Mashin Sentai Kiramagers: Who is it? It's Kiramai Killer!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A seventh Kiramager appears before the team, but proves himself to be an antagonistic warrior using a very dangerous prototype who merely wants to see himself as the team's arch-rival!

since seeing the boonboom suits with those sick ass jackets i have had the mighty urge to give other suits the same treatment, using their civilian jackets/uniforms, to see if they'd look just as cool

okay before that actually gets people i’ll explain. it’s more accurate to say “Ohkuwagata Ohger is the Stacaesar of Kingohger”
since Kyuranger - though it’s much more noticeable since Zenkaiger - we’ve had an almost consistent toyline trend of a ‘dark’ version of a retail transformation device, usually the original one, at premium bandai and usually around the first third of the show that results in an extra ‘dark’ ranger in that show. Hebitsukai Metal, Gaisorg, Dark Kiramai Silver/Yodonna, Stacaesar, Don Murasame, and now Ohkuwagata Ohger.
It’s obviously been a bit fluid in what it actually results in but recently it’s flattened out into a more standard ‘dark counterpart of the Red Ranger’ (which you can also take to mean as Don Murasame being the most normal thing about Donbrothers). Recently the trend has also involved a dark version of the main mech existing somewhere and having some kind of release, which we’ve also seen is the case in the last couple episodes. We technically don’t have a toy listing for the Ohgercalibur ZERO yet but another strange little thing about this trend is that it takes a while for them to actually sell the damn thing that’s been on screens for weeks

oh yeah speaking of kids anime yuri witch duos i just checked in on what tsubota fumis doing. anyway the tokusatsu to bl pipeline is asbolutely SPOUTING because the shinsengumi BL shes the screenwriter on is the main guy from revice, the guy from revice people were saying his agent did something to get him more screentime, the hot one from geats, inubrother, kiramai silver, and then i'd have to click 'see more' to see the rest of the cast.

The ToQger crossover was leagues better than the Go-Onger crossover. Genba’s obsession to defeat Disrace paralleled Akira’s desire to find his place to die so damn well! And getting Right actually fighting alongside the Boonboomgers was the best, especially the line-changing into Mio and Hikari’s colors! Why we couldn’t have that with Sosuke will be something I will nitpick forever.
Speaking of Akira, Boonboomger is doing a very poor job of convincing me Sakito and Byun D are trying to be a separate group from the core Boonboomger team. It’s an issue that I feel Sentai does seldomly very well in recent years, in establishing the extra heroes as separate entities from the core team. Either they immediately become a member of the team (Shinken Gold, Gokai Silver, Zyuoh the World), or they spend two or three episodes beefing with the core team before joining for real, then a later episode (around the 38 to 42 mark) actually has them join for real for real. In the case of Akira, he established himself as a separate party from the ToQgers and maintained that distance from them very easily, even coming into conflict with them due to a promise he made with Schwartz. And when he returned, it really felt like he joined for real.
Comparing that to Sakito, who unfortunately falls into the group of sixths who kinda… exist, a la Kiramai Silver, LuPat X, Don Dragoku/Torabolt. They all have really interesting backstories that are either not explored much, or they don’t matter in the long run. We haven’t really had many scenes where Sakito gets to be a cleaner, and he’s just there as the Boonboomger’s sixth. He’s beefing with Genba because… they’re both technically extraterrestrials(?).
Some examples of this kind of dynamic that Sentai has done well are with Shurikenger, Twokaiser, and Starninger. Zox and his family never identified themselves as Zenkaigers, despite being on friendly terms with them, and Kinji was introduced explicitly as a separate party from the Igasaki clan before being induced as an apprentice. Shurikenger especially worked well, due to his gimmick of borrowing faces and appearances. He was more of a shadow mentor to both the Hurricanegers and Gouraigers, and didn’t consider himself a member of the team until Lady Gozen was killed.
Sakito feels like missed potential, similar to Noel from LuPat. The show couldn’t really keep X from staying neutral, and ended up making him a permanent member of the thieves despite his main selling point. Hell, he even took the Siren Striker away from the Patrangers.
If you’re enjoying Boonboomger, all the power to you.

A bit of a follow-up on my tokusatsu/BL crossover question. I don’t mean to fixate on this but once I spot a person or two I get curious. Plus I think I just enjoy seeing actors do really disparate things and this odd combination of genres really piques my interest in that way. And I’ve always been obsessed with spotting actors in different roles and so forth, it’s kind of a tradition in my family.
I started looking up filmographies for the cast of A Man Who Defies the World of BL season 2 on a whim while watching the BtS episode. It is FULL of Super Sentai and Kamen Rider actors, especially the former. Of course, AMWDtWoBL isn’t really BL itself, but I still think it’s notable. Many were also in the first season of AMWDtWoBL.
Some examples:
- Atsuhiro Inukai, who plays Mob, played Kamen Rider Build on the show of the same name (and seemingly some additional alter-ego type people?)
- Ito Asahi, who plays Mob’s love interest Kikuchi, was also Lupin Red on Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger
- Shiono Akihisa, who plays Toujou (Mob’s little brother’s boyfriend), was Kyoryu Green in Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger
- Shouji Kohei, Mob’s amnesiac hospital roommate, played Kiramai Silver in Mashin Sentai Kiramager (side note, his boyfriend on the show was played by Tsubone Yuto, aka Shirota from Utsukushii Kare)
- Eiji Togashi, who plays Minami (the third part of a love triangle with Mob’s brother and his bf, who then starts flirting with Mob), played Ren on Kamen Rider Saber (spotted him without having to google!)
I noticed at least 2-3 other tokusatsu actors in small roles. It probably helps that the premise of this show means Mob witnesses tons of stories involving main characters in his capacity as a side character, leading to an unusually big cast.
I checked management companies for some of these actors. There was no obvious unifying theme. Of course, there could be a management company factor that just isn’t as obvious as “they’re all managed by the same group.”
Not sure if you'll have an opinion on this, but I'm curious. I keep noticing a lot of casting connections between Japanese BL and another Japanese media genre I watch, and in particular one franchise. And I can't tell if it's A Thing or not. Maybe I'm just seeing it because I happen to watch both of these genres (maybe if I was into some other genre I'd see the same kind of overlap?), or for a mundane reason (e.g. maybe shows from both genres recruit actors of a certain sort/level of success?). It seems like more than a coincidence. But if it's not a coincidence, why would this happen?
The genre I'm talking about is tokusatsu shows. My family and I got into kaiju movies, then into Ultraman shows, and through that into other tokusatsu stuff. Around the same time, I got into Kdramas and eventually branched out to stuff from other parts of Asia and into BL. The franchise that most of the tokusatsu overlap happens with is Kamen Rider.
My sample size is small as I'm a recent convert to BLs, which is a weakness for this tentative argument, but I really think this might be noteworthy...maybe? Here's what I've got so far (noting years because the time range is interesting):
Senpai, This Can't Be Love! is full of Kamen Rider alums. I knew both leads (from Saber, 2020, and Ex-Aid, 2016) and their boss (from Ryuki, 2002), then heard from others on here that two other minor characters were on KR shows I haven't seen yet. This is the most extreme example by far and may be skewing my perception.
I knew Takeda Kouhei of Old Fashion Cupcake from Kamen Rider Kiva (2008), where his character is the polar opposite of Nozue (overconfident, flamboyant, girl-crazy). But then I found out he was a regular on Kamen Rider Build (2017) as well.
Less clear-cut and in the opposite direction, Nishijima Hidetoshi was in What Did You Eat Yesterday? (just heard about this quasi-BL from one of your posts) before being the lead in Kamen Rider Black Sun this year. He was also just in Shin Ultraman, the only overlap between Ultraman and the BL world I've noted so far.
At this point anyone reading this is probably picturing me like that meme of a wild-eyed Charlie Day in front of his conspiracy-theory wall collage. But I keep wondering. Is there someone in a studio role responsible for BL who's a huge Kamen Rider fan? A veteran casting director from Toei making a leap to a studio that produces BLs? Or maybe I just have a case of apophenia (unfounded pattern-finding).
Wondering if you might have some insight.
My guess is that it's actually agency stables in play. Talent agencies and casting directors get in each others pockets a lot. So often you'll see cross over actors, sets of actors, like the casting director fielded the agency's team.
Usually this is because the casting director notified the agency of the roles available and the agency also looked into all the sides, extras, etc and basically blanketed the couch with possibilities from thier stable.
So for example, Takara & Amagi are both played by Jpop idols, but while they're form different groups, they share the same talent agency.
To My Star stars Son Woo Hyun & Kim Kang Min are from the same agency and were also both in The Golden Spoon and Tale of the Nine-Tailed.
If you watch Kdramas as well as KBL you'll start to see this a lot with the sides and extras. I think Japan operates similarly. Something like Absolute BL fielded a ton of familiar faces and I think quite a few of them were from the same agency.
If casting has a good working relationship going with an agency, they can just ring them up from set to send someone over real quick if there has been a drop out or a sudden need for an extra. It's a kind of laziness but also the result of long relationships and industry networking. Also actors will travel in packs and get pulled in just because they're hanging around set while their friend is shooting, and they're often friendly because they share an agency.
I wouldn't be surprised if a number of the better KBL lead pairs turn out to be from the same talent agency and to have at least socially known each other before filming. I've never cared enough to look into it, but I would take an educated guess at 50% or so.
It's all about networking in ET.
