Episode four.

MASTERLIST

pairing: XO, Kitty's Min Ho x Female Reader

genre: Fluff, angst, enemies-to-lovers, slow burn, coming-of-age.

warnings: Swearing, mentions of divorce, mentions of deceased parents, arguing. (And Min Ho gets on my nerves in this one.)

summary: Transferring to KISS was the last thing you had asked for and, yet, a certain tall boy made it seem both worse and better than you expected.

"You kicked her out?" you yelled as soon as you stepped in your dorm.

Min Ho frowned in confusion. "What are you talking about?"

"Kitty. I just walked her to her new dormitory. I thought we agreed you wouldn't call Campus Police."

He got up from the couch and approached you close enough so you had to look up at him. "We agreed I wouldn't call Campus Police on you, which I didn't do. You never said anything about Portland Stalker."

"I wouldn't have minded that much but since her new dorm mate is weird as hell, I am concerned."

He shrugged his shoulders. "Then don't be? I don't get why you all worked up on this."

You groaned and left to barricade yourself in your room. First day of school went on even worse than you expected. You were startled when you phone started to ring.

"Y/N! We just wanted to check on you. So, first day?"

The excitement in your aunt's voice made you feel bad for not enjoying as much as you should. They had been trying to get you the scholarship for a while to give you the best scholar environment and you couldn't be ungrateful to them. Especially not when it was all Principal Lim's doing for allowing you to stay there.

"Great. I met up with Yuri and made some friends. Classes seem fun and I like my roommates."

They smiled through the small screen of your phone. "We're happy to hear that. Tomorrow, you have a class with me. I can't wait to see you there." your uncle said excitedly.

"Me too. I'll go to sleep now. Good night!"

"Good night, Y/N! Take care."

After changing into your pyjamas – that were surely too revealing for some people but you didn't care at this point – you went to the bathroom for your night routine. Min Ho was already there, doing his own skin care. While he didn't talk to you, he still stepped aside to leave you some space. Him checking you out didn't go unnoticed by you but you decided to not say anything about it. You brushed your teeth quickly and then proceeded to apply your primer.

"That's mine." Min Ho pointed out.

"It's not, I just brought it with me."

He chuckled. "I don't think you did. This is worth $200 and my mom got it for me."

You observed him take it from you. "You do realize I have money too, right?"

"Because of Principal Lim and Yuri? Yeah." he attempted to mock.

You took the primer back. "Because my rich parents died five years ago."

Stunned, he didn't move for an instant. While satisfied with the reaction you got from him, you began to regret spilling out about your parents. You usually kept it to yourself that even Yuri didn't know what happened.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know." he said, his voice now much softer.

"It's fine."

You went back to your room immediately. You didn't want to discuss it any further, nor did you want Min Ho to be pitying you. You needed sleep, and fast.

A week went by pretty quickly. Your uncle taught your history class and you both agreed to not act like family in class, although most of the students knew you were relatives. You bonded closely with Kitty over that week and rarely ever saw Yuri since she was so busy with everything going on in her life. Plus, Kitty was avoiding her as much as possible.

You, yourself, had avoided Min Ho successfully for most part. The only times you really interacted with him were in chemistry class or in the morning where he would always make you a cup of coffee.

You were walking to the library when Kitty intercepted you.

"Help. Me."

Analyzing her appearance, you took in the bags under her eyes and the hairdo that seemed have been done last minute. You held back a laugh and Kitty simply told you you could laugh at her.

"I'm so sorry, but what is this?" you sneered and gesture her whole figure.

"My roommate is the worst human being on this planet. She eats all day, screams at night, throws tissues at me – used tissues – and I have never smelled such a horrid odor. Get me out of there."

"Have you talked to the dormitory advisors?"

"Yes but they said the girls dorm is full."

You smiled apologetically. "Then there's not much you can do, I'm afraid."

She whined. "I hate this."

"You'll be fine, I'm sure of it."

"Says the one who seems to live the perfect life with the guys. How is that going for you?"

You let out a chuckle. "Q is the sweetest and Dae is pretty respectful of my privacy. But then there's freaking Min Ho who can't seem to give me a break."

She squealed. "Oh, Min Ho! I almost forgot about him." she wiggled her eyebrows at you.

"You're so annoying." you shook your head in despair.

"I know." she snickered. "Ah, by the way. Remember how Q and I found a baby bracelet?"

"Ah, that."

"I wonder how I can find my half-sibling. Do you think they would want to meet me? Do they know our mom has passed?"

You sighed loudly. "Kitty, I love talking to you but we went over the same questions yesterday."

"Sorry." she said in a small voice. "I'm just really excited."

"I know." you gave her a smile.

"We have a watch party tomorrow evening at your dorm, by the way, if you didn't know."

"I didn't know." you frowned.

"It's normal, I just planned it with Q. You can join us. Min Ho's going to participate."

You faked a smile and walked straight to the library. She really was determined when she had a plan in mind...

Q had begged you to join the Outdoors club. While you weren't one for physical exercise, you did love enjoying nature. So you agreed to go to the first hike at least. When you considered having packed everything you needed, meaning sunscreen and a bottle of water, you went to the living area and just had to listen to Min Ho whine like a child.

"I really don't remember giving permission to Y/N to use my custom blend products. She doesn't even need to use them, she has her own stuff!"

Dae zipped up his bag and ran out the door in a second. "Sorry, man. Got to go." he said quickly before closing the door.

"Thanks, great talk!" he yelled back even though Dae couldn't hear him anymore.

He seemed to not have noticed you were in the living room as he slumped on a stool and took out his phone. He looked at it for a bit and then sighed.

"You're always busy, you're never around." he said out loud before dialing to call someone.

"My darling boy!" a female voice spoke.

"Hi, Mom! You're doing good?" he waved at the phone.

"Yeah, just about to head to set." she informed.

"I miss you."

Your heart warmed up from the cute interaction. You were happy to know he had a great relationship with his mother, which you wished you still had.

"But since you're more important, should I tell them to wait?"

He paused for an instant. "No, it's okay. Let's just talk next time."

"Okay, kisses."

He hummed as the call ended. His head down, he folded his phone and breathed out. He kept the same position and you noticed that his jaw clenched.

"Your mom seems sweet."

He turned to look at you and was suddenly alert of his surroundings. "You heard?"

"Not on purpose, I was getting ready for the hike."

"I see. Yeah, my mom's great."

"That's good." you awkwardly went to the front door and put on your shoes while he stood still at the counter, not having moved much. "See you later, Min Ho."

"See you."

When you joined the group outside, you were surprised to see Kitty already stretching out. You walked up to her and asked what she was doing there.

"Q suggested I joined the club so I can have some time with Dae without Yuri around." she explained. "As friends, you know?"

"That's a good idea, yeah." you nodded in agreement.

Q was quick to arrive and encouraged everyone present to do some stretching beforehand. Dae then arrived as well and was surprised to see Kitty there. He joined her the moment he laid eyes on her and she explained to him that she wanted to stay friends. But it was rapidly ruined when Yuri spawned out of nowhere like a character in a video game. She interrupted their conversation and led Dae away from Kitty.

"Do I really have to hear from Min Ho that you're hanging out with Kitty?" you overheard her say.

Just when you thought the man had some sort of feelings behind his pretty face, he had to pull a move like this. Kitty changed spots and, after sending a glare to Yuri's direction, you moved as well and positioned yourself next to Q.

"Alright, who's ready to go on a hike?"

And Min Ho spawned too, and just right next to you. You were about to question him on his presence but Dae was as perplexed as you were and asked him first.

"What? I can't hang out with my best friends?"

You rolled your eyes at his behaviour. If there wasn't anyone else around, you'd definitely be beating the shit out of him. And what annoyed you even more was Madison coming up to him with a flirtatious look on her face. Though he surprised you by not looking so thrilled with her advances. You were thankful that Q started the hike soon later and you stuck with Kitty to avoid having to witness Madison almost drooling over Min Ho. It also allowed Kitty herself to forget about Yuri's presence.

"You guys are making great time. Let's keep with the pace, people!" Q encouraged proudly as you were almost to the top.

Walking behind Yuri, you almost walked into her when she stopped so suddenly and let out a yell. She jumped around trying to get worms off her and Kitty took the opportunity to go see Dae.

"We're in nature, embrace it." Q tried to get some sense into her but she kept on yelling.

"They're just worms, Yuri." you said but in vain, she wasn't hearing you.

"Is it on me? I thought the worm followed me, where is it?" she talked to herself.

"I'm surprised you aren't the one screaming about bugs." Min Ho joked as he joined your side.

You moaned in annoyance. "I'm not talking to you."

"Why not?"

"I think you can answer that yourself." you spat out.

Not looking in front of you properly, you didn't see that Kitty had tripped. Luckily, Dae caught her but as for you, you halted your moves too fast and fell backwards. And again, Min Ho was the one who caught you in time.

"So clumsy." he tsked at you.

You quickly broke away from him and cleared your throat. Meanwhile, Yuri interrupted the duo in front of you and Q went on about safety before walking again. You definitely regretted coming here.

"You still haven't answered my question."

"What question?" you acted clueless.

Min Ho chuckled. "So we're being petty now?"

"I'm always petty with you." you argued.

"You weren't this morning."

You groaned, growing impatient with him. "Can't you leave me alone for a day?"

He didn't know what to respond and you took it as he understood the message. With that being said, you fastened your pace and arrived next to Dae.

"Hey." he smiled at you.

"Not in the mood, just walk."

The poor guy gulped but listened to you and didn't speak to you again. But your hike was halted once again when Kitty and Yuri started to run to the end.

"Just, make sure that you stick together!" Q yelled at them.

"I'm pretty sure they can't hear you." you smiled at him sadly.

"I know." he shrugged.

Min Ho then went to Dae causing you to walk away from them. You hated this, all of it.

"Why did you come?" Dae complained to his friend.

"Because I'm looking out for you, that's why I called Yuri."

"Let me deal with it on my own."

Dae came next to you again, visibly avoiding the man as much as you were.

"So much drama." you heard Madison from behind.

"No one asked." you said loudly for her to hear.

With Kitty running away from the hike, you went on with the watch party without her. After Q set up everything, he sat next to Florian while you sat on the floor to let them have their moment. Focused on the screen, you were disappointed to get interrupted by Min Ho walking out of his room.

"Hey! My mom is in this. She plays the king's second daughter."

"Nice, now shut it." you said rudely but he dismissed your request as Florian asked him about her.

"Does she still act?"

"Oh, yeah. She's absolutely smashing it right now in LA. She's up for a role as a mermaid in the mafia."

"Great, can you go now?" you asked, insistent since you didn't want him to be ruining Q's moment just like he had done with Kitty.

He ignored you again and walked to the couch, asking Florian to scooch over to leave him space to sit.

"Oh, I could give you, guys, the behind-the-scenes dirt on this." he continued and you mentally cursed at him.

"Okay, I love dirt." Florian replied.

He finally shut it for a while and you thanked whoever for it. As per usual, it didn't last long.

"It took that guy twenty takes to nail that."

You threw your head back in disbelief. Was he that clueless to not get a hint? The thousands of glares he got from you and Q weren't enough?"

"Oh, hey, look! It's my mom."

"Oh, wow." Florian commented. "She's gorgeous."

"I know! Thank God I got her bone structure."

"Taking any opportunity to make it about yourself, uh?" you turned to look at him.

The infamous smirk was already there. "Always."

"Wait..." one of the other guys said. "Didn't your mom and dad have that messy divorce?"

"The whole mess was exaggerated to sell magazines." he said in defense right away. "But yeah, they did get divorced."

That part was said which a much calmer tone, it sounded almost sad to you. Determining that it was enough of him ruining Q's evening, you let out a long breath.

"Okay, we get the point." you announced as you got up. "Your mom's an actress, it's great and all but I need to talk with you."

You took him by the arm and forced him up. He tried to stay at his seat but you were stronger than he expected. So he let you forcefully get him off the couch and you dragged him back to his room, not forgetting to close the door.

"Is it the moment that we're supposed to kiss after you reveal you have a crush on me?"

You scoffed. "So you really do think about yourself all the time. I was saving your ass from talking any more about your parents and that's how you thank me?"

He smiled with a knowing look. "So you do care about me."

"I care more about Q. Tonight was for him to make a move on Florian but you couldn't shut it."

"Well, how was I supposed to know that?"

You deadpanned at him. "Really? Ah, you're killing me."

"Fine, maybe I did get the message but I'm looking out for my friend."

"Yeah, just like you're looking out for Dae when it's none of your business."

"Y/N, this isn't your business either."

You huffed. "You're damn right it isn't but for some reason, I get dumped with all of it and it's a hassle to carry so many drama when it doesn't even involve me."

"Just go away then!" he snapped at you. "If it's that hard to deal with."

Your jaw clenched as you stayed still, glaring at one another. You scoffed once more and left his room without adding anything else. It took you aback when you heard him follow you. The other guys had already left so only Q remained in the living room. That made arguing less embarrassing.

"Y/N." You stopped and waited for him to continue. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean that."

You went to hide in your room and you heard him sighed in defeat. You didn't know what was up with him today but it only confirmed to you that you wanted nothing to do with him.

I think we're not talking about the hot tub scene enough, at least not in the way we should.

Everyone is like "!!! Parallels!!" Okay yeah.

But do you realize how much it takes to have feelings for someone, get rejected, tell them to move on, jump into a relationship, and then 3rd-wheel at your crush's date, invite them BOTH to some ski weekend with your dad (because you felt like you couldn't do it alone), for some reason pick up your crush at her dorm instead of your own girlfriend ("covey, car's here") and then see her kiss her roommate who is also in a relationship, ask her not to ruin your ski trip, cover for them both, only for your dad to bail which is your insecurity. (And have the gang realize it and also that there are no pictures of you) Then realize your bully from middle school is on the trip.

Then have a love letter of your crush appear and one big fight DOES ruin your ski trip.

Minho SAID in s1 that lying to your friends is the worst and something he would never do, but he did it for kittey.

He didn't just step into the tub; he did in clothes so Kittey wouldn't feel uncomfortable, talked to her without judgement, and even when his gf appeared, he stood in the tub with Kittey.

I have this theory that Minho's playboy agenda might just be a protection mechanims because 1) he experienced his parents splitting up and his dad cheating on all of his wives 2) his dad prioritized his brother over him and his mom barely cared as well.

That man can cook for himself because he always had to make food for himself if u ask me... and because of THAT, he helped Kitty at Chuseok.

this whole thing is triggering Minho so badly because he's used to being the second choice - I would even go as far as saying he is so obsessed with his looks because he wants to be seen.

So as soon as Kittey has this theory about Stella, he sees it as someone criticizing his choices again.

And he STILL choses Kitty after that. That is how important it is for him, because he knows what a broken family looks and feels like.

With Yuri specifically, Kitty is the second choice and even though her chaotic being/feeling (and Yuri's messed up feelings AND STELLA'S DOING OFC) messes up everything, he stays by her side because he knows what it feels like to be the second choice.

Which basically means he transmutes some of his family trauma for her sake. Just sayin.

Okay Dae, it's weird to serenade someone over the phone but it's NOT weird to do in detention with gum scraper microphone:

"Knowledge is overrated. My strongest opinions are on things I know almost nothing about." Min Ho's dad Mr. Moon would probably make a great politician

"So, there's this great DJ playing tonight at this queer teen club in Itaewon." "Do you want to go?" "Like, with you?" "Yes. Unless you don't date girls." Go Praveena, being bold!

"So Simon wasn't your mum's boyfriend?" "No, he was her cousin." Not to point fingers, but sometimes, sometimes, this wasn't mutually exclusive in bygone eras of Asia broadly

Ghgjkhgkgh Yuri and Kitty are constantly telling each other lies of omission. Kitty lying last year about Alex, then this year about her feelings, and Yuri lying last year about Dae, and now about her mum. I think they really would not a good couple make

"You've been giving me shit for years, and you're gay?" Jin said: I'm gay, I'm homophobic, we exist

PLEASE NOT DAE TRAUMA DUMPING ON THE RANDOM STRAIGHT GIRLS IN THE GAY CLUB

"I never want to get in the way of you being there for a friend, but this is clearly not our night. I'm gonna go. See you around, Kitty Cat." What a short-lived date

"Yuri said she did not want to talk to Jina, and I'm following her lead, and if you were a real friend, you would too." Juliana has so far brought nothing but possessive vibes to the function. Develop another personality trait!

Juliana took that statement as a threat and developed the trait of plagiarizing Kitty's life advice:

"For a man who claims to have his finger on the pulse, you should know that bullying is so over, Mr Moon." This would be a fine statement if I didn't think Stella was trying to harm Min Ho in some way. Run baby, run!

"I bet he thinks you're a real bad ass now. I know I do." Min Ho nooooooo

Kitty running interference for Q so he doesn't miss the track meet. She really is a good friend!!

Perhaps Q should interrogate himself on why he's exclusively drawn to men with no moral compass

"Now I'm stuck watching Yuri and Juliana make out all the time." "Excuse me?" "I said that I'm always watching Yuri and Juliana put on their makeup." The ONE time Professor-turned-Principal Lee using his observation skills and it bites Kitty in the ass

Somehow I missed Madison Miller. I don't know, her Koreaboo vibes are outweighed by her general Chill Girl Boss energy

Props to Juliana for owning up to using Kitty's advice

"You must get your cockiness from your white side." Q, PLEASE

"Do you want to come? I could always use another set of eyes." "And crash your date? No thanks." 1) Yuri's the only one with any sense of romantic boundaries and 2) Yuri admitting she's jealous bc of the time capsule heist date

I like that Dae is upholding what I consider a core tenet of K-and-J-Dramas, which is the Backdoor Boyband Launch

"No! It's giving flamingo." The sincerity with which Eunice delivered this critique takes me out:

"I don't know what you think this is, but I don't want to do it anymore." "I thought this was flirting." "Well, I'm not interested." Jin thinks ruining Q's track-and-field experience is the high school equivalent of pulling on his pigtails

"Praveena just saved our asses. I mean it's only our second date." "Date? She's sweet-talking an old lady while you're in close quarters with the hottest guy at school." He made it in a stupid way, but Min Ho does have a point, Kitty

Min Ho is a good guy for inviting his crush AND the girl she's dating to his ski trip weekend

"What would I do without you?" [Chimes play while Yuri looks at Kitty longingly] Oh, this ski trip is going to be SUCH a mess

In this case, I do actually understand Juliana's position. Ignoring an important event for what's ultimately not time-dependent (a VCR search) would be upsetting

"My hopes, they're up here. Because I like you, a lot." Not as much as you seem to like Yuri or Min Ho, Kitty! I think everyone in this show could benefit from being single for a while

"She's the cute one in the family." "I think there might be more than one." Okay, Dae and Eunice, I'm on board!

"Are you guys fighting or.... another f-word?" "Kitty Song-Covey!" [Mock outrage] "Flirting!" Kitty and Q are my favourite friendship

"I could move in with you and Hana if you take my advice and ask her out. You two would make such a good couple!" Awwww Kitty's matchmaking is hereditary from Eve

"By the time this time capsule is opened, I'll be in my fifties. Wow. I'll be award-winning journalist. Married to someone smart and kind. And we'll have kids. At least one. A girl, I hope." I really feel for Kitty watching this, knowing how it all turns out

"She sounds just like Margot. She looks exactly like Lara Jean. She..." "She was a meddler, like you." Yuri saying it so Kitty doesn't have to <3

BOOOOOOOO. I told you this ski trip was going to be a mess:

"What am I gonna do now? I need to talk to Yuri." "What you do now is get to the cars. And try not to ruin my ski weekend." Props to Min Ho for keeping his feelings on the inside, unlike everyone else

Also I feel like if anything would cure Min Ho of his lingering feelings, it's seeing Kitty be actively involved in cheating

[In Korean] "But I thought you were rich." "No I'm not. I live in the same neighbourhood as you." "Really?" [In English] "You really don't know me at all." [Eunice skips away] With every interaction, I like Eunice more

The way Stella perked up upon finding out Mr. Moon has an office at the ski cabin makes me think that's her agenda. She wants dirt on him somehow

"Intense running also causes intense... runs." Q, Chaos Queen (Self-Titled) and IBS King

"God can't fix everything, Min Ho." "Really. I thought that was his whole deal." Min Ho said: I'm agnostic

Q is NOT an IBS King, he is simply a fool who hides his Poorly-Chosen Hook-Up in His Friend's Ski Cabin

"The way things are going, someone's getting their heart broken this weekend." My money is Juliana, Praveena and Kitty, in that order

"Min Ho, can't you make it any warmer in here?" "Next Seollal, book a flight to Cebu." HAHAH Min Ho and Madison is also a dynamic I enjoy

"Min Ho and Dae hate you, and rightfully so. You bullied them. And if they find out we're still hooking up after your track meet sabotage, they'll never let me live it down." Again Q, please interrogate WHY you are attracted to a guy like this:

As Min Ho prophesized, Kitty did in fact ruin the ski weekend:

Also running theory on what the hell Stella's problem is, because if it were just about Min Ho, she wouldn't actively be interfering with Kitty's life also (or at least I suspect she has, no one else has a reason to bring the letter along or access to it): I think she's Simon/Seojoon's daughter? So she's resentful about Kitty and Eve, and trying to replace her in a way, by slowly ingratiating herself and driving a wedge between Kitty and her friends? This show does love a secret relative

Awwwww Kitty helping Jin to prompose. She's back on her matchmaking bullshit (complimentary)

I was drinking my latte and eating my food while listening to a mix Yuri gave me as I was doing homework.

I noticed it was late, so I went to bed.

The next day. I went to check to see if my grades were high enough to stay and… they were eek!

And so were Kitty’s and Min ho!

Why am I thinking about it.

Time skip: few hours later.

During lunch, I sat with Yuri.

“Andrea, Kitty got expelled.” Yuri said.

“What?”

“I think it was because she was living in the boys dorm.”

“Oh, that sucks.”

I feel bad for Kitty, I mean she is my sister after all.

Time skip: After school

As I was going to the airport to meet Kitty because she still had her location on, she was with Dae.

Once Dae left, I went to Kitty.

“Kitty!” I’m not too late, am I?”

“No, you’re not. But I have to go soon.”

“Okay, good.”

“Why?”

“I’m really sorry for ghosting you for no reason. But once you get back I promise I’ll explain everything.”

“I.. um. I don’t know how to respond.”

“You don’t have too, you can respond to that after winter break if your back. But you should go. I love you by the way.”

“Stay safe by the way.”

“I will, and so should you. I’ll call you during break?” Kitty said.

“For sure, I heard that you got expelled, but I personally think you’ll actually be expelled.”

“But she told me personally.”

“So? Maybe Yuri has your back. I should really get going.” I said hugging her.

“Bye puppy.” She said hugging me back.

“Bye kitty .” I said as I watched her leave.

When Kitty was home and had her stuff arranged , Kitty called me.

“ANDREA, ANDREA!” Kitty said.

“Hm?”

“Okay, so guess what.”

“What?”

“MIN HO WAS ON THE SAME PLANE ON ME.”

“How do you know, and why?”

“He was on there because he was going to LA to see his mom. I know because he sat with me.”

“He was in economy? But why?”

“He thought I could use a friend.”

“Okay.”

“Anyway, the reason why I called you is to tell you that he confessed to me.”

“WHAT! WHAT DID YOU SAY?!”

“I told him that I don’t feel the same. Because I like Yuri, but I didn’t tell him that.”

“How did that happen?”

“It was during Min ho’s Madness Party when she was djing.”

“ Not surprised. But no wondered why you looked weird when we had fan lessons with Yuri and she when she was close to you, you had a weird look.”

“Was it that obvious?”

“To me, yea. It kinda was.”

“Oh, but you’re my twin, so you get it.”

“Did he get mad or anything?”

“No, it understands how I just don’t have feelings for him, but we’re still friends!”

“That good, Question, but do you wanna know a fun fact about me?”

“Sure?”

“I like Min ho…”

“Wait, really?” How did that happen?”

“I just developed feelings over time. But when I saw him and Madison kissing, I just had enough, I guess.”

“Oof, wait.. I just got an email for KISS…”

“Read it out loud so I can hear.”

“OMG, I CAN GO BACK TO KISS!”

“REALLY? YAY! See I told you, Yuri has your back.”

“Yea, she does.”

“Oh it’s kinda late, I have to sleep Kitty, I have modeling early tomorrow.”

Winter break was mainly three things:

Modeling, hanging with Juliana and Yuri, and talking with Kitty (my favorite one.)

But Min ho was on my mind most of my day.

He confessed to Kitty, so he likes her.

But he does only like her?

Maybe, I still could have a chance.

It was the same thing everyday.

I woke up really early, took hours to get ready, take even more hours to do the photo-shot, eat in between, go home, finish making clothes/ dresses / whatever, call Kitty for an hour or more, sleep, and then repeat.

“Andrea, you know, when school is back in session, I’m holding a raffle for five people to join the modeling company for a 2 weeks to a month. It depends if they want to go longer if they like it.” Jenny said.

“Wait, really.”

“Yea, I hope you don’t mind sharing the third floor.”

“It’s fine. I mean it’s huge! There’s like 10 guest beds in there.” I said fake smiling.

Five people?

What if one of them is Min ho?

Gosh, I would die.

It’s impossible, there’s a lot of people at KISS, so it’s unlikely.

“I hope that’s okay with you.”

“Dont worry, it’s completely fine.”

“Great, I have to go tho. I have a meeting. Bye dear.” Jenny said before leaving.

“Bye!” I said.

Let’s hope I’m lucky for whoever wins the raffle .

Alone time

Ash Lynx x reader

A/n: Banana fish broke me, but writing is my coping mechanism, so...This is an AU where Ash and the reader are married and live in Japan, Ash being a model. Also, Shorter is alive cause I said do ( i would die for him to live tbh). I am so sorry for any mistakes.

Babysitting is a very challenging task, especially when the kid is a carbon copy of the most intelligent, cheeky and bratty man Eiji had ever met. Isaac Callenreese was giving the man a headache and pills were not fixing it. Sure, he knew what he was getting into and knew how much Ash and Y/N needed a break from parenting, but why on earth did he agree? At least Shorter was there to help him right?

Wrong! Shorter was like a second kid. Yelling, running, coloring, making a mess and getting little Isaac even more agitated. Just how much energy did the 5 year old have?

“Shorter, please! You are 30! Your playing days are over. You’re gonna break something and I will yell. I almost had Isaac under control, but then you came along to ruin the peace we had. Isaac come here right now or I’ll call Ash!”

“Jeez, Eiji...you almost sound like a grandpa! I haven’t seen Isaac in about a year. I missed him a lot, you know? Little gremlin did a lot of growing up!” said Shorter, with the same goofy smile he had all those years ago. Isaac was seated on the his lap, looking up at his favourite uncle with a wide grin. Based off the resemblance between him and Ash, Eiji could already sense some sort of comment coming.

“Nuh-uh. I wanna stay right here. Call dad “dad” please. And I love uncle Shorter, he’s taller, funnier and smarter than you, uncle Ji. He was telling me how dad knows how to ride a motocycle! It doesn’t get better than this!”

“Yes it does. If you stay quiet for five more minutes, I can get the rice done and I can tell you how Ash and Y/N..”

“Mom and dad, uncle Ji!”

“How mom and dad met while we eat. Does that sound nice?”

“Dunno, let me ask uncle Shorter too.” The two began whispering to each other while Eiji rolled his eyes. Just one more hour and Ash would be here to pick his spawn up. After a minute, both Shorter and Isaac nodded their heads and went to sit down at the kitche table.

Once the table was set and the rice was done cooking, Eiji put it is bowls are brought it to the table. They all dug in, but Isaac seemed to be watching Eiji with great intrest, expecting the story he was promised.

“So Ash and Y/N...”

“Mom and dad. Continue uncle Ji.”

“Mom and dad met around 9 years ago. They met here, in Tokyo, and I am proud to announce that I am the one who got them to meet up, since Y/N went to the same highschool as me. We were both on the drama club in my third year. She was about 2 years younger than me, but she was so mature. Anyway, they started dating around three months after they met. The had a really pretty relationship. You dad was so hooked he embarrassed himself in front of her on multiple ocations. They got married two years later, lived together for two more years and then you came along. You were a very loved little boy. I wish I took a picture of the face your dad made when he held you for the first time.”

“Yeah! He teared up, but don’t tell him you know. You had this little puff of blond hair on your head, it was as fluffy as the little kitty we saw this morning, if not fluffier.” Isaac had look in his eyes that Eiji had only seen once before and that was when Ash told him about Dino and his childhood. The tiny blond seemed to be so vulnarable almost like a porcelain figure.

“What about mom? Was she happy to see me?” There it was. The love Isaac, much like his father, held for her. It was like they would both die if it wasn’t for her love.

“Well of course she was. She really loves you, you know? Your mom loved you even before she had the pleasure of holding you. You have been one of her favourite people ever since she found out you were in her belly. They both love you a lot.”

“Then why am I here? Why wouldn’t they take me with them? Why do they want alone time?” Eiji couldn’t find an answer. He looked at Shorter, who still had that dumb grin.

“Well, Isaac, mom and dad need to rest every once in a while. Since mom got pregnant with your brother or sister, she hasn’t really been able to rest properly, so dad wanted alone time with her to help her rest, but I am sure they will both be so very happy to see you.”

Just like magic, there was a knock at the door, Eiji went to open it, while Isaac trailed behind him, with his little backpack in hand. The door opened to reveal Ash and the boy jumped in his arms at the speed of light.

“Wow! Hi bub! I missed you so much. How was today hmm? Did you have fun with uncle Ji and uncle Shorter? Were they nice to you?”

“Mhm, they told me how you and mama met. I miss mama, is she in the car?”

“No bub, she’s at home. She missed you too. Told me we should race all of the cars and get home in under ten minutes. We have cake.” And with that, Isaac was set back on the ground and the little boy dashed to the car.

“Damn gremlin didn’t even say bye. Here i was thinking we have something special.”

“Hi Shorter! Hi Eiji! I can’t thank you enough for tonight. She really needed it.”

“It’s ok Ash. He is a little loud and Shorter here is never truly helpful, but it’s our pleasure. Are Y/N and the baby ok?”

“Hm, not really. I mean the baby seems to be fine, but she isn’t. Throws up everything she eats. The doctor said it is because her body is getting used to the pregnancy, but this didn’t happen when we had Isaac. I’m just worried for her.”

“She’s strong. She can take it I’m sure.” Shorter nodded, agreeing with Eiji’s statement.

“I know Eiji, I’m not worried about that. Truth is she seems happy to be pregnant. She’s beaming all the time, even after she got everything she ate out, and I feel bad. I feel like she’s in pain. Her smile makes me feel even worse.” Shorter laid a hand on his best friend’s shoulder, taking his sunglasses off.

“Ash...listen to me. Y/N is someone who’s never lied to you about anything. She’s been genuine about everything. She would never fake a smile and she would tell you if she wanted to abort the baby. The fact that she’s smiling and being her bubbly self only means that the pregnacy isn’t that hard on her. Trust me Ash. I see the look in her eyes when the baby is brought up in any conversation. She’ll be fine. You’ll be a bigger family. Loosen up a little.”

“Thank you Shorter. I owe both of you a drink. I’ll call you. Thank you for babysitting again.” And with that, all three of tehm smiled at each other while Ash picked the tiny shark backpack and went back to the car.

Once inside, the older blond turned towards the younger one, smiling.

“Ready to see mom, bub?”

“Mhm! Is she feeling better?”

“Yep.”

The car ride was one of the happy moments Ash wanted to hold onto. The sang together and talked about how Shorter told Isaac about the motorcycle.

“It’s true, you know? I do know how to ride one. When you’re older, I can teach you too.”

“I wanna ride one now. I’ve seen my friends with theirs, I want one too!”

“Those are lame. I’m talking about the real ones. That’s the true fun.”

Once at home, Ash dropped everything on the floor and went to help his son hung his coat on the wall. The little boy jumped out of his red sneakers and ran down the hall yelling for his mom.

“In the kitchen baby. I was cutting you a slice of cake.It’s vanilla, since I know you like the chocolate one’s less. Where’s daddy?”

“Right behind you.” said Ash, placing his hands on her hips and swaying her a little. She turned around to give him a kiss on the cheek, but her 5 month bump got in the way, making her pull a frustred face and Ash smile even more. Isaac pushed his dad to the side a little, making grabby hands at his mom. No matter how old he acted, his real age was always given away by his gestures around his mom.

Getting his slice of cake, Isaac turned back towards the living room. Eating on the couch was never truly forbidden.

“Mama, tomorrow is Yuri’s birthday. He celebrating it at home, I have the invitation in my drawing notebook. Can I go?”

“Sure you can. we just have to go buy a gift in the morning.”

“A birthday huh? That means a little more alone time for us two.” Y/N hid her face in her husband’s neck, smiling a little. Ash’s finger went to the back of her neck, getting her to look up at him to give her a kiss, but then...

“Gross! He likes cars mama, go brainstorm on that insted of smooching dad in the kitchen!”

Aaaand Snarly (my mother) has gotten to the Rostelecom Cup! This is the one I’m most excited for, just cause there’s so many new characters.

TIS THE SEASON FOR YURI PARALLELS

She laughs when Yuri calls himself the Ice Tiger

She was very worried by the Grandpa’s back giving out at the fly tackle, and distressed when Nikolai worried about if the piroshki were good.

“Say they’re delicious you little bitch!”

Cringed when I told her “Sala” is a mistranslation of Sara.

She GASPED when Seung-Gil Lee was being rude to Sara.

She snorted at JJ’s little finger guns. And then I told her it was his initials.

She’s worried for Phichit, since he might not make it to the final. And it’s not like he has plot armor to guarantee it — he’s a minor character in the end.

Laughing at the Nishigori triplets antics.

“Is it racist for a South Korean man to skate to some Mexican bullfighting kind of song?” (Right off the bat when Seung-Gil starts skating)

Snarly found the discussion of sexual performance inflation funny. I think. She snorted, at least.

She was so worried when Seung-Gil fell! I get the feeling she hates seeing any of the skaters fail.

Re: Emil — “Why does he have the beard? It’s pubic hair.”

She loved Viktor being cold to JJ.

During Michele’s skate:

“Am I getting weird incest-y vibes with these super close ups?” (About the Crispinos. She’s totally right.)

She did like the note about Michele doing his sister’s signature combination jump. She also gagged when he said they would ‘be together forever.’

She got sad when she saw Makkachin by himself staring at the buns. I don’t know how she’ll cope cause it gets WORSE.

Though when he fell on the axel she said “oh, baby.”

She thinks the animation is better in closeup.

When JJ make the ‘ladies first’ crack to Yurio she called JJ a “homophobic fuck.” Here, here!!

She laughed at Yurio’s little pouty stance.

And at all JJ’s inane drama about his “aesthetic.”

Mocking the lyrics to Theme of King JJ. It grew on me, but it really is ridiculous the first time you hear it.

“I keep hoping he’ll skate into a wall.”

Gagged when he kissed the ice. “I hope it’s like licking a pole and his tongue gets stuck there.”

“OH NO” when we find out about Makka.

“Why would they tell him? What can he do about it now?” (I reminded her about Vicchan once it ended. She was even more distressed.)

She laughed at their collective shock and horror at the idea of Yakov coaching Yuuri.

And for episode nine:

She thought it was cute when Viktor said to hug Yakov if he needed help.

She already thought the Grandpa was sweet before she saw the Katsudon pirosky. She thought it was so cute!

“Maybe not now???” (about Sara’s intervention with Michele)

“Her timing is not great”

Michele: *Yuuri looks like a closet pervert* Mom: “He’s one to talk”

She HATES the sibling incest. She said “I might have to hide in the other room.”

She likes Mila’s hair

Eyerolls at the sibling incest.

“They both have purple eyes. Anime logic.”

Michele: *this is goodbye, Sara* My Mom: “She’s your sister. You will see her again.”

“Whats with the sparkly gloves?”

“Ew, girl!” (At the start of Sara’s conversation with Mickey)

She really likes the smash cuts from skaters being super serious to the food plates. She thinks it’s funny

She likes Yurio’s hairdo and his skate decorations.

“Nice! …I can’t believe I’m commenting on this like it’s an actual skater.”

“Oh, no!!” (when Yurio says he’s tired)

She thinks the Katsudon nickname is very funny.

I started learning a little Japanese since my first watch of the show, so now I can appreciate just how dickish it was for JJ to call Yurio “Yuri-chan.” But that’s for another time.

“Put in your earplugs, dude” (to Yuuri)

She’s so worried about Yuuri throughout the performance. She said she agreed with him sending Viktor away, since he’d be so guilty if he didn’t, but clearly it had consequences.

“Is he doing good?”

Laughing at Yakov’s glare. A lot of faces made at Yakov’s scary lecture though.

She thought the hug was cute though!

She guessed JJ’s “king” line before it happened.

“It’s kind of funny having the bad guy be Canadian. No one makes Canadians the bad guys.”

Me: He’s the token straight along with Georgi. (My mom: “who?”) Me: the crying one with the eyeliner.

“Please fall. Please fall. Please fall.”

Laughing like crazy at Yuuri’s hugging rampage, but also some cooing.

“It’s funny seeing Yuuri wearing a mask, since this was made pre-pandemic.”

She laughs at Yurio’s little raging, but thought him comforting Yuuri was adorable. And the Katsudon pirosky!

She was relieved that Makkachin lived.

“In real life that dog would be jumping on them.”

She got worried when Yuuri asked Viktor to coach him until he retired, saying “but what if he wants to skate again?” OH HONEY. Can’t decide if I should remind her Yuuri wanted this to be his last season…

“THERE WE GO!!” when Makka leans in on the hug.

Overall really positive reactions to this one! Snarly loved the skating, and the new characters and relationship development are so strong.

She had pretty much the exact same reactions to the Crispinos and Yurio’s development and to JJ that I did when I first watched the series, so I figure she’ll enjoy seeing how the latter develop further in Barcelona.

I’m so excited for her to watch the next episode—since the power imbalance about Viktor being Yuuri’s coach is the main thing she dislikes about their relationship, I’m hoping the episode ten reveal will change her mind.

i know no one cares but i feel like talking about how i write vocaloid fics, specifically the characterization and names (names especially in the case of "in this house, everyone is valid, except kaito")

this probably isn’t complete but whatever

miku is typically very bubbly and cheerful and cutesy and she loves to sing. (exceptions to this are rational time and coin locker baby, because kaito ruins everything. also delete delete delete but idk if that like, counts, bc it's in the context of her being a computer program rather than a person)

rin is the older twin and she never lets len forget it. she's a typical class clown who loves messing with and teasing her brother and her friends, she tends to be really crude and loud, but she's still very protective of len (only SHE can call him a loser). she has definitely used the phrase "dank memes." she's much more softspoken in rational time due to trauma bullshit, and her brother is the most important person in her life.

len's a little shy, and he's only ever really brash when he's talking to rin. he's very protective of her as well despite being basically a noodle. he's not very social at all until miku, being the pure angel she is, helps him make more friends. that's the only reason he ever really grows more friendly. he's a bitch sometimes though and has a habit of doing really stupid things (usually miku and/or rin are involved)

luka is always just the essence of kindness and calmness...she tries to be mature and stoic to maintain her mysterious demeanor but she's also a lesbian and if anyone flirts with her she turns into a beet red stuttering mess...tbh i don't write about her as much as i should

meiko is the oldest and the most responsible. she's the number one mom friend. she got great grades in school and her teachers from high school still adore her. she's also a recovering alcoholic. and she's super hot and gets a lot of spice, or whatever. (she's a prostitute in rational time, and a manipulative bitch in coin locker baby. in every other scenario she's just fucking hot.)

kaito fucking SUCKS. he ranges from mildly annoying (his only friends are meiko and gackpo and even that sort of varies?) to absolutely repulsive. if you like kaito, don't read my fics bc i Really Fucking Hate Him and u will be sad

gumi is a very anxious disaster but somehow a lot of girls get crushes on her anyway??? she has low self esteem, but thanks to her gf miku it's been improving. she's very sweet to everyone once she gets the guts to talk to them, and she hates confrontation bc it's super stressful. also,,,, she does that thing with the commas,,,,,,,, her last name is yamane bc i thought it fit neat with the other [japanese word]ne surnames, i didnt use her voice provider's last name bc then i'd feel like i was writing about her voice provider and not her. yknow?

i've only really written gackpo three times, and two of them are antagonistic roles bc i couldn't use kaito (and one of those were scrapped, and the other is pretty minor) but otherwise he's very mature and elegant and doesn't know what's hip. he's kinda like yuezheng longya from hatsune miku vs. the world except he doesn't talk like he lives in the world's biggest thesaurus.

lily is another "all the girls want her" type. she's very mature and calm, and easily seduces girls. she kind of likes watching them swoon over her. although certain things really push her buttons and make her scream and cuss and probably beat someone up. her last name is masuda bc her voice provider is named yuri masuda and not lily masuda so It's Allowed

cul is a tsundere who's nice to a select few people (gumi, miku, and lily included) but otherwise is pissed off 24/7 (especially at her cousin, fukase, and ritsu). she’s actually a disaster lesbian and she can barely speak if lily seduces her. arms sweaty knees heavy situation. her last name is kitamura for same reasons as lily

i’ve said this before but i like to think of mayu as an idol singer who has a yandere alter ego she uses for her music, she’s actually very sweet and considerate and she gets nervous about scaring people by accident. since her name is a shortened version of mayumi, i guess i could use morinaga without it being weird, but i feel like it’s still kind of a gumi/megumi situation so i like to think of her full name as “mayu mori” instead, since “mori” could be the shortened form of “morinaga”

iroha is a girl who’s silly half the time and serious the other half, she’s pretty moody but not necessarily a tsundere. she looks up to miku and rin a lot and in addition to Really liking hello kitty she also really like anime catgirls and whenever her friends talk about catgirls she’s like “ah yes, my area of expertise,”

flower is definitely a butch lesbian, and she gets bullied a lot for that + her anxiety, and the reason she has such a cold exterior is to defend herself against it. when she speaks she’s very straightforward about everything and so sometimes she unintentionally comes off as rude. flower also has an unnamed voice provider so i take “miwa” from her v4 illustrator (miwasiba) and use that, though as of right now i’ve only written about her once so yknow

fukase is an immature, annoying loser who’s really only liked by miku (who likes everyone except kaito) and len (his boyfriend). he’s cul’s cousin but he acts like an annoying little brother to her and she hates his guts. he makes the most sex jokes. the only time he’s really a likable human being is toward len. i didn’t take his last name from his voice providers first name because it still feels a little weird (like the yumemi nemu/nemu yumemi situation) so i made it sugimoto. i don’t remember why

Bookshelf Briefs 3/7/20

Ao Haru Ride, Vol. 9 | By Io Sakisaka | VIZ Media – Ao Haru Ride is probably the most straight-up dramatic shoujo that I am reading at the moment, and though it relies largely on story beats that would usually annoy me—like misunderstandings and poor communication—I still really enjoy it. Kou and Futaba have feelings for each other, but Kou’s misguided decision to reject Futaba in favor of hanging out with a sad former classmate kept them apart. Now, Futaba believes Kou and said classmate are a couple, so she’s trying to move on with Kikuchi, a very nice boy whom she’s trying her best to fall for. I love that Kou’s actions have consequences and also that we see their friends discussing the situation and deciding that they can’t fix things for him; this time he has to be the one to act. I also note that Kikuchi is especially likable for a romantic rival, which is kind of rare. Recommened! – Michelle Smith

Given, Vol. 1 | By Natsuki Kizu | SuBLime – Ritsuka Uenohara got so good at playing the guitar that he started to find it boring. Mafuyu joins Uenohara’s band as their new singer—the other members are two college guys who seem poised to have a love story of their own—and they’re quickly gearing up for their first live show. Meanwhile, Uenohara’s confused about just how he feels about Mafuyu. Given already has a lot to love: the band dynamics, the relationship between the two leads, the mystery of Mafuyu’s past… I’m eager for more! – Michelle Smith

Komi Can’t Commmunicate, Vol. 5 | By Tomohito Oda | VIZ Media – Komi Can’t Communicate is a very charming series with likable characters. (The exception, of course, is Yamai, who continues to be thoroughly gross.) In this volume, the gang patronizes a run-down restaurant whose proprietors think Komi is a famous reviewer, meets a couple of new characters (Komi is up to 13 friends now!), and plans/executes a maid café for the cultural festival. What I really like is that though there are many comedic moments, Komi continues to make genuine progress in overcoming her communication difficulties. Her mom is shocked and happy to see her talking on the phone, she’s able to say something when out shopping with the two new characters, and she even manages a brief solo dance with Tadano before Najimi turns it into a group thing. This series is sixteen volumes and counting so far and I am definitely here for the long haul. – Michelle Smith

A Man and His Cat, Vol. 1 | By Umi Sakurai | Square Enix – A flat-faced exotic shorthair keeps getting passed over at the pet store until a kind older gentleman arrives to take him home. Through a series of short chapters, they get to know each other. The human (Kanda) names the kitty Fukumaru, and it soon becomes apparent that he has lost his beloved wife, who had spoken of the possibility of getting a cat when their children were grown. This is an extremely sweet series about two beings who need each other, with dashes of humor provided by typical cat behaviors. I laughed out loud at a particularly evocative panel depicting what happens when Kanda removes an offending cover from Fukumaru’s litter box. I also appreciated seeing the pair through the eyes of Kanda’s long-time friend, who hasn’t seen him smile this much in ages. I’m looking forward to volume two! – Michelle Smith

My Androgynous Boyfriend, Vol. 1 | By Tamekou | Seven Seas – There’s a certain type of advertising line that goes “come for the _________, stay for the _________,” and I definitely feel that this works with My Androgynous Boyfriend. The androgyny is definitely a strong part of the title, such as needing to hide Meguru’s relationship with Wako to avoid fan rage, and pairing him up with another pretty boy model, Kira (which goes south fast when both disagree with the idea). But mostly I loved the simple loving relationship between Wako and Meguru, which is strong, sexy, and not something I was expecting in this sort of series. Wako also gets a lot to do, as well as some of the best lines. It’s a series where I come away going “is the next volume out already?” – Sean Gaffney

My Hero Academia: Smash!!, Vol. 3 | By Hirofumi Neda and Kohei Horikoshi | VIZ Media – Smash!! continues to be pretty fun, though there seemed to be an inordinate amount of Mineta in this particular volume. True, much of that consists of the girls orchestrating his punishment for being such a total creep, which I guess is better than it could’ve been. Story-wise, volume three takes readers through the League of Villains’ attack on the training camp, but there are many diversions prior to that, including summer vacation hijinks, rescue drills, Halloween, etc. What I like best are things I’d never had reason to think of before, like Tokoyami’s inability to perform CPR, or just completely absurd visuals like Todoroki being depicted in a poodle costume or Aizawa playing the victim in a rescue scenario. I don’t know how much reread potential this series has, but… well, “pretty fun” about sums it up. – Michelle Smith

Otherworldly Izakaya Nobu, Vol. 6 | By Natsuya Semikawa and Virginia Nitouhei | Udon Entertainment – This is still, for the most part, a lighthearted series about people enjoying delicious pub food, but there is an ominous undercurrent to the whole thing that implies that the conservative forces are starting to rally against the izakaya as being a den of witches and that things may not be bright and sunny for long. Till then, there’s omelettes, and Hamburg Steak, and any number of tasty food that the customers, even if they may be reluctant at first, come to love. The question is whether that love of food can enter the hearts of the Church, which is very much in a “everything progressive and non-traditional must go into the fire” frame of mind. – Sean Gaffney

Scarlet, Vol. 1 | By Chiri Yuino | Seven Seas – This proved to be a lot darker and less fanservice-filled than I expected given the cover… and yes, I know the cover shows a vampire and her (rather happy) victim. But the vampire’s not all that happy, and in the end this is a book about the horrors of drug addiction, albeit one coached in the language of fairy tales and legends. Fine is a tragic vampire who wants to be human again, and Iris Redblood gets to be Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf at the same time. Together, they do indeed fight crime, but they don’t always win the day—sometimes the cute little girl ends up dying. And yes, there’s more than a tinge of yuri to this, which is why I suspect folks here will pick it up. It’s pretty good, but not sure if I need more of it. – Sean Gaffney

Takane & Hana, Vol. 13 | By Yuki Shiwasu | Viz Media – Another unbalanced volume, this is definitely front-loaded, with the first half having some of the best material in the entire series, as Takane and Hana open up to each other in a private moment (that turns out to be a little less than private) and admit their feelings. The second half shows them trying to negotiate this thing they now have, going on a date (well, more of an endurance hike), and a trip to Okinawa, where they run into another annoying little problem—they still have to hide things, so she’s the “kid sister,” which irritates Takane no end. And, well, there’s also the problem if Hana lacking a certain sense of shame—fortunately Takane has it for her. The first half, though? Magnificent. – Sean Gaffney

Tales of Wedding Rings, Vol. 8 | By Maybe | Yen Press – I enjoy the art and characters, but the series does love its one plot, which is “make it look like sex will be happening any day now but never actually have it occur.” Yes, they figure out a way to get out of the “bone or die” space without actually boning, and are able to move on with the fantasy part of the plot. Which actually involves the somewhat unwieldy party splitting up, so the next book should at least try to move away from will-they-or-won’t-they? a bit. In the meantime, this is another one where there’s no real conflict between the girls (as opposed to the previous generation of ring bearers). Even Saphir, seemingly the one who cares the least, is more a jerk with a heart of gold. Getting sort of trying. – Sean Gaffney

Umma’s Table | By Yeon-sik Hong | Drawn and Quarterly – Having greatly appreciated Uncomfortably Happily, I was excited that Drawn and Quarterly would be releasing another of Hong’s manhwa in translation, Umma’s Table. The narrative follows a cartoonist named Madang and his struggle to balance (and to some extent keep separate) his life as a new parent and his life as a caregiver for his ailing mother and father. Although shadowed by his father’s alcoholism and the lasting impact it has on multiple generations, some of Madang’s happiest and most nostalgic memories are those of family meals and his mother’s food. Overall, Umma’s Table is a bittersweet, wrenching work, but it’s not without moments of hope as Madang reflects on the complexities and parallels of his experiences both as a father and as a son. While not as explicitly autobiographical as Uncomfortably Happily, elements from Hong’s life are present in Umma’s Table as well, providing a sense of visceral honesty. – Ash Brown
