Actual plots to some of the children’s stories written by my mom:
Children's books:
A boy has an angel that lives in his nose. Whenever grownups scold him for picking his nose he explains he’s tickling the angel, but no grownups believe him. One day at recess, he finds out other kids have angels in their noses and during a birthday party they let the angels have their own party in a matchbox. (Mora um anjo no meu nariz; An Angel Lives in My Nose)
A boy has a mom who’s an elephant who lives in a mall. (Minha mãe, a elefanta; My Mother, the Elephant)
When a boy’s horse gets progressively sicker, he finds out (via another horse who comes out of his sister’s closet) that the princess of the Amazons has been stealing horse’s souls. So they go through the closet to save the horses. (Marcha Soldado, cabeça de Miguel)
A boy lives in a town where no one can leave, because any road that is built is eaten by the mountains surrounding the town. Then one day the town’s official Crazy Person™ comes up with an idea of how the boy can leave: they’ll hatch an airplane egg. (Ovo de avião; Airplane Egg)
A girl who was found seemingly abandoned in a cave as a baby wonders about who her biological family was. She finds out that they were witches fleeing persecution in Europe and her senile grandma forgot where she hid the cocoon where the girl was (which is how witch babies are made) was, which is why the cocoon was left in a cave. (O livro mágico da bruxinha Nicolau; The Magic Book of the Little Witch Nicolau)
A group of kids in the pediatric unit of a hospital are visited every night by a tiny circus floating on a cloud. One night there’s a contest for the bravest person in the world and their nurse shows up in the tiny circus and claims “her” kids are the bravest and they win the contest. (O menor espetáculo da Terra; The Smallest Show on Earth)
A boy who has to wear an eyepatch to correct his lazy eye is actually secretly a pirate and the eyepatch gives him x-ray vision. (Caolho, o pirata; Lazy Eye, the Pirate)
A movie script:
A Krenak girl ventures into a cave without end with the help of a talking snake in search of the greatest treasure in the world while learning about her people's history; it turns out the greatest treasure is... her. (Erehé Krenak, available on youtube in Portuguese)
And then there's the one for teens:
A teen has to deal with the aftermath of her crush committing suicide (Tiro no escuro; A Shot in the Dark)

FULL REVIEW: Viktor is just starting seventh grade in his small town, Nowhere, and he’s a little worried about being left behind when his best and only friend, Damon, starts hanging out with other kids from school. But Viktor’s in luck when a new girl, Alys, moves in across the street, and what begins as a crush on her soon turns into a friendship. That pleasant development, however, is marred by some really weird things happening at home: Viktor’s dad comes home with blood on his mouth and clothes, and Viktor later sees him having a secret meeting in a cemetery. Victor suspects his dad might be a vampire, but he’s unsure if reading Dracula for a class assignment or his continuous playing of vampire video games might be clouding his judgment. He makes it his mission to figure out what his dad’s up to, and unfortunately, it turns out his father isn’t the only person with secrets. From scheming with friends new and old, finding trustworthy adults, and working through friendship hiccups, Viktor learns that quality over quantity applies to relationships and that cultivating and maintaining connections involves all parties putting in effort. Classic horror elements abound, and the stakes feel high even with a fairly idyllic setting and most of the spookiness saved until the end. While the story tends toward being overly descriptive, and the lessons are a tad didactic, burgeoning horror fans and those looking for a scare with just a little bite will find this the perfect read for the Halloween season.

I'm looking for fairly priced commissioned illustrators
I know I'm not super active on here much anymore, but I'm a busy little woman. (AKA a massive ADHD headcase who has 40 different projects going on that take up most of my time now)
Last year I wrote a children's book. I was going to publish it and it was 4 pages too short. Which is probably good for me, because it was a spur of the moment thing that I did in 2 months. I have the ideas for the 4 pages on sticky notes and I just have to finish up the wording.
I thought I was going to be great at doing illustrations on my laptop because it was touch screen and I'm fine at other art mediums. Turns out I'm only good at pen and paper drawings. Like - seriously - huge props to everyone that does digital art.
But I'm looking for someone to illustrate this 32 page children's book for me and let me buy the rights to your artwork. I don't expect this book to be a best seller, I don't expect this book to cost much once it's in print. Truth be told - I wrote this book for a friend as a halfway joke/to be encouraging for them, but I think it's actually good enough to be published. It would give me something to add to my small list of big accomplishments and I'd love to have an actual published book because it's been on my bucket list since 2016.
I'm going to be extremely transparent here. I'm new to all of this. I am not necessarily mad at my art work seeing as it was the first time I've tried digital art, but it could be better. I love the cover, the inside cover pages (they're the same drawing), and the dedication page. If I could find someone who could just take my artwork and redefine it, that would be ideal. I assume fine tuning someone's pre-existing work would be cheaper. This book means a lot to me, but I don't even make a living wage. I can pay someone between $200 and $250 to help me make this dream a reality. I know it's not really a lot of money for something this big, and it's likely a pipe dream - but I have to at least try to find someone who might want to help me out.
I would absolutely and very obviously add your name to the book as the illustrator. Again, since I'm not expecting this to be huge, I don't expect to have any/much profit from it - which is why I'm hoping to buy the rights to your artwork.
If anyone would be willing and is serious about this:
I will send you the book in it's current form and the extra pages I'm looking to add.
I'd love to look at your 'portfolio' to see if your art work is what I have in mind. If you decide going the route of changing my artwork a little is better, I'd love to see a sample of how you would change it.
I'll send you some form of communication other than Tumblr once we establish it's a good fit, because I don't get on here a ton! Likely an email address or my google information so we can share stuff more easily.
If you're into it and my monetary budget isn't enough - I can cross stitch, I have a few Squishmallows, I have a lot of mini brands, and I have a lot of starter Pokémon cards that I'd absolutely be willing to send to you as well.
TLDR: I'm looking for someone to illustrate/help illustrate a 32 page children's book that is a passion project of mine. I can offer between $200 and $250, plus some other collectable items I have at my house or a handmade cross stitch project (or all of the above). I'd love to buy the rights to your artwork and I'm happy to send what I have for the book so far if you're truly interested in helping me with this. I'd love to have reference art from you to make sure it's what I'm looking for!

Brazilian authors to add to your collection
Sometimes it’s hard to know which authors/books are considered good when buying material for a language you don’t speak, so here’s a quick cheat-sheet of some quality Lusophone authors whose work is recognized as being some of the best of the best.
NOTE: If you’re building up a collection of materials in Portuguese, be aware that while Brazilian, European, and African Portuguese are completely understandable to one another, the dialect differences are noticeable enough that you might want to focus your material mainly on whatever dialect your community speaks, as it’d be kind of like buying only material in British English for an American audience or something of the sort.
These are authors who write in Brazilian Portuguese specifically.
Rita Espeschit
Tumblr media
Also known for her work as a journalist, poet, playwright, lexicographer, and a writer of children’s textbooks. She has won  the highest Brazilian literary award (Prêmio Jabutí) for her work in children’s literature.
Her works often feature zany and silly situations, such as an angel who lives inside a little boy’s nose, a boy who hatches an airplane egg, a horse that lives inside a little girl’s closet, and a boy whose mother is literally an elephant (which happens to live inside a shopping mall).

No adult writer should communicate with a minor without the parents' knowledge and consent.
This is makes my skin crawl.
From children's author Rachel Rooney on X.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm a professional Kidlit author and illustrator, and my policy is to never speak with children. Period.
I don't even want to see communications sent to me through my publisher.
I know authors who used to be very close with the kids in their book signing audiences, having the kids come up and give them a hug or even a kiss on the cheek. The tenor of the times has changed drastically. Authors now have kids confessing deeply personal things to them, saying not even their parents know. Because children see that being victims or declaring they're changing their sex gets them positive attention, from classmates, from the school counselor and sometimes from the school or family doctor. They want the author's approval, so they "out" themselves and wait to be praised and applauded.
Kids are more needy and screwed up at younger ages these days, and authors like those quoted above are participating in the delusions the child has either chosen for her or himself, or had imposed upon them by Munchausen By Proxy parents/carers.
I've heard from authors who tried to extricate themselves from such situations, only to have the minor become upset and angry. And even in one circumstance accusatory.
I'm not keen on kids anyway (a lot of kidlit authors aren't, it's nothing new). And while I appreciate any kid who reads something I wrote and enjoys it, that's as much of an exchange as I want with them.
Because the world of KidLit I knew 30 years ago no longer exists, even in spirit. It's all gone insane.
