺
Sam’s reading a report that Torres sent over. It’s nothing urgent, which is just as well since he’s in bed and should admit that he can’t work from here like he used to. Another old habit that didn’t survive Bucky moving in. It’s not entirely his partner’s fault. Bucky’s actually quiet right now, laying in bed beside him and staring with lovesick puppy eyes that make Sam’s insides feel gooey.
It was increasingly hard to resist Bucky’s indulgent cuddles. He didn’t hesitate to drop whatever he was doing, any time any place, to wrap Sam in his arms. And that felt really good. Sam loved to be tucked under Bucky’s chin, or to have Bucky’s head resting on his shoulder. Holding each other soothed all the hurt and broken pieces inside. Sam used to chase that feeling but now he didn’t have to. He could just lean into his partner and rest.
Sam sighs and drops the papers on the bed. Bucky reaches over him to turn the light off but he protests, insisting he’s just resting his eyes for a moment. They curl into each other and Bucky pulls the covers over their shoulders. He rubs Sam’s arm lovingly. Touching all that smooth warm skin gives him goosebumps.
God, Sam is beautiful. In the orange glow of their bedroom, Sam looks soft as peaches. Bucky hasn’t found a fruity endearment that Sam will tolerate yet (basket of blueberries, cutest kiwi, and most perfect plum were all shot down with a laugh) but he’s not giving up.
“Stop thinkin’ so hard, strawberry shortcake.”
“Who you callin’ short,” Sam grumbles without opening his eyes.
Bucky kisses the spot between Sam’s eyebrows and he smiles. He lazily searches for Bucky’s hand and tucks their entwined fingers under his cheek.
“Go to sleep.”
“Mm no… busy solving ‘mportant logistical—” Sam interrupts himself with a yawn.
“Well, cut it out,” Bucky teases. He gives Sam another kiss, light as powdered sugar. With his head on Sam’s pillow, their breaths mingle and smell like toothpaste. Bucky marvels at how his life has changed since loving Sam.
“You know,” he begins quietly, “I’ve been to a lot of places.”
“Really? Never woulda thought that ‘bout you.”
Bucky snorts and bumps their noses together. “Whenever I got somewhere new, I hoped for cloudless nights. I watched the movement of the constellations till I knew ‘em by heart. Till I could find the same stars in different places.” Sam hums with understanding. “I felt so lost. Even when I stayed put.”
Sam tries leaning back to look at Bucky’s face, only to be tugged close again.
“Made a habit of mapping the night sky. When I knew where I was under the stars, almost felt like I belonged.” Sam squeezes Bucky’s hand where it’s still tucked between the pillow and his cheek. “Doesn’t feel the same anymore. Hasn’t for awhile.”
“What’d you mean, baby?”
“Stars aren’t as bright.” Bucky’s thumb strokes Sam’s jaw. “Since I started seeing you all the time. Everything else s’just dull in comparison. You shine more than every star put together. Brighter than the sun.”
A smile breaks beautifully across Sam’s face. Bucky grins back like an idiot and Sam’s too far gone. He hugs Bucky tighter even as he shakes his head and chuckles.
“I never feel lost when I’m looking at you, Sam.”
Sam starts to say something like “shut up” but it’s lost in Bucky’s mouth. They kiss with so much tenderness it sends warmth to the tips of his toes.
“You are honest to god unbearable,” he mutters, sending Bucky into a fit of laughter. “Can’t believe you think all that sappy shit works on anyone.”
“Works on you.”
“Oh, is that—”
And then Bucky is kissing him silly.
