On a sunny day, what could be more refreshing than a romance that's as beautiful as it is simple? If you're looking for that kind of refreshment, then I highly recommend Behind Cut! Ki jin and Yeong woo will prove to you that love still exists and that there's nothing easier than falling in love. Like them, you could well find your soulmate on the run from an ex you met on a street corner life made you pick up for no reason.

Yeong Woo is a very positive, hard-working, and straightforward young man. He loves his life and puts his heart into everything he does, whether it's his work or caring for others. His radiant smile soon gets the better of Ki Jin, a promising apprentice designer who is putting all his energy into fulfilling his dream. As their paths cross, Ki Jin and Yeong Woo discover and accompany each other on their respective life journeys, both of which are turned completely upside down by the other. While Ki Jin sees it as a way of deepening his dream and sharing it with the person he loves, Yeong Woo sees it as a new, unknown path to discover, with no particular motivation other than his feelings for Ki Jin.

Between sweet romance and solid friendship despite the blunders, Behind Cut explores all the subjects of building relationships, trust, and discovering each other and oneself with a great deal of positivity. Despite some difficult moments, the well-written plot takes us down well-trodden paths with a unique twist. The highly engaging characters will make you lose all sense of time and plunge you into an everyday reality that will seem almost too real to be true. The excellent acting combined with the high-quality direction of this series makes it a must-see!

Behind Cut will take you back to the fragility of young people discovering themselves and love at the same time but without any of the frills. You'll be immersed in a daily life stripped of any excessive narration. Let yourself be lulled by the simple, pungent feelings of our protagonists, who experience both the pain and the sweetness of love. The only negative point: eight episodes are far too few to enjoy a story of this quality...

— and then her ending ment: “thank you so much for coming, darlings. i hope you get home safely and i hoped you enjoyed yourselves tonight. there are two more songs, so you can stop whining”

— then she sang the songs and the concert was over☹️

— everybody had so much fun though and all reviews were suuuuper positive :) from performance to hospitality, it was just amazing

Summary: You catch Kieran’s eye on a photo shoot while you’re interning at Arsenal.

When you accepted a position as photography assistant at Arsenal, you hadn't expected your duties to be so wildly different from the job posting. 

Instead of editing photos, you're editing coffee orders to ensure the staff are getting exactly what they asked for. You aren't compiling digital photo albums, you're compiling lunches. And instead of prepping social media posts, you're stuck pouring sugars into David's tea and blowing ripples onto the surface to ensure it's the perfect temperature for him to drink between shots. 

"Ugh, no- this has gone cold. Get me another please, and a black coffee for Tierney, he's in next."

While your boss isn't exactly the best, a job is a job and you need the steady paycheck. Besides, there's worse you could be doing, so in reality, fetching coffee like a dog with a bone isn't all that miserable. 

"Because you like making sure the boys feel at home?" You venture in an attempt to get something out of this experience. You haven't learned a lick about photography from your supposed mentor, but you're trying your damnedest to not waste any opportunity. 

David rolls his eyes and pops his hip to rest his fist on it. "Yes, obviously. He'll be here in ten minutes, so I'll finish up with Aaron quick and move on. Hurry up please!"

At least he says please, you think to yourself, pouring the unfit tea down the drain and heading towards the kitchen to attempt a second cup. You follow the strict instructions you were given on day one (sugar in the cup before the tea bag, steep for three minutes, light squeeze before discarding the bag, add another sugar and stir) before pouring a cup of fresh brewed dark roast in a disposable cup for Tierney. 

It hits you then, who you're about to meet, and you startle so abruptly that you nearly splash hot coffee onto your hand. Thankfully you recover before scalding yourself and save the embarrassment for another time. But god, Kieran Tierney in the flesh? No big deal, he's only been your football crush for ages now. You'll totally be fine meeting him. Won't fumble over your words at all, or trip over your own two feet and fall flat on your face, dump steaming hot coffee all over him, and have to flee the country. 

No pressure. 

Blowing out a deep breath, you grab both cups and paste an easy smile on your face for the short walk to the in-house studio. You use your bum to open the cracked door, focusing on not spilling and keeping your eyes locked on the cups as you navigate the maze of props, lights and minefield of wires strewn across the floor to find your way towards David, stealing glimpses of your newest guest as you go.

Kieran Tierney should be classed as the eighth wonder of the modern world. Under the pitch lights, he's a force to be reckoned with. Under photo lighting like this, he is ethereal, dressed in the blue and yellow tye dye special edition 'human race' kit that hugs tight to his chest and shoulders, showcasing his defined, muscular stature. And his laugh? Full and throaty, the sound rocks you to your core as you hear it in person for the first time. He laughs at a quip you're too far away to hear, though your attention is locked on him as you approach. 

You wait in the shadows, completely out of Kieran’s view while makeup touches him up. His chin is tipped towards the ceiling slightly and his eyes are closed while a woman dabs a brush across his cheekbones.

"I shouldn't need too much of that stuff, right? I canne stand when it gets in your mouth-" Kieran sputters, cutting himself off as some of the pinkish powder lands on his lips. The entire room laughs, though Kieran doesn't seem to mind at all.

"Nah, not too much. I mean, I'm amazing at what I do, but even I can't turn this-" She gestures to Kieran in an all encompassing gesture, "-into something pretty to look at. I can only do so much."

A lazy grin breaks across Kieran's face.  You’re glad you're standing still or else you'd certainly trip and make a fool of yourself. He's comfortable around these people, obviously having interacted with them enough times to know who he can handle a joke and who requires a no nonsense attitude. For a split second you envy that ease; you still don't feel like you fit in despite your best efforts. 

"Coffee, Kieran?" David flourishes a hand in your direction and you're slammed firmly back into the present. Drawing up the last of your confidence, you straighten your spine and smile at Kieran.

"I grabbed some just in case," you say, and that's what finally brings you to Kieran's attention.

Kieran's honey dipped brown eyes land on you and you aren't sure what to do. You're worse than a gazelle facing down a cheetah, frozen with fear and unable to move a single muscle. He's smiling that same charming smile you've seen plastered on social media for years. It seems genuine, unlike most footballers who have what you refer to as a photo smile and their real smile. Kieran's, from what you can tell, are one and the same.

"I'd love a coffee, thank you." If Kieran notices the way your hands shake, he's kind enough to keep that to himself and not point it out. You remain rooted to the spot. You're fully aware that your limbs should be moving, but there's some sort of disconnect between your brain and your legs. 

"Sorry, she's new. Still starstruck and all that I guess." David says your name and follows it up with a disappointed sigh, snatching his tea from your hand before lightly pushing you in Kieran's direction. 

Kieran's ridiculously handsome brown eyes remain locked on yours as you somehow find it within yourself to cross the ocean of space separating you that is also somehow only a few meters. What takes a few seconds feels like it lasts hours. Each step is like wading through waist-high molasses as time slows and Kieran's gaze is the only thing in the entire universe that matters. 

How do people do this so casually? Kieran is devouring you with your stare and you're not sure if you love it or hate it. It does buoy your confidence though, regardless of your undecided feelings. 

"Hello princess," Kieran murmurs when you're close, "what's your name?"

"My name?" You blurt before you can stop yourself. You grimace at the way your voice hitches up at the end, like an actor giving their first performance to a packed house. But surely Kieran is speaking to someone else. Even if his eyes haven't left yours once since he's spotted you. You're no princess, certainly not by any footballer's standards. 

Kieran chuckles, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees. "Yes, that's what I said. What's your name? I don't think we've met, I wouldn't forget a woman like you so easily."

You're dreaming, right? This isn't real. Because no way in hell has Kieran freaking Tierney noticed you in a room full of models ten times more attractive than you. He could have anyone in this room that he wanted, and yet he noticed you?

"I- uh… I'm new," you stammer before giving your name. "It's nice to meet you, I'm actually a huge fan of yours."

"Oh are you?" Now Kieran is intrigued. His grin grows as he gently takes his coffee from your frozen hand, taking a test sip before humming in appreciation. "Perfect, by the way. How did you know how I like my coffee, princess?"

"Oh uh, lucky guess?" Your laugh is stilted and awkward but somehow that doesn't seem to throw Kieran off. He laughs too, taking one more sip before handing the coffee back before smoothing out his shirt.

"Lucky guess indeed," he murmurs, tipping his head ever so slightly as your breath hitches in your throat. "Hold onto that for me, will you? After this photo shoot business is done, I think I'd like to talk to you. If you're alright with that of course?" 

You manage a nod, lips glued shut and throat tight with awe. Surprisingly, you manage to get out of David's way without catastrophically embarrassing yourself so he can begin posing Kieran and helping him settle in. You observe carefully as Kieran absorbs the critiques and uses them to showcase his best angles for each photo. If David refuses to teach you in the traditional sense, at least you can observe how to help players feel comfortable when down lense. 

Kieran is a natural in front of the camera. He takes no more than a few minutes to settle in and find his rhythm. Once in a while, Kieran glances over at you and smiles, as if glad to see you haven't run off. You aren't sure why, but your instinct is always to wave when his eyes find yours. Apparently he doesn't find it cringeworthy, much to your delight. Instead, he waves back with the same timidness as you each time. The innocence of it feels like flirting with a schoolyard crush, easy and open ended and free. You'll enjoy the fleeting attention while it lasts, because you're positive Kieran will forget you exist once he's returned to training a half hour from now. 

You also won't let the chance to admire Kieran up close pass you by. You study him whenever you can, fixating on the dusting of stubble along the angle of his jaw or the veins visible in his forearms for a few seconds at a time. You don't allow yourself to linger on any particular feature long enough for him to catch you. You simply take in all of him, little by little, until you're sure you've imprinted him in your mind and won't forget this moment. 

Much to your delight, when David thanks Kieran for his time, the Scotsman sticks around. He talks quietly with the stylist he'd joked with earlier, his eyes constantly flitting over her shoulder to find you. 

Don't move, is what the demand in Kieran's gaze says. Kieran's eyes are expressive, holding you hostage as he tries his best to politely exit conversations with various staff members as he slowly makes his way towards you. You keep yourself busy with tidying up props and restocking the beverage fridge, trying to make yourself useful enough that David doesn't suddenly remember you exist and request another cup of tea. 

When Kieran finally finds himself free, he hurries to join you on the outskirts of the set. His mischievous smile sends a fresh bout of confidence surging through your veins. Your nerves fade away in the blink of an eye; if Kieran is interested in you, even in passing, there must be something intriguing about you. 

"Hello again," Kieran says in an accent that is simultaneously rugged as snow-capped mountain peaks and warm as the salty summer sea. You nearly cave then and there, clamping down on your adoring sigh before it can pass your lips. His simple, two word greeting washes over you and fills you with a thrill that you haven't experienced since starting at Arsenal. Kieran has made you feel more at home in the blink of an eye than the entire staff has in two weeks.

"Hello, Kieran." You tell yourself that you aren't avoiding his smile because it makes your heart stutter, but because you need to make yourself productive by rearranging the fruit bowl. "Has anyone ever told you that you were born to be in front of a camera? You're quite good at it."

"Really? That's a relief to hear because I honestly hate media days. Although I'll admit, I hated today a little less." Kieran smiles when you pause and glance up at him. "Do you still have my coffee?" 

"Your coffee is cold but I'd be happy to show you where to grab another if you'd like a fresh cup." It's an olive branch, should he choose to accept it. You have no idea what his schedule is like, if he has time to agree to your invitation or not. Not once in your life have you been so upfront with a man. Honestly, you have no idea where the confidence comes from today, but fuck it. Not like he'll remember this anyway if he chooses to blow you off. 

The pleasant surprise that lights up Kieran’s face reminds you of a child watching a fireworks display. A camera flashes behind you to set sparks flitting through his irises and momentarily highlight the angel-kissed freckles spotted across his cheeks. The orange in your hand thumps to the table and rolls off, caught as you are in his beauty. 

"You mean that yeah? Because I dinnae how you read my mind, but I was just about to ask if you'd have the time to get a cup with me later."

You silently thank the stars, the heavens, whoever is responsible for the planets aligning and granting you this opportunity. You swear not to waste it. 

"Absolutely I would. You know where to find me when you're done for the day." You flourish a hand to encompass the set, knowing you won't be leaving until much later in the evening. 

"Yeah that works, I've got to finish up training anyway. I'll come by when I'm done. That's a promise, princess." Kieran grins, quickly looking you up and down before turning on his heel to return to training. His exit is a bit abrupt but you don't mind, as it leaves plenty of unanswered questions on either end that you're eager to have answered. 

"Intern!" David calls. "Quit gawking and get me my tea!"

And that's reality, shattering your good mood. At least you have a coffee date with a handsome, brown haired, brown eyed, knock-you-off-your-feet gorgeous man to look forward to.

Boys Planet, Post Episode 8 Analysis: What Next for the Eliminated Trainees? 

In this post, I’ll give you the full analysis of the Korean vs. Global vote for the top 30. Then I’ll tell you the ranking of the eliminated trainees (ranked 29 through 51), and I’ll discuss what I think will happen next for each of the eliminated trainees! I also found a few last notes from eliminated trainees posted on social media that I can share with you. It’s kind of interesting that the Korean population really likes Wang Zi Hao, but is comparatively cold towards Keita, Jay, and especially Haruto. Given the way that the show works, it’s more important to have Korean support than global support, so expect Wang Zi Hao to have a decent chance at making the Top9 at the end, and brace yourself to lose Keita, Jay, and Haruto. I know, I’m bummed too.

It’s also kind of interesting that if the Korean population was in charge, the two “evil edited” trainees, Ma Jing Xiang and Zhang Shuai Bo, would be much higher ranked, and in fact, MJX would have survived this elimination. You’d think that the sinophobia that MNET manifests again and again would influence Korean voters, but it doesn’t seem to. 

And here is the inverse -- the top 30 as it would be if only Global votes counted (again, no benefits). Again, the number after the trainees’ names is their real rank. Particularly noteworthy differences are marked in bold.

Obviously, just that top 4 is interesting -- Zhang Hao in number 1, and Sung Hanbin sinking to 4th place behind Keita and Matthew. It’s also kind of interesting how the international community doesn’t seem to be super into Kim TaeRae, my little cousin, Kum Jun Hyeon, or titanium voiced Yoo Seung Eon. This does suggest that if any of them make it into the final lineup, they may end up not as popular down the road, though who really knows -- I mean, did anyone see Chaewon from Iz*one ending up where she is now? Or Yunjin, who didn’t even make the Iz*one lineup? 

I think the varied support is actually kind of good news for a lot of the trainees -- if they don’t make the final lineup in Korea, they might be able to go a more ATEEZ/Everglow route of being popular globally, even if they’re not super popular in Korea. It’s still making a living through singing and dancing, and I think a lot of them would be glad for that. 

Eliminated Trainees: Final Ranking and What’s Next

I found that ranking online, and while I can't confirm it, it strikes me as accurate. Below, I'll discuss what I see ahead for the various eliminated trainees, including a few who were eliminated in the first cut. I got out my crystal ball and tarot cards and watched the crows outside for a while and then typed up what came into my head. Let's go!

The WakeOne trainees: Anthonny(32),  Mun Jung Hyun(29) and Oh Sung Min (35)

I’m optimistic for these trainees because WakeOne has a serious pool of talent on their hands. They sent ten trainees to the show, and we can hope that most of them will make it into the WakeOne group, which will be called, oh I don’t know, Won1One or something. 

Wakeone trainees Kim Tae Rae, Park Hanbin, and Haruto are both doing really well on the show, and seem to me quite likely to make it through the next cut. Lee Jeong Hyeon and Cha Woongki are a little lower ranked but are both getting noticed, in different ways.  Anthonny, Mun Jung Hyeon, and Oh Sung Min at least survived the first cut, and Anthonny and Mun both almost survived the second. And Anthonny had a lot of early support -- he was ranked 8th i the first episode. So he certainly got some viewer’s attention, even if their gaze strayed later on.

The two trainees who were cut in episode 5 are less certain to debut in Won1One, but it’s not impossible. Park Min Seok, who you may have forgotten, was the leader of the blighted K-leftovers team in Eps 3-4 and ended up shooting up in the rankings from 84 to 61. I think if the voting period had gone a little longer, he might have survived. Min, who you may also have forgotten, was chosen by Keita for the Kill This Love team, and I trust Keita’s assessment of him, so Min must have some skills -- but he wasn’t particularly popular, so he’s the one I’m most worried about seeing again. 🙁

It seems likely that at least one of TaeRae or Park Hanbin will make the final Bepler lineup, so if so, while he or they are performing with Bebler, I’m hopeful that Wakeone will be getting some songs ready to debut their team as soon as they’re done. I’m looking forward to seeing them all again. Won1one, fighting! 

The Yuehua trainees: Brian (37) and Ji YunSeo (41)

Yuehua sent eight trainees -- remember the two “Kick It” groups? Only Brian and Ji YunSeo have been eliminated; the other six --  Ollie, Ricky, Zhang Hao, Han Yu Jin, Kim Gyu Vin, and Yoo Seung Eon are all obviously doing pretty well on the show so far. I think it’s fair to say that at least two of those are going to make the final lineup (Hao + at least one of Yujin and Gyuvin), and I think Ricky is at least going to pass the next cut. SeungEon might as well, but Ollie probably won’t, in part because he jammed his smelly finger into the camera during the “Planet Camp” bit this episode and that will make viewers associate him with bad smells, subconsciously, and they won’t want to vote for him as much.

But regardless, Yuehua is 8 for 8 in terms of having trainees pass the first cut, and 6 for 8 in trainees passing the second, and that’s pretty good. I don’t see any reason for Yuehua not to debut a team of eight and call it, oh, I don’t know, Everboy, or Boyglow. No real reason to leave out Brian and Ji YunSeo. I mean, YunSeo was in that Backdoor team that performed on M-Countdown, and that video is still getting plenty of views -- so even though his popularity wasn’t super strong, he is going to continue to get exposure. He also is a really solid vocalist. And Brian is a cutie-pie who is also a native speaker of English. So I feel pretty good that Brian, YunSeo, and all the rest will land on their feet, just fine. Everboyglow, fighting! 

The houses: Bak Do Ha (46) and Jung Min Gyu (48)

Both of these trainees are actors. Mingyu (the red house) already been in some minor dramas and stuff, and DoHa (the blue house) was in this webseries with Jiwon from Cherry Bullet. I think both of them left a good impression in terms of their personality and looks -- Mingyu is a bit more lovable, and Doha is a bit more “sexy”, but I think both were likable, and that’s important. I neither think nor hope that either will debut as idols, but I think both will do well as actors, and that’s cool for them and us! K-dramas, fighting!

Krystian:

Krystian’s going to be fine, ya’ll. 

Check out his insta -- @krystianwang. I think the “I’M FREEEEE!!!!!” caption says it all. He also has a post with the Limousine performance with the caption “LIMOUSINE (R.I.P크리스티안)” - - that a R.I.P. for the Korean spelling of his name. He has another post with a selfie and the caption “No rush, no rush.” So yeah, I think he’s fine. 

My prediction? I think he’ll go more of a B.I. / Jackson Wang route of just making the music he likes and releasing it through Youtube. I hope he does, in fact. I don’t think he’s made to be a team player.

The other Chinese trainees: Cai Jin Xin, Chen Jian Yu, Ma Jing Xiang, and Wumuti 

I think Ma Jing Xiang will probably go into modeling. He’s 6’2 and 19 years old, and I just think modeling will be easier for him. I’m sure he’ll be fine! 

Cai Jin Xin is signed with an agency called TopClass, which also manages Xiaoting from Kep1er but not really anyone else. Like MJX, he’s also 6’2 and 19 years old. I think he’s demonstrated that he has a lot of trouble with both vocals and dancing, and I think he’ll end up going into modeling as well. 

Chen Jian Yu is a little bit of a different story. He seems really heart-set on becoming an idol -- he did Youth With You 3 before he came to Boys Planet. Problem is, though, that on his intake form he said that he is still looking for his specialty, and that seems to be the case, even though he’s 24. He’s signed with an agency called Star On Entertainment, about which I can find NOTHING online. So…  I don’t know what will happen for him. But it’s not like he was notably dreadful, but he missed his cue in the Star Level test, and made a few obvious dancing mistakes in the GGang performance. I wish him well, and it’s not impossible that he’ll eventually land on his feet, but I’m not super optimistic. 

Boys Planet was also the second survival show for Wumuti -- he participated in Under19, but he left the program right before the final episode citing “personal issues.” He did well there, and actually did pretty well here, finishing in 34th place. I think he has an amazing work ethic, as shown in the first hour of Episode 8. I bet he impressed all the industry people he met in those producer meetings, and maybe something good will come out of that. He’s devoted to this, and I don’t think he’s going to give up. Between his hard work, his sweet attitude, his charm, and his singing voice, I think he could find a place for himself. I’m not sure if China will embrace him, due to his status as an ethnic minority, but I hope so. Hey, go follow him on Insta! He’s @wumutit . He posted this note:

Chinese trainees, Jiayou!  加油!

The Vietnamese trainees: Cong (43) and Dang Hong Hai (42)

Vietnam is for sure into kpop -- when I was there a few years ago, I remember seeing a big billboard for GWSN (oh, GWSN! 🙁) -- but it absolutely does have its own music scene. I don’t know much about it -- I only know Love Charms by Bich Phuong, which is a complete BOP. I’m low key obsessed with it. If you listen to it and hate it, I will personally mail you some cheese crackers as an apology for having wasted your time. In any case, my point is that Vietnam is building its own music scene. Cong and DHH are both super popular in Vietnam, especially DHH, and if things don’t work out for them in Korea, I think they could easily make a good living as idols in Vietnam. DHH probably has a better shot -- he was more popular than Cong, and also is signed to Fantagio, while I don’t think Cong is signed at all. It’s not impossible that Fantagio will sign Cong and they’ll debut together. Fighting, guys! 

The wunderkinds: Park Ji Hoo(33) and Han SeoBin (60)

I always think about this moment in episode 1, when Hui stole the first chair seat from Park JiHoo. That’s all we knew about JiHoo then, that he had just gotten that seat. What did he do to get it? Knowing him like we do know, I bet he challenged whoever it was to a rap battle or something. Did we see whatever he did? Nope. 

I’m so glad we got to know him a bit more in later episodes. We also got a glimpse of his friend, Han Seobin, who seems to have earned the respect of the judges and trainees alike. 

I think JiHoo and SeoBin probably would have hated being on Bepler anyway. They’re signed to H1GHR MUSIC, which is where the judge pH1 is signed, among a bunch of rap artists I’d actually heard of, like Sik-K, and producers I actually recognize as well --  GroovyRoom and Woogie. Go make your own music, you teenage geniuses. I believe in you. 

The babies: Lee Da Eul(47), Lim Jun Seo (40), and Lee Dong Gun (51)

Lee Da Eul and Lim Jun Seo are both signed to 143 Entertainment, which is also home to iKON, as in, yes, that iKON, the one that used to be at YG. iKON moved there only a few months ago, when their contract expired at YG. So 143 must be doing something right. 

143 is also home to a small girl group called Limelight, which features MiU, a Japanese trainee who was eliminated from GP999 in the first round. Their song Eye to Eye isn’t terrible, by the way. And Lim Jun Seo is in the video, if that’s a draw for you? Also, it’s not impossible that Kang Yeseo and Mashiro will end up in that group when their term of service is done with Kepler.

So what I’m saying is that 143 Entertainmnet seems to be on the way up, and has demonstrated a willingness to debut groups relatively soon after their members leave reality shows, even if they don’t do stunningly well. 

I think people will forgive DaEul, because he’s a boy and boys get forgiven in Korea. And people always liked JunSeo just fine despite his obvious need for more training. So I predict that 143 Entertainment will put them in a group with one or two more boys -- maybe an ex Youth With You-3 trainee they dig up, or a few other lost lambs from LOUD or even Boys Planet -- and they’ll call it, oh I don’t know, BoyStage or something, and they’ll put out a pre-debut single that fuses trop house with both synth pop and yelling, and the video will get 1 million views over the course of 6 months. After that, my crystal ball goes dim. But fighting, boys! I wish you both well. 

As for Lee Dong Gun, he is apparently a member of a pre-debut group called Rare House, so he’s being managed, though who knows if anything will come of that. He’s really pretty, and a good dancer, and is still really young. His singing obviously needs a lot of work. He didn’t exactly thrive on this show, but he certainly had some fans. We’ll just see what the future holds for him. Fighting!

The Dongsaengs: Park Hyunbeen (48) and Choi Woo Jin (50)

Park Hyunbeen is signed to Jellyfish, along with General Gunwook and his two sergeants who he lost in episode 5,  Han Yu Seop (85) and Jang Yeo Jun (62). 

Choi WooJin is signed to RedStart Media, along with my little cousin, Kum Jun Hyeon, and the two trainees who were cut in episode 5, Hong Keon Hee(84) and the talented Kim Min Seoung(58).

So in both cases you have one popular trainee in a group of four, with only one of the other three surviving to the second cut. But also in both cases you have some talent in the trainees who got cut. Park Hyunbeen is actually pretty charming on stage, Hong Keon Hee just sort of makes me smile, and Kim Min Seong, though completely ignored by MNET, is really great, you guys. He was on the Backdoor-K team! He’s the one who does the flip right at the end of Backdoor -- and you know that MNET hates him because they only showed it once. THEY ONLY SHOWED A BACKFLIP ONCE, YOU GUYS. (Right before he does the flip, the whole team shouts MINSEONG-AH! affectionately. Watch it again!)

Anyway, it’s hard to know what will happen, but I fear that both these groups of four will debut post-Bepler, and it’ll be like WekiMeki and Gugudan, or Astro or CIX or even IVE, where a few extremely popular trainees vastly overshadow the rest of the group. 

So here’s what I propose, Redstart and Jellyfish, and hear me out. Put all eight of these trainees on a group together! Gunwook can be the leader and center, Jun Hyeon can be main vocal, and the rest can be sub vocals and rappers. You can name the group, oh, I don’t know, R.J.A.S.F., pronounced “Raz” (the J and the F will be silent). It’ll stand for “Red Jellyfish Always Swim Free” and the group concept will be that they are encouraging their fans to swim through life’s troubles with bright cheer. I mean, I’m on board, aren’t you? RJASF, Fighting! 

The Nugus: Lee Dong Yeol (44), Lee Hwanhee (46*), Jang Ji Ho (63), and Winnie (80) 

*Lee Hwanhee withdrew after episode 5, but was ranked 46 at that time.

I don’t know what’s going to happen to either Up10tion or NINE.i in the future. It’s not impossible that being on this show will boost these two groups. It happened for Nu’est when 4 of their members went on Produce101 Season 2. But it doesn’t strike me as super likely in this case. 

So I hope for good things, but don’t expect them. 

Seo Won, who is on NINE.i with JiHo and Winnie, is still on the show, but it seems extremely unlikely that he’ll make the final Top9. Neither JiHo nor Winnie made much an impact, unfortunately. So we’ll have to see.

Up10tion’s contracts are all up in 2023 and a bunch of them have already left the agency, but not the group. Will they start to get better songs now, if they have more control in the future? Will people give them a chance? I don’t know. But I do know that Spin Off by Up10tion is a great song that just gets better the more you listen to it. Lee Hwanhee’s vocals are all over that thing. Go give it a listen. It can only help. Fighting, guys! 

The Conundrums: Lee Ye Dam (36) and Jung I Chan (49)

These are two who are a bit tougher to know what to do with.

Jung I-chan, who I think prefers to call himself E-Chan, just doesn’t seem set up to be a K-pop idol. His facial expressions show every stray thought he has. He seems to lose focus quickly and seems to lack self-control or a sense of what he might seem like to other people. On the other hand, he has some musical talent and a lovely singing voice. Please go check out his Youtube Channel. He posts a lot of covers that he’s clearly making in his bedroom on a little Casio keyboard or something, but they’re good. My hope for him is that he gets to make OST songs (those are soundtracks for dramas -- a good reliable source of income for people who can actually sing but can’t really dance or perform), because really, that’s what he can do: sing. Good luck, hon. 

As for Lee Yedam, oof, this is tough. I think his agency wants to push him as a soloist, but it’s not going to work out for him as a soloist. Yeah, it breaks my heart. I think he’s so effing talented, you guys. And a cutey! Shorter guys are sexy too! I don’t know what the obsession is with height. Shorter people are better on airplanes! They eat less so they’re climate friendly! Hurray for short people!

Anyway, I don’t think his agency can field a whole boy group to put him on, so I hope that he breaks his contact and goes to another agency where he can be put in a boy group. Just as there are visual members, and sexy members, and cheerful members, a lot of boy groups have “unthreatening” members. You know, the boy who is a little more approachable than the others, and who girls can daydream is their boyfriend that they cheat on with the sexy member. On Exo, it’s Xiumin. On SHINee, it was probably Onew (when they debuted). On NCT, I’d say it’s probably Doyeon, but I don’t know NCT too well. On TXT, it’s probably Taehyun. You know what I mean? Often the approachable member is also super talented, too, and it’s not like they’re unpopular, but they’re just not usually people’s bias.

Lee Yedam would be ideal for that kind of role. He's a super talented all-rounder who would be a good addition to basically any team. He can pull off cute concepts and sexy concepts. He would be unlikely to be people’s biases, but fans of the group would be protective of how talented and sweet he is. So Yedam, if you’re reading this -- go find a bigger agency that can put you on a big team. Maybe go approach Jellyfish or Redstart!

Surely, you had hoped life would have taken a turn a long time ago with the pandemic.

Going outside without masks and crippling fear seemed like a dream, despite it all having been a reality for most of our lives. And while it was cliché, you truly don’t know what you have until it’s gone, like the boring routine you had complained about but now wished to get back.

And in your case, you also didn’t know that one app could have the ability to make things slightly easier during these times – TikTok.

Call it as you may, but quarantine TikTok content was a blessing and while you could swear by that, so could the fans and everyone else on the app since the moment you (and Harry) joined.

Having had tried so many pranks, challenges, and dances, you showed no signs of coming to an end of finding humor and pleasure from the app that Gen Z dominated with the wildest spirits.

With wild spirits, came wild content and for a generation that is openly expressive, there was also wholesome content; all of which Harry’s fans had tagged you to do and try with him.

‘Make your partner impersonate you’

For that one, Harry seemed to be the most excited to do, face beaming with a thousand spiraling ideas of things he could do and say.

The moment the video began, Harry was seen under your white covers, your pink velvet headband that everyone considered iconic rested on his head to show that he was acting like you, pretending to be sleepy as he spoke in a softer voice than his, “Don’t want to get up. More cuddles, please, baby.”

Then video then cut to Harry in the kitchen, you following behind him.

“I wonder where H is, need to pinch his bum.” He said in the same pitch he used for the previous shot.

The video then cut to Harry sitting on the couch beside you, holding his phone, “Baby, look at that!” He showed you his phone, showing you a video on TikTok, “Can we do it?”

‘Wipe your lips after your bf kisses you’

For this, you were picking Harry up from the studio.

Waiting in the parking lot, you had your phone placed behind the box of tissues.

To stay safe, you began recording a normal video for you to edit later as you waited for Harry to show.

When he did, Harry looked right and left as he searched for your car before his eyes fell on you and despite the mask on his face hiding half of it, you could tell that he smiled.

Getting inside the car, Harry took off his mask with a sigh, “First time to actually breathe since morning.” He said before leaning closer to you, pressing his lips against yours.

Doing your part, you looked ahead as you wiped your lips with the back of your hand, noticing Harry’s body stiff as he looked at you.

“Did you just-” He paused, “Did you wipe your lips?”

You hummed in confusion, acting as if you hadn’t heard him as you looked at him.

“Did you-Come here,” he frowned before pulling you close by your hoodie’s drawstrings, pressing his lips against yours in a kiss again.

Again, you wiped your lips.

“Why are you doing that?” He asked, not only confusion being evident in his tone, but hurt, too, “Why are you wiping my ki-Babe, I’m clean.”

“What?” You asked, looking at him as you smiled amusingly, trying to contain your laughter.

“Why are you wiping my kiss?” Harry almost whined, frowning.

“I’m sorry, it’s for TikTok,” you giggled, breaking into laughter when he groaned with a roll of his eyes before he grabbed your jaw, kissing your lips more aggressively.

“Never again.”

‘Let go of your partner’s hand and see what they do’

If there was one thing Harry liked to brag about, it was knowing how to multitask; drive with one hand, hold yours with the other.

It was a natural occurrence for the both of you to hold hands when he drove, no matter what.

Deciding to try that one trend, you took advantage of Harry being focused on the road to film your intertwined hands on your thigh for two seconds before taking your hand out of his.

Instantly, Harry glanced at you, seemingly unaware to you tilting your phone in the other hand to film his face, “Why’d you leave my hand?” He only mumbled before opening his palm towards you once again, smiling when he heard you softly giggle as you put your hand back in his, cooing when he raised it his lips, pressing a soft and gentle kiss on your knuckles, “This stays right here.”

‘Film yourself acting like your partner’

Since the TikTok of Harry acting you like received so many reactions, among them were fans asking you to act like Harry as well, and Harry was down to watch that happen.

Harry recorded you, first shot of video being a little shaky as he couldn’t contain his giggles while watching you in his flared pants, an oversized shirt, his cross pendant on your neck between the valley of your chest, rings on your fingers that showed chipped black polish on your nails.

Your hair was gathered up in a scrunchie, one leg over the other as you sat on a chair, “I’m Harry Styles,” you began, “And like, I never explain my music, I let people interpret it the way they want because music,” you sucked a breath, “Is art. It’s a form of expression that isn’t limited, it’s, like, very open. Like the ocean.” You said slowly, mimicking Harry’s accent and smiling at the end when Harry burst out laughing.

For the next shot, you were in Harry’s white bathrobe, coming out of the bathroom before leaning on the doorframe and looking at Harry as he filmed you, “You sure you’re going to let me shower alone, love?”

Another shot was of you in Harry’s joggers and TPWK black hoodie, sprawled on your couch with the hood on, looking at Harry in disbelief as you still mimicked his accent and deep voice, “Excuse me? Why are you standing there and not cuddling me?”

In a grey tank top of his that you dramatically spilt water on to make it look like sweat and sweat shorts, you had Harry’s boxing gloves on your hands as you bumped your fists together, approaching Harry as he recorded, “God, I’m so sweaty, I have to go hug my girlfriend.”

For the final shot, you had Harry’s guitar in your arms, adjusting the strap as you stood, “I’m going to write a song that is so sexual and record it but I’m not going to release it because I’m a biiiiiitch.” You sang, dramatically strumming the guitar.

‘Pretend to take a mirror selfie with your partner then whisper something dirty in their ear’

You enjoyed the sun; the way it sneaked inside yours and Harry’s room from the sides of your curtains, lit up the room so warmly.

You enjoyed how the natural lighting looked for pictures.

You also enjoyed teasing the shit out of your boyfriend.

“Come here,” you made one grabby hand at Harry who entered the room, scratching his chin, “Let’s take a picture.”

Already used to random pictures being taken together, Harry reached you, standing in front of your vanity mirror as he wrapped his arms around you from behind, pressing a kiss against your temple.

Oblivious to it being a video, Harry leaned his chin on your shoulder, giving his famous smug look to the mirror as you held up your phone.

Turning your head, you made sure your voice was low so that your phone wouldn’t pick what you said;

“Want you to pound me.”

And instantly, Harry’s smug look faltered; his eyes widening, face brightening as he looked at you as you giggled before releasing a squeal once you felt him carry you and move you from where you stood, and to the bed as you laughed.

‘Tell your partner your ex wants to return a hoodie of yours’

Propping your phone up, you made sure it showed Harry as he cooked while you sat on the kitchen stool.

You folded your arms on the table, clearing your throat as you eyed Harry while he was chopping carrots.

“Hey, H,” Harry hummed, stealing a glance at you before looking back at his chore, “My ex called earlier,”

At this, Harry’s eyebrows furrowed before he looked up at you, putting down the knife and leaning his hands on the counter, his arms seeming to look bigger as he tensed, “What did he say?”

Trying not to laugh, you looked down, beginning to play with your fingers before giving him a shrug, “Just that he still has a hoodie of mine at his place,”

“Yeah?”

“And asked if I need it back.”

“What did you say?”

You gave him another shrug, “Said I’ll let him know.”

“Well, do you need it?” He asked, “Like really need it?”

“Yeah, it was my high school’s.”

“But baby, you have a lot of hoodies,” one hand of his reached to his lips, fingers grazing his bottom lip for a moment, “Can get it for you.”

“That’d be so awkward, H,” you sighed.

“Why? I’m your boyfriend.” Harry reasoned, “Maybe I can just come with you,” he said again before his face lit up, “I can have it customized instead. Just tell me how it looked like and-”

“Baby, no,” you chuckled, “It won’t be the same.”

“Come on, love,” he frowned, “He calls you 3 years later to tell you he still has your hoodie. You don’t think that’s suspicious? He knows you’re with m-Everyone knows we’re together.”

“Maybe he forgot,” you shrugged, “Actually, let me call and as-”

“Oh, fuck no!” Harry instantly rushed to you.

‘Aggressively tell your partner you love them’

Chilling on the couch, Harry was watching the TV, unaware of your phone that had been resting on the shelf to record you beforehand.

You stomped where Harry was, whose head snapped to you, his mouth chewing his banana bite slower as he eyed you carefully, taking in your angry state.

You threw your notebook on the couch beside him, “I love you!” You said aggressively, a frown on your face as you pointed at him, “I fucking love you!”

Harry took a moment, his face shifting to one of amusement before he raised his hands up – one holding his banana – before pointing at you, “I fucking love you, too!” He screamed.

“No, no,” you shook your head, still aggressively speaking, “I love you more!”

“I’m so fucking in love with you!” Harry said as aggressively, standing in an instant, towering over you as he pressed himself against you before wrapping one arm around you, “Why are we shouting, you weirdo?”

‘Stick your hand out and see what your partner does’

Harry was sat beside you on his laptop, music blasting from it as he emailed himself some tasks.

Recording him with one hand, you reached your arm out, opening your palm at him.

Harry looked down at your hand, a smile making its way to his face before he looked at you before placing his chin on your hand, closing his eyes as he gave you a dopey smile as you squished his cheeks while giggling, “Hiii.”

@bpdaf so this answer opened a can of worms (that I can call procrastination) and I wanted to address it, but with the limited characters in the reply function, I decided to answer it with a new post. Also sorry if this come as an attack, I promise it's not. I just became really curious if I had the wrong idea about the live-shooting system as I was ready to refute your points, but realized I didn't have enough knowledge to do so.

*also tagging @jahe, @yasmini24, @le-amarant as they also replied to my post and I figured maybe you were also interested in this (although it's really long and rambly, so I don't blame you for ignoring the post entirely). So yeah warning, this post is really long.

So I'm well aware of kdrama's live shoot system. But I did wonder if it was normal to start shooting 6 months before the first airing episode, as I was under the impression 6 months of shooting exceeded the standard duration of filming. But I couldn't actually refute it without some data to back that up. So I went to find data.

According to Wikipedia's page on Korean Dramas, they write: “As producing a series involves high expenses, production companies seek to shoot the episodes in the shortest time possible. In contrast to practices elsewhere, the first four episodes of Korean series are usually shot in advance, but the rest are shot continuously as the series is being aired.”

This fits in line with what I believed about Korean dramas live shooting system. They film a couple of episode ahead of time and then rest comes while it's still airing to fit with the audience response to it. Even preproduced dramas are sometimes reshot and re-edited while it's airing. But it didn't really say anything about the average filming duration for a drama or what shortest time possible was defined as. Probably because all dramas will aim for different things and given the content it can vary a lot how long it takes to film.

But I highly doubt it took Vincenzo 6 months to shoot something around 4 episodes and then crammed the rest into the 2 remaining months, as they knew from the start they had 20 episodes to fill.

So let's go through some other drama's shooting schedule to compare with Vincenzo.

I chose to limit the list to 2020 dramas (as they were likely affected by the pandemic) and tvN dramas, so it's the same broadcasting company as these dramas will likely share the same practices. Obviously with the amount I have included, I can't make any definite conclusions, but it does show a pattern.

*disclaimer I tried my best to accurately determine the shooting duration from when filming started to when it ended, but not all of these dramas had that information readily available, so I made do with the information I had at hand. This means some of these are just estimations.

So without further ado, here's the list:

Vincenzo:

May 2020, Director Kim Hee Won and writer Park Jae Bum teamed up.

July 2020, Song Joong Ki and Jeon Yeo Bin were considering the drama, while Ok Taecyeon had confirmed

September 2020, filming started

February 20th, 2021 first episode aired

I couldn’t find the exact time shooting started, so these numbers are based between March and May, as I assume they didn’t shoot without Oh Jung Se being casted and while the table read photos were released in May, it could very well be they had started shooting before this.

7. Stranger /Secret Forest season 2

Shooting duration before first episode aired: 6 months

Filming wrapped before last airing episode: 4-5 months

What does this mean?

So the drama that comes closest to Vincenzo's filming duration is Hospital Playlist, but they also did things a bit differently. According to their Wikipedia, they only aired 1 episode a week to comply with 52-hour week system and to avoid overnight filming for the cast's and crews' health. So that would extend their shooting time. They also had the same amount of shooting time as Vincenzo before the first episode aired, i.e. 6 months, but Hospital playlist was only 12 episode drama so they also had less content to fill.

The rest of these dramas has a shooting time with 6 months or less. I will say though a lot of these dramas are not action-packed (also I haven't checked the budget for any of these), so comparatively they probably have different needs when filming. The drama that comes closest in terms of action is Stranger/Secret Forest, and it's also pretty close in shooting time with only 2 month different (that's counting from the first table read though). This was however pre-produced so they wrapped up filming before the first episode even aired (if my information is correct). Also this was a season two so they were operating under a little different circumstances.

But with the exception of Stranger/Secret Forest (preproduced) and Hospital Playlist(tried to work with humane working hours), none of this drama has a 6-month filming duration before the first episode aired. In fact some of these dramas don't even exceed 6 months of filming. Meaning they had less time to shoot before the first episode aired. Their production was probably also lower and none them did CGI (although I haven't watched all of them so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) as that should also be accounted for.

So 8 months of filming is a lot to allocate to a drama, at least it's not the norm. There are other dramas that exceed that filming time that didn't make the list (Mr. Sunshine sorry too much research for at this point), but obviously that is not the standard.

Obviously I don't know how the filming was divided, how many of the episodes they had filmed before the first one aired. I don't know how many of the episode scripts were written before it aired. But I can see that even with the live-shooting, Vincenzo has some very uneven scheduling that doesn't align with how the rest of these dramas did their scheduling and airing. None of the mentioned dramas had any delays (in airing, I can't be sure about filming as some of them are probably affected by the pandemic), and yet Vincenzo did, even though they had spent more time filming before the first episode aired.

Also, most of these dramas wrapped up filming with more than a week to spare before the final airing, with It's Okay Not To Be Okay coming the closest to the airing date (with the ones where I know the date when they finished shooting), but they also only had 1-3 months of filming before the drama actually started airing so much less time than Vincenzo. And although they didn't have CGI, they did have the animations for each of the fairytales which I don't know how long it took but I can imagine it took some time.

So then I looked up another drama not by tvN but by Park Jae Bum:

I couldn't find the date they finished filming, but given they only started a month before airing (honestly I felt super sorry for the cast and crew when I saw these dates), I am assuming the hit the last airing date pretty closely with filming, and that would give them 3 months of filming roughly. And they also had 20 episodes like Vincenzo.

I haven't seen this drama myself, so I can't say anything about the writing quality, but here Park Jae Bum was working under even more time pressure and was able to deliver the ending on time and as I hear, it was pretty a pretty good ending (but I haven't seen it, so feel free to refute me). And yet he couldn't do it for Vincenzo. So I do think something happened with ending, whether it was Park Jae Bum just took a long time writing it for whatever reasons, or someone/thing (be it something personal, writer's block, execs not liking the ending etc.) actually interfered and that prolonged the writing or entirely changed the ending.

Anyway this became too long, so let me just end it here.

I wish I had time to make a more comprehensive list so I could be more definite in the conclusion because obviously I can't base everything of the schedule of 8 dramas that also vastly different in production quality, genre and content.

So yeah I might have just wasted the last three-four hours making something that doesn't even make sense. But hey, at least I'm less prepared for the exams now, good use of time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
