Who: King Christian X Role: King of Denmark Allegiance: Neutral
As with most monarchies, Denmark initially committed to a policy of neutrality during the war but was invaded in 1940, surrendering in a matter of hours. Christian's popularity had taken a nose dive in the 1920s but his actions during the war would become his lasting legacy, making him one of the most popular monarchs Europe has ever known. He and his family chose not to flee like many other royal families and instead adopted a policy of quiet resistance. Their actions may have seemed small but in the context of occupation they were incredibly brave: Christian would regularly ride his horse around the streets, parading in front of Nazi guards as a visible symbol of Danish sovereignty and identity, and when Hitler wrote him a lengthy message on his birthday he responded with a curt 7 word response which infuriated the Nazi leader. His insignia soon became a symbol of national pride, worn on badges and pins by the people as a subtle show of resistance. Christian is also unique in that he is one of the few royals who we can prove was motivated by his desire to protect and defend his Jewish citizens, rather than simply protecting his nation's independence. In his diary Christian wrote movingly about his deep fears Denmark would be forced to introduce anti-semitic laws, even writing that if Jewish people were forced to wear the yellow Star of David then he would wear one in solidarity, and he personally financed Denmark's heroic efforts to smuggle Jews to safety, at great personal risk.

genuinely I think one of the most pressing calls for Christians (namely Protestant Christians) today is to stop underestimating the power of beauty
visual beauty, beauty in word, beauty in sound, beauty in story
we have ceded beauty for the past 70 years to the atheistic world and people of all beliefs are realizing that world has failed to carry that standard. people are realizing their daily lives are starved of beauty--especially natural beauty--so they are turning to the entities which recognize its power. entities like paganism, witchcraft, ancestor worship, the New Age. if they are drawn to Christianity (not necessarily believing it), they are more likely to attend a Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox mass.
humans need beauty because humans need God, and beauty belongs to God. which means the church should be the standard-bearer of beauty in this world.
if a church can afford it, they should prioritize building a beautiful church, even if that means it will be smaller or less trendy.
if a church has skilled musicians in their midst, they should prioritize using those musicians in worship, even if it means the style of the music changes.
the church should always prioritize hymns and spiritual songs which exemplify goodness, truth, and beauty in their composition and lyrics, even if it means newcomers don't understand every line yet.
all these forms of beauty should reflect the beauty of the story of the Gospel.

I’ll keep the king when you are gone away. I’ll keep him safe from the dark things that wait. — King by The Amazing Devil
INPRNT | COMMISSION INFOS
-
Some details for archaeology nerds (Here we go again AHAHAHA)
First of all the costume Alfred wears in this pic is BY NO MEANS historical accurate, but if we really want to be 100% accurate then to my knowledge there’s a high chance that Alfred wouldn’t be wearing dresses gowns at all (whoever decided to make Alfred wear those pretty cough dresses cough in the show I wish your family to prosper for all eternity YOU’RE A HERO), so instead I just chose to design whatever clothes I want and add some Anglo-Saxon elements in it :)
1. Alfred’s earrings
Took inspiration from the 7th century Anglo-Saxon/Frankish crystal ball, now in Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Here’s the thing, I know English men (and the monarchs) don’t wear earrings until the 16th century and earrings weren’t even popular during the Anglo-Saxon period, but once I saw Charles I wearing pearl earrings in his portrait I just can’t help but put something pretty on Alfred’s ears as well lol…Sadly I can’t find the exact size of this one but the official site says that it was used as a pendant/an amulet! Probably for pagan practices though, but it’s pretty, isn’t it? :D

2. Patterns on Alfred’s gown
Taken from the patterns on the Bewcastle Cross in Cumbria (which used to belong to Northumbria, built in around the 7th to early 8th century, aka the period Bede lived in.

3. The woven band
The pattern is taken from the Laceby band found in Laceby, Lincolnshire, dated to early 7th century. It seems both Scandinavians and Anglo-Saxons enjoy wearing tablet-woven bands? Saw this kind of things a lot in viking clothes reconstruction as well.

4. …Whatever this is
From fol. 34r in Book of Kells, the famous Celtic gospel book completed in Ireland circa 800 AD. As you can see I got lazy during drawing this lol but the illustrations in the original manuscripts are really impressive!

Now I don’t know if this is a good news or not but I’ve still got like…six wips for alhtred in hand…Good god of arts DELIVER ME

Wallowing in luxury: This can become a problem
The Royal Palace has often been called a public gathering point, but trooping up dressed in exclusive and expensive designer brands signals something completely opposite, believes Ekstra Bladet's royal commentator, Kim Bach, who estimates that the expensive habits could become a problem for the Royal Palace.

The expensive shoes, shirts, and jewellery were found when Crown Prince Christian put on his student cap. However, exclusive habits can become a problem for the royal family, often associated with folkliness, according to Ekstra Bladet's royal commentator, Kim Bach.
- When you want to signal [that you're one of the people] but are revealed that you are not, then that is a problem. If anyone was in doubt as to whether the royal family belonged to the upper class, then this helps to remove the doubt, believes Kim Bach, who continues:
- At first glance, the average viewer will think that [the Royal Family] look nice and beautiful, but with the fact that today you have social media where you can find information about what their clothes cost, it becomes wider [knowledge] in the population and, therefore, tampers with the myth that the royals are popular.
Shirt for DKK 11,600
On Monday, Crown Prince Christian graduated from Ordrup Gymnasium in a shirt from Prada for DKK 11,600, an expensive Rolex watch, and beige sneakers from Lanvin for approximately DKK 4,100. His siblings were also dressed in exclusive brands.
For example, 13-year-old Prince Vincent wore a pair of sneakers from Prada for 7,000 DKK, and 17-year-old Princess Isabella wore a 'P' necklace with a diamond from Dulong for 16,900 DKK. She also had a bracelet from Hermès for 5,200 DKK and sandals from the same brand for 4,850 DKK. The sandals are probably Queen Mary's, as she has worn these several times. Princess Josephine, aged 13, wore a bracelet from Dior for DKK 2,600 and two from Valentino for DKK 1,940 each.
Translation and editing for clarity by me from an article by Caroline H. Bilstrup for Ekstra Bladet, published on June 26, 2024.
