Get to Know a Factor of 9 People Game
I was tagged by @mysticstarlightduck (post here) for this one!
Favorite Color - Blue. Cerulean blue, if you really wanna get specific.
Currently Reading - The Case of Kindall, K. by writeblr/whumpblr @callaeidae3!
Last Series - I haven't really been able to stay awake for a new series since last year, but I managed to get through a few episodes of Cunk on Earth. After one, I was totally annoyed with her on behalf of the historians whose time she was wasting and was mostly hate-watching it (I think that may have been the point).
+ Bonus: Last Movie - Vacation Friends 2. Asleep within 5 minutes.
Sweet, Savory, or Spicy - Savory. I've cut out sugar from my diet for the most part. I recommend it!
Currently Working On - Ch. 27 of GSNBTR. Of course.
I'll gently tag 3 people and say I tagged 9.
:ducks: Don't get mad at me if you've already done this or similar! The answers change!

Whumpmas in July #4: Media That Gives You Whumperflies
Tumblr media
I don’t actually consume a great deal of media at the moment, but for books I’d say The Kindall, K series by @callaeidae3 (link goes to Amazon author page).
For a movie, the Studio Ghibli adaptation of Earthsea. By all accounts it’s not even close to the book, but I remember the whumperflies.
And for a series, I think the two Full Metal Alchemist anime adaptations are pretty whumpy. I also got a lot of whumperflies from what I saw of the Voltron remake. I don’t actually watch very much 2D animated content, but they do get across whumperflies in a way that live action media can sometimes struggle with.
There’s some amazing whumperflies-inducing stuff on tumblr! Here are two posts I tagged as #whumperflies due to the feelings they invoked at the time.
Birb by @whump-side, my favourite whump art of all time.
Zuriel’s fall by @that-one-thespian

The naming of my designated whumpee OCS, Yuuki and Kyle:
Yuuki Takahashi
Yuuki was named after a character in Erased / Boku Dake ga Inai Machi - the live action drama which heavily inspired the first book of my novel series, The Case of Kindall, K. "Yuuki" was the nickname of this character.
Yūki is also the given name of the actor who played Satoru (the protagonist).
Kyle Kindall
Kyle's name was chosen based on wanting a an average sounding name that could apply to a vast range of character types. Someone whose name could "fade into the background" in society.
And because of Kyle's bicultural heritage, Arkala'ana and Scottish, I wanted a name that could have both native Arkala'anahn and English language equivalents.
Kyle's Arkala'anahn first name is Kai'irh, which is based off the Mandarin version of the name, Kai'er.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those with whump OCs, comment/reblog with their names and why you chose those names (if there was any particular reason)
I’m curious about the naming process

The Case of Kindall, K. (Kindall K series #1) by Renée Nielsen
A mystery/thriller/suspense, action and adventure novel
When seventeen-year-old Kyle Kindall is imprisoned despite pleading not guilty, the judge – suspecting Kyle may have been poorly represented at the trial – assigns a trusted friend to find more evidence that may support Kyle’s story.
But Yuuki Takahashi is already dealing with a lot of stress in his life when Timothy, the judge, approaches him. After an incident rendered him with PTSD a year ago, he’s at war with himself as to whether or not he should take on Kindall’s case. However, it’s not just his health at stake here; it’s Kyle freedom as well. Why would anyone still insist they aren’t guilty even when everyone and everything else suggests otherwise?
Yuuki can’t help but feel that something isn’t right and he’s determined to find out why.
Available on Amazon: Paperback | eBook
ISBN-13: 978-0473478766
First published in 2019*
*The first edition of The Case of Kindall, K. was self-published without association with Callaei Books. This is a second edition, revised and now under the imprint Callaei Books.

Living in the Present Tense
Don’t get me wrong, I am presently Rather Tense, ahahah. But in all seriousness, overall I feel fairly okay today - which is nice! <3 It means I can go to a coffee shop and read stuff with the Fairy Tail theme playing on repeat through my headphones without jumping at loud noises. :D :D Yay for days at the coffee shop! :D <3
Complex PTSD is a real bitch. Add on some hormonal imbalances, depression, and anxiety, and it’s a Molotov cocktail of impressive proportions.
But I’ve found that the trick to dealing with my trauma (and all that entails) is to use it as fuel.
Fuel for creativity, or inspiration, or when locking my sights onto an issue that I can take action on. I can’t fix every problem, but I can take action to do something about it.
(As a lot of you already know, I had a fairly awful childhood. Lots of trauma, near-death experiences, parental neglect/emotional abandonment, oodles and oodles of bat-shit crazy chaos that my child’s brain either repressed or straight up denied for ooooh, about two and half decades. (Survival instincts are weird, but hey, it worked long enough for me to get the hell out of dodge, so, I guess that’s a win!))
I know I’ve said it before, but I’m going to sit down and write something that I intend to self-publish. It might be a fiction series, or it might be something more along the lines of a mini-autobiography. I don’t know what I will call it, but I really like the sound of ‘Icarus Rising’. :D I might have to change the names, but dang, I really want to write this somehow. <3
I would be remiss if I did not mention that this has been inspired by my dear friend @callaeidae3 self-publishing her very own book series!! <3 I am mid-way through the ‘Case of Kindall, K’ and I LOVE IT! Go check it out! :D :D

*looks at my writing of KK2* ...yeah oops
On the other hand, I would say that - if discussion of the plan serves an important narrative purpose - it could be kept.
In Kindall K Book 2, for example, with the plan for the hostage situation rescue. I wrote out the behind-the-scenes planning of Joshua, Kyle and Sam's attempt to rescue Yuuki from the hostage situation - I wanted it to be a part of the storytelling.
This is because is it gave a sense of the hostage situation unravelling in real time (i.e. how it might feel to be a character rendered in that situation). Rather than skipping "what would it realistically feel like to experience this situation playing out from Kyle's point of view?", I wanted to try to capture that.
I also wanted the planning to add to the suspense of the idea that the plan had a high probability of failing, and that what they were doing felt futile and ridiculous.
Slight spoiler from KK3: that plan would've failed if one of the antagonists (Luis) hadn't actually let them get away with rescuing Yuuki. Luis saw it happening. He heard it happening. But he kept quiet about it, and didn't tell Juun to alert him.
If Juun had realised on his own what was happening, though...they'd have been screwed (Kyle and Yuuki primarily). Joshua's idea of back up defense from the rooftop probably wouldn't have been enough.
---
So, in this sense, while I am still critical of my writing for KK2, I still remember my reason for wanting to tell the story this way. Was it the best way to go? Maybe, maybe not.
But it was the storytelling direction I wanted to go with, the narrative experience that I wanted to try to create.
if your characters are discussing a plan and the plan is going to work, skip the discussion. readers will see it play out for themselves. if the plan is going to fail, show the discussion so readers will see and know that the plan is failing

What are some of your favorite whump series?
Ooh. I feel like this is a tricky ask to answer, because I'm on a lot of tag lists and I wouldn't want anyone to feel disappointed that I didn't mention their series.
And there were a lot more series I wanted to add (I can think of at least five more), but this time I didn't want to just rattle off a list and call it done. I wanted to really focus on each series shout-out, which took more energy than I expected.
So do bear in mind that this is just a small selection of favourites and is not exhaustive. I'm happy to give other recommendations that are tailored to the whumpy interests of anyone who wants them!
The Blackmuir Reign by @deluxewhump
(Winner of the "I Absolutely Inhaled This Prose" award)
I love fantasy whump, and The Blackmuir Reign has some lovely ASOIAF vibes whilst retaining its own identity. It has some of the highest prose quality of anything I've read online. The author is incredibly skilled at writing complex situations and relationships, of which there is plenty of diversity (Protective, almost surrogate parent and child relationships! Characters that could once have been considered whumpers, becoming whumpees and being caretaken by the same people they once tormented! Past sexual relationships with awkward power dynamics!)
This series is definitely worth checking out if you want some medieval-style politics, and maybe a few pirates as well.
The Case of Kindall, K by @callaeidae3
(Winner of the "Got Ley Reading Books Again" award)
Quick disclaimer that this series would have been on the list even before Callaei and I became mutuals. So far she's released three books in the series, plus a prequel. I've spent my whole adult life struggling to focus on books, but this is the most ADHD-friendly series I've ever read.
As for what it's about—without giving too much away and / or rambling for the next thousand words, it's about a teenager in prison for murder, and the corruption and political agendas wrapped up in that. Callaei balances hurt and comfort really well, and even the worst situations have a rainbow lurking just behind the storm clouds. There's some beautiful platonic intimacy between the two main characters, and a diverse range of captive, emotional and environmental whump.
Unintentional by @distinctlywhumpthing
(Winner of the "Completely Distracted Ley From Her Responsibilities" award)
One of my all-time favourite whump series ever. It ticks a lot of boxes for tropes I like: hurt / comfort, mystery, and a mute / almost-mute whumpee. I've never been a BBU lover, but I love the twists the author puts on the concept—especially the human experimentation / lab whump side of things. I would love to see more BBU stories in this vein, delving into ideas that may not always present themselves as traditional boxboy whump.
This series takes the honour for being that one story I binge read instead of sleeping / getting ready for work / doing whatever other important thing I was supposed to be doing at the time.

Hey! Thanks for sharing my art! ^^ I just wanted to mention that the candlelight prompt art is actually of Kyle Kindall, an oc from my original story Kindall K series! The way I drew Kyle in this picture (especially with his hair at that length and in that condition) does make him look a bit like Keith, so all goods re the mix up!! ^^ - but I was wondering if you wouldn't mind correcting the tag or something in case people think that it is Keith I had drawn when it's actually Kyle?
((Sometimes I like to see what notes people may have left when reblogging, hence how I noticed! In any case, thanks for reblogging!))
oh hello! I’ve seen your art before and I really like it!
And i DID notice! I reblogged this from justheretobreakthings and they do have a tag with Kindal K, but I was one of your readers in AO3 when that story was “the case of Kogane, K” so I  guess that’s why they look similar! =D
ah yes... that was a good story, but I’m glad you’re continuing it as an original series now!
...in any case I don’t have a tag for Kindall and sometimes I’m too lazy to make a new tag, so I figured I’ll just tick him to Keith and be done!
(...sorry for the rant: it’s just I have a piece of art due and I’m procrastinating with this comment!) :P

Hi! I'm an indie author - I've published Kindle editions of my whump/hurt-comfort centric story, "The Case of Kindall, K.", on Kindle ~
The main characters, Kyle Kindall and Yuuki Takahashi, are queerplatonic. Kyle is canonically aromantic asexual.
Tumblr media
The rest of the Kindall K series are also on there (I can't remember if it's specifically Kindle Unlimited, but they're definitely there on Kindle!)
back in Kindle Unlimited...and I want to read your books
If any of you have published in KU feel free to reply/reblog with your stories!!
(Until May, at least)
What I like to read:
Fantasy exclusively, just imagine all the next bullets have "fantasy" on them
Short novels/novellas/short stories
Gaslamp/steampunk/not-just-medieval timeframe
Either super funny/cozy
...OR super dark horror gorefests
Whump tbh
Queer characters!!!
Especially asexual characters, bonus if there's a romantic element
(I just like the queer element to be discussed and pretty important, even if it's not a coming out story)
Polyam/reverse harem
Retellings of myths and fairy tales
Elves that remind you more of The Dragon Prince and Dragon Age than ACOTAR (all my love to ACOTAR)
Magical creatures that aren't often the leading folks in books (centaurs? Satyrs? Succubi? I could go on)
Hyperspecific: beautiful posh boys who are vile wretched little creatures
If any of this sounds like you please help me stock my Kindle 🙏 I must consume new indie stories
PS. If I like it I can guarantee you that I'll write a review
And if I don't like it I can guarantee you that I'll flip through all the pages regardless so you get your coin
