6. Which artists inspire you right now?

I'm sure this comes as a surprise to exactly zero of you considering the stuff I've been posting lately, but... Yellow Tanabe is my biggest inspiration right now!

I really like her character designs and I absolutely love the pacing of her manga and all the panel compositions are just *chef's kiss!!

I also really like how she visualizes abstract powers and concepts.

This sequence of four middle-schoolers forcing a guy to order three milkshakes is INCREDIBLE

anyways I'm currently obsessing over Kekkaishi and Birdmen and I heavily encourage everyone following my blog to read them because I suspect that's going to be a lot of what I'm going to be posting about in the coming months!! Genuinely her stuff is incredibly well-constructed!! I could talk for hours about her stuff!

11. Favorite comment you've ever received on your work?

There are nice comments, and comments that are so far off the wall (not even necessarily in a good way) that it starts living rent-free in my head.

I can't choose, so here are the top two contenders for the latter category!

This comment on my DCMK You Can't Stay Here comic:

I've seen fandoms kind of hijack regular posts but I've rarely seen... I can't even tell if this is a regular post or a fandom post to be honest. I thought it was a normal comment (still weird considering the person knew nothing about DCMK) all the way up until the point it said "narratively obligated to marry your rival" and I was like what?? Do you guys live your lives based on what the narrative dictates??? what is going on. who is bolli. who is kjartan

This set of two comments on the same DCMK comic:

When I got that first reply on the tumblr post, I genuinely couldn't tell if this person liked the comic. it hurts a lot... but it's objectively well done? Are you saying this begrudgingly? What does this mean???

Then, the next day, I got a comment on the same post, but on Pixiv this time, from the same person, and I was like "Ah!! So you do like it!!! It hurt but you enjoyed what I did!! Wow!!!" This interaction still lives in my mind rent free.

As for genuinely good comments that made me shake in my boots, here's my absolute favorite comment, on my 98-page Kaishin doujin, Breaking Stasis!

Oh wow. I feel like I have no words to express how good this is. This is just so pretty? It feels like reading an actual manga, with the style and the really nice way the panels are laid out and everything really. This must have taken so much time and I am in awe of this dedication. There are so many moments that I just paused to admire the art or composition (Kudo's face as he first wonders what is going on, the way Kudo thinks about his memories like with Ran, the reflection when talking about how the night can't fall, the reflection as the glider moves up, so many just so nice)

I admit I was confused the first time, but wow on my first reread it was so nice. The emotional beats just feel like they are hit masterfully. Kudo's confusion as the loops occur. (Ran changing into Aoko and back and forth was so interesting.) Kuroba being desperate. The action scene as they fell? So intense. And then the ending felt really meaningful. I really like how positive Kudo is, which can make sense with how much support he has compared to Kuroba. His line when he tells Kuroba to keep going (and eventually maybe forgive himself) was just so nice and heroic almost, something I can see him saying. It's a really nice message, to keep on moving forward and having an actual effect on people even if it's hard. (And it was also fun to see their interactions, with Kuroba being bothersome haha during the card trick earlier, with Kudo being exasperated and then pleasantly surprised, and then Kudo hiding the earlier shouting when Kuroba asked about what happened in the illusion. I really like the way you wrote their dynamic! And I thought the jokes were amusing!) And then I reread this again just to look it at all once more.

I'm glad I also saw on Tumblr that you might print this? You should put the interest check link in the notes here as well! I'm going to need to figure out how to keep my eye on any possible updates haha. I think this was a really amazing comic and will probably be thinking about this! Thanks for writing, drawing, and sharing!

Honestly, part of me still suspects that it's one of my irl friends anonymously leaving me comments or something. There's no way someone who doesn't even know me would leave such a detailed comment, right? (I'm working on accepting the fact that yes, people do like my things, completely independent of my charming personality and visage. It's tough going.)

21. Weirdest thing you've ever drawn?

I'm not done with this, and I don't know if I'll ever pick this up again, but here's a sequence of fake recipe infographics by a vampire teaching you how to make vampire-safe popping boba

I thought it would be super funny and then I realized I hated graphic design </3 Drawing cute things is also really difficult for me LMAO

Objectively I could finish this and post this but I don't even know who would like this sort of post. I'd just have to finish this part about blood jelly (which is a real thing; I based it off of pig's blood and duck's blood, which is used fairly frequently in Chinese cuisine) and have a cute wrap-up picture and then that's it. But I think I'm too obsessed with Kekkaishi right now to do this. Oops! ! !

I can spin you a tale about how my anxiety overlaps with a lot adhd symptoms and makes me constantly wander from fixation to fixation without ever being completely satisfied, I could also talk about how I tend to stick to the fringes of things, content to be on the sidelines and watch things go by, that i deliberately pick less traveled areas and pick things thrown away, that I enjoy the imagery and general idea of someone wandering the wayside in autumn and the kind of heartaching loneliness that comes with it that I feel intimately, but mostly I wanted something vaguely deep and poetic and went with the first thing that crossed my mind  

6. aw fuck. if I had to pick something it’s my hard won self respect. a lot of people prioritize compassion or an ability but I fought for years to learn to be kind to myself and I’m proud of that.

28. Personality wise, stability, the ability to make me laugh, a healthy dose of confidence. Physically, you know things would be easier if I could figure that one out for myself, for the most part it’s girls in general cause they be pretty, but anything beyond shallow attraction requires an actual connection

I made a list and it ended up being three paragraphs, so just give me a scene and I’ll tell you how I felt about it. xD

Guilty pleasure: Angst...with happy ending :3

Problematic fave: Uhhh...all of them are varying levels of problematic. Just give me a character and I’ll say whether or not I like them, along with why lol.

The Tower: What was the moment that rocked your world or got you fully invested in ToG?

Rocked my world: The fkkn hug ^ tm.

Fully invested: Bam being betrayed by Rachel at the end of S01.

The Star: What was a moment that made you soft?

Khun saying he’d do what Daniel did if it meant bringing Bam back. Believe it or not, it took me 250 chapters to ship Bam and Khun lol.

Bam reaching out his hand to Khun, asking his best friend to climb the tower with him. 

The Moon: What is your favorite headcanon?

“Blue turtle is the banana peel and black turtle is the banana.  Blue turtle protects black turtle and keeps him from getting eaten while black turtle keeps blue turtle from being a useless, annoying banana peel that makes people slip on the floor.” - Rak

The gay levels of Khun/Bam are off the fkkn charts off-panel, which is why SIU NEVER LETS US SEE THEM. OTL

The Sun: What are some predictions you have?

They’re actually climbing deeper into the tower rather than climbing to the top.

Rachel kept Bam from climbing out of the cave. One method she used was through telling Bam that he was not ‘chosen’.

The children outside the tower--if that really is the ‘outside’--were dead babies that Arlene brought back to life.

The Tower is a virtual world, something like the Matrix maybe, but more like Animal Crossing.

Headon coerced Rachel into doing what she did because it was the best way to keep Bam hidden from Jahad for as long as possible--also, he’s in cahoots with Arlene.

Judgement: What were some incorrect predictions you had?

Maria, apparently, is not a good sister with a heart of gold. I’m still fkkn salty about that.

Bam actually disowned Rachel for real. That...I did not ever think that would happen.

Bam and Khun also actually hugged. I doubted SIU and I apologize for that.

World: How has ToG or the fandom impacted you?

ToG: It has helped me understand the world at large better.

Fandom: Ya’ll have helped me become a more open person.

didn’t quite get the conversation the way i wanted it but it’s good to go! thank you for the prompt!

It’s almost sweet, he thinks. The way Viole let’s himself rest in Khun’s arms, pressed back to chest. The data human was volatile, angry in a way Baam never let himself be, and prone to sudden violence. And yet. He relaxed in Khun’s arms. A soldier sent home to rest.

Khun tried not to resent him for it. This wasn’t Baam, not his friend, a patchwork of battle instinct and form and the very worst of Baam’s time under FUG. He doesn’t understand how Baam can stand to look Viole in the eye, how he can stand to see himself so wounded and not look away. Khun would, except he deserves every moment of seeing the Baam Khun couldn’t save. 

Viole shifts, carefully quiet, but Khun catches the slight grimace that flits across his face and realizes he is gripping the data human too hard. He forces himself to relax, to stroke a hand through Viole’s long hair in a steady, soothing rhythm. Viole sighs, resettling.

“I know you don’t like me.” He says. Khun doesn’t let his surprise show.

“I know you don’t like me, but,” Viole presses his face against Khun's shoulder, “he was never ready to lose you, and there’s enough of him in me to,, to not be ready to lose you either.”

 Khun’s next breath is a very controlled exhale. They have a minute, at most, before the rest of the data world is gone. Khun can see where the horizon turns to blank, white nothing from here. He doesn’t know if he wants to wish for more time or less.

There’s a minute left, Khun thinks, he can give this chunk of data a minute of honesty.

“You are a culmination of every way I have failed Baam. And a part of me hates you for that.”

The pause between them might have gone on for longer, but Viole knew they were running out of time too. 

“Yes,” he says, because there are ways in which Khun isn’t wrong, ways in which he wouldn’t let himself be wrong, but, he ignores Khun’s flinch at the word to turn and cup Khun’s face.

“I am also every way he still needs you, his determination to see you again, his desperate hope for your safety, I am,” he falters. In the background the white horizon has swallowed the mountains, steadily inching closer.

“He is still me, I would not be here if this didn’t still hurt him. And he needs you, I know because I need you. And I’ll never get you, and that’s ok, he deserves you. He deserves you and I’m just data.”

For the first time since he saw the data human Khun’s heart clenches in guilt for him, and Viole smiles like he knows exactly what Khun’s thinking.

“But you’ll never forget me.” 

He pushes Khun through the door and Khun can’t find it in himself to fight it.

.

“I’m sorry.” Baam tells him the moment they get some space to themselves on the train.

“For what?” Khun asks.

“For everything.”

Khun sighs, presses a hand to his shoulder, where he can still feel the slight pressure of Viole’s push. He thinks of Viole, of his simple request to be held, and Baam’s determination to fulfill that.

“This isn’t something you have to apologize for,” He says.

“I would have held you too, back then, if I could. It’s just.. He’s not you.”

Because that was the crux of it. Baam had needed Khun to hold him, to be with him, at a time when Khun hadn’t even known Baam was alive. Khun doesn’t get to miraculously fix that mistake now. Viole was alone, there was nothing Khun could do about that, but he could stay beside Baam. 

And, as he opened his arms to his best friend, he thought, at the very least, he could hold Baam, even as the memory of Viole pressed tight.

“The Fool: I found the manhwa when it was still only on the first season so I was pretty young. I thought it was really cool and I would revisit it sporadically over the years for updates. My favorite thing about it was the characters, because I have pretty strong empathy comboed with getting easily bored so even if a story has fantastic plot but mediocre characters I won’t be interested. I’m probably just picky though.”

Oh hey, same here, same here. My empathy makes it hard for me to just casually enjoy stories, so there must be a fantastic plot with fantastic characters. *nod nod* 

ALSO, AGAIN WITH A VETERAN.  DANG YA’LL.  I BOW TO EVERY ONE OF YOU WHO HAVE BEEN ON SIU’S JOURNEY SINCE THE BEGINNING.

You want wave controller and you got Anima on that test. Ironically, I got wave controller, but after seeing your results, I wanted Anima lol.

“The Hierophant: I’m not quite sure about this one but I think all the single agents that use anyone, including Fug to their own advantage. I just love double and tripple crosses let’s be honest. Plus Beta was an angy cutie and I feel for him and the other experiment kids.” 

Honestly, you hit the nail on the head here. I really have a hard time liking Hansung but after seeing his character at the end of S04 and beginning of S03, he strikes me more as someone who did what he had to do in order to make sure Bam survived in the long run, even if it means enslaving Bam under FUG. It was super eye-opening to see it.

“Strength: Rak because he is one of the most collected, emotionally intelligent characters. He has his shit together, which is honestly an accomplishment in this universe.”
