Do you think Kill la Kill could've benefited from being less horny and over the top, or would it just be more boring?
I mean, the excessive juvenile horniness of the show is definitely a valid reason to dislike it, and not to want to engage with it, but if you get rid of it you basically get rid of its reason to exist.
KLK is about sexuality, shame, body acceptance, coming of age, puberty, and how especially teenagers' bodies are structurally commodified and abused by systems of social control. You kinda can't cut the horny, fucked-up sexual weirdness out of that without fundamentally altering what the thing is.
There's a serious critical discussion to have about building a church with the devil's tools - whether or not the visual language of horny-ass ecchi anime can meaningfully be deployed to tell KLKs story without fatally undercutting it. KLK wants to comment on the commodification and hypersexualization of teenage girls' bodies, but it also very gleefully indulges in those tropes as spectacle, and positions appropriation of them as a form of empowerment, and while I think that on balance it ultimately does work as a story, and I find it compelling, that's also a valid place of criticism, and a valid reason to reject the story or find it distasteful or beyond the pale.

out of curiosity why dont u consider rgu to be a magical girl story? i feel the same way tbh (i also think this about klk) but i cant really articulate why, im just wondering about ur thoughts on the subject :>
because utena ultimately doesn't fit the bare minimum definition of what a magical girl actually is. she isnt a girl with magic.
the magic itself is debated to even exist but utena most certainly doesn't hold any of it. and utena is neither a magical idol, warrior (which is what most people think she falls under) nor a witch, which is what anthys role is, not utenas. also anthys role as a witch is meant to be symbolic of the whole girls get two roles in society: good chaste damsel or wicked witch thing that the story criticizes. utena as a story doesn't actually deconstruct magical girls as much as it criticizes fairy tale tropes specifically. the only magical girl tropes that are ever brought up are ones that overlap as pure coincidence because girls media as a whole often uses fairy tale tropes. utena has a transformation sequence but that doesn't mean anything since CCS doesn't have one and super sentai often does, and sentai ISNT considered part of the genre or even considered "magical boys" despite being far closer to the common idea of magical girls (fighting heroines) by virtue of being the main inspiration for a lot of them.
also i've seen people argue that because of anthy being a witch the story counts as a magical girl one but if that's the case then any story with a witch in it should be part of the genre which is obviously not the case.
honestly i think calling rgu magical girl is unhelpful both for fans of the series and fans of the genre. it doesn't make any sense to recommend utena to a fan of precure over something like lolirock or mermaid melody or even ultraman, and it doesn't make any sense to recommend sugar sugar rune and tokyo mew mew to someone who watches utena and wants to see more shows in the same genre.

just remembered when ppl were criticizing klk for its humorous cartoony animation being "cheap" and "lazy." the most wrong anyone ever was. there are SO many things you can EASILY criticize klk for but you missed the broad side of the barn going for "nui being animated to appear as a 2d object, consistent with her presentation as a character much more cartoony than the others--able to interact with the 4th wall, absurdly powerful--is a consequence of trigger running out of money for animation."

Okay, I might be overdramatique because I'm pure tears pal but I have some incomprehensible babble to spew and my tumblr will suffer collateral damage of it.
So hi hello. In the Internet sphear I go by Percy. And if you don't know me, my favourite anime of all times is Kill la Kill.
For some reason, I catch myself rewatching it every now and then. I thought I might be watching it extra critically this time but I got lost in the sauce by the 3rd ad and didn't feel like doing any deeper inspection.
(No joke if that's how americans watch anime no fucking wonder you need power of anime AND gods on your side. In 24 episodes I've watched more ads in minutes than actual episodes, that's fucking insane. Nothing is sacred anymore, I swear)
KlK also marks one of my last anime ever watched. It aired in 2013, I think, and I've seen the OVA (I don't remember a bit of it though) but then somehow in 2014, I've started Akumo no Riddle but got bored by like episode 4 and never picked it, or any other series, again. In me teens I just couldn't justify wasting time watching anime, when I could actively do other stuff I enjoy and that requires more than physical form (aka I do something-anything).
I clearly have a soft spot for it. For some folk it is weird; on one hand I have a... Complicated relationship with nudity. One can say I do not like it very much. But it never crossed my mind that in 24 episodes, 80% of it is spent half naked. I just kind of got the nudity is used for narrative purposes and paid it no mind. For some it's just fan service for all the weebos to beat their meat to the drawing or whatever.
Well, I love the graphical style and prowess of KlK. I think (is the key word here) that klk and attack on titan (the title I use for it does not tranlsate into English and you cannot appreciate the peak of my humour, sadly) are semi close on the time line. And I remembered a lot of people going head over heels for attack's style, but I always liked klk's more. Also music-wise klk blows the attack on nonsense outta the water. Like, they wish they had such a good track in the series. Don't even get me FUCKING started on Garnidelia! A QUEEN.
And I've been crying for 10 minutes over Senketsu's death. Like a bitch. I've seen this ending like 5 times by now and it never fucking fails. Your fave could never 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Also also, not a gospel or anything, so take it with grain of salt but I vaguely remember one day reading that Kill la Kill's title is actually a pun. What some people have noticed not a lot of killing takes place. Kiru ra kiru, as it could be pronounced, would be "to cut" and "to wear", which is quintessentially what the whole series is about. But then again, I'm not sure when, where or how I've read that and I'm also not well acquainted with Japanese (which is a polite way to say I can't read or speak it at all)(unless the meme-y japanglish counts; arigathanks gozaimuch and yamete kudastop and so on and so forth), so yeah. Take it and consider me an idiot making shit up, that's the safer way out lmfao.
Anyway, yeah, I'm a little vulnerable here, crying my eyes out to my pillow. Good night or something?

Every time I see a post alluding to Kill la Kill's horny ass fanbase I remember the show's subreddit and almost any given fanart you could google and, like, yeh, I can't argue.
But also as an asexual teenager with repressed anger issues I 100% watched it to live vicariously through a teenage girl punching other high-schoolers across the screen. I stopped minding the suggestive stuff as soon as it became oversaturated by purpose (as in, almost immediately).
And I ALSO distinctly remember having a whole subset of the fandom who was all about the plot and the dynamic and the analyzing (y'know the usual) and also ignored the horniness 90% of the time?
But then when I critically look at how the show looks from the outside and how a big subset of the fandom behaves I remember that my experiences are not universal?
It's a weird spot to be in. KlK was a huge part of my senior year (appropriately) and my fandom life, but any time I mention it I feel like I have to immediately follow it with a disclaimer of NOT IN THE WAY YOU THINK

*sweeps sugar apple fairy tale under a rug of embarrassing things in a fan of, with other such things like moral Orel, game of thrones (Jaime x brianne and Cersei x therapy plz lol), kill la kill, oreimo (in my defense I shipped kyosuke and ayase the funny tsundere friend, not kyousuke and kirino. Also I was literally 14 and klk and oreimo premiered the same summer season and i watched them back to back bc they both aired new episodes on saturdays and i had a crunchyroll sub at the time), sachi iro one room, happy sugar life, killing stalking (ok look i was in it for the psychological horror thriller. but the way that others in the fandom and even the lezhin company advertised it as some *eDgY rOmAnCe* uwu made even me be like. have critical thinking skills and/or get help lmao, this is not what the author intended at all??? so i kinda distanced myself from it bc the other fans were so embarrassing. plus i didnt want to give lezhin money after this controversy that they blacklisted or sabotaged/didnt advertise lgbt+ webcomics and authors in s korea. only koogi got out unscathed bc ks was so popular so the company couldn't do anything to her publicly or pull the ks web advertisements that they already paid for but smaller authors got affected so iirc koogi tweeted about it), king maker (part of the above lezhin issue that particular summer and part just lezhin only localized the first season and they never did the second season?? i think the 2nd season english translation rights went to another webcomic site but idk what it was), etc.
anyways I’m happy and surprised that sugar apple fairy tale is getting an anime. It was def obscure in the US, with only the first two of the light novels fan translated until the fan group’s raws provider got tired and quit to focus on his job or family or something?? Idk, good for him I guess?? Anyways, the group basically went on hiatus or broke up afterwards on that series and so I got the first three raw light novels via rakuten kobo ePub for the purpose of language learning with the translation and raw side by side reading. I didn’t get very far due to my language level being. Absolutely abysmal. But I did like it and was very sad to see that the group only did the first two chapters of the third novel before quitting. I’m happy that the anime is out and plan to watch it and also yen press picked up the rights for the books so I’ll definitely buy it legally now instead of. Poor Google translate and guessing of how to interpret sentences. Lol. Yen press is already on the third one, so I’ll buy the ePub when I get home probably and they have the fourth release scheduled for September 2023 I think. Yay.

Maybe this is weird but recently I was struck with the sad realization that some of my favorite anime is just realistically unwatchable at my maturity and mindset right now. Specifically it was Kill La Kill that really hit me as the first anime that I'm going to feel bitter leaving behind me. As much as I did enjoy the over-the-top theatrics, the sheer idea of rewatching a show almost entirely about naked 16 year-olds just puts me off as I near 30 -- if it came out today, I'd almost definitely criticize its expression of sexuality rather than find it freeing and exciting like I did before.
It's a topic I'm sitting critically on, not helped by the fact that honestly I dont even remember too much of KLK at this point, since I only ever watched it as it aired. It obviously had intended themes to explore with its emphasis on nudity, and not every moment of being naked was for fanservice........... but yeah 99% of it IS about fanservice, titilating the viewers with naked high school girls. And boys, too, I guess. Beyond just nudity, there's also just outright molestation played for laughs, which was never something I took kindly to; it feels like for everything good the series had going on for it, it was undone by at least ten excessive examples of fanservice, each.
Anyway I'm extra conflicted/bitter because this was the kind of thing I'd argued in favor of back in the day lol. Just a different person and mentality then, I suppose, and it's hard for me to just accept that I'm not like that anymore. I'm left wondering what else I'm going to have to eventually disown and distance myself from -- stuff I could be very well watching today, unaware how its problems will be illuminated to me later. And it makes me afraid, genuinely, to get into anything else, because god knows what it will do to make me regret giving it my time.
Ultimately, I do believe fault lies on the creators of such shows. It would have cost nothing to make these characters adults with an actual grip on their sexuality; would have cost nothing to exclude rape humor. At least if it were thought of with these consequences in mind, that the show would age poorly with its aging audience becoming less favorable towards the sexualization of minors. But this is the state of the industry, where it's hyper-normal to make a show about high schoolers getting naked in order to fight each other.
And I guess what also drives me crazy is the amount of people who WON'T disown KLK or other similar anime. Other ~30 year-olds who will still have affection for the show and encourage people to engage with it. Maybe I am crazy! Maybe this is something everyone else just has the capability to ignore and get over with, but I feel this unrelenting guilt and it so often feels like the only resolve to it is to commit to this stance, to get away from the toxicity and remind myself I don't need it. But it's admittedly so hard when my peers will not do the same and seemingly go on living guilt-free; I'm not the scolding type so its not like I'll ever say something to them, but I guess I wonder if theyre ever going to have the same maturity breakthrough I did these last couple years.

the show kill la kill is mention to be unfocused and contradicting itself in terms of story and sometimes themes to be fair: its hard to tell what life fibers and clothing are meant to represent, its doesn't treat rape and sexual assault seriously(even in sences where it would like with raygo) the villains arent even the only ones who does those(look at mako's family and some weird bits of her and ryuko) and they will say one time in an earlier episode but contradict/forget it
Do the Life Fibers and clothing need to represent anything?
Considering possible allegory is valid, and I've certainly done a lot of that when it comes to Kill la Kill. But the literal text of the series, independent of any real-world metaphor, argues early in its story that a species thought of as malicious and harmful to humans can actually be a companion and friend... only to later state that this is only true when the species in question has been genetically modified to be partly human.
And even disregarding how I personally relate to and understand the show in real, non-fictional ways, I find this kind of story decision to be disappointing and sad. As I said last time, "I think a more fleshed-out examination of Life Fibers, where they're not just mindless, vicious beasts, would have provided a much more compelling plot—especially with writer Kazuki Nakashima consistently stressing that Kill la Kill is ultimately a story about 'a lonely young woman meeting and losing an irreplaceable partner' and his attempt to 'make a form of intimacy that transcends love and species'!" There doesn't need to be any metaphor for me to feel that way.
Still, I know that, in the end, Kill la Kill is largely a goofy comedy. But goofy comedies aren't automatically mindless, and I think this one has a lot to say (even if I often have no idea what that is). While I wish it went further and did more with many of the concepts it introduces, a part of me has to wonder if doing so would make the series something else entirely. Maybe my complaints are simply complaints that Kill la Kill isn't something that it's not and never aimed to be.
But I hope it's at least reasonable to wish that its Word-of-God heart—a love between species—was stronger. And, in my mind, even a goofy comedy shouldn't make light of sexual harassment and assault.

Yes. I do. I know. I am aware of tropes and their utilization and how storytelling works and how the entertainment industry works and the ways in which all these things can and do function to create counterproductive messages and fall short of perfect representation. I KNOW. I AM AWARE THAT THINGS HAVE FLAWS. You do not have to keep shouting at me or demand that i preface every comment I make about these works with, “I AM ASHAMED I LIKE THIS BECAUSE I KNOW IT’S pRObLeMaTic.”

sorry im rewatching my discs so yr gonna hear klk pinions from me. but of all the things to criticize about it, still the Dumbest criticism i ever saw was, circa ep 11, that the animation was cheap and lazy. "why does nui just slide around the screen like that, why do they just rotate whole body parts like a paper doll instead of properly animating her, why does she move like a powerpoint transition, why does sanageyama hold a 2-frame pose and just slide to the left then straight down as he falls???? LAZY!!!" im like. biting and tearing ITS CONTEXTUAL. ITS FOR COMEDY. ITS BC NUI IS A SLAPSTICK CARTOON INTRUSION INTO THE BATTLE ANIME. THE GIRL THATS LAYING ACROSS HER ON-SCREEN TEXT AND REACHING THROUGH THE FOUTH WALL IS GOING TO MOVE A BUT STRANGELY TOO!!!!! buting killing vark bark bark its just such a moron take THE ANIMATION IS NOT THE PROBLEM!!!

day 2 and im about to rant bcuz i think abt it constantly (not tumblr drama dw)
Tumblr media
as much as i obsessively love kill la kill (i mean obsessively like no holds barred, klk might as well be my life fibers blood) i really do hate the excessive fanservice
i understand completely that nudity is a theme for the show but nudity can be a theme without all of the sexualization of it (men nosebleeding, characters (almost always females) calling one another skanks and whores n shit for not being dressed modestly, EVERY SINGLE PANTY SHOT)
i dont like senketsu’s battle form because while its cool in concept, it’s just another case of sexy armor syndrome. senketsu hardly covers many of the vital parts of ryuko’s body, same going for junketsu to satsuki.
people usually guard klk with ‘oh, the sexy stuff’s just satire’ and it is from time to time, but when its meant to be fanservice you can fucking tell, and its awful.
that’s why i SUPER adore klk armor redesigns? people get super creative with them and they still look really good!! i saw someone who made senketsu’s transformation look bug-like and it was SUPER cute; another person made both senketsu’s and junketsu’s transformations look super toothy, pointy, and monster-like which is the vibe you’re supposed to get from life fibers!! they really could’ve done something cool with the transformations but they went with the over-sexualized approach and it still kinda disappoints me that they did. from time to time i think of making a redesign for sen’s transformation and applying it to my ryuko muse but i figure no one would read my about or remember if i made it a canonical thing.
oh well, that’s mainly why my ryu’s mainverse is post-canon so she doesn’t wear sen or need to use him much.
