I was only trying to upload my copy of Fleetwood Macâs Greatest Hits collection to my iPhone. But somehow, I uploaded my entire music library.
Fuck it. It can all be there. Shuffle is gonna get really weird really fast. My music library is a weird, eclectic thing thatâs been evolving for over 20 years so yeah⊠About to have at least 50 nostalgic flashbacks and at least 10 traumatic ones.

"i agree." it's spoken softly and makes her chest fill even deeper with a void, it was surreal to hear someone talk about being faithful being the bare minimum like he put it. marcus spoke how it was the bare minimum and her doe eyed gaze simply couldn't help but ogle at him like he was the most rare thing she ever laid eyes on, it was so alien to her she had to question if she just made it up inside her head. the comment about prince was the thing that finally broke her out of that trance. "i like his hair, too." smile returning to her lips, a tiny happy laugh sounding from her at his comment as she placed the album over on her nightstand. "since it's getting lateââ i'll save prince lessons for another day." if she's lucky to have another moment with him. "for now this night owl will go to sleep and pretend we're driving somewhere fun and listening to his music together." voice sounding happy at the idea, she hopes she really can have a dream like that.
small frame still sat up next to the dark haired boy however, giving him time to explain first and intent on listening. "i understand that." she immediately recognized what he was saying, elena almost interrupted his words as a sweetness wrapped around her heart that she could remind someone of that and how he could do the same. "you're in art, too. in all of my favorite songs..." ...in the songs she writes, the songs she sings. he's there. and both of them, collaborating in artâ just two different types but still all the same whether it was musical or art by canvas. unearthing art, was a lot like how he was trying to unearth her honest feelings towards him. the fact put a guilty smile on her face as elena silently thought about it to herself how she definitely understood what he was saying now. "i really like bonding over someone with art." it was implied towards him as the smile on her face became sweeter.
"sorry, i'm just the sleep bandit." she quipped, then felt amused at how sleep was taking over him so suddenly while she was still wide awake as usual. and the sleepiness on his face is really cute. "hey, don't use hello kitty like that." elena feigned offense when she saw him use it under his head, reaching in the floor for one of the pink silky pillows that had fallen off her bed then leaning back up and giving marcus it by sitting it on top of his torso. she was pulled down to lay with him, but pushed herself back up so they could fully get ready for bed. she'd return to that position in a moment. elena grabbed for the blanket he was laying on top of rather than under, grunting at trying to pull it from OUT underneath him to no avail. "move off of it and get under the blanket, you big dinosaur." amusement filled her voice with her instructions as she gently pushed on his hip, her biceps burning from all the strength skinny arms were putting into it. the unexpected question that came up next had no reason to make her heart quicken until the last part. because she knew how many nights with rory did make her scared. elena rolls onto her side, sliding her legs under her blanket and curly haired girl rests her hands under her cheek in a praying position after stuffing a purple care bear between them while her forehead nuzzles against his shoulder. "i do now." she reassures, smiling softly. "thank you, marcus." speaking quietly but sincereley, that means a lot to her, knowing he's been looking after her without him even realizing it for awhile now. not just then. thinking to those nights she had ran away from rory to marcus because she was scared.
"faithfulness should be the bare minimum, elena," he contends, gaze concentrated, searching for something that he wasn't even sure of himself. nothing about her relationship made sense to him. she was clearly unsatisfied; flinched at every touch, evasive, always tense, and of course marcus' presence in her life was indication enough. but now he pretty much had a confirmation that she was getting cheated on. it surprised him that she was with someone like that, but he tried to remind himself that he was kept in the dark about that area of her life. yet, the one thought he kept coming back to was a rather innocuous comment elena had made earlier in the night; the admission that he 'wasn't a nice person'. immediately, a pessimist by nature, marcus' mind went to the absolute worst. it made him physically sick to think about the possibilities. above anything else, he needed to know that she was safe. but, even with everything considered, marcus knew better than to ask her a direct question about this. elena's brain would likely short-circuit if she couldn't answer one of his questions with a riddle.
he knew who prince was, of course, but he didn't have the slightest inkling of the songs she was pointing out. "i like his hair," comments casually, wearing a smirk as he eyed the album cover. tries to present a cursory air, but he was mostly just anxious. the more they sunk their teeth into each other tonight, the harder it would all be when the morning came. in his mind, all that elena would have to say was that her mind had changed, but he knew not to hold his breath. "a lot of art reminds me of you, but not for the reasons you might think. it's not like there's one piece that's you, in my mind, if that makes sense..." trails off, trying to make his words count before he sets them free. "like, for example, i'll see a painting and see your smile, or an expression you give me. sometimes i can just see something and just have a feeling that it's you.   ....   i don't know, it's my job to unearth meaning in art, and you're on my mind a lot,  so it all might be bias." eyes were trained on her ceiling as he spoke, confession flowing from his lips like water from a broken faucet. maybe he would've felt more self conscious in his vulnerability, but he's already reached bedrock in the hole he'd dug himself in tonight. "yeah, i'm a regular bandit," he's unenthusiastic in tone, caught up in all of the confusion of her mixed signs. understanding elena was similar to walking through an ever-changing maze, and marcus was helpless in an endless pursuit of the right path to take. stuffed animal that was pushed into his chest is immediately moved to underneath his head, giving his arm a much-needed rest from holding his head up. "yeah, if you let me sleep," he mutters, unable to stop his smile. the notion of going to sleep scared him, but marcus knew the reality was inescapable. "oh, it's definitely not boring," he interjects, "it's just... in a different league." his eyes become unbelievably heavy, feeling the haze of exhaustion finally sweeping over him. marcus pulls her close because it feels like the right thing to do, and he's instantly comforted when their breathing becomes synchronized. a nagging thought finally overtakes his rationale, and he speaks through their silence. "elena?" waits for her response: a mumble, a hum, anything, before he continues. "you would call me if you needed me, right? if you needed a ride, if you were in trouble, ....if you were scared?" room is quiet enough that it feels like the question might have echoed, and the words feel heavy enough that could've splat on her carpet. again, he can feel his heart set off.

Finding you awake late at night
anon asked: JJK big three finding us awake bc of insomnia I have been suffering the last few months and i need some good old comfort
Characters: Fushiguro Megumi, Itadori Yuji, Kugasaki Nobara
authors.note: Yay I'm back and it feels great! thank you all for waiting patiently for me I swear I'll make it up to you guys. Love ya <3
TW INSOMNIA
MEGUMI rarely sleeps 8 hours straight. He always ends up listening to music in his dorm room, calm lofi beats to lull him back to sleep. He thinks about tip-toeing to your room every single night with no exception, but he always convinces himself not to. After all, he shouldnât disturb your beauty sleep. And on a rainy Saturday night, when he found you sitting cross legged on the common roomâs couch, songs from the playlist he had made for you softly floating through the empty room, he decided to come looking for you and your warmth on the nights he couldn't shut off his brain. Silently rounding the couch he places his hand on your head tracing a line down to your chin tipping upwards before placing a soft kiss on your lips. You werenât even spooked by his sudden appearance, just glad you had some company on this lonely night. You ended up cuddling up on the couch, wearing matching hoodies and being wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket while silently listening to the rain hitting the windows. No words shared, only a whispered I love you when the other falls asleep.
YUJI sleeps like a log. Loud snoring and getting tangled in the freshly washed sheets. He rarely wakes up in the middle of the night and when he does it's usually because he is hungry. Naturally he tredges to the kitchen ready to rampage through the pantry, Sukuna appearing on his cheek to chastise him for waking up, when he runs into you clad in your pajamas and fuzzy pink socks -the same pink as his hair- perched on the kitchen isle as a soft piano tune wafted through the air. You had a cookie in your mouth, the last one in the jar apparently, and a look of utter confusion in your eyes. âI wanted to eat that.â His voice is raspy and laced with sleep, eyes drooping close as he dragged his feet in front of you, plopping his head on your shoulder and nuzzling into your crook. âMph sorryâ You laced your fingers through his hair, scratching lightly at the roots when suddenly he leaps up chomping on your remaining cookie, leaving you stunned. âSugary delight mhm.â and with that he wraps his arms around your waist, lifting you up and throwing you over his shoulder, taking you to his room. At least youâll have company during this sleepless night.
NOBARA is scary when she wakes up. Itâs always one of the two: a) she needs to pee or b) her phone went off. She is grumpy and huffing about something under her breath, taking off her eye mask and trudging to the bathroom only to come face to face with a wide awake you, wearing a full face of makeup, your smokey eye a little too intense making you look like a little raccoon caught committing a crime. And Nobara laughs. She laughs with her whole heart, tears gathering up in her eyes threatening to spill on her avocado face mask that has cracked at this point. She kneels down in front of you, still laughing hysterically, cupping your cheeks and kissing the pout off your face, giggling into the kiss and rubbing her nose on yours as she pulls away. âYou little raccoon bandit.â You pout again, crossing your arms over your chest. âThis is art, babe, doubt youâd understand.â She laughs again, poking your sides and pecking your nose. A comfortable silence falls over you, her eyes shining under the weak bathroom light making you lose yourself in the pools of chestnut. âGet out, I need to pee.â

2020 was a troubling and disturbing year. I created a lot of music and experienced a lot of nights waking at 5am in a panic. I deeply missed the sacred experience of being able to see live music. In its absence of that I listened to a lot of music. It was difficult to whittle down this list but here are a lot of albums I enjoyed in 2020, in no particular order.

With all live performances canceled, this was truly the year of demo videos and home studio recording for me. These are 10 pieces of gear that came out in 2020 that helped keep me feeling creative and inspired during lockdown. In no particular order:
EHX Oceans 12 Dual Stereo Reverb - The Oceans 12 ticks all the boxes for what Iâm looking for in a great soundscaping reverb. I used the Shimmer and Reverse algorithms in conjunction a lot when I was composing music for a film score.
Chase Bliss Audio Blooper - While I donât actually own a Blooper, I had the pleasure of borrowing one from Mike of Baranik Guitars after NAMM this year. He made an incredible Blooper-inspired guitar and I was completely charmed by them both. Chase Bliss always delivers pedals that push me creatively and the Blooper truly hits the mark.
Cooper FX Arcades - I love everything Cooper FX has released to-date so the opportunity to access those sounds in one pedal via plug-in cartridges is just awesome.
SolidGoldFX NU-33 - I was asked to do a demo of this pedal for its release and ended up being really charmed by this boxâs approach to lo-fi nostalgia. Iâve used it a lot for film scoring and highly recommend adding it to your collection.
Demedash Effects T-120 DLX V2 - I LOVE a good tape echo and the T-120 Deluxe V2 ranks up there with the best Iâve tried. This pedal made its way to me this Christmas and I look forward to making some beautiful sounds with it in the new year.
Hologram Electronics Microcosm - The Microcosm is one of those pedals where you should fully read the manual before diving in but once you put in that initial effort youâve got a massively powerful tool on your hands. It does glitch like no other. Definitely worth the homework
Azzam Bells MP019 - I discovered this unique instrument through a post on Reverbâs IG page and immediately looked it up and ordered one. These experimental percussion instruments are hand-made in Italy and theyâre as beautiful visually as they are sonically. I used it for bowed cymbal and daxophone sounds on a film score and it was absolutely haunting.
Echopark Dual Harmonic Boost 2 - I love the control you have over dialing in the perfect amount of grit with these dual boost circuits. I use it a lot as a textural tool when Iâm laying down drones or bringing in big distorted swells. Itâs one of the most versatile overdrives in my collection and I love that.
Fender Parallel Universe Series Volume II Maverick Dorado - I was smitten with the Maverick Dorado when I first saw it at NAMM. It has a lot of the specs that I look for in a guitar and the body shape with the Mystic Pine finish just blew me away. I hope that I get to use it live soon.
Polyeffects Beebo - The Beebo is one of those pedals that I genuinely feel is smarter than I am. Itâs like an entire computer in one small touchscreen box. I canât claim to have mastered using it yet but the sounds that I have managed to get out of it so far have been brilliant. Iâm looking forward to spending more time with this box in 2021

HELM 2020 REVIEW
Let's get the bad stuff out the way first, 2020 was undoubtedly an awful year. I'm still not sure how to really respond to seeing a global pandemic bring the capital to its knees and everything I love and hold dear to a grinding halt. Our government fucked it's response, putting profit before people and killing tens of thousands. The Labour Party descended into farce with the newly elected leader Sir Keith revealing himself as a bland centrist with no opposition or ideas. On a personal level it sucked not being able to travel or see my friends in different parts of the world - or even the same country - who I am starting to miss a lot. However, I was fortunate enough to get through the year with my sanity intact. Music, art and culture once again being my main positive. I think I listened to more music than I have in any year ever. I read more books than I have done since I was a teenager probably. I also re-discovered the joys of walking long distances and am extremely thankful for living near a lot of incredible green spaces: Epping Forest, Walthamstow Wetlands, Walthamstow Marshes, Wanstead Park, Wanstead Flats...
Music. My favourite albums of the year.

A shout-out to Jon Abby's AMPLIFY series on Bandcamp / Facebook, which I contributed a new piece of music to.
A shout out to the labels where most of the music I listened to seemed to come from:
The Trilogy Tapes Iron Bonehead Penultimate Press Dais La Vida Es Un Mus
Gigs. Despite live music being destroyed in 2020 I still saw a few unforgettable performances at the beginning of the year.
Graham Lambkin @ The ICA, London Puce Mary / JFK @ The Glove That Fits, London Demilich @ Finnfest, The Garage, London Container / PC World / National Unrest @ Venue MOT, London S.H.I.T / Asid / Chubby & The Gang @ Static Shock Festival, ExFed, London
Books I enjoyed. Most not published this year, but all read in 2020.
Joe Kennedy - Authentocrats David Balzer - Curationism Tom Mills - BBC: The Myth Of A Public Service Simon Morris - Consumer Guide: Special Edition Luke Turner - Out Of The Woods Various - Bad News For Labour Mike Wendling - Alt-Right Baited Area issues 1 & 2.
Film. Three good films I saw this year which I hadn't before.
Suspiria (Remake) Midsommar Cannibal Holocaust
Podcasts. I listened to a lot of these whilst walking.
We Don't Talk About The Weather Novara Media Tysky Sour & Novara FM Grounded with Louis Theroux System of Systems Red Scare loveline episodes Suite 212 NOISEXTRA Social Discipline CONTAIN
TV.
Didn't watch a huge amount and what I did was mostly trash. For some reason I rewatched both series' of This Life, a British drama from the late 90's about a group of young professionals house sharing and navigating their careers. Very cringey and has aged terribly, but it was perversely fascinating to revisit something from that time in the age of the pandemic. Following on from this I binge watched the entire series of Industry which was entertaining enough. A programme about a bunch of horny bankers with what felt like a confused ideology behind it. It seemed stuck between trying to criticise and glorify the culture around the industry, but also protect the industry itself from outside criticism by portraying anyone who may oppose as an insufferable wanker. Currently halfway through Succession which is OK. The Murdoch documentaries on the BBC were excellent and a rare respite from their descent into client journalism.
Thanks to anyone who listened to my music this year also. Best wishes to you all for 2021.

1. My Nr. 1 lesson: patience. Whether it's bouncing through 30 seconds of severe turbulence at 39000 feet or slogging through 30 minutes of a interminable piece of concert music, one attribute I've tried to develop is the ability to see past the discrete and awaited ending, the exact framing of the immediate process, but put it into the context of a larger time frame. I've found that this year more than all others has demanded it. Breathing helps...
2. Books: revisiting old favorites from the realm of Thomas Pynchon and Philip K. Dick (both especially relevant), digging into John Lomax's portrait of Jelly Roll Morton, the works of Colson Whitehead, random things off of the shelfâŠ
3. Composing: with touring off the table, I focused on that which needed to be written, some requested and commissioned, some spontaneously springing forth. Composing requires that one open the windows wide to the world, which at this moment brought in grief, terror, uncertainty, anxiety, visions of plague and pestilence and incipient fascism. Okay, now shut the window and get to work! How to process, translate, transform? The work can be a comfortable and obsessive cocoon once one learns to handle the radioactive materials and put them into the creativity reactor.
4. Beans! We have long been a fan in our house of the wide world of legumes but this year brought two stars to the front: the black bean and the red lentil. The black bean commands the lofty peaks but the seemingly infinite variations of dal surround it. Ginger, garlic, turmeric, smoked paprika, cayenne, onions, and olive oil form the basis then imagination builds.
5. Online teaching substituted for my canceled conduction of workshops in the Pyrenees Mountains of France. Between the participants and myself, we built a temporary but very congenial space online to share concepts and music. In addition, private lessons brought conversation and music with new friends in Germany, Italy, California, Australia, Illinois, Denmark, Pennsylvania, Spain, Florida, Brazil.
6. What started out as "stress baking" (before I even had heard of the term) soon became a frequent practice that yielded very edible results. The twins preferred the sweeter forays into banana bread and chocolate cake. I tried to find a balance between tried-and-true techniques and experiments in texture and taste with yeasted pumpernickels, multi-grains, and seed breads.
7. While not the same as performing 'live ', online gigs proved that it was possible to generate a surprising amount of adrenaline even without the pheromonal handshaking of a room filled with receptive ears. As a corollary, online recording collaborations with friends worldwide proved to be inspiring and a suitable substrate for sonic experimentation, exploration of new instruments, tunings, effects programming, structures. In these realms, shout-outs to Helene Breschand, Mike Cooper, Henry Kaiser, Tracie Morris, Mikel Banks, Dougie Bowne, Payton McDonald, Billy Martin, Colin Stetson, Jim O'Rourke, Scott Amendola, Roberto Zorzi, Jason Hoopes, Eric Mingus, Melanie Dyer, Dave Hofstra, Don McKenzie, Sergio Sorrentino, Veniero Rizzardi, Taylor Ho Bynum, Scott Fields, Bachir Attar, Karl Bruckmaier, Robbie Lee, Matthew Evan Taylor, Matteo Liberatore, Al Kaatz, David Barratt, Jessica Hallock, Kolin Zeinikov, Robbie Lee, Jeremy Nesse, James Ilgenfritz, Sergio Armaroli, Steve Piccolo, Sandy Ewen, David Weinstein, Jim Whittemore, Chris Vine, Werner Puntigam, William Schimmel.

Ten Things That Didnât Happen in 2020
1. I didnât write a ton of new music. Donât get me wrong, I wrote some. I always do. But mostly I focused on my new YouTube channel, essays, and on getting old recordings released. I havenât even been working a day-job so I thought I was going to write my next Ring Cycle, but I really didnât find Covid inspiring.
2. Trump wasnât re-elected. Cool.
3. I didnât lose anyone to Covid. I am, of course, profoundly grateful for this. But I feel pretty embarrassed remembering group-texting ten friends in March, âWe are all going to see a loved one die. Every single one of us. Donât kid yourselvesâ. I can get hysterical, and that was somewhat irresponsible of me.
4. No revolution happened. I donât mean to be smug or cynical, or to belittle anyoneâs participation in the protests. But, as far as I can tell, nothing happened in 2020 that promises to reduce police brutality or human suffering of any kind. Weâll see. That burning Minneapolis police station was exciting to watch at the time, if only on an aesthetic level.
5. I have a stack of unread books I bought this year, just staring at me, with nary a crease among them. These include:
Adorno and Horkheimer, The Dialectic of Enlightenment (looks amazing, but I havenât touched it) Marx, Grundrisse (itâs 1000 pages for fuckâs sake. Amazon also accidentally sent me two copies, and its double presence in the stack is just comical) Reza Negarestani, Intelligence and Spirit (the first 15 pages blew my mind, then my mind blew it off)
6. I didnât settle into living in LA. I moved here six months before Covid and I was just starting to cultivate some friendships and play shows. This was quashed and I still feel like I still live in New York. I still barely know the layout of the city here.
7. No brand-new buzzy musical artists burst onto the scene, that I can recall. No new hyped micro-genre of the moment. There was just no way for there to be a hot new trend. Iâd say that was refreshing, but it wasnât.
8. Tysonâs return was not awesome. Two minute rounds, ended in a draw. Iâve been getting way into boxing this past year. This fight was a bummer. Iâm looking forward to Mayweather vs Logan Paul (LOL) because we know itâs comedy ahead of time.
9. For three weeks in July, I didnât do a single thing other than watch street fight compilations on YouTube and Worldstar. Thatâs just grim.
10. There were no school shootings in March. Apparently, this was the first March with no school shootings since 2002. Not a single 7th grader got a hand job in March either. I cannot begin to imagine what itâs like to be a kid now.

Work 2020
Despite Covid 19 lots of things actually did happen.
In Feburary I visited the only active nuclear plant in The Nederlands as part of my "Expanded Field Recordingâ project together with SML. In March revisited the Acousmonium at the Elevate Festival in Graz with an additional trip deep inside the Schlossberg recording old mining trains. In March and April I did two daily recording projects âPending and Auditory Scenesâ - both of Amsterdam during lockdown. In May did my first Zoom field recording workshop with the CAMP project. In June & July  two research trips in Waldviertel, Austria with Franz Pomassl. In August recorded bells and organs in 10 different churches around Amsterdam for Jacob Lekkerkerker. In September recorded Kali Malone at the Orgelpark in Amsterdam. Performed at Heart of Noise Festival in Innsbruck and A4 in Bratislava. Also went ice-skating for first time in 20? Years. In November and December I travelled to Jeju island to record field recordings for a project by Femke Herregraven for the Gwangju Biennale, commissioned for 2021. Did lots of gardening, released two tapes âCall it Philips, Eindovenâ and âZomer 2020â with Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson. NOW! Looking forward to 2021.

âIf you laugh one time, two of your worries will disappear, little cub.â
My father squishes my face between my hands as I sniffle, and I look up at his face. There is no handsomer man in all of Doma or Hingashi or Garlemald, I tell myself. None of them have his pretty ocean eyes or the lines that crinkle around them when he smiles, or his dimples, and he smiles so often that they seem like theyâre always on display. His hands are big and calloused from hard work, and his shoulders are broad and strong, and I like him much better than any soft prince my mama has told me stories about.
Baba is more like a warrior, I think. A strong warrior from a simple background that people could look up to. And, as he comforts little me because Iâd cried over seeing a dead mouse that Hui the cat killed, I let myself sink into his words and into his safe arms.
âIs it really true?â I ask around another sniffle, and my father smiles again, nodding at me.
âThere are many cures in this world, but your baba has found only a few that really work like nothing else.â
Shifting, he holds a hand up, ticking a finger down for each cure he lists.
âSalt, in the form of sweat or tears or seawater, and then laughter, even if nothing is funny. If you can find something to giggle over, your worries melt away. It fixes hearts. Donât cry, my sweet baby. Itâs not happy, but Hui the cat is just doing as kitties do. Do you know why he brought the mouse to you?â
I shake my head, and my father tweaks my nose gently between his fingers.
âHe wants to make sure you eat, silly! You never bring around dead mice, and so he figures you must be a very terrible hunter. Since youâre his favorite person, he must take good care of you! He didnât want to make you sad, Xiu-Xiu. Heâs just worried about your hunting skills.â
Something about Hui the cat critiquing my hunting skills makes me hiccup a giggle, and my fatherâs sunny smile grows, feeding off of it. Leaning forward, he tickles at my tummy until my peals of laughter fill the courtyard, and then he swings me up in the air to spin me around, like I was a bird in the sky.
Just like that, so quickly, so easily, my worries that, to my four year old brain - the mouse and the lack of paints to decorate my rocks that I had been talking about beforehand - were desperately important fade away. They fade into the laughter, into the joy that jolts through my body, and I feel okay again. Baba was right. But of course, heâs always right. No man is smarter than him, either, except maybe Hui the boy, but heâs just that - a little boy.
And itâs the same boy - my big brother - that I call out to as our father sails me back into our apartments in the inn, still above his head. Our mother clicks her tongue and warns him to be careful as the scent of her most famous dumplings reach my little nose, and I squeal, gently kicking my legs until Iâm set back to my feet. I zip through the kitchen, weaving around my mother, who reprimands me that the stove is hot and to be careful. At the table, Hui is diligently taking peas from their pods.
He was always good at those chores. I was only good at them when I was able to sneak most of the peas into my mouth rather than let them get gathered and cooked.
âLittle cub, go and wash your paws,â my mother chides me, gently. âNo dirt beneath your fingernails before dinner. And that goes for your father, too. Go on!â
Giggling, I hug her around her soft tummy, and she smiles, kissing the top of my head. I scrub my hands and nails carefully next to my father, who places a pile of soap on my cheek and makes me squeal again. Mama calls for us to come back to the table, and I flop onto my cushion - itâs the pretty pale yellow one - beside Hui, looking up at my long suffering older brother with big eyes.
âPea?â I ask, and he smiles as I lean my head back, tossing one of the tiny vegetables into my mouth. A cry of victory rings out between us both as tiny me is able to catch it, even though he had thrown gently and close to be certain I would not miss.
âI painted lots more rocks today,â I tell the family proudly, and my hand is patted before I remember mama needs to offer thanks to the kami. Clapping my hands together, I bow my head and listen to her brief prayer before crying out my enthusiasm and agreement, to the softer chorus of my brother and father.
âI painted lots of rocks,â I continue, âand the guests inâ in room three really liked them so I gave them my tiger one and then I gave Bao the chicken the rockâ the rock I made that is a flower because she likes eating mamaâs flowers so I thought maybe she would like my rock flower, too. Itâs in the hen house!â
âDo you think Bao will share her rock flower with the other chickens?â Mama asks, and I nod sagely as she leans over, putting rice in a small bowl beside me while baba makes sure Hui isnât taking less food so that I can eat more.
âWe have enough, son,â I hear him murmur gently, and my big brother hesitates. Heâs been worried ever since a doctor told my parents I might grow up tiny since sometimes we donât have lots to eat, but I know itâs not true.
âYou gotta eat lots, Hui!â I chirp, kicking my legs and my dirty little feet lightly beneath the table. âDonât worry! Iâm gonna beâ Iâm gonna be taller than baba! Iâm gonna be as tall and strong as the biggest tree in the forest!â
The words make Hui smile, and I grin, remembering what our father had said.
Laughing once can make two worries disappear.
âAnd then you can live on my shoulders âcause theyâll be like my branches and use my hair as a blanket to keep warm because itâs thick andââ
Hui starts to giggle as my mother lightly and affectionately boops me on the nose.
âIf I had half your energy,â she says with a faint smile, but Iâm satisfied. Hui laughed and that meant it would help him not worry. Heâs the bestest big brother who always takes care of me, and he needs to be happy, always.
âThatâs our little ray of sunshine and our breaking dawn,â baba says with a smile, glancing between me and Hui. âWe love you, kids. Now eat up so we can play music for our guests after weâre all done!â
The promise of music is enough to get me to start stuffing my face. Our parents had the prettiest voices and our guests always loved to listen. They like my dancing, too, and I like how shy and happy Hui gets when heâs praised for how he plays the koto. They always tell our parents that weâre pretty or cute or handsome, in Huiâs case, and it makes mama and baba look so proud. They even let me play my little erhu, even though Iâm just small and still learning, but mama says Iâm doing a good job and that I get better each day.
Blissful days, in our strange, chaotic inn that seemed to possess no layout that made any sense. The ghosts, too, liked when we played music. They liked when I left them origami or rocks that I painted, especially the ones that used to be parents or other little kids. One ghost lady told me that someday, I would marry a prince, after I brought her a gift, and I frowned.
âThat doesnât sound any good, though,â I told her. âBeing a princess would mean I have to follow lots of rules and I donât want to follow all those kinds of rules. Are you sure itâs not a... a bandit! Or maybe a pirate, or musicianââ
The old ghost lady chuckled at me and shook her head.
âMaybe he will be a rapscallion after all,â she relented, a glint of amusement in her eyes, and I didnât know what that meant but I liked it so I peppered it into conversation every day for a week before I learned a new fun word to use.
âPompous.â
Princes would be pompous. No. It simply wouldnât do. I wanted to marry an adventurer or maybe a nice farmer like baba was, and I sang all about it to our guests that night after dinner, and they laughed and they looked happy.
I hope, if they had any worries, that all the laughter would make them forget at least two.

Listening to some old DDR music and I nearly had a heart attack when I heard the first notes of Paranoia.
Felt like a sleeper agent and someone said my trigger word.

âWriter Asksâ
Tagged by @kitty-bandit and @silentium-nightshade (thank you! <3)
1. Explain your AO3 handle. TheFairieQueen comes from a nickname I got back in my freshman year of college.  I used to do more studio art growing up, and always did butterflies and fairies (it got somewhat spurned on even more, because my grandmother always talked to me about fairies growing up).  And itâs no secret I like fairy tales - Iâve always been into them, and I just sort of got a reputation in college for liking these things early on?  Between that and the way I dressed, one of my friends thought I was just fairie-like, and she always called me the fairie queen.  So it came from there. XD  (In addition to that, when I talk to my grandmother even today, she refers to my apartment as my âfairy hollow.â) 2. Favorite fanfiction trope? AAAAAA.  This is hard?  I like so many? XD  Definite slow burn buildup and that pining for each other - Iâm weak for that, as well as disastrous first meetings when it comes to romance.  (In addition to that, any trope that forced two romantic interests together - like dangerous scenarios, sharing a bed, etc.). 3. Favorite place to write? Easily at home.  Itâs just more comfortable to be in my own space, and I usually end up focusing best if Iâm cozy in bed or curled up on the couch, always with a cup of tea and dim lighting. ;3 4. Favorite ships in your current fandom? Right now, D.Gray-Man is my main one (I donât know if Iâll ever leave?), and hands down, Yulma is my OTP.  I think anyone who follows me or talks to me is pretty aware of that. XD  I also have a rare pair Iâm super into, which is Tyki x Alma, though @kitty-bandit got me very hard into Lavi x Link as well (and now....Lavi x Alma is on my mind? psjkfjsflkjsd)  But!  I also really love Lucky, LenaLavi, and Laven.  And Anita x Mahoja. <3 5. What are your steps to get into the Writing Moodâą? Usually getting comfortable is the main priority, since that helps with focus.  I always have a cup of tea, keep the lighting dim, and will usually be under a layer of blankets.  Sometimes, Iâll listen to instrumental music for inspiration and to set the mood for a scene Iâm writing as well. 6. What program/app do you use to write? Microsoft Word. 7. List your zodiac sign, favorite ice cream flavor, Hogwarts House, and your opinion on pineapple pizza. Taurus/WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO CHOOSE?  Honestly it switches, but I love mint chocolate chip/Ravenclaw/Nonononono PLEASE NO PINEAPPLE ON MY PIZZA. 8. Link us a fanfic that made you cry. Itâs hard for me to full on cry, but A Matter of Time by @kitty-bandit just....fuck.  Fuck.  I donât even have words for the level of pain this put my heart through.  It just...UGH IT JUST FUCKING HURT, OKAY? ;__; 9. Link us a fanfic that made you laugh. Iâm going to have to say A Rough Patch by @errantknightess - like that was so damn amusing I nearly lost my shit on my bus commute home. XD 10. Link us a fanfic that left you in complete awe at the writerâs ability. This is hard considering damn near everyone I know is so talented, but @izadreamerâs Dreaming of Flowers will always be up there.  Like holy shit, everything Iza writes is amazing, but that fic is just a whole new level of insane talent (also Labyrinths of the Heart for any Tangled fans - Iâm so behind in this fic, but fuck, itâs amazing too). 11. List your kinks. Oh god, SO. Time to out myself.  A/B/O Dynamics; Dom/Sub dynamics; Anything involving lingerie or tightlacing; Shower sex; Lightheadedness; Teasing; Some BDSM (consensual shit tho); Consensual Voyeurism (if in an established relationship); Mpeg (I lowkey hate myself for admitting this); Sucking/Biting. 12. How do you come up with your ideas? Honestly, they just...come?  Usually with new AUs and story ideas I donât exactly look for them actively; they more or less hit me.  Once I have a base idea or line of inspiration, I usually will just follow it by jotting down notes, researching anything that ties into said idea, and just..really letting my mind run.  Sometimes you just almost canât even overthink it, or you might accidentally constrict yourself, you know? 13. How do you implement said ideas into a cohesive narrative? Know the ending.  I swearing, knowing the ending and figuring out the storyâs end point is huge.  It really helps in understanding what you ultimately want to accomplish with your stories, and what you want your characters to go through development-wise.  14. What are your working on right now? Share a little snippet or a description. Right now, I just finished up the remaining chapters of Encompassed in Glass for NanoWrimo, but am now moving on to a Nutcracker AU (title TBD).  The main ship with be Yulma (surprise there Iâm sure XD), but itâs something I would like to start posting sometime December.  As of now, the prologue is written, and Iâve started chapter one.  (Draft excerpt from chapter one below!)
A snowball had hit her promptly on the shoulder, exploding into a mass of powdery snowflakes. The impact had been surprisingly hard, causing Emilia to trip into a pile of freshly-shoveled snow, and for a moment she struggled to get back up. Alma winced, when he saw how hard he had actually hit Emilia with the snowball.  âOops, that was harder than I thoughtâŠâ He murmured, hoping Emilia wouldnât come for him next.  He turned to Timothy, and whispered.  âGo, go, go!â Timothy, who was snickering loudly at Emiliaâs plight, quickly got up and dashed out of the alley, laughing full force when Emilia caught sight of him, glaring threateningly.  Then she turned, and her mouth dropped when she caught sight of Alma peeking out from the alley way. âYou were helping him!?â She exclaimed.  âAlma, you traitor-!â Alma smiled sheepishly, before giving a small wave.  âSorry, got to go!â He said, before running back down the alley.  While he usually never would have left someone who had fallen down, he knew it was for the best; friends or not, Emilia was sure to let him have it once she got a hold of him, and Alma was determined to escape that fate for as long as possible.
