Hello from Mutant Sun Studios.... I'm getting sick of the Flucking winter! how about you?!  

Few updates from the Sun!

We Finished a couple of rad ass tunes for Dinged Up's new 7inch a few months back. I believe she is a split with a band from China called Low Bow.....so..... be on the look out for that Beast. Hopefully there will be a few copies floating around in the Good ol' USA for us.. right?

 Its always fun Recording just a few songs at a time.  Time doesn't seem to drag on and the end result is finish faster.. if that makes sense.  

 We put down all the music (drums, bass, guitars) on the Tascam 8 track. Then we bounced all that down to Protools and finished up the vocals digitally .  This allowed us to use a few tracks for backing vox and for doubling the mains.  Joey likes em doubled!  It makes him feel less lonely ;) he originally wanted dinged up to be an  A Capella duet . Kidding.  

Lets see what else?

Oh! The Flying Faders !  

 All Recording and most of the mixing is finally finished for that piece.  

I'm Diggin it too! Right now the Band is just taking a listen to the final mixes and making sure there are no changed before its takin to the Mastering studio.  

 Mike could not sit in for a good chunk of  this recording , so we had our good Friend Brad killertimes come and sit in as Ass. Engineer(my favorite position in a studio was always "ass engineer" hehe).  and OH did we have a good time!! Lots of beer and mexican food if i remember correctly   

I think we knock this thing out mostly in one weekend.  Most tracks layed down LIVE! 

 See The Flying Faders are a surfy kinda band so we liked that roomy sound you can achieve with only minimal separation of the Mics.  I will have to grab some pics from Brad and put em up soon .  

 Two mics on the drums: 1 Shure e609 dyno for the overhead pointed at the snare and adjusted a bit to get the toms and cymbols in there.  

                                       1 AKG D 112 dyno up in the kick drum a tad. Took front head off and put it up in there just enough to minimize bleeding and get a nice attack.   

 And I know what your thinking! No Stereo drums?!  

Well  see we had a condenser Room Mic stuck in the stairwell that picked up a good amount of highs from the kit and we went ahead an used that to spread those drums out in the mix a bit..  Sounds Great too.  Stair Mic was Brad's Idea too!  

I took some Ideas from a few Beatles recording Pics I saw for the guitars.  In those Pics the guitar amps were all mic'd on a 45 degree angle. So I tried it and I think the guitars turned out sounding very up front and clear.  I wonder if this technique helps keep down distortion in the mic diaphragm?  tell me if you know.

 So we picked a Senn 421 for The Fender Bassman guitar amp and another Shure e609  for the Fender hotrod deluxe .  

  The Deluxe was easy to mic, since it only has a single 12" speaker in there.  We did a 45 degree angle pointed a little off center and about 5 inches from grill. The Bassman is a 4x10". I just let him play and i put my ear to each speaker and picked the one I thought sounded best.  I was actually really surprised how different each one sounded from the others. I chose the top right cone and again did the 45 degrees and about 5 inched from grill cloth.  

 I'm sure there were a few small adjustments for these guitar mics, but i think it went pretty smooth.

  For the Bass Guitar I went ahead and decided to try my AKG c214. This is the microphone i use primarily for vocals here in the studio, but i wanted to try it and we got great result. 

The bass amp was pretty close to the drum kit so we put a cubicle wall or two between the them to help with bleedage . That mic was about a foot from speaker give or take a few inches.  There was a good amount of adjustments with this set up.  But if you're doing any recording you will probably know that recording bass is a bit tricky at times.
