Bizarro world

Our kids in L.A. have given us a running commentary on the bizarre weather in “The Golden State” this winter  -  blizzard warnings, relentless rain, flash floods, sustained cold snaps atmospheric rivers, hurricane-force winds ... everything sunny California is not supposed to have.

 Now ... a tornado.

The National Weather Service confirmed that on Wednesday a twister described as an “intense microcell” touched down just southeast of L.A., wrecking 17 buildings and injuring at least one person.

I keep telling the kids that if they get tired of all that unpleasant weather. Michigan’s arms are always open to them.

Fire alarm

Even before we got out of bed Wednesday the text messages were waiting for us: “Are your kids in California OK …?” Similar inquiries trickled in all morning.

We quickly learned the reason for the concern: Wildfires in Los Angeles County, driven by drought and the strongest Santa Ana winds in a decade, were burning out of control.

Of particular concern to our kids was the blaze that ignited in Eaton Canyon, which was creeping uncomfortably close to the neighborhood where they live.

As of Wednesday night, they weren’t yet under a mandatory-evacuation order, but daughter Caitlin reported that the world outside her front door smelled like a bonfire. Ash, she said, fell from the sky like snow.

She said they had two cat carriers ready to go, just in case.
