Working on a YA novel…
Okay, so I’m nearly finished the first draft of Relevé, the follow-up to Tumbling. I want to check on a few things besides ballet-related stuff.
Main character is primarily a kinaesthetic learner: she learns best by doing stuff. I could use resources that have helped others with similar challenges, especially accommodations and strategies that help with both academic performance and physical learning as with dance.
Main character has an anxiety disorder. I would love resources to check strategies as I’ve written some that help me but I know everyone’s different!
One of main character’s closest friends (from her church) is Chinese Canadian, and another (from her ballet studio) is an immigrant from India. Anyone able to do a sensitivity read for those? I am woefully aware of my limited experience with people from these cultures and I know that what I think is probably fine may not be in reality.
If you would be able to help out, please message me to discuss terms. If you would like to read Tumbling first, to see if my writing is even something you might like to bother with, we can make that happen too.
As the title says, YA fiction. It’s contemporary and the main characters of these books are disabled.

Crunch Time Exam Prep
My girl @seliniteheart requested: “How to prepare for exams 3-4 weeks ahead while not going insane because they're the hardest exams in the entire major” and this seems time-sensitive, so I gotchu girly! I hope I got this to you in time!!
Scheduling
Break your time up effectively so that you can get as much information crammed into your brain as possible
Break it down also so thay you repeat the information on a good interval. Maybe, if there’s three weeks to go, repeat question x every monday and info y every tuesday, and do a practise paper every friday?
If applicable, figure out what’s most likely to be on the exam and focus on that
Focus also on your weak points. Don’t waste energy on the things you know and are good at, give them a go over but focus on the stuff you don’t like
Schedule productive breaks- if you’ve been elbows down on your desk for a bit and want to keep the study energy up but need a break, take a break for some kinaesthetic learning, for example.
Take 0% breaks- in other words, take some breaks to do absolutely nothing, where even thinking about the exam is BANNED. Life-Hack- inform other people of this strategy so that you don’t get your mum coming into your room like “how’s the studying going?” when you’re mid-meditation, or to be watching your comfort YouTuber when your bestie is like “girl, I’m so stressed for this exam on Monday!” This time is for 0 brain power, no stress.
Sorry to the girlies who also have to consider jobs and other priorities, but see if you can work with your employers, the aunt you babysit for etc to reduce your time, or if you can blend your studies. Eg maybe you’re studying for a maths exam, which means helping your little cousin with maths homework keeps you in the right mindset to study for an hour when you get home. Or maybe your retail job is cool and lets you study in the breakroom, or even take your textbook to the till when its quiet.
If your bosses aren’t cool, unfortunately, you just have to make the most of spare time, but as long as you’re maximising your study time to work for you, you can do this!
Breaks
As mentioned above, schedule in breaks that keep the vibes up, and breaks that turn your brain OFF completely. Set yourself school hours eg 9-3 or even 9-5. Doesn’t matter, just pick a time in the evening when that’s it OVER and no more studying.
Make sure to go for water regularly, and eat at regular times- and DO NOT take your notes with you!
Taking Care of Yourself
Make your study experience as painless as possible by giving yourself a good environment. If you like the library, sequester yourself into a cozy corner; if you like a café, same deal. If you’re at home, make sure to keep your space tidy and organised.
I’m gonna mention going to get water again. Go get some right now, actually. Where I live, the hottest days of the year are exam season and back-to-school season. Christmas exams are a whole separate nightmare but you’ll still sweat through your fifteen million layers! Go hydrate!
If you’re hunched over your desk, you need to stretch. Find YouTube video you like, especcially if you’re not that familir with stretching. And go for a walk at least once a day, weather permitting.
If you’re a kinaesthetic learner especially, do a proper cooldown after exercising! That’s true anyway, but especially if you’re adding your brain as a muscle to train.
Actually, maybe we should all be doing warm-ups and cool downs… go over your favourite aspects of your subject in a quick five minutes at the start and end of your sessions!
The Actual Studying
Aka, the hard bit. Its so much mor fun to just organise your space, gather all your pens, and set up your instagramable study session, avoiding the actual “study” bit- God knows that’s me. How you actually study is so different person to person and subject to subject, so I’m going to give tips that are hopefully applicable to a lot of people, but may not all work for everyone!
Cater to your own preferences: I sometimes listen to classical music when I study, I sometimes listen to numetal, so what makes sense to you.
If you need to, block out all distractions: do not disturb on your phone, even turn off your wifi if you can.
If you’re like me and need distractions eg adhd: try pacing to shed any excess energy, listen to loud music (lol like my numetal ha), if possible, listen to your notes aloud while doing something else (I used to play solitaire in class). I find that if you have something else that you can focus on such as a pretty menial/repetitive game like solitaire, or a song with lyrics, your brain gives more energy to that so that instead of a hundred million thoughts distracting you, its only one extra thing.
Read your notes aloud to yourself and walk around your room- hit all three learning styles at once
Write and re-write things, condense it down, do past papers, and just keep repeating the same information until you’re sleep-talk in just the quadratic formula and/or you’re even dreaming in French.
Ok, that’s it for now. I hope that helped selineiteheart, and I hope it was useful to anyone else who needs this! There are a tonne of resources out there, and I’m sure you’ll find what works for you- lmk what you want to see next! Also, I hope you do well in your exams! Good luck, I’m sure you’ve got this!!

i'm trying anki because i saw people recommend it for vocabulary learning but am i right to think there's no like. answer input. it's purely a digital flashcard where you say the answer to yourself (out loud or in your head) then press to reveal it?
or i'm guessing if you CAN do answer input it requires some convoluted card setup? (i barely understood the most basic card setup, this is the least intuitive interface i've seen in years and i work in a field where half the websites are from 2003)
pure flashcards with no input is not useful to me -- i need to be forced to learn to spell and i am also a kinaesthetic learner for whom purely visual info does nothing, i need to physically interact with the material -- so if i am understanding this programme correctly it is not going to be what i need :/ alternative recommendations appreciated

Week 2 Blog
In my ideal role as an environmental interpreter, I envision working at the intersection of climate change awareness and nature conservation. This role would be rooted in both education and action, where I could engage diverse audiences to help them understand the impact of climate change on natural ecosystems and empower them to take part in solutions. I see myself working in a national park, conservation area, or community-based organization that focuses on environmental stewardship.
One of the main aspects of this role would be to create experiences that connect people with the natural world in a meaningful way. I would aim to communicate the urgency of climate action, but in a way that fosters hope rather than fear. This is where interpretive skills come into play! being able to engage my audience emotionally and intellectually by weaving together facts and stories that resonate with them. For example, while leading a hike, I could discuss how rising temperatures are affecting plant and animal species in the area, highlighting real-life examples of resilience and adaptation. By sharing stories of ecosystems adapting to climate change, I would aim to foster a deeper connection between visitors and the environment, motivating them to protect it.
Tumblr media
A key concept from the course that I would apply in this role is the importance of understanding different learning styles. As discussed in the lesson, learners can be auditory, visual, or tactile/kinaesthetic, and it’s crucial to adapt my interpretive methods accordingly. Some visitors may prefer hands-on activities, such as planting trees or participating in citizen science projects, where they can actively contribute to conservation efforts. Others may benefit from visual aids, like charts or infographics, that explain complex climate data in an easy-to-understand format. Meanwhile, auditory learners might be engaged through storytelling or podcasts, a format that allows for deeper reflection on environmental issues. My goal would be to cater to all these learning styles to ensure that my message reaches as many people as possible.
Moreover, the role would require strong communication and storytelling skills. As an interpreter, I would need to be able to clearly explain scientific concepts while making them accessible to a general audience. This involves more than just presenting facts, it’s about creating a narrative that connects people to the environment in a personal way. For instance, I could draw on my own experiences growing up by the Mediterranean Sea and later in Canada, sharing how nature has shaped my life and why its protection matters to me. Personal stories often resonate with audiences, helping them see the human side of environmental issues. I would also need to be adaptable by tailoring my approach to different audiences, whether children on a field trip or adults in a workshop, to keep them engaged and ensure they have a meaningful experience.
Ultimately, my ideal role as an environmental interpreter would combine my passion for nature and climate change action with a deep commitment to educating and inspiring others. By creating experiences that are both informative and emotionally resonant, I hope to help foster a generation of environmental stewards who will take action to protect the planet!

Telling
Years ago, Imogen bought a hand mirror. It was a small and compact oval shape, unadorned by frame engravings or even a handle, that fit right in the cavity of her palm. This was one in an avalanche of purchases she had convinced herself were 'must have's for adventuring. The majority of them made like Nym and sunk to the bottom of her bag, but the mirror survived by worming its way into her grooming kit instead.
Imogen was also the proud owner of a top bunk in the crew's quarters. She'd borrowed it on their trip to Garlemald when she asked Charlette to be her bunk-mate; she didn't want the desk that came with the bottom bit, and the top bunk felt oddly freeing, like a hammock hung from high branches. When she formally joined the Castaways, she reclaimed it as soon as the bed was vacated.
A pilot-in-training knew better than to hog a shared restroom for her nonsense, so she took her hand mirror and ascended to her lofty bed. Turned away from the salon space in the middle of the room, she held the looking glass up a good arm's length away from her face.
First, Imogen examined herself with features resting. How did they naturally fall? Where were lines already apparent? Did she have any acne scars or unfortunately placed scabs that wouldn't be going away for a while? Why did her eyebrows tangle up at the ends like that? Since when did she have that crust on the bottom of her lip, when did she chew it? One of her eyelids had more creases than another and it made her look off-kilter—
She put down the mirror for a second.
The next task came quickly. She pulled her face into a myriad unfamiliar expressions. It was almost disturbing how easily she contorted her body to suit the image of someone else using it. She had never thought herself a marionette — the mere implication was nauseating — but how else could one explain the elasticity of her face when she put it to use?
Imogen could frown like Spicer, which was always a subtle affair due to his light features, a spot of apologetic levity between his brows. Imogen could frown like Rubble, an unmistakable dissatisfaction that carved permanent lines into the hollows of his cheeks. When Imogen frowned like herself, her face hardly moved from its neutral position, and she found herself picking at all the little parts of her face that she didn't like.
Others' visages came so naturally to her as she rotated: Falcon's asymmetrical uptick of a smile, Sherry's lidded eyes and gently creased bow, Cookie's inscrutable wide eyes that darted this way and that, and Brigitte's permanently irritated face that… honestly wasn't too different from her own. She went through them in repetitions, honing the details each time she glanced down into the quarters' well and caught them passing through. Tiny corrections she stuck a pin in her skull for: Mister Grief didn't really frown so much as have a heavy pokerface, for example. Buckle's smile occasionally inspired crows' feet in the corners of his eyes, and she didn't often notice it from her low angle on him.
Her face muscles were starting to hurt. If she were a better artist like Cain, perhaps she wouldn't have to do this to get the image in her head. But she was a kinaesthetic learner — a term she'd picked up from Charlette, when she spoke of how Imogen had taken to the infirmary organisation fairly quick. This essentially doomed her to a life of whole-assing things. Her features retreated to the soft release of her pillow. Then she started all over again.
She'd thought about Cain just then, so she practiced him neutral. She never believed the man's face was best described as a 'pokerface'. Rather, his features were a clean, glass sheen over layers of material underneath, and the subtlest changes could be gleaned by an observant eye — they were amplified by that glass casing, even. When something bothered Cain, his bottom lip turned down and his brow knit together. When something embarrassed him, he looked away. She had a feeling that the illusionist would simply render him immovable to any emotion, when he was very much emotionful, that blank default state making it all the more apparent when equilibrium was disturbed.
Charlette came to mind too, and she would have to lock away that Charlette she'd gotten to know behind closed doors. It was the Charlette of the early years that she conjured up in her mind. The illusionist would never render her happy, she thought, and so it was authoritarian Charlette that took the fore. Those were anxious eyes ready to pounce on just about anything, a lip almost always moving so it was impossible to mimic it at rest. Scrutinising eyes that screwed themselves into their prey pair.
It made her sad to think about, and so she took another break.
Several members of their retinue for this mission were relatively easy to mimic. For example, Senca possessed of that pokerface for which Cain was often mistaken. Imogen also didn't have to do any upper face work to mirror her, which was grand. It was Senca's words that she'd have to watch out for, inscrutable and not something she was willing to practice. Luca… had been different of late, but she could easily replicate warbly smile that painted her features a moon ago. There was something about trying to mimic Luca's recent throes that felt wrong to her; she wrote the feeling off as not wanting to waste time, for her funk was surely impermanent. Opal was passionate and her face moved as one would expect it to; big bright smiles, watery eyes when something wasn't right, and fiery passion on the littlest pleasures of the world. Celica had a mulling face, like she was always considering something far away; she also laughed so hard it showed her molars, and quirked her brow all the way into her forehead — when she allowed herself to feel, she felt so evidently — and that was a fun repetition to bounce between.
A less fun repetition was Imogen's impression of Yoki. She cycled through poses that Imogen couldn't really pull off without silently screaming into a pillow — those little bits where she touched a peace sign to her cheek or struck a wink. They were harder to pull off without looking like a complete fool, and she gained a new appreciation for how much work Yoki likely put into practicing them. And then there was Yoki's tiny, delicate wince, which was far quicker to pin down and a well-deserved cooldown.
Gale had their poses too. Knuckles to the side of their cheek, occasionally unfurling to frame their jawline perpendicular to their thumb and index. Again, this brought Imogen close to tears of laughter — how fucking absurd to witness her own face this way. Gale had a serious face that took great practice for Imogen to mimic to a point of 'well, that will do', what with the intensity of their glare that she couldn't quite capture with her ocean eyes. It would've been the side of Gale that the illusionist saw, and for once she was happy that she'd seen it too.
Osric proved easier than she expected. Every so often, she popped her head down to look at him. His expression was always the same. Shifting eyes that never followed the bridge of his nose. It wasn't difficult to draw a comparison to the Brumelings she knew, whose puckered look was the sign of piqued hunger. She found Osric almost handsome in that sick way she tried and failed to smother, that he was playing keep-away with his face, and if she caught him she'd earn a prize.
Finally, it was Red's turn. She stared into her own mien for what felt like eons, then put the mirror down with finality. There was not much point in practicing. If she did it anymore, it would start to ache.
Imogen relinquished herself from the crew's quarters and looked around to check her work. But on the busy Cetea, everyone's faces blended together. Unsung and Castaway alike were a writhing mass of ants marching tired-eyed through the corridors, and she couldn't tell the difference between two pairs of eyes she'd distinguished as 'Cain's brown' and 'Osric's hazel'.
There was a privilege to what she'd observed before, a peace she sorely missed in the chaos. Peace she once hated and mistook for boredom. Whether she would have the privilege again when the illusionist struck was for them to decide.

*according to aphantasia.org aphantasia is "is the inability to visualize. Otherwise known as image-free thinking." the same source defines hypophantasia as "low visual imagination" meaning persons may "experience flashes or struggle to create mental images" and such persons "have described experiences almost like aphantasia". below is an image from the same source to help put things into perspective

Hello!! So I have a question about adhd and reading. I've found that I can easily sit down a read a fiction book with no problem. However, I struggle to read nonfiction, even if the content is relatively interesting. My guess is that because I think in mostly images, it takes more effort to read something that doesn't allow my brain to form any visuals. Is this just me, or do most people with adhd think in pictures as well?
Sent January 11, 2023
The idea of "thinking in pictures" tends to be more associated with autism, thanks to Temple Grandin, but it seems to be more related to how we learn. Visual learners tend to be visual thinkers (which makes a lot of sense).
A lot of ADHDers tend more toward being kinaesthetic learners, which is learning by doing. Nobody learns through just one style, but we all have one that's more effective than the others.
Followers, are you visual thinkers? How do you learn best? How do you think this affects your reading?

Wick/most au’s… are you kidding the same thing-?!
____________________
Caleb is actually smarter then you think.
I mean… yeah the weavers are pretty smart but unlike his family, he’s an audio and kinaesthetic learner, he learns by listening and doing things.
But he can’t visually learn because he gets distracted very easily. He has to learn by someone talking to him or to do it himself.
It’s the error of his own ways is how he learns.
Although unlike his other siblings who learn from visual and can get it right from the first time after reading from a manual, he can’t get it right first time.
But that never really bothers him, he may not learn as quickly as visual but he does when someone is talking and a lot of trial and error.
____________________
I really am not kidding when I say he can be smart.
Like c’mon! There was clearly a lot of practice involved with digging underground as a ghost and I know it’s instinct like how it is before you die. To me? It comes with practice before you become a ghost story threat to give nightmares. Besides…
The slit mouthed woman learned patience with her victims. Even when she’s very angry.

1 - How it started.
Two weeks ago I walked up 'n over to my aunt, who lives next door to me and asked her if she had some knitting needles and wool to show me how to do it. When I get the urge to do something, I need to do it right now, it can't wait, I need to ride this wave - thankfully my aunt is very much the same so she took one look at me, got up from her seat and started rifling through her stuff to find what I asked for. She used to be an expert knitter, but her eyesight is poor these days so she doesn't bother with that anymore - she is also, as I figured out quickly, not all that good at explaining shit. But eh, we made it work. We are both very kinaesthetic oriented learners and for her this is easy-peasy muscle memory and I had to remind her I have no context no idea how to loop what and where and more importantly, my hands may have a lot of muscle memory on various tasks but not this, none of that. So she manipulated my hand a bit until I got the idea of how and bäm. Suddenly I was knitting.
Well. I tried my best. It was a learning curve, thankfully a steep one. See, she cast on ten loops for me and did the first two rows to get me started and I jumped in and somehow made that 13 loops. That was fun because she of course asked me how the hell and I had no answer because we were at the bare bones, how to increase was not even a topic yet so idk what I did there.
Tumblr media
Next issue, which I was not really surprised by if I am honest, was the fact that I was knitting too tightly. See, as artist I have the issue of gripping my pens too tight, so tight in fact that I sometimes cut off the blood circulation in my fingers while I draw detailed linework. I have compression opera gloves to mitigate that issue a bit and keep my hands and arms protected while I try to unlearn this. I also started embroidery in autumn of 2022 and there I like to pull the thread tight to make the embroidery neat and even, so.. both of these things worked against me a wee bit. But I worked on this little test piece for like three days straight to get the movement into my system. To get my grip under control. To get a rhythm going. (To make sure I will not add any more loops to a row than those 13 because seriously where the fuck did they come from.)
Tumblr media
I mostly tried to get even rows but in the beginning I made some waves between tight loops and trying to loosen them again but eventually it clicked with my hands what I wanted them to do in terms of pressure and pull. My aunt is a darling you know? She said, those knitting needles are shit for the wool she had at hand but it will do for now, good enough to learn at least. And then she ran an errand the very next day and gave me some bulky as hell soft wool that has like.. the same feels as those soft synthetic cuddly blankets you can buy almost everywhere, so, perfect for me. And my first own knitting needles to go with that. And I showed her my test piece and how I slowly get a hang of it and she nodded in approval and praised how even my rows are getting and that made my brain go brr.
Tumblr media
And one day after I did go into the city and hit up the store next to the train station and went a bit wild on buying wool - which is a theme for the next couple of days to be honest. I bought a lot of wool because I really wanted to have everything in house when I go wild. And thus I started on my first real project. A scarf that is more like a shawl because I really really misjudged how broad the bulky soft wool makes the thing. But more on that later I guess <3

Of course I have some Eddie for my dear friend @fandom-princess-forevermore under the cut.
Tumblr media
A: Aftercare, B: Body Part, E: Experience, F: Favourite Position, I: Intimacy, K: Kink, N: No and W: Wild Card
A: Aftercare; what they're like after sex.
Eddie would like to be the perfect gentleman, he really, truly would, but he has just put everything he had into what you just did and you're lucky if he has enough energy to roll off you. In his head, he would help you clean up, whisper sweet nothings, tell you how wonderful you are and how amazing what you just did was, but the reality is him just pulling you close and mumbling incoherent sounds as he drifts off to sleep.
B: Body Part; their favourite body part of theirs and also their partner's.
Although he quite likes his hair, Eddie's favourite body part is his fingers. They are expressive and dexterous and he can play you almost as well as he can play his guitar. Yeah, he is incredibly proud of what his expert fingers can accomplish.
When asked what his favourite body part of his significant other's is, he will grin cheekily and say 'have you seen that ass'? But in reality, he thinks the best bit about you is your lips. You can make him weak with just a smile, can make him ache with a soft pout. His gaze often lands on your lips and sends his mind racing to create a whole load of incredibly filthy scenarios.
E: Experience; how experienced are they? Do they know what they are doing?
What this boy lacks in experience he makes up with enthusiasm. He may not have had many sexual partners, but he is a kinaesthetic learner so he takes every opportunity to get some practical experience in. He takes his time to plot out what gives you the most pleasure with the precision of one of his DnD campaigns and boy does that attention to detail pay off.
F: Favourite Position; this goes without saying.
Eddie is absolutely feral for you on top. In this position his hands are free to explore your body and being able to look up and watch you take charge, knowing you want this as much as he does, it blows his mind. There are times he still can't believe you are with him, so being able to take you in from this position is like a dream come true each and every time.
I: Intimacy; how are they during the moment? the romantic aspect.
The only time this boy breaks eye-contact is when his lips are trailing over your skin. He is a hopeless romantic and that side of him definitely comes out when he is between your thighs and buried deep inside you. Holding your hip with one hand as his other caresses your thigh, his forehead pressed to yours, his gaze a little cross-eyed due to the close proximity as the tip of his nose grazes yours, soft, sweet words of adoration falling from him as he makes sure you are enjoying this as much as he is. Eddie really is so soft for you in all the best ways.
K: Kink; one or more of their kinks.
Eddie is definitely down for a bit of roleplay. He is a dramatic fuck anyway, but if you showed up dressed as an elven princess, asking to be rescued by the big brave hero, well... honestly he is gonna be lost for words and then have a mad scramble to get into character, but the idea that the two of you would end up together in alternate universes where you were the Arwen to his Aragorn, that really gets him in a way nothing else does.
N: No; something they wouldn't do, turn offs.
Pain is a nope, he's also not keen on degradation. The poor boy has been through some shit in his life and the last thing he wants in an intimate moment of passion between the two of you, is a flashback to some childhood trauma he's managed to keep buried.
W: Wild Card; a random headcanon for the character.
It takes a while before Eddie finally seals the deal. It isn't that he doesn't want to, hell no! It's that he wants it to be special for you and, try as he might, he doesn't think his stained mattress in his uncle's trailer is the romantic setting you deserve. Neither is the back of his van. In fact, he spends quite a bit of time saving up so he can get a hotel room. Not some dingy motel room, no, he wants to really make the effort, even if that means waiting a little longer as he scrapes the money together.
