When Was the First Kingdom of the Wilderwest Built? (HTTYD Books)
Hello, my fellow Dragonmarkers! It's been awhile! As promised, here's the article concerning the plausible timeline of the Kingdom of the Wilderwest. This article was actually a very old one of mine that I had written during this month in 2018. Why didn't I post it on here? Because I wasn't on Tumblr until 2020. And by then, I had forgotten to post this on here. Whoops. Teehee. 😜
When did Hiccup the First end the First Human-Dragon War and built the First Kingdom of the Wilderwest?
Many fans just go with what Wodensfang says in Book 11, supporting the 1000-Year Dynasty mentioned in Book 11 rather than the 500-700-Year Dynasty suggested in Book 9. In fact, it's everywhere in the HTTYD Wiki. I guess it's because fans view Book 11 to be more accurate because it's a later book? I don't know; maybe I'm thinking too hard about this.
But I want to talk through this and thoroughly go through the pros and cons of both sides of the argument and do this right. I'd love to know what you guys think about this.
Anyway, on to the topic!
Possible Contradiction?:
In the First Book — the Book that we're all familiar with — in Chapter 6, Page 68, says that:
"The Dragon (speaking of the Green Death) had crawled down into the depths of the ocean and had gone into a Sleep Coma. Dragons can stay in this suspended state for eternity, half-dead, half-alive, buried under fathom after fathom of icy-cold seawater. Not a muscle of this particular Dragon had moved for six or seven centuries."
Wodensfang's account of Hiccup the First in Book 9 "How to Steal a Dragon's Sword", on Chapter 12, Page 203, seems to probably confirm this when he says: "Five or six centuries ago, when I was young, it was a very dark age, and the dragons and humans were at war."
He goes on further explanation in Page 208 concerning the Green Death: "...Merciless flew to the north, and to the Open Sea. He lived so long a loner that perhaps over the centuries he forgot his youth as leader of a dragon army and became quite an ordinary killer. Rumor was that several hundred years later, he was known only as the Green Death, one of the many monsters that terrorize the Deep Sea."
So you're probably saying, "Great! There it is! There's your answer! It was 600-700 years ago! Problem solved, right?"
Wrong.
In Book 11 "How to Betray a Dragon's Hero", on Chapter 6, Page 98, Wodensfang tells the story of how the Dragonmark came to be, as well as a more detailed history of the Kingdom of the Wilderwest and the story of Grimbeard the Ghastly as a boy, and how he changed the Mark.
He says at the beginning of the story: "Once upon a time, Hiccup, a thousand or so years ago, when I was young and about the size of a Saber-Toothed Driver Dragon, I met your ancestor, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the First, and I gave him the Dragon Jewel and trusted him with the Jewel's Secret."
In Page 100, Wodensfang repeats this by saying: "For over a thousand years, it seemed like I had made the right decision to entrust the Secret of the Dragon Jewel to the humans."
I know right? I'm as confused as you are! Didn't he say in Book 9 that it was "five or six centuries ago"? Maybe even SEVEN centuries ago? Why the change? Did he suddenly get the Dragon equivalent of memory loss due to old age? Does he not know how to count?
Here's the confusing thing: if he was rounding, this might explain it. But the thing is that you can do it with small numbers, but as the number gets bigger, you can't round up in great jumps.
(Warning: Math Ahead!)
For example, say that the number is 8, you round it up to 10 (in certain circumstances) because 8 is closer to 10 than 5. However, if it's 6, then you have to round down to 5 because 6 is closer to 5. The only time that it doesn't is when you're rounding up in percentages (55.678594375 would be 56, for example).
You can't round up to 1000 years from 600, or even 700. That's too high of a jump. Especially when you're telling a historical account. For one thing, it's inaccurate, and for another, it's lazy. And it'll spread lots of confusion.

A Roman Piece to a Nordic Puzzle | The Hint's in the Roman Numerals:
So then, which is it? Was the Kingdom of the Wilderwest built 600-700 years ago or 1000-odd years ago?
First off, allow me to redirect your attention once more to the references concerning the Green Death (also known as Merciless):
The Green Death Takes His Tea by Crownflame on DeviantArt
<><><><><><>
"The Dragon (speaking of the Green Death) had crawled down into the depths of the ocean and had gone into a Sleep Coma. Dragons can stay in this suspended state for eternity, half-dead, half-alive, buried under fathom after fathom of icy-cold seawater. Not a muscle of this particular Dragon had moved for six or seven centuries."
And this one:
". . .Merciless flew to the north, and to the Open Sea. He lived so long a loner that perhaps over the centuries he forgot his youth as leader of a dragon army and became quite an ordinary killer. Rumor was that several hundred years later, he was known only as the Green Death, one of the many monsters that terrorize the Deep Sea."
According to these two quotes concerning the Dragon Merciless, it would appear that the events were about roughly 600 years ago. The problem is that the first quote says he had been in a Sleep Coma for six or seven centuries. I don't know about you, but that doesn't seem like a lot of time to me for him to have forgotten his past and about his nemesis Hiccup. It sounds like in the latter quote, Merciless lived and journeyed alone for a long time — about 100-200 years or more — before he fell into a Sleep Coma.
What might help support this is the mention of what he had eaten in Book 1, Page 129: "He was awake now, and he had coughed up the last thing he had eaten, the Eagle Standard of the Eighth Legion, with its pathetic ribbons still flying bravely."
Now, yes, the HTTYD books are exaggeratory and any historical references are "purely coincidental," and that the Roman Dragonrustlers were about during Hiccup the Third's time (but after Book 3 was said to have fled back to Rome — which is inaccurate because Hiccup's time was during the Viking Age, over 300 years after the fall of the Roman Empire. However, I have a theory that'll explain that in the future).
But what if we DID get historical here? According to history, the only 8th Legion in Roman history was the Legio VIII Augusta, one of the oldest Roman legions in Rome's history (along with the Legio VI Feratta, Legio VII Claudia, and the (in)famous Legio IX Hispana). They were stationed in Gaul (modern France) near the modern-day Strasbourg area (called Argentoratum in Roman times). It was founded in 65 BC by Julius Caesar during the Gaul Wars. It continued service presumedly until either before or until the Fall of Rome (400-500 AD).
Of course, since it continued service until that time period, then it's impossible for the Green Death to have eaten the Legion, right?
As Old Wrinkly used to say: "It's not im-POSSIBLE, only im-PROBABLE. The only thing that limits us are the limits to our imaginations."
So, taking this sagely advice, let's think about this carefully.
According to Roman history, the Eighth Legion was disbanded during the first of Rome's Civil Wars (called Caesar's Civil War and the conflict was between Caesar and Scipio) soon after the Battle and Siege of Thapsus (modern-day Tunisia) in 46 BC for unknown reasons. It was reconstituted in 44 BC by Caesar's adopted son Augustus for Caesar's veterans who had loyally served him and helped him defeat Mark Antony and gain power as Rome's first Emperor.
So basically, there's a two-year gap between the disbandment and the reinstation of the Eighth Legion, which means that Merciless could've easily have eaten the Legion during that time and nobody would've been the wiser, and when Augustus reinstated the Legion two years later, he filled the ranks with other veterans who had served Caesar and Augustus.
What do you think? Plausible?

Possible Connection to Dragon-Aging and Dates in the Book of Dragons:
Now, in Book 1, in the back of the How to Train Your Dragon book that Hiccup reads (similar to the Book of Dragons in the film) in Chapter 4 on Page 53-58, it says that the last stamped due-date was on "16 May 866 AD". The first and second due-dates stamped on there before that were "10 June 789 AD" and "9 April 835 AD".
However, there's no mention of when that book was borrowed, or when it was returned, or the gap between the date and when Gobber the Belch had burgled it from the Meathead "Public" Library. The Hooligans seemed to have had the book for a while. So the current date of the time of Hiccup's first memoir could be anywhere from 866-900 AD — if not later!
Suffering Scallops, it could even be in the 1000s AD!!! In Book 7, Hiccup writes in his epilogue that: "Now I am an old, old man, and the world that I created has no need for dragons. They have retreated from the civilization that I brought, along with the wolves, and the Berserks, and the monsters of my childhood."
In 1015 AD, Berserkers were outlawed, and the practice of "going berserk" as a profession and the rituals involving their cults were forbidden until by the turn of the 12th century, Berserkers had all but disappeared from human history. The end of the Viking Age was considered to be between 1066-1100 AD, so, scallops, Hiccup could very well have lived during this time.
(This could explain the crossbows in the TV series, as they were beginning to show up around this time, as well as Hiccup's quote in the first film: "300 years and I'm the first Viking who wouldn't kill a dragon!")
And, in Book 12, Hiccup also explains in his epilogue that Sea-Dragons like Toothless can live for thousands of years, so maybe 1000-year period might be correct? There's no mention about the other sea dragons, apparently, so I guess they don't live nearly as long?
The problem is the period of growth in the Sea-Dragons. Wodensfang was probably of-age by the time he meets Hiccup the First, and he was "the size of a Saber-Toothed Driver Dragon" then. Then, as the decades and centuries went by and the Kingdom prospered, he grew to be "as large as a mountain". Then he says that hundreds of years ago, he began to "shrink in old age", as Sea-Dragons are small in young and old ages, but in adult stages they're colossal, until he shrunk to the "size of a large Viking hunting dog (probably a Norwegian Elkhound, which lived during this time and was used mainly as a guard and hunting dog)" during the time of Grimbeard the Ghastly. By Hiccup the Third's time a hundred years later, he shrunk to the size of Toothless.
Furious was still considered a baby during Hiccup the Second's time, but grew to be the size of a small elephant. Then 100 years later, he became the size of a mountain, when it doesn't seem that Wodensfang grew that big that quickly (though, to be fair, the Berserks had been feeding him well with human sacrifices for the past 100 years, among other foods, so he probably grew to be that big because of it.) He must've had an early growth spurt. lol 😂
That being said, the reason Furious and Wodensfang have different growing speeds may be likely due to Furious having been fed well since his hatchling days. Whereas it's hinted by Wodensfang himself that he's had a difficult life in his younger days, which is one of the reasons he joins Merciless' rebellion against the Vikings. So the struggle for food could've stunted his growth until he met Hiccup the First later on, at which point he grew faster as more food was available.
Meanwhile, there's Toothless, who's a baby, and has been the size of Wodensfang since the first book, and, according to Hiccup in his epilogue in Book 12, hasn't really grown up at all despite it being 62 years since the events of Book 12 (which if Hiccup was 10-11 when he got Toothless in Book 1, this would make Toothless 65-66 years old by Hiccup's death) and is still able to sleep on his chest.
He must be a late bloomer. lol 😂
Then there's the Green Death — or Merciless — to consider. While he was Furious's size during Hiccup the First's time, and was considered to be a young dragon, then several centuries later, if not more, when he meets Hiccup the Third, he's still the same size! Do Sleep Comas delay aging and growth or something?
So basically we have FOUR Sea-Dragons who grow and age at various speeds! So I don't think we can glean anything from this.
So . . . 1000 years or 600-700 years? Honestly, I seem to get more confused the further I try to explain it! I hope you're having better luck keeping up than I am at the moment! lol 😂
<><><><><><><>
Time For a Little More Math! (cue the groans!):
Okay, I'm going to do a little more math. To be honest, graphs, charts, and basic math is the only math I love. If you don't like it, then skip if you'd like, though you'll miss out on the cool part. 😉🧐
I've done the calculations and I'll do my best with it. If there are any mistakes, please let me know and I'll correct them.
I'll be using current time from 866-1100 AD and then add the date to when the Kingdom of the Wilderwest could've been established in Hiccup the First's time.
I will be using the terms CTP (Current Time Period) and DFP (Dynasty Foundation Period) to avoid confusion.
Whew! Okay! Now that THAT'S done and over with, let's get to the average ages of the Kings of the Wilderwest to further prove (hopefully) which date it might've been.
I've organized it into different sections. Before Hiccup the Third, there were 12 Kings of the Wilderwest. So I'll divide the number of years that the Dynasty could've lasted to the number of Kings to get the average lifespan that each of the Kings have to be in order for this to become plausible.
Now granted, some of these Kings could've died young (20s-30s), or very old, or in their middle-ages (pun not intended). This is the AVERAGE lifespan for each king -- not a literal statistic for each and every King.
Unless, of course, if we were fanciful people, we might've theorized that there's some sort of magic spell in the Dragon Jewel that Wodensfang didn't mention that causes all of the Twelve Kings to die at the same age.
In that case, if true, and if every King DOES INDEED die at the same age, then since Hiccup the Third dies at the age of 75/76, it would've been 900 years since the foundation of the Kingdom of the Wilderwest since every King would've died at the same age that Hiccup had died.
But we're not fanciful people . . . and that would be ridiculous. lol 😜
However, you're probably noticing that there are no 1000 Years among the statistics that I just showed above. That's because I had just remembered that the Kingdom of the Wilderwest collapsed a hundred years before Hiccup the Third's time. Meaning that if the Dynasty and Kingdom lasted for 1000 years, then only 900 years of that has passed as a kingdom.
<><><><><><><><>
Conclusion:
So . . . WHEW! That took a long time to write (5-6 hours, though the time could've been cut in half had I not done the statistics, but then where'd be the fun in that? lol 😜)
I apologize if any of this went over your head or overwhelmed you with informational overload. If it did, then I sympathize because I'm feeling this as well — and I'm WRITING THIS!
So my conclusion is that, basically speaking, regardless of the Kingdom being anywhere from 600-1000 years old, 100 of those years need to be subtracted since the Kingdom fell apart when Grimbeard dissolved it a hundred years prior to the current events of the Second Dragon War. So, realistically, the Kingdom — and the 12 Kings (including Grimbeard) — lasted around 500-900 years, and when Wodensfang tells Hiccup the Third about the history of the Wilderwest, he includes the 100 years into the timeframe when the Kingdom of the Wilderwest was first founded.
So I guess that, in the end, the actual date and timeline will be left up to the fans to headcanon for themselves.
If you could take anything from this, what would it be?
What current timeline do you think Hiccup the Third could be living in during the Viking Age? 900s? 1000s? 1100?
And how many years do you think that the Kingdom of the Wilderwest was established (including the 100-year gap)? 1000 years? 800? 700? 600?
Please share your thoughts! I'd LOVE to hear from you!!! ^_^
Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to read this and I am looking forward to reading any theories, corrections, suggestions, discussions, answers, and/or questions you may have.
I hope this article finds you well, and I hope you have a splendid weekend!
Long Live the Wilderwest!

Yah sure. I havent fully seen the movies but I have read the books.
And what if, Hiccup in the movies is Hiccup the first, abd the movies are in fact a prequel.
In the books, dragon training is a well established buisness. In the movies, they are fighting at first.
Hiccup befriends Toothless, in the movies, who can not speak to him, in contrast to Hiccup in the books who learned to speak deagoneese from a young age.
Book Hiccup the first, managed to create a golden age between humans and dragons that lasted a thousand years, the kingdom of the wilderwest.
I heard that movie Hiccup has managed to create a union between humans and dragons.
And it would be such a nice Au explanation, about why the circumstances are so diffrwnt, its a prequel
Toothless is a small, loyal, little pest of a dragon, and a night fury is a very fine hunting dragon that Hiccups mean cousion Snoutlot (whos the best at everything in class) had, which is kind of ironic.

👑 New Heroes Reborn Chapter!!! 👑
Last one before the next hiatus RIP
“What on earth are you doing in my dorm room?” “Dorm… room?” “And how are you talking!” “Well it’s a lot easier for me to find words in here.” “In my dorm room?” The dragon blinked a couple times. “No Silly, in you’re head.”
general fic desc under the cut:
Toothless is unsure of what to do with the rest of his very long life after Hiccup's passing. Centuries have passed, dragonkind has gone into hiding, the Kingdom of the Wilderwest is a crumbling ruin, and all that’s left of his glory days are the memories that he relives in his sleep. One night though, he is suddenly visited by a strange dream involving his former master’s afterlife, and It looks like Hiccup is trying for another chance in the realm of the living... Hamish Hermann is nervous about the coming school year. His new private boarding school in South Wales is sure to be a far cry from being homeschooled by his father. He expects he’ll be forced to face cliques and bullies, and having recently come out as trans isn't exactly bound to help his situation. What he isn't expecting is for a real life dragon to turn up and tell him that he is the reincarnation of some great Viking hero, and that he is needed for a very important quest. With their new friends; Finn, Cassie, and Willow, a mysterious girl with an eyepatch who knows an awful lot about the ancient grounds of the old school they attend; the group will dig up a long lost history, and hopefully save the world from imminent doom while they’re at it.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the armor, since as a King, he needs armor to protect him. That being said, you are correct that it shouldn't be HTTYD-film-inspired and should instead be chainmail made of dragon teeth, along with a dragonskin fire suit, along with his Roman shield, sword, etc. Maybe a nicer helmet. Like what @yv-sketches has made.
In all honesty, while Windwalker probably inspired film Toothless, in part, I agree that she shouldn't add film elements to her books, since what she had in her books was what gave them charm.
In fact, I'm even an advocate that the films should've been more loyal to the books instead of what we got. Don't get me wrong, the films were good (at least HTTYD 1), but they would've been better if they stuck to the Books, plot-wise and even added book characters like Camicazi, Thuggory, Old Wrinkly, Valhallarama instead of Valka, book Alvin instead of the Alvin that we got in the TV show, etc.
<><><>
Honestly, if Cressida Cowell is going to write new HTTYD books, it would be nice if she would dive into the stories of lesser-known characters. I mean, she's got a lot of characters that, in my opinion, should have their own spin-off series. Or at least a short story.
Here are just some possibilities:
How Stoick and Valhallarama met and his Quest for the Fire Stone (egg)
Old Wrinkly's past
Wodensfang's story on how he met Hiccup the First in more detail
A story on Hiccup the First and his journey as First King of the Wilderwest.
A series of short stories on Grimbeard's childhood and reign as the Last King of the Wilderwest.
A short story or a spin-off short series on Hiccup the Second.
A short story on the Succession Crisis and Grimbeard's Last Quest after the fall of the Wilderwest.
A short story on Chucklehead and how he ruled Berk
A short story on the Outcasts
A short story on Thuggory, or about the Meatheads in general
A short story on Camicazi and the Bog-Burglars after Book 3.
A short story on Termagant and Alvin
A short story on Alvin's Quest for the Lost Things and his reign as Chief of the Outcasts.
A story on Humungous Hotshot and his Quest to Woo Valhallarama and how he came to be a Slave on Lava-Lout Island
Short story on how Hiccup the Third was imprisoned in Danger-Brute Dungeon and how he escaped
Short story on Humungous Hotshot and Tantrum adventuring.
Short story on how Humungously Hotshot and Tantrum met.
Short story on what happened to UG the Uglithug after the events of Book 9.
Short story on Snotlout and how he came to have a rivalry with Hiccup.
Short story on how Fishlegs came to Berk and became friends with Hiccup.
Heck, do a short story about the Two Swords, Dragonsword and Stormblade and their history.
Do a short story about each of the Kings of the Wilderwest and a summary of their reigns, and just on the history of the Wilderwest Kingdom, in general.
Story about Valhallarama's Quest for the Lost Things
Short Story on how Gobber stole "How to Train Your Dragon" from the Meathead Library.
A short story on how Windwalker ended up captured by the Visithugs and found later by Hooligans.
A short story on how the Romans came into the Archipelago and built Fort Sinister.
A collection of short stories about various Heroes of the Archipelago, such as Hairy Longbottom, and other explorers and heroes who explored and conquered the Barbaric Archipelago.
A short story on Humungously Hotshot's exploits and Quests.
A short story that explains how Norbert the Nutjob survived the Doomfang and came back disguised like a Wanderer.
A short story on Bigjob, Norbert's father, and how he found the Land-That-Does-Not-Exist.
A short story on Flashburn and his men.
A short story on Madguts and Gumboil
A short story on Merciless/Green Death and his journey before hibernation.
A short story on Ziggerastica and his swarms before and after Book 3.
A short story on One Eye from Book 4.
But definitely, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, there needs to be a sequel or at least a series of short stories that narrate Hiccup the Third's reign as the 13th King of the Wilderwest!!!
Quite honestly, if Cressida Cowell isn't planning on writing any of these stories anytime soon, then I suppose I'll have to write fanfics for them myself and expand the HTTYD Books universe for her on my own time. 💪🏻😤
I might get hated for saying this, but to be 100% honest, I am not excited about the new series at all.
I am almost dreading it, for I fear that Cressida may be inserting movie features into the following books… which is really, really not good.
But I saw that illustration at the end of the new story… and I am afraid that is what is happening. (The book has not arrived yet, but I have seen photos of it many times)
Seeing book Hiccup wearing movie Hiccup’s armor and prosthetic was like a nightmare come to life to me.
I fear for my dear Hiccup, whom I deeply respect for his personality, and who has taught me almost everything I believe in in this world. I truly hope that Cressida will not go as far as to change him into someone like movie!Hiccup—whom he is not
And I believe— no, I have done analyses and I know— that old Hiccup intended for his memoirs to end there, at How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury, when he became King and ended the war. He circled it back to the beginning (“In my beginning is my end… There were dragons when I was a boy.”), and said that it was complete, that his own life and his role as narrator was complete, and he could rest now (in the sense that he would soon die: “When Toothless flies to me next time, it will be for the last time.”)
An entire sequel series (not just short stories) would, break a considerable amount of symbolism here, even possibly rendering some of the messages and themes in the books as no longer true— especially if it starts to take after the movies. The books and movies are so vastly different that, to me, it seems disrespectful to mix them together.
A sequel might damage the books. An attempt to mix httyd movie elements into it will almost definitely destroy it.
I can’t bear to see it happen.
These books, written by Cressida, and by Hiccup the Third, have shaped me so greatly and made me who I am today, and have been one of the brightest and steadiest lights in my life. If this, my haven, my mental home, becomes ruined, it will be like tearing my vital heart out of my chest.
I cannot and will not leave. But if the worst does happen, especially if Hiccup becomes out of character, then I will be ready to disregard any sequel as canon.
I did not say this earlier, partly because I secretly hoped that it wouldn’t be true, and partly because I did not want to upset those in the fandom who are being so joyful about all of it.
Unfortunately I really cannot share that attitude.
And I also glimpsed a few others, who might have been thinking along similar lines as I did.
Eventually I decided that someone had to speak up and address the issue floating huge in front of us. That is why I wrote this.
I do not want to upset or anger anyone. I just wanted more people in this fandom to realize and know this.

Hot coco and cuddles.
A HTTYD book series AU fanfiction.
On the lost island of tomorrow, that wasn’t so lost anymore, a storm was raging. The small village that had been built out of the ruins of Grimbeard The Ghastly’s kingdom was being battered by sheets of rain and howling wind, and inside a hut, laying in bed trying to sleep, was a little boy with a lot of skeleton tattoos.
The little boy (Who’s body wasn’t very little anymore) was tired, he was lonely, and he was scared.
He lay on his side, hugging his small plush dragon that his cousin had sewed for him to his chest. He was suckling the wooden pacifier his uncle had carved, trying to ignore the wind shrieking at him. A particularly savage gust rattled the hut. It sounded like a dragon’s roar and for a second Snotlout thought it was the Dragon Furious, back to get him. He let out a squeak that would have embarrassed him if had he been older, and ducked underneath his blankets. He buried his face in his plush and muttered to himself.
“I am a big boy, I am a strong big boy.”
He was Snotface Snotlout, heir to the throne of the Wilderwest, and he was a brave boy.
He was braver then the storm.
He waited until there was a lull in the wind, and then he threw back his covers and jumped out of bed. He ran out of his hut, pausing only to put on his boots, into the rain. He ran straight to Hiccup’s hut, clutching his dragon plush to his chest. The rain soaked through his shirt and ran down his face but he tried to shield the fuzzy little dragon from the worst of it.
He made it to Hiccup’s home and banged on the door hard.
“Hey! ‘Iccup! It’s me ‘Iccup, wake up!”
He lisped, hoping desperately that his younger cousin would hear him. Thankfully he did, and finally the door opened to reveal a very tired looking King Hiccup Horrendous Haddock |||.
His hair was plastered to one side of his face by his pillow and Snotlout would have laughed if he hadn’t been so cold and wet and little.
“Snotlout? What are you-? Oh buddy.”
Hiccup cut himself off when he saw the pacifier in Snotlout’s mouth and the rain splattered plush in his arms. If he had been physically able to he would have scooped the little boy up and carried him inside but unfortunately the boy king was quite a few feet shorter then his older cousin, and weighted about ninety pounds soaking wet. He quickly ushered Snotlout inside and shut the door.
“Kiddo you’re soaked, what are you doing in the rain?”
He sat the little boy by the fire and look off his dripping shirt and boots, covering him with a warm blanket. Snotlout gnawed on his pacifier for a second before mumbling a response around it.
“The storm was loud. Didn’t like it.”
His ordinarily deep, confident voice was light and lilting, unguarded.
He sounded young.
“Hey buddy, how old are you?”
Hiccup asked as he busied himself with finding a towel for Snotlout’s strawberry blonde mop of hair. Snotlout thought about for a second.
“Five.”
Hiccup paused in rubbing the little boy’s hair with the towel and blinked. Five was Snotlout’s youngest age, he rarely regressed that fair back unless he was really upset. Hiccup tried to look causal.
“Wow little star, that’s really little! Did something happen? Did you have a bad dream?”
Snotlout held out his dragon for Hiccup to dry and shook his head.
“No, wind scared me. Sounded like big roar.”
Hiccup’s heart melted and he tried hard not to show it. Snotlout got embarrassed when someone thought he was cute.
“Oh did it champ? Well, the storm can’t get you in here.”
He finished drying his cousin off and ruffled his newly fluffy hair.
“Do you want something nice to drink buddy? How about some hot coco?”
Snotlout looked up from his inspection of his plush and grinned around his pacifier.
“Yeah!”
He jumped up and hugged Hiccup tightly, crushing him to his chest.
Hiccup let out a quiet “Oof!” but quickly hugged the not-so-little boy back.
“Let’s get you some then bud, come on.”
Snotlout followed him to the small kitchen and promptly sat down on the floor to watch Hiccup make the coco.
He handed the first mug to Snotlout when it was finished.
“Careful, it’s hot! Do you want to sit by the fire or at the table?”
Snotlout took out his pacifier and put it on the floor. He took a small sip of coco and licked his lips thoughtfully.
He liked the cozy kitchen, even as a king his younger cousin preferred to live in a cozy small hut. But he was still a bit chilly.
“Fire, it’s warm!” He decided.
Hiccup laughed softly and helped Snotlout up off the floor.
“Alright little dragon, let’s go back to the fireplace.”
They sat together drinking their coco and watching the fire until Snotlout’s eyelids began to droop and he started to yawn.
Hiccup gently pulled his mug out of his hand and set it down on the hearth.
“Come on star, let’s get you to bed.”
Snotlout didn’t even protest, he was so tired.
Hiccup led him down to hall to his bedroom with one steadying hand on his back and another on his arm. He gently sat Snotlout on the bed and took his blanket off.
Snotlout swayed slightly, and rubbed at his eyes with a fist as Hiccup slipped a nightshirt over his head.
Toothless was sleeping on the other side of the bed so Hiccup had to wake him.
“Wha-wh-what’s the big idea?”
He grumbled, yawning and blowing smoke in Hiccup’s face.
“Stop that.” Hiccup whispered in dragonese.
“Snotlout is sleeping here tonight so you have to sleep on the foot of the bed.”
“What you sayin ‘Iccup?” Snotlout mummered.
He didn’t speak dragonese yet. Hiccup decided he would have to teach him.
“Never you mind little star, I’m just getting Toothless settled.”
Snotlout nodded and yawned.
“F-fine. But just because he’s cute like this. D-d-don’t tell him I said that!”
Toothless huffed and lay down at the foot of the bed.
“Thanks Toothless.”
Snotlout lay down as well and Hiccup tucked him in, placing his plush in his arms and laying down beside him. Toothless was already snoring softly, his little dragon body heating the room like a furnace.
Snotlout sighed contently and rested his head on Hiccup’s chest.
Hiccup’s heart melted again.
“Can I give you a kiss goodnight buddy?”
He whispered, scratching at the fuzzy stubble at Snotlout’s jaw.
Snotlout nodded and closed his eyes. He rarely excepted kisses, declaring them “Icky”, but he felt safe and warm and soft, and maybe a kiss could be okay, just once.
Hiccup brushed his hair back and kissed his forehead softly.
“I’m so proud of you for coming to me when you were scared. Goodnight little hero.”
Snotlout smiled around his pacifier.
“Goodnight ‘Iccup…”

Mericcup Headcanons
While they were dating, Merida became friends with Astrid and Ruffnut. While on Berk, Astrid helps train Merida in the art of Viking shield combat. When she graduate Hiccup gifts her with her very own shield he made with the DunBroch crest painted on it. She in the only foreigner to hold the title of "Shieldmaiden of Berk".
Through their marriage, and some adventures they had together in other lands, the Scottish Clans, Berk, various Viking Tribes, and other smaller kingdoms and lordships all unite to form The Kingdom of the Wilderwest.
The Kingdom's official symbol is a circle with a bear and a dragon (positioned similarly to that of the yin yang symbol) the bear is designed using the Norse art style while the dragon is designed using the Celtic art style.
While engaged to Merida, Hiccup had to struggle to win the approval of the other Scottish Lords (since he is a Viking after all). He had the hardest time with Young Macintosh, who would be very antagonistic toward him and would remind him constantly that "he would never bow to some scrawny savage from the north. Their relationship changed, however, during a winter fishing trip between King Fergus, his soon to be son-in-law, and the Lords' sons. When Young Macintosh fell through the ice, Hiccup used his Viking knowledge on frozen bodies of water to save his life, thus earning his respect.
Merida and Hiccup have friendly archery competitions together (that she almost always wins, of course). Hiccup uses a bow that Merida made for him as a birthday present. It's made of a darker wood that almost looks black that has a Toothless shaped head carved at each end.
While Hiccup still technically holds the title of "Chief of Berk", Astrid is appointed the actual leader back on Berk while he rules the Wilderwest (which really annoyed Snotlout).
Hiccup's Titles: Dragon King of the Wilderwest, Prince (later King) of DunBroch, Chief of Berk, The Great Ironfoot (given by the blacksmiths in his kingdom), Shadow Rider (by fear filled enemies), Dragon Master (by those in the Dragon Academy), Wee Lamb (by Merida whispering affectionately into his ear).
Merida's Titles: Bear Queen of the Wilderwest, Princess (later Queen) of DunBroch, Chieftess of Berk, The Great Eagle Eye (given by the archers in her kingdom), King Humbler (more on that later), Shieldmaiden of Berk, My Wildfire (by Hiccup whispering affectionately into her ear).
During a meeting with smaller kings and lords who wanted to join The Wilderwest, some commented to King Hiccup as to why a woman (Queen Merida) was at the negotiating table as if she had a say in these matters. Hiccup was about to lose his cool at the rude remarks made toward his love, until she placed a calming hand on his shoulder and spoke. She calmly challenged each offending king and lord to a very public archery contest to demonstrate their "male superiority". It goes down exactly how you think it goes down. With their "male pride" very publicly wounded, the negotiations continue with Merida present and her husband grinning from ear to ear. This earns her the title of "King Humbler".
While Hiccup gets along with his three brother-in-laws pretty well, Merida's relationship with her new cousin-in-law Snotlout goes as well as you think. It gets better, after he learned a snide remark toward her or Hiccup would earn him a black eye from her.
Hiccup, being the nerd boy that he is, puts a great emphasis on education in his kingdom. He feels that the more his subjects know the happier their lives will be. With the help of his mother-in-law Queen Elinor (whom he has a great relationship with) he helps establish schools and libraries throughout the kingdom. As a result, his subjects are some of the smartest people in the world.
When Hiccup and Merida have children, they entertain them with the stories of their various adventures, but in different ways. Merida would be a great oral story teller (something she inherits from her dad. While Hiccup would be the one to write them all down in book form with well drawn pictures and maps (similar to Bilbo Baggins).

Summary: Every midsummer, the Haddocks made their way across the Great North Sea, back to the Hidden World where they could meet their dragons again. But as kings and empires rose in the East, and news spread about the wonders of the Archipelago, men sought after beasts of fire made flesh, for fire was power.
The fate of the Archipelago now rests on one family.

Chapter 1, A Mariner’s Myth
Three hundred years ago, at the dawn of the Viking Age, there existed a group of people who called themselves the Westerners. These were the dreamers, the explorers, the peace-lovers, who spurned the traditional way of pillage and plunder. Among them were members from all walks of life — warriors and shieldmaids, poets and inventors; adventurers and settlers.
When the land grew weary from too many mouths to feed, and Chieftains began looking East towards the wealth and riches of Continental Europe… the Westerners looked in the other direction. Their gazes passed through waves and storms and Thor’s mighty wrath, and where others saw danger, they saw their hope. The Western Exodus, it was called — scores of longships departed from docks and beaches all over the land, laden with food and brave people, sailing towards a brighter future.
For several moons, all everyone talked about was the Western Exodus, and it seemed the West might hold salvation after all.
Then the first survivors drifted ashore. They came back, less than one for every hundred that had set out, on makeshift rafts salvaged from the blackened husks of once-proud longships. They came back weeping, crying, screaming; of billowing smoke, of eternal flame, of great winged beasts rivaling the fearsome Níðhöggr itself.
Death lies in the West, they said to anyone who would listen. Death lies in the West.
And so these words were repeated, passed down, and hammered into truth. Death lies in the West, proclaimed the great Sagas of old. Death lies in the West, declared the gigantic runestones dotting the land. Decades turned into centuries, and by now everyone knew: Death lies in the West.
So, for three centuries, the Norsemen fought among themselves, and with anyone else who seemed to have loot worth taking. They raided far and wide, across straits and channels, up prosperous rivers, striking fear and devastation into the heartlands of Europe.
And in three hundred years of raiding, they never again ventured West.
It was the Year of Our Lord, 1060, and King Cnut the Great ruled with an iron fist over the entirety of Northern Europe.
The squabbling petty kings of Ireland had bowed under his overwhelming force, as had the barbaric tribes of Sweden, where pagan cults and human sacrifices were still the norm.
With the Holy Roman Empire sitting strong on the southern front, and with his hand bound by alliances or vassalage over smaller, weaker neighbors, the King seemed to be at the zenith of his power. Yet, when seated alone in his chambers, the map of the known world spread out before him, he would time and again look to the northwest, past the string of miserable islands that dotted the Scottish shores, into the blank unknown.
And in those quiet moments without his courtiers bothering him with trivial matters, he let his mind drift to the old mariner’s myth he’d heard when he was but a young prince — legends of a whole new land, of islands uncountable in number; large and small, warm and cold, lush and bare… an endless chain of them dotting the waves like the Lord’s own treasure map, a vast Archipelago stretching across the Great North Sea.
It was called the ‘Wilderwest’, where the last remnants of the Westerners dwelled, isolated from the world.
The King was a practical man — a common trait for powerful rulers, who forged empires from ships and steel. As fascinated as he was by the myth of the Wilderwest, he sensibly restrained himself from throwing perfectly good ships and men to explore beyond the edges of the map. Instead, he focused his attention to domestic matters — he had three kingdoms to rule, after all.
But one day, a whaling longship ventured too far from the coast, and got sucked into a mighty storm. Most thought her lost, and proper prayers were offered to both the Lord and the old god Njord. Life went on like normal, and the King wasn’t even aware of the incident… until the ship pulled in at Trondheim, carrying a massive dying form sprawled across its deck.
It was not a whale, nor a kraken, nor even some mythical leviathan.
It was fire made flesh.
And fire was power.
From that day on, the King knew two things:
One, the Wilderwest existed.
Two, he needed to conquer it.
Author’s Note:
Yes, I wrote a prologue that kind of ties the HTTYD-verse into our own.
Cnut the Great was a Scandinavian/Viking King who ruled over the North Sea Empire (1016-1035), which consisted of Denmark, Norway, and England. This is purely an alternate timeline where he survived past 1035, and continued to consolidate power. I didn't research a whole lot into him, so if you're a history buff, I'm sorry for butchering historical accuracy!

““Fellow citizens of the Wilderwest,” said Hiccup. “We have a peace to build and a new city on Tomorrow, a great city, worthy of this new Kingdom of the Wilderwest. It will take time, but we will do it. Any dragon that wishes to live alongside us, as a citizen of the Wilderwest, as valued as any human, is very welcome. But those who want to return to the wild are absolutely free to do so,” said Hiccup, for many of these dragons had such strong attachments to their masters that they had no wish to leave, and indeed, it would be unkind to separate them from their human companions.” ━ How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury, Cressida Cowell
^^ THIS. This is why I cannot get over the ending of httyd 3. You wanna end the franchise in a way that honors the books? Then take this fucking page into account. The dragons were given a choice. They still had a leader, yes, but they also had choice. They could either go on, return to the wild, or stay with the humans they loved. This is why I’m calling bullshit on how they executed the ending. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the movie. Of course I will pay to see it at the cinema (whenever my broke country decides to bring it over here). But I’m not blind to the mistakes they made in the execution of this particular thing. Having all the dragons move to the hidden world, even if the threats were gone, even if the same message from the previous movies still shone in front of us bright as day: humans and dragons are stronger together, was just utterly unfair. Not just for the people of Berk, not just for the children of Berk who were born with dragons but would never get to ride one, not just for the gang’s children who will never understand why their parents keep looking over the sea and sometimes cry for apparently no reason.. but for the dragons too. Maybe I’m too emotionally charged from this piece (thor please read it), but this is something that’s been in my head for a month now. And if I can’t get over it, how are the Berkains ever gonna be okay with it?

Suffering as I Suffer You Part II. Read On: AO3
Summary: "Dragons are not tools for war," He says, but he doesn't meet her eyes.
"They will be."
Rating: T
Broken and bloodied, Hiccup is paraded through the burned ruins of his country.
He has seen dragon fire. He has felt dragon fire. But even dragon fire’s destruction cannot match the smoldering, man-made fires that consumed his kingdom.
From his position in the procession, he can see the remains of his people. They huddle by the edges of the road and in the tree-line like refugees of a war-torn land. Meeting their eyes, he can see their suffering. He tries to instill courage in them with his glances, but they only offer him a look of pity before lowering their eyes to the dirt.
Hobbled and trapped as he is, he can do nothing to inspire them. Perhaps, he thinks sadly, that is very reason Queen Hofferson has kept him alive.
Imprisoned by her, the breaking of his spirit can be made into a spectacle to break the spirit of his people. Had he been slain in battle, his Hooligans would have risen up in his honor, raising their swords in the futile defense of a dead man’s honor.
The wagon lurches, throwing Hiccup forward. Wrists bound behind his back, he is unable to catch himself and he hits the floor with a dull thud. His head rings and he can hear the laughter of the soldiers from above.
He can do nothing to nurse his ego or save his people.
xXx
Hauled from the wagon and thrown over the shoulder of a soldier, Hiccup feels more like a sack of grain than a prisoner of war.
To the surprise of his captors, he doesn’t fight. Instead, he takes in the view of his homeland as they carry him toward the docks. After all, it may be the last time he ever sees it and he wants to remember the wind moving through the trees and the glistening sand of his beaches.
The king of dragons, born for the sky and not the sea, is imprisoned in the belly of a warship.
The journey to the Eastlands is long, Hiccup knows this.
Locked away in his cell, his stomach turns with each wave that bashes against the hull of the ship. It feels as though the Great West Ocean and Sea of Suffering do not want the King of the Wilderwest to leave his archipelago. Their attempts are in vain, however, as the warship slices through the waves and presses ever forward.
He is given nothing to settle his stomach, though the daily rations of bread and water help ease the churning inside of him.
In his cell, time means little. The only indications he has are the changing of the guards and the sliver of light that hits his cell when the ocean is at peace.
Above his cage, a porthole allows in the smell of ocean air and when the sea is calm, a glimpse of the sky. The open-air calls to him, but grounded in every sense of the vile word, he can do little but yearn for the feeling of wind in his hair and scales beneath his hands. It’s the cruelest injustice he’s faced in the war to date.
The guards that stand outside his cell speak on his fate once they reach the Eastlands. They take bets on the number of days he has left.
Stubborn and prideful, Hiccup refuses to let their words shake him. He keeps his eyes toward the porthole and waits to see the sky.
xXx
In the nights, he calls for his wings. Screeching in that too-Night-Fury-to-be-human way, he seeks his Dragon-Brother. The guards view him as a demon.
Hiccup receives no response from his Dragon-Brother, but he knows his wings are alive. He would feel it in his bones and in his soul and in everything that is him if his Dragon-Brother had been lost to the war.
At nights, he calls for his wings.
But not this night. He hears the guards whispering of the queen’s visitation and he hears her steps as she draws closer to his cage. Slowing his breathing, he pretends to be asleep. His chest rises and falls in a steady rhythm, and she must believe his ruse because she leans down to study him curiously.
With cold eyes, she watches him. Her long blonde hair falls around her shoulders unrestrained, and through his lashes, Hiccup watches her and thinks that she could be beautiful if hatred and death did not follow her like shadows.
“Has he called for his dragon?” She whispers to her guards.
“Not tonight, Your Grace.” They respond.
“Is it true he speaks their language?” She asks, and Hiccup thinks he can hear in awe in her voice.
“It’s true. I’ve heard himself,” One guard replies.
“It’s…unnatural,” Another adds.
“It’s wonderful,” Astrid corrects. “He will train dragons for my army. With his help, we will finally take back everything that was stolen from us.”
“And if he won’t help?” A guard asks.
“Then he will die.”
When she leaves, he calls for his Dragon-Brother.
xXx
Days pass and Hiccup is carted across the sea like a prize jewel to be sold in a faraway bazaar.
The warship, finally, finds its home in the docks of the Eastland and Hiccup is brought onto land for the first time in weeks. Land—even foreign land—gives him hope. Land means open sky and dragons. It means resistance and survival and freedom.
Given his prosthetic, but restrained by two guards, Hiccup is led in the Queen's cavalcade. He stumbles through the streets of the Eastland’s capital city, taking in the sight of the tall, stone buildings and the jeering faces of its people. In the distance, Queen Hofferson’s fortress home looms in. Beneath its shadow, the queen rides on a horse of solid white.
She holds her head high, basking in the praise of her people as the war party files ever closer to its home. At her horse’s feet, flowers are thrown and in the air, songs are carried from ear to ear.
Children point and mock at Hiccup, but they fall silent and stare in awe at his dragons.
Deadly Nadders, the conquering queen’s favorite, are brought, caged and muzzled, on carts pulled by horses. The dragons hold their heads as though they are not prisoners. They brandish the spines on their tails, hissing beneath the muzzles and swinging their thorny crowns.
Behind the Deadly Nadders, a platoon of soldiers surrounds a single age.
Inside, a black dragon paces. Taking a single step, the dragon turns his body, tail curled around his legs, and steps in the other direction. His eyes, slits of black against green, glare out into the throng of people. Mouth bound by a muzzle, he cannot roar a challenge to the false queen’s authority. He searches for his Viking-Brother.
Over the soldiers and the Nadders, Hiccup’s eyes meet Toothless’s and their world settles.
Toothless smiles, gummy and pink, behind the harsh metal of his muzzle and it feels Hiccup’s heart with the happiest mixture of pride and relief.
If Toothless is still alive then all can still be well. With his fire and his wings, they can take back what was lost.
Hiccup stands straighter, posture befitting the king he is.
It is then, that Hiccup fortifies his mettle and swears to his gods—though he does not know if they can hear him in this foreign land.
He is a dragon. And dragons do not bow for conquerors.
Hiccup swears this to himself and his Dragon-Brother.
He swears they will touch the sky again.

The Kingdom of Tomorrow
The grand Kingdom of Tomorrow was not built until Hiccup turned twenty-five, a decade after the ending of ‘How To Fight A Dragon’s Fury’. After all, it would be impossible to unite all of the Viking tribes, each so disparate in their culture and relations, in such a short period of time. The prejudices and baggage of the old would have to be cast away for the new to take its place.
In the interim, the villages and houses burnt to ashes in the Dragon Rebellion would rise again, the ports opened and trade between the mainland and the archipelago reestablished.
Berk would be rebuilt, sturdier, portlier, and boggier than ever.
Of course, there would be some raiding, the Chieftains and Chieftesses getting back in their old habits. A year of slavery, then Alvinsmen vs Dragonmarkers had resulted in Tribal lines being blurred, some confusion as to whether one was still considered a member of their Tribe after having fought so long in another. The Murderous Tribe nearly started a civil war by trying to breed and domesticate more Stealth and Sniffer Dragons. It took a while before those issues would be resolved.
As for our little redheaded Hero himself...while Hiccup was indeed respected as a worthy Saviour of the Archipelago and King of the Wilderwest, not all would be quick to follow his command. Neither did Hiccup expect them to. After all, he was only a fifteen-year-old Warrior-in-Training, with still a lot of training and life to go through.
When the castle of Tomorrow was finally rebuilt, not by Hiccup but by Luna and the Wodensfang and all the little dragons of the Archipelago who wanted to be with humans once more, the King of the Wilderwest would be King in name only.
Chief Stoick and Berk would be its own separate entity, many Vikings and dragons unwilling to leave their little island. Even Hiccup was reluctant to leave. But be a King he must, and it was the young and hopeful who followed him to live on the island of Tomorrow, so close to the Murderous Mountains and the grim Sky and Sea Dragons who feasted on men without a care.
Many years later, though the Kingdom would be the greatest city in the Archipelago, there would still be humans on Berk and in places like Isle of the Quiet Life. The King would be fond of visiting his childhood home, still all heathery and bracken, a place where one could sink up to their knees in the bog if they weren’t careful.
The Thing, the annual gathering of Tribes, no longer took place on Berk, but in Tomorrow. And this time, the scrum of the Fire-Stone would be replaced by a Round Table where all could speak. Even the ones like the Lava-Louts, who just about everybody felt could drop dead without anyone really caring. But that was civility for you.
The Tomorrowmen (and Tomorrowomen) consisted of dragon and human alike, every citizen capable of speaking both Norse and Dragonese. The number of humans still outweighed the number of dragon citizens by a sizeable amount, but peace reigned in the land. As he grew older and peacefully quelled rebellions (and stomped out foreign incursions), the Tribes grew to respect him, and soon he had the final say in affairs relating to the Archipelago.
Until some dragons would get mad over a piece of fish being stolen. Or a human coming home to find their favourite pillow burnt to a crisp. Dragons would be dragons and humans would be humans. Then Hiccup and Luna would have to mediate between the two.
Luna turned out not to be a very good mediator. She professed eating the one who couldn’t substantiate their point by yelling hard enough.
Perhaps some dragons just aren’t ready yet for civilisation.

I've been having weirdly vivid dreams lately and they're normally just. Chaotic and mildly stressful. But last night it was literally just me not talking to Jojo Siwa because I didn't want to bother her???? I ran into her in target and just. Didnt say anything and that was the entire dream
Not as weird as the cyberpunk heist in the kingdom of the wilderwest though

A Hiccstrid story. (in the same world as Berk, but with some differences for my story)
Hiccup and Astrid come from two different places in the Archipelago. Hiccup is from the proud isle of Berk, and the heir to his tribe, and Astrid is from the mainlands; in the Kingdom of the Wilderwest.
When these two meet as children on a treaty visit, they become fast friends.
But what happens when Hiccup discovers something much darker about the Kingdom of the Wilderwest? and at the center of it all is Astrid... who has a secret of her own...
...it is a rare gift indeed...

Does Toothless stay with Hiccup in the books?
Yes and no. It’s debatable. No, because he will eventually go into hiding. There are no more dragons (He says ”There were dragons when I was a boy” and it is the truth.) and Hiccup wants everyone to believe they were mythical creatures.Yes, because of the epilogue of book 12. Let me explain:
At the end of How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury Hiccup writes a long epilogue about what happened to the kingdom of the Wilderwest while he was king. One thing that happened was that some dragons began to hide.
From page 484/485:They retreated north to be with their fellow dragons. Many of them developed the charmeleon skills of a Stealth Dragon, and disguised themselves so effectively in the grasses and the rocks and the seas, that you would not even notice they were there. Sometimes I used to lie very still on my stomach in the bracken, and stare very hard, and if I stayed there for a long time , then slowly, slowly, I could begin to see again the dim outline of a Tiddly-Nip-Tick-Botherer, or a Drowsy-Tipped Dragonmouse materialising in front of me for one second as it scurried camouflaged through the grasses - and then it was gone. That’s how I knew they were still there.
This tells us that many, if not most dragons began to hide. (I mean even dragon whisperer Hiccup has a hard time finding them.)
From those same pages:Gradually, in the last few years, even Toothless and Windwalker began to spend time away from me. They began to leave me for short stretches of time, and then slightly longer, and longer again. They always returned, however. Toothless would never leave me forever.
Hiccup is very certain Toothless would never leave him, despite the fact that he is spending time away from Hiccup. However, a few pages later he writes the following:
I sense an ending coming, or should I call it a new beginning? When Toothless flies to me next, it shall be for the last time. I am waiting for him now, just to see him one last time, just to remind myself, that, yes, he really does exist. … He will fly through that open window, he will shake out his wings and demand some food and setlle down in his old familiar place on my chest, blowing perfect violet-coloured smoke rings right above my heart.
This tells us that Toothless has a habit of visiting Hiccup once in a while.Because Hiccup is sure that Toothless would never leave him forever, the ‘last time’ can only mean one thing: Hiccup will be dead after Toothless’s last visit.
So in a sense, yes. Toothless stays with Hiccup. Toothless outlives Hiccup by hundreds of years (maybe a thousand), but he stays with his master until the end.
