i have suddenly become obsessed with a theme that HoO established but never proceeded to extrapolate on, which is:

You are Percy Jackson, and you have been swapped with a boy who was allegedly everyone's favorite person, but they have decided to replace him with you. They just met you. there's something so incredibly sweet about how many times davrin notes in his journal that talking to rook helped him with something. he keeps bringing them out to touch grass and gaze at nugs out in the woods with him which I think must be very good for them, and their company clearly helps him work through and get more clarity on things he's been stuck on emotionally. it's just kind of lovely and a great little nuance in that relationship.

actually, i think this is an incredibly important insight into their relationship, and how lu guang sees it. because over and over again, we see cheng xiaoshi's reckless, thoughtless kindness result in the worst possible outcome. people die, because cheng xiaoshi is kind. but lu guang is right, isn't he? it's not wrong to be kind. it's not wrong to want to help people. because cheng xiaoshi's kindness might have changed the fates of people like emma and xu shanshan, but he did not hurt them, or kill them. other people did. other people took advantage of the opportunity cheng xiaoshi's kindness offered to hurt those women.

it's not the kindness that is the problem. it's the people taking advantage of it.
