Hello! I have a scene planned for a webcomic where 3 of the characters dye their hair together. One is a black/Chinese girl, one is a Japanese demiboy, and the third is a white trans boy. But I've been hearing lately about how the "Asian girl with a dyed strip in her hair" is a bad trope, and I'm a little worried about this scene in particular now. The girl does dye a strip in her hair while the other two dye all their hair. They're just having fun as friends, but should I change her dye?

PSA: We won’t be covering Asian characters with colored hair questions anymore. They have already been answered in excess.

Asian Girl with Colored Hair Streak

It seems like people are misunderstanding the trope and why it’s controversial. There are plenty of Asian women who dye streaks in their hair in real life! Having an Asian girl character with a streak in her hair is not bad in and of itself, and that’s what “Asian girls with dyed streaks = bad” doesn’t get.  The question people should be asking is: “why is the trope bad?” In this case, the reason Asian girl characters with streaks in their hair are often looked negatively upon has to do with creators often using their hair as a shorthand for a wilder personality and not actively developing them as much as other characters. If your Black/Chinese character has a developed personality, the streaks are fine, because you’re not using her hair as a way to get out of creating her personality. 

So tl;dr: you don’t have to change the dye, there are actual Asian girls and women out there who do this! it is, however, important to research the trope and understand why there may be controversy with it, and to see if what you’re doing negates or reinforces it. 

Finally, as a general note: we have been getting quite a few questions on this trope. This is going to be the last time we address this, since I feel this answer basically covers it.

"you guys should film a sex tape," kai suggests in the background, because he mostly falls on deaf ears over here where he clearly isn't one of the sexually intense main characters hate-eyefucking each other down. that's fine; being the sexually provocative loner has its perks, too; especially one this newly powerful. "if you're going to force people to watch this at least don't do it for free, become someone's last resort on pornhub while they tell themselves they're just watching kittykat."

all these fun magical tingles under his skin only intensify as katherine drags her greedy little paws all over him, but he makes no move to stop her; she's numero uno on his good list for the time being. instead, he offers dimitri a smile. "what was that? speak up, baby girl, it's tough to hear you from all the way down there. where i put you. on your knees. and hey, you seem to enjoy it." kai then takes katherine's hand in his, slipping it off his chest in favor of giving her a little spin, the parody of a dance. "but if you really need more proof, sure, let's take turns having debate class for another five episodes. hi, i'm a heretic—that means witch plus vampire equals uh oh. that means i can do almost whatever i want with zero consequences, like navigate ancient grimoires and unbury those who were buried for reasons and unleash the worst episodes of the walking dead. that means—well, someone sets our little darling kitten here on fire?"

and on fire she goes. not to alarm anyone, but kai's essentially doing two spells in very close proximity here, testing the limits of his own magic, his own fresh rules on siphoning versus original creation—licking flames up katherine's body she can't even feel, because he's also absorbing all the heat, negating any actual damage—his hands coming to drag up her arms and gradually extinguish the flames. just in time, too; that felt a little too close, phew. "tah-dah, safe and sound. but don't get attached," he murmurs, a flicker of a smirk as he quotes derek from moments ago, "i'm just like this."

His pessimism was enough to earn an eye roll from her. Being undermined was something she despised — especially by Damon Salvatore. "Here’s the thing," she countered sharply, her gaze never wavering from his. "I don’t need you to like my plan; I just need it to work. A plan, mind you, that you're still completely clueless about. So unless you have a better idea — which, let’s be honest, you don’t — you might want to shut up and follow my lead." Her tone was dismissive as she turned her attention to the man making the obnoxious slurping noise. But before Katherine could make a proper introduction, she watched as Damon was flung across the warehouse, lightbulbs bursting in sequence like some twisted fireworks display. A smirk spread across her lips, satisfied at the sudden chaos. "Actually, quite the opposite," she replied to Kai, still watching the flickering lights with a hint of amusement. "I think we just became more than just friends."

Her satisfaction only grew as Damon was tossed to his knees right at her feet. She shot an approving glance toward Kai, then looked down at Damon, her eyes gleaming with mischief. The brunette crouched slightly, her fingers trailing lightly under Damon’s chin, forcing him to meet her gaze. "What was that you were saying about my plan? How much it sucks?" she asked in a low, victorious murmur, before moving to stand tall again as she made her way to Kai’s side. "Damon here, is neither a hire nor a bottom, as you so… eloquently put it," she continued, throwing a glance back at Damon with a sly grin. "He wants Klaus dead just as much as I do, so he’s here to help — in whatever capacity necessary."

“Kai’s a heretic or something,” she continued with a sly grin, her eyes flicking over to Damon and then back to Kai, before she slid her hand onto Kai’s chest in a slow, almost teasing, deliberate motion. “And in exchange for a little help turning him into some evil vampire-witch hybrid and offing his twin or whatever—he's agreed to help us. Because, luckily, he just so happens to know a spell or someone. Honestly, I’m a bit fuzzy on the specifics. But the gist is, he knows how to bring back the original witch, who can then resurrect Mikael—the original vampire hunter. Which means, in case you’ve forgotten, our ticket to freedom.”

Thank you! Ok, I have an AU of my favorite cartoon. One of the characters is a genius who invents stuff beyond modern science. This AU takes place in the future (where he's half cyborg) and he has two partially deaf children (both my OCs). One of them ends up using a "cyborg ear" like the dad's when they're older as a sort of replacement. The other one doesn't. The cyborg ear can easily be turned off, kind of like a hearing aid. Is this ok? I'm a little worried deaf ppl might see it as "fixing"?

I recommend looking up Cochlear implants, which is a very similar device to what you describe. I assume it will be more enhanced in future, but its very much a thing today and there is lot of people who have Cochlear implants.

They are indeed controversial among Deaf community - I recommend doing a bit of google search (or at least checking our tag for them - https://deafaq.tumblr.com/tagged/cochlear_implants )

However, since its an existing device, i see no issue with including it in your story. Its a real thing, lot of people have them, and its not a magical cure. Just make sure do some read-up on them and you are fine.

These are my miserable wet cats, subject A (right) and subject B (left). They have been kidnapped by an evil corporation known as tellexx and are being used for unethical experiments (mostly, tellexx is trying to invent time travel. Which they do end up doing btw) they are also tellexx’s company band and are used to spread propaganda via music. Both the subjects are drugged up most of the time on “sugar pills” which fuck up your brain and make you easy to manipulate. Also this thing called thought reform is being used on them which is. Yk. More mind control stuff. Subject A is an autistic little guy who just wants to avoid conflict at all costs and subejct B is the angriest man alive and they are in crazy gay love.

but you reminded me of a v important fact, which is that if you have a pet rat, you basically have to have two bc they are v social creatures.  they will literally get sick and start pulling out their own fur if they don’t have a roommate to play with.
