‘The Duchess of Gloucester had another son a few days ago [August 26] - a Caesarian operation - and there is much discussion as to what name the child shall be given. The King favours Charles, which I think would be a good idea, but the Gloucesters apparently fancy Richard.’

Guests from throughout the courts of Europe were gathering in St Petersburg for another Russo-Greek wedding in August 1902, that of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark, one of the late Princess Alexandra's brothers, to Grand Duchess Helen, daughter of Vladimir. Paul could hardly be excluded from the occasion, but it might have been better for all concerned if he had absented himself. King George of the Hellenes, who had been equally distraught at his daughter's sudden death in 1889, was making his first visit to Russia since that tragic occasion. Although he showed his grandchildren Marie and Dmitri every possible kindness, he went out of his way to avoid Paul, who was evidently ill at ease, and preoccupied with other matters. At a family dinner he attempted to argue with Serge, who naturally did not want to let a happy family occasion be soured by one refractory member's personal dilemmas. Declining to discuss the matter, he said with a forced smile as he rose from the table, 'My boy, you are simply in a very bad mood; you ought to take better care of yourself'

While the bride and groom remained the centre of attention, Paul quietly slipped out of Russia by train, having arranged for a court official to meet him at the station with sufficient funds. He had told his children that he was leaving and they went to wave him off, forlornly convinced that they would never see him again. His destination was Italy, where he was followed once the wedding festivities were over by Serge and Ella who implored him to reconsider his responsibilities in Russia, particularly to his son and daughter. It was to no avail.

King George I of the Hellenes in a fancy frame.
George, born William of Denmark, was a Romanov relative many times over. He was the brother of Empress Maria Feodorovna; his wife was Olga Konstantinovna; and he was the father-in-law of three Romanovs: Pavel Alexandrovich, Georgiy Mikhailovich, and Elena Vladimirovna.

The Greek emerald parure.
The emeralds came to Greece with Queen Olga, who was born Grand Duchess Olga Constantinovna of Russia. She was the daughter of Grand Duke Constantine Nikolaevich, the second son of Tsar Nicholas I and the younger brother of Tsar Alexander II. Olga was only twelve when she met her future husband, King George I of the Hellenes, for the first time, and she had just turned sixteen when they married.
