Today is world kidney day, to globally raise awareness for chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health problem with adverse outcomes of kidney failure and premature death. CKD affects approximately 195 million women worldwide and it is currently the 8th leading cause of death in women, with close to 600,000 deaths each year. I’m one of those 195 million, I was treated for kidney cancer many years ago but because of it I developed Fanconi syndrome. Fanconi syndrome is a rare disorder of kidney tubule function that results in excess amounts of glucose, bicarbonate, phosphates (phosphorus salts), uric acid, potassium, and certain amino acids being excreted in the urine. For me the biggest problem is getting my phosphate and potassium levels at normal levels. I’ve had over 30 hospitalizations the last 3 years because my levels were dangerously low. This week at work hasn’t been too terrible.  I’ve been feeling like I’m in a rut lately but this week has been ok.  It makes me re-think the whole idea about taking a break from work.  I’d like to look for more opportunities but I’m not stressed out about finding something new.  I guess there are times where you hate your job.  And with all things going on the fatigue makes me cranky.  

But like I said I’ve had a pretty good week.  And it was my long week!  So it’ll be nice to have a short week.  

I’ve been following kidneybuzz.com of facebook.  They offer a lot of information about kidney failure.  Sometimes I think there is too much but it has definitely been nice to commiserate with others that are going through the same thing.  It’s been nice to offer answers to others, or share some of my own personal experiences.  it really does help to talk about it.  I wish I had decided to talk about my experiences earlier on.  Maybe I would have been less cranky these last couple of years.

Tomorrow is my 31st birthday... a birthday that for awhile there I don’t think anyone expected me to make. But here I am, still fighting, still struggling for each and every foothold, and still here. Not that there haven’t been days I wanted to give up, days, weeks even, that I wanted to throw the towel in. Days when I couldn’t even roll over in bed, days where I had to relearn to walk, where my greatest achievement was moving from the hospital bed to the chair. Sometimes I’m still not sure how I got from there to here, especially when you realize you're only at mile one of the marathon. Your ability to get through it as it gets harder, that is a hundred times more powerful than slapping a smile on your face and pretending like everything's just fine. Yes, this year has been one for the record books, but I have a lot to be thankful for this birthday. Side note, take care of your kidneys, you never know when you might need them! Also, if you are waiting for me to say this next year will be the best of my life. Stop waiting. I’m not saying it. Last time I did I died. Boo... I need good luck dust not just sprinkled but thrown my way! ✨✨ I’ve had issues all week with my catheter for dialysis but today it got so bad they had to stop my treatment while they pulled blood clot after blood clot out of it. This is with me on the medication to help out since blood clots seem to love me. They injected my catheter with a medication meant to help clear the line and will attempt to run my full dialysis tomorrow at 11. Fingers crossed this will work, if it doesn’t the plan will revert back to tossing me back in jail (my loving nickname for the hospital). 😂 My birthday is on Thursday and all the times I’ve been hospitalized with clot issues I’ve always had to stay at least a week. I literally can’t explain to you how angry I will be if after everything I have to sit in a hospital room on my birthday, also we were planning a trip up to my parents to celebrate my dad’s birthday.
