Remember when I said that I'm going to be self indulgent in May and then I posted nothing about kid vs kat? This was why

For the longest time, I wanted to play a kid vs kat game.

This entire video is basically what I would love to play.

Kid vs Kat: The new rivalry, is a 3D game based on Sly Cooper and Spyro, where you can customize and play as either a Kid or a Kat. The game is split between these two campaigns however there would also be an optional co-op mode, where one player plays as the kid and the other as the kat. The two would then compete against each other during missions.

The game would be mostly an open-world game. Out of missions, you’ll be able to freely explore all of bootsville and the surrounding forest. Shop For Weapons, parts, and health Items. You can also find easter eggs and find items to decorate your base and character. Also, if you’re in co-op there are minigames and pranks that you can pull on each other for fun.

Customization is there to add a bit of depth. You can choose what your kid, kat, sibling, and parent look like. (In co-op, Kid decides what the parent looks like and Kat decides what the sibling looks like.) You can pick your outfit, pronouns, and what color your room is. There’s no benefit to this, it’s all for fun.

In missions, the world is restricted to where the mission takes place. In single-player, the player must win during the mission but in co-op, the endings change depending on which character wins, furthering the rivalry. Their length varies from 10 minutes to an hour the more difficult the mission. You are also able to replay any mission after beating them.

Kid vs Kat: The Kid’s New Neighbor is the Kid’s side. 

You start off spending the day in your school. It's your last day before you officially move. This day acts as a tutorial. Your two best friends are moving with you so you decide to spend the last day together. You attend gym class (Movement), art class, (Crafting), lunch(stealth), and recess(combat).

The second part of the tutorial starts here. You move into your new home, your sibling adopts a weird cat, your friends haven’t arrived yet so go to your new room and unpack your belongings. After that you go outside and meet Coop and find out that the weird cat is an alien! To learn more you stalk the new cat. You find them crafting a weird machine and while they leave to grab more materials, you head in and break the machine! The Kat isn’t happy and they attack you! Defend yourself from the Kat!

Kid vs Kat: The Kat’s New Apprentice is the Kat’s side. 

You start off spending your last day of the academy with your kittenhood friends. They’re changing careers but you decide to follow in your hero’s pawsteps and are going to be made his apprentice once you graduate. Your final assessment is now and you complete your agility test(Movement), robotics test(Crafting), stealth test, and physical test(combat).

The second part of the tutorial starts here. You travel to Earth and meet with your new mentor and he helps you get adopted by the new family in town. You don’t start training until tomorrow so Mr.Kat lets you build a communicator to talk to your friends back home. It’s almost done and you go to get more supplies. When you come back, you see Kid destroying your device! Make sure to teach that Kid a lesson!

After the tutorial, you’re free to explore or go into your room and start the various missions the game provides. Just like in the show, there’s also a love interest. Like how Mr.Kat likes Dr.Kat, you can pick between your two friends to romance, or you can just remain friends. When you get close enough to them, you can have them accompany you in missions as extra hands and they’ll help you fight and do tasks.

Yeah he really is just some guy. He's the only athlete really in his family. One of his older sisters ran track in high school, but otherwise their family is full of musician. Dad is a middle school orchestra teacher, mom is a music professor, his sisters all went into the arts. He can play a, quite frankly, ridiculous amount of instruments and he enjoys them all but he's not particularly passionate about it.

His parents signed him up for little league exy because he saw exy on the tv once and wouldn't shut up about it/was begging them to play. His parents just wanted all of their kids to be happy so they caved very quickly and Ilya developed an intense passion for the sport that obviously never went away.

Ilya's oldest sister (Liliya) is 7 years older than him, the other one 4 years older (Kateryna or just Kat), and the sister after (Tanya) that only a year and a half older. They're all incredibly close despite any age gaps while also very much having a dynamic of lovingly bullying each other

Ilya kind of always knew he was trans and they were always in a safe space to express it. His parents used to joke that they had "3 girls and an Ilya" and they didn't even bat an eye when as a kid he went straight for the "boys clothes" and asked to be called a prince instead of a princess and only responded to being called a boy. At school it was different, in elementary school other kids didn't care but the teachers could be weird about it, and then as a teen other kids started getting mean about it. But his parents and their sisters were always accepting and they filled their house with enough love that Ilya never thought about being closeted or pretending to be someone he wasn't.

He gets recruited to Penn State's team as their starting goalkeeper as an openly trans athlete. His team's respectful for the most part. There are some people who just don't seem to get it, but they're never outright rude or transphobic to him. There are sometimes snide remarks and something Not Cool said on accident and Ilya is always quick to correct it and most of his teammates are decent enough to apologize and try to do better

And he talks A Lot about being a trans and generally queer athlete. He's happy to be one of those people out and proud for everyone who can't be. Ilya has always, unapologetically, taken up space. Not even focused on his queerness, just in the way he exists as a person. If he's in a room you're going to know he's there and you're probably going to know their every thought as well.

They care a lot and they take everything to heart. They're very much a "don't cry cause you'll make me cry" type of person. He's much more willing to take on people's pain and share their burdens than he probably should be.

And he has zero filter. While he's absolutely paving the way as a queer athlete and he has a lot to say to the press about that his press time also has to be limited because he will just say shit. He has insulted other teams, insulted specific players, shared information that he definitely shouldn't have, said "fuck" on camera too often to keep count, and a lot more. He is keeping the Penn State vs Edgar Allan Ravens twitter discourse alive and well with all the shit that comes out of his mouth

He makes his best friend his junior year. She's a sophomore named Alice and she's a defensive dealer. Her sophomore year she comes as trans, MTF, and Ilya is the first person she tells becuase he's one of the only queer people she knows. After that they're pretty much attached at the hip and Ilya would kill and die for her. Her family isn't super accepting so he takes her home with him for the holidays. His family becomes hers and they're more than happy to add one more girl to the family.

Ilya makes court right after he graduates and it's with Jude, Em, Mara, Florian. you know the drill at this point. They're the ones I never shut up about. And I think I'll largely be repeating myself and I don't want to be annoying with that so we'll stop there

Some other fun things about Ilya though:

he never learned how to ride a bike. he will never ride a bike. fuck no (he fell over and scraped his knee once and despite all the balls to the head playing exy that was his breaking point for some reason and he never got on a bike again)

he's a cat person

he teaches Florian ASL and it's the main they talk to each other cause Florian likes to go nonverbal

they were such a huge fan of Jude it took everything in them to not be starstruck when the two first met

the two instruments they stuck with were the violin and the piano

they have an addiction to strawberries

is almost always playing jazz music on a vinyl when they're home/have people over

he has a shitty autograph and Flor has begged him to "get better handwriting" since he signs so much stuff but he's fine with it being an unreadable disaster (Florian's autograph in comparison is gorgeous)

he is an unapologetic foxes stan after they win finals

ftr I loved the return, namely for the kim content, but am I alone in feeling like Olivia's role basically being morpher delivery girl after all the months of build up is a bit of a letdown. like everyone was excited for the tomberly daughter green ranger before the comic said anyway thanks for saving us now immediately give back the dragon coin in favour of an approved Girl Coin That's Way More Your Colour. I feel like I came to this series for her and barely saw her 😅

This is an interesting critique because while I would definitely say Olivia's reveal was the thing that got people talking about The Return after the initial novelty of "the original Pink Ranger is writing a Power Rangers story" wore off, the premise was always meant to be Amy's contribution to the 30 year anniversary; centered on the actual MMPRs and their lives thirty years after this traumatic event and coming back to finish things once and for all, not Olivia. And you guys know I love her more than anything but that was ultimately for the best, I think.

Thinking back to Once and Always, Minh is absolutely the best thing about the special because she had the most depth and was the emotional core of the whole thing, but that's kind of.....not great? For a special supposedly meant to celebrate the classic characters and concepts from thirty years ago giving all of the good material and focus to a completely new character? It's why there was so much discourse about Simon and BeccAlwyn not being the right ones to work on such a special; because they're great with their original concepts but don't really understand the classic ones beyond "hey! Mantis Style was a thing Trini did in the original show, right? idk what she's done with her life in the thirty-year-timespan or even how Minh came into existence or what she thinks about being a Ranger while being a parent. But I know she was scared of heights!"

The Return makes better use of the actual show characters and treats them like people beyond what you can read about them on the wiki and that's why it's a far more successful 30 year anniversary celebration. I don't think it would have if it went the OaA route and made it all about the OC kid we only just met. Especially when BOOM giving their OCs more and more priority these days is starting to get noticed and criticized by fandom.

As for your second bit I think implying that Olivia ended up getting the Pterodactyl Coin because that's the Girl Color is a bit unfair? Like first of all Olivia getting Pink was ALSO part of the early drafts. Second of all it makes sense for the narrative presented about Kim's trauma and attitude toward Rangerhood that she feels she needs to step back and let someone else take over vs how the Green powers are the only stable thing in Tommy's life after he was gone for twenty years. (I know the theory of him getting White was tossed around but if we're being real idk how that would have happened outside of "well Tommy was White in the og show, so......") Third of all I just like that Olivia has now had her hand in both parents' legacies. The fact that Tommy and Kim are BOTH important to Olivia's character is one of the best parts about her, versus how JJ was all about Tommy with Kat being inconsequential and Minh's dad never being considered at all. (I do hope being pink means she won't ditch her jacket though. It's already an iconic design.)

In the end while I am hoping and praying we'll get a sequel because Olivia will absolutely be the focus character then - going back to the early drafts again, she WAS the main protagonist there! - I think she got enough personality and presence that I'm very happy with what we got. I like that she wasn't immediately a pro with the powers and was mature enough to know she had to hand them off to someone more qualified but at the same time had notable contributions of killing Finster and bringing back Tommy in the first place. I like how she and Kim clearly love each other more than anything. I like that she's canonically kind of stupid just like we hoped. I like that she wears tops that are way too big for her. she's just like me fr

The shows and franchises of Evelow

I was recently thinking about some of my OCs being more fantasy nerdy vs scifi nerdy and it got me thinking about what type of genres and media your main OCs might like? for one, just in general scifi shows or horror movies or long fantasy books. But I was also thinking, with your own world its not as easy to say they the big obvious genre staples like LOTR or Star Trek for example... but does your world have similar Really Popular things like that.

Things like: Is there a really long running tv series thats had multiple iterations, like star trek that any of your OCs grew up with and have Big Opinions on? Fantasy epic multiple movies 3 hours each to tell the story? Would any of your OCs enjoy binging that over a long weekend for fun?

Thank you for the question !! I was going to make more faux posters of some shows that could exist in Evelow, but I'd rather just go ahead and talk about the topic. More could come in the future, we'll see. I'll also add in the character opinions. (sorry in advance if this gets long.)

So Evelow doesn't have the huge library of stories that we have. Mostly due to limitations, as Evelow's shows and movies are filmed in Evelow, and though it's a big civilization, it's not quite the same scope our present day world has. They'll have maybe one or two blockbusters a year, while most movies are indie or low budget. TV shows, however, are given more budget. Though there's not really enough on the screen for characters to be too picky in their genres, so I'll just present some vague ones.

Here are some popular shows/franchises:

Paranormal Paradise

Brother and Sister duo are on a secret unit that deal with the unexplained or the paranormal, as the title suggests. Pair that with sunsets and synth wave music, and you have a show that's currently on their third season.

This one is fairly popular with Evelonians. Out of my ocs, Kat thinks it's fun and while she's "team Una" (the name of the sister character), she finds the monsters designs the best part of the show. Cora thinks she's ridiculous, as she's "definitely team Kotori" (the brother.)

Kat eventually gets Morgan into it, but Morgan isn't the least bit interested in the "fandom" aspects, like head canons or introducing more recurring characters.

The show isn't really considered nerdy, but it's a popular one.

Feast of Legacies

This one is older in relevance to the current timeline, probably aired when my characters were kids and thus has more impact. (though probably not "age appropriate", kids still liked the fun outfits and action scenes) It was a dark fantasy show about a barbaric bounty hunter that was super campy and violent.

Future spin offs have since grew with the times or made things more serious, and those can be popular too. Ivar has even acted in one of the movies too, as a nod to his arena persona lol. Characters from the show come up a lot in halloween costumes and cosplays.

Morgan and Advik probably rewatch this one again as adults. "It still holds up, guys !"

I don't think space stories take up a lot of space (haha) in Evelow's culture, though there are some given that there are always going to be people fascinated by it, even if we don't know much !

They have a popular anthology show called "Planetary Politics" where each season involves a different planet and a story arc surrounding a different group of characters. The show can be experimental, with many seasons involving people in makeup and costumes, even a season fully animated (sorry they couldn't find any people who could successfully play the part of space jellyfish)

Advik and Ian used to watch this show together all the time, but since then Audrey has also taken a liking to it.

There's a good amount of horror movies roaming around Evelow, I'd say one of the biggest franchises is Tartar-us (Though the first movie that was released many years ago was called 'Under Deck')

It's campy, it's gory, and a staple in every horror enthusiast's library (except for the esteemed ones who think this franchise should have died a long time ago.)

(though looking at this makes me realize that outer space play enough of a role in pop culture to be featured in spinoffs in movies such as the 'pirates' franchise for kids.)

I want to give my characters at least one more fantasy genre to have in their world, but I'll come up with more ideas later. I also feel like I've barely answered the original question ??? So I'll at least do that with my main cast

Audrey didn't grow up with movies unless they were brought over from other cities. Her town of Dile mostly had theatre and books. She liked heroes journeys, or stories with fantastical elements.

Advik loves both fantasy and sci fi. I'd say he likes fantasy more since he's much pickier about his sci fi. (He doesn't like stuff that tries to play it like it could happen in the world. I think HE'D be one of the few people really into space stuff.)

Katsumi likes more grounded stories. She doesn't care about world building if the character writing is bad. She loves style, but not if it's devoid of anything else. Also, if she has to see inaccurate costume design one more time, she swears...

Zack prefers sci fi over fantasy, since the former leaves room for potential horror elements. (since that's his actual favorite genre.)

Avery prefers fantasy over sci fi, since the stories tend to be more conventional and the costume designs are better. (She's much less picky than Kat in that department.)

"What's the difference, they're all movies" - Morgan. (She hates labeling things into genres.)
