I like the sound and vibe of On the Street, and I respect and can appreciate J Cole’s writing, but I’m confused about why that was the message chosen for this collab. Army is bombarding comment sections by repeating that it’s a ‘see you later’ song because Hobi is enlisting, but other than the chorus, what about these lyrics conveys that message? Their verses feel like they belong to separate songs to me. I’m not trying to be disrespectful, facetious, condescending, or sarcastic here, I really am confused and would like to understand, and I would appreciate any insights you might be willing to share.

I did see one comment on YouTube that said: “I heard someone say they wanted a second verse from J Hope but then they realized he did give us a second verse… in his first language, dance. And he did it beautifully” and I think this is my favorite take so far. Thank you for your time (sorry if this ask is dumb).

Ask 4: I don't want to be rude but "as the moon jumps over the cow"??? Wut?? Isn't J Cole supposed to be some good lyricist? I saw khh and kpop fans questioning this collab and this lyric in particular and I think they're right. BTS should stop giving khh a bad name because now people will hate kpop.

Ask 5: Hi BPP, a lot of people are offended over J.Cole’s verse on atheists being stupid for not believing in a higher people, which further proves to me that they take everything a person says to be something to be Personally offended over, not an honest expression of ones thoughts. And why I think a reason why so many arent listening to true hiphop, true rap, the same ones that the rap line no doubt listened to… It just symbolises to me that these same people are so used to the sanitized version of music that a lot of kpop produces too because jcole’s verse wasnt even that bad honestly… i don’t know, it just came across to me as the same reaction religious people will have when you tell them god doesn’t exist, and a lot of people wont take issue with that too. I know I don’t as someone who belives in a god same way I don’t care that jcole thinks atheists are stupid lool I don’t know im just seeing the hypocrisy and them being unable to let art be art, let music be music.

first of all, congrats to our hobi for another great track!!! haven’t been able to stop looping it bcuz it’s that good!! not only is army loving it, i’ve also seen jcole fans saying good things too and some really checked out hobi’s discography and were impressed,,which is what i’d call a successful collab! out of curiosity i checked the khiphop reddit to read what theyre reactions are but no surprise they only praised jcole and wanted other khiphop artists to have done it instead of hobi hah! i’m surprised that they’re still as snooty towards k-idols turned rappers,,but at the same time snooty ppl be snooty lol. but i’m curious if korean khiphop fans are still turning away the rapline’s work? esp hobi since he’s really made an effort to flex his skills in jitb,,i only ever seen ifans’ opinions and they’re hardly the representative when it comes to khiphop hah!

ofc whatever they’re opinions are it doesn’t impact hobi and suga and rm’s work in the long run,,especially since they’ve earned enough respect from their idols to be able to work with them,,i’m just curious! thankss bpp!

Overall and Abridged Review: On The Street for me is a solid 10/10.

The Lyrics (as I understand them)

Anon in Ask 1, first I’d like to refer you to Hobi’s interview in Variety where he talks about the song (linked here) and I’ve posted an excerpt screenshot below.

Personally, rather than On The Street having a “see you later” message (probably inferred from Hobi waving goodbye to a kid in the opening scene), I see it more as a song marking a pivotal moment in both Hobi and Cole’s careers, as Hobi reflects on the paths he has walked to this point even as he continues on this street called life, and J. Cole wonders out loud if it’s time for a change, to grow beyond his identity as a rapper. It only feels like a “see you later” song in the sense that it will be a companion song, for me personally, while Hobi serves and until he returns from enlistment. I agree with the interpretation in the YouTube comment that Hobi is also storytelling/writing his second verse through dance while J. Cole is rapping, and that this is a beautiful way to see it too - but I’ll expound more on this below in Dance and the Message.

Anon in Ask 4, J. Cole is a brilliant lyricist and it’s funny you mentioned that line in particular because when I first heard it I nearly burst out laughing at how witty and brilliant it is. That line is an example of a classic Jermaine pun. I’ll explain: A lot of people grew up learning nursery rhymes, and one of the more popular ones I recall is Hey Diddle Diddle, which has the rhyme “the cow jumped over the moon”. This nursery rhyme is also the source of the English expression to be “over the moon” I.e. excited, elated, happy. J. Cole took that children’s rhyme and flipped it on it’s head to then mean the passage of time, “as the moon jumps over the cow”. He uses it to express time passing merrily for him as he contemplates his next career move. It’s also an absolutely brilliant way to rhyme with the previous bar that ends in “Golden Corral” (which is easily one of the sickest burns in his verse).

Anon in Ask 5, I agree with you almost fully. Outrage is the name of the game and has been the zeitgeist for at least 5 years now. Like what are you doing on the internet in 2023 if you’re not here annoyed, mocking something, being critical, and raging about something else? Even if that something is another autonomous human being expressing their opinion on God on their own song… Personally, when I come across HCP personalities online, I ignore them. If they interact with me I tell them they’ll somehow find a way to manage and cope, and we’ll all be alright in the end. In the case of this song, ignore them. They'll deal.

Dance and the Message (as I understand it)

Hobi's verse in this song is only 8 bars. J-hope practically gifts this song to J. Cole who spits 32 solid bars on this track. We all know J. Cole - a veteran in the rap game who has earned respect from everyone from Hov, Ye, Kendrick, down to avantgarde heavyweights like Jay Electronica - is one of Hobi's idols and so it's heartwarming to see the way Hobi expresses his respect for J. Cole, dancing underground while J. Cole raps on top of a building with nothing but the sky above him.

J-Hope dances the entirety of J. Cole's verse, just feeling himself, losing himself to the music while his idol spits fire. It's so fucking decadent. At the end of J. Cole's verse, Hobi walks out of the subway and climbs to the top to meet J. Cole as equals.

Hobi begins the song in an NYC alley that opens up into a main street where Hobi performs the song's main choreography on. This is the same location in J. Cole's Simba - the song that starts the Simba trilogy in J. Cole's discography, which was the first main track on J. Cole's debut mixtape The Come Up that established him as a force to be reckoned with on the American rap scene at only 22 years old. The setting alone is a callback and homage to J. Cole's beginnings, on which Hobi raps about his own path, wanting to repay those who have helped formed him into what he is, and the hope he has going forward.

Hobi has done something like this before, calling his first mixtape Hope World reminiscent of J. Cole's debut studio album called Cole World.

The Media and the Message (as I understand it)

One thing I absolutely adore about BTS's songs and music videos, is that they infuse them with the sort of depth that only comes from intimately knowing and respecting the subject matter, and they do so in such a subtle way that it's obvious they expect whoever is watching to actually know both the artist and the subject. They don't spoon-feed anything to the viewer, just present the art as is and if you've done your homework, that means you're their target audience and you're right in the middle of it with them. In the Variety interview I linked above, J-hope references his documentary (Anon who sent me the ask to review it, I've only seen clips and I'm yet to watch the full thing. When I do, I'll write about it 💜), where it shows Hobi meeting J. Cole and how he struggles but ultimately communicates his adoration and respect to Jermaine, and how Jermaine graciously receives it.

Take for instance how Hobi approached Chicken Noodle Soup originally by Bianca a.k.a. Young B who at the time she made that song and its iconic choreo, was only 16 years old. The song went viral but most of the royalties went to her uncle and she received almost nothing, she never got signed to a label, and was so badly burned by the industry that she only attempted making music again nearly 10 years after Chicken Noodle Soup. Hobi credits that song as one of the catalysts that sparked his love for hip hop and street dance. He reached out to Bianca and paid full rights (not just for a sample), to her (not her uncle), to use the song, and the music video is peppered with references to Harlem, NYC, where the song and dance originated. Showing that level of courtesy to smaller Black artists is rare in the US and virtually unheard of in Korea where the Korean hiphop (KHH) community is more notorious for wearing Black drag and appropriating a history of violence and a wealth of culture that they know absolutely nothing about, except that it looks cool.

When k-pop stans wax lyrical about how BTS is racist or does a Blaccent (this personally makes me chuckle because the people you often see saying this are white people who couldn't tell you the difference between an affected accent by a non-native speaker and a Blaccent if each slapped them on either side of their face), or that BTS doesn't have the respect of the Korean (or American) hip hop scene, et cetera, I chuckle and move on. Because as I've said, none of these people actually know what they're talking about.

The OGs of the KHH scene recognized the talent of BTS's rapline since debut, and have only expressed more respect for BTS as the years have gone by. I'm talking Tablo, the rest of Epik High, Tiger JK, etc. The Jay Parks of the world took some time to catch up, and if 'studio picture-gate' is any indication, they too have quickly come around to recognizing where they fit in the landscape relative to BTS. Rappers are generally egotistical people. They usually spend their time rapping about how they're the shit. What earns you respect is if you can actually back that shit up. And once you have that respect, you don't feel threatened by another rapper because you know anyone who gets to the top has had to earn it. It's what informs the mindset of "real recognize real". Namjoon, Yoongi, and Hoseok passed that hurdle, in my opinion, way back in 2016 with the release of Cypher Pt 4. Everything they've done since then is just jarra. And those at the very top, the Black rappers who imbibe the culture and history of rap music, have long recognized the rapline of BTS for what they are.

Personally, I love the song. The music, the whistling, the chord progression, the jazz and acoustic guitar instrumentation. Everything about it is perfect.

On The Street is an excellent example of what sets BTS apart from other idols and artists in Korea for me. This is a song conceived 100% in the mind of Jung Hoseok, and the seamlessness in execution, the maturity inherent in the respect paid to those whose music and culture they use as a medium, is present at every single point in the song. It's tastefully done, and 100% driven by the artist, and all I can do in the face of art like this, is respect it.

Omgdid you see the interview where XG talked about how they specifically studied a lot of black artists during their training ? Rarely do I see kpop idols actually acknowledge how kpop is majorly influenced by black music it was actually pretty cool

no, i didn’t. i think it’s so important for kpop/khiphop/etc to acknowledge the inspiration and connects of black music and black artist to their music. that’s why i said i wish many black people work in the music in industry in south korea (from music writing, producing, pr, marketing, journalism, fashion, etc) because i feel like we wouldn’t constantly have the jay parks of k industry if people in this music companies don’t have black voices pointing out and saying “why do she have cornrows in her head” or “why is he saying finna in his rap and it don’t correlate to his previous lyric to the point that the lyric don’t make sense” 😭 a lot of the kpop disasters would be avoided if they had some black in the room saying naahhhh this ain’t it 😭

I'm such an introvert that even when I have a once-in-a-life opportunity to talk with one of my favourite kpop/khiphop artists aka Bobby, for days before the event my anxiety is going 'no I REALLY don't wanna talk to him, can I just NOT?'

(Kingdom anon) 😭😭 because of Hanya I had half a mind to choose "babydoll anon" but I'll stay level-headed and choose 🍭 if it's okay?

Also, I need to talk about Ikon/Bobby! Although I would've loved to see them go to the fullest of their ability since this was my first 'encounter' with Ikon, it was so nice to see people having fun during the show. Especially during the rap teams episode when Bobby told the other two that the most important was to have fun, and take this as an opportunity to try something that they wouldn't be able to do with their own group (Hence why Hwiyoung tried autotune, and why Sunwoo wanted a more Khiphop concept) did I like the song? No, but it was so entertaining to see them loosen up and have fun on stage and do things to satisfy their own self!

Like I remember that one of my final project in school was to write a short story, and I wanted to try to write something weird and in the gothic genre, but the teacher who would grade us was not into that kind of stuff so I really spent weeks wondering on if I should write the story as I wanted personally or if I should go for something they'd like, if my choice would affect my grade, if it'd be good... I think it was about 2 days away from the deadline that I decided to say fuck it and wrote my gothic story and honestly? Out of all the projects I made during my time in school, it is one of the pieces I'm the proudest of!

yea that was one thing that i really appreciated about what ikon and bobby brought to the table during kingdom, esp bc those shows are very high stress controlled environments where the stakes are (manufactored) to be very high. i'm glad that bobby could help them let go of some of that pressure, even if it was just for one stage. and it was super cute that he got both of them to be in his most recent solo mv too

aww thank you for staying with me for so long! I know I'm not the most reliable fic writer out here (haha *sobs*) so I really appreciate your support 💜

19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?

Writing in general: I've been writing since I was little. Writing became a form of therapy that I needed growing up but I hated writing personal journal so much that when I was given these journals to dump my thoughts, I ended up filling them with short stories, poems, any form of fiction writing. And then at around 15, I started writing Sailormoon fanfics and children short stories (the latter were published in magazines at some point lol) Writing fanfic (bts, kpop, khiphop) on Tumblr: It started around 2016 when I turned to Tumblr to find kpop content that were still pretty rare back in the day. I began listening to BTS towards the end of 2013 but never got deeper until 2014. On 2016, I found Tumblr blogs that provided links to rare bootlegs for their pre-debut materials, translated videos and texts, and I dove right into those before stumbling into *drumrolls* fanfics! It truly felt like finding rare gems to see that fanfics made up of kpop artists existed and back then, there were only a handful of writers who wrote for BTS. One day, I got an idea for a short story featuring Yoongi (as he just officially became my bias at the time) which I shared on my old blog. Some of the fic writers I talked to back then saw the fic and encouraged me to share it to more people (my original blog was for my art and it didn't get a lot of followers so not many kpop fans saw the story). So after I completed the fic, I decided to created a blog just to share that fic which, surprisingly, got a few excited readers who supported me to continue writing more fics. That story was Wild Strawberries, and that's how I began and I've continued writing until now :')

There have been bumps along the way. Writer's block, plagiarism cases, Tumblr drama, Tumblr purge, and several other events have happened ever since I began actively writing here on Tumblr which have pushed me away from Tumblr and writing fanfics in general. I have to admit, there were times when I felt "yeah, I'm done. this isn't worth it" and I just wanted to stop writing in general (this happened during Covid lockdown). But I always find my way back, either through writer friends that pulled me up to get me to start writing again or readers who were waiting for me to release something new or finish something that I've promised them I would. Where I am now: I'm currently taking things easy. Unlike before, I try not to let fanfic writing and Tumblr life take over my real life so I can always take breaks and focus on what's more important in my personal life. I'm determined to stay at least until I've finished all of my WIPs here, including the fics and series that have been put on hold. I think of this as paying my debt both to myself and my readers who have been supporting me to finish everything that I started here. Where I'm going: I'm just going with the flow. I'm also in the process of writing more seriously. I'm hoping to release and publish my own original novel in the near future. Including the alternate version of Carousel that I promised years ago to release and the upgraded version of BTS Shifters series that I'm turning into a novel series :)

21. Could you ever quit writing? Do you ever wish you could? Why or why not?

Hmm, I don't think I could, even if I want to hahahaha. I think, as mentioned above, it's been proven that no matter what I do to quit, I'll eventually get back to writing again in one way or another. After spending a long time writing, and now that I'm planning to write something outside of fanfics, I feel like the act of writing fiction work has been embedded in my life that it'll be hard for me to completely stop doing it. Maybe I'll end up taking a long break from writing one day or leave it behind completely. I'm not sure if this will happen in the near future, or ever. Like I said, I'm just going with the flow for now and enjoying the time I have here :)

What other blogs of khh krnb do ask an answer and also why is it bad if you don't write your raps jennie will be releasing her album soon many don't consider her a rapper because of it she has never claimed to be queen of rap.

Pretty much any khh blog will answer if their ask box is open and they were still active at some point this year. Look through khh or khiphop tag to find some blogs. I'm not sure about krnb.

People don't like it because hip-hop as an art form has always been about songwriting (or maybe just lyrics writing in general). It's not as impressive if you don't write your own stuff because a big point of rap is the lyricism, word play, rhymes, storytelling etc. It's different from other genres because while people still like the lyrics, the main focus is usually the singer's voice. The voice is important in rap too but I feel like most people rank lyrics the highest. I also feel like it just comes from Black culture too. There's an emphasis on "keeping it real", authenticity, and originality in Black culture which has been infused into hip-hop/rap. It can't be "original" or "authentic" if someone else wrote it for you. It's not your real thoughts. It's not something you uniquely created.

I just consider her an idol rapper. What she brings to the table is fine for her genre. She's a pop star who raps which is fine with me. I don't hold idol rappers to the same standard as someone who is purely hip-hop/rap music.

I mean, Jimin dating Taeyang would have been the ultimate juxtaposition considering he’s Jimin’s favorite idol 😂😂. I love how Eyes, Nose, Lips is the only thing Jimin can play on the piano and the rest of BTS is so over it 😂😂

Also, it’s really no worries that it took you time to reply! I’ve been on Tumblr way too much because I’m anxious lately 😅 I should be working on my writing or actually work on my book or work on a cross stitch but instead, I’m doing anything but that 😂 I say that, I wrote for like two hours earlier, but it wasn’t for my ongoing fic.

I don’t necessarily try to mass add songs the way that I do, it just happens because my like, over 100 hour playlist was just every song from every group I listened to. This one is only 25 hours? I think. They just end up having like artist with like artist. It also has phases between the Kpop and Khiphop 😂.

Request: (Ph-1 scenario where you have a date night and he can't stop staring at you?!!)

You and Harry hadn't been dating for that long. In these beginning stages of your relationship it was obvious that everything still seemed fresh and new to you both. People would often tell you that this was the 'honeymoon period'; where neither of you could do wrong in the other's eyes. You'd have to agree with them. You probably shouldn't think so but everything about Park Junwon was perfect to you. From his awkward nature, that you often were accustomed to seeing when you two were in private, to his confidence that arose as soon as he stepped onto a stage, learning new things about him was your favourite thing to do.

Harry was a busy man. Extremely busy. But he made sure to make time for you. He wanted to give you as much of his time as he could without slacking-off from work. It wasn't always possible, but he gave it his best try.

Lately it seemed as though you had seen less of each other than usual, Harry was gearing up for new music to drop and even more importantly getting prepared for his upcoming tour. You were more than supportive in his endeavours and he didn't understand how he could be so lucky. You weren't the complaining type and even though you wanted to see him and be with him more than anything, you were considerate to his needs and the demands and pressure that his work put on him.

When anyone asked him about his girl, Harry couldn't help but to let that dreamy smile drift onto his face. He was sure he was falling in love with you, if he hadn't fallen already. He had no façade when it came to you. He was through with playing it cool and acting disinterested, at this stage and with you by his side he would tell everyone that he was enamoured. Harry was a naturally laid-back and chill person and to see him so swept up in the tides of love meant to those around him that this might be the real deal. You two could be the real deal in the long run.

Knowing he would be going on tour and leaving you behind was not something that Harry looked forward to. He had tried to convince you to come along with him, but you had vehemently denied his offer and told him you didn't want to be a distraction to him or his work. He knew you were right, but he wished you were selfish and had chosen to come with him.

There were only a few days left before he and his team would be packing up and leaving, he wanted to spend it with you but his schedule had meant that he would only be afforded one night with you before he was forced to go. Harry wanted to be extravagant about it all, something not in his nature but he thought it would be nice. Once again, you as the voice of reason were forced to calmly shoot-down his offer of taking you to a fancy restaurant with expensive food and tiny portions. It just wasn't you two. Instead you agreed to have a comfy night-in with movies and snuggling, the perfect date night in your opinion.

Harry turned up at the door of your apartment that night with a smile that could light up the night sky plastered onto his face. His oversized hoodie looked slightly worn and with the hood pulled up, the edges of his bleached blonde hair peeking out, he looked so adorable you wanted to squeal. Sunshine personified, you didn't understand how he could be so pure and gently beautiful. Your boyfriend was truly good through and through. You quickly dragged him into the apartment and pushed him onto the couch. You had already set up the movies and put snacks on the table that rested just in front of the two of you.

You got comfy on the opposite side of the couch, feet firmly planted in Harry's lap as the first movie started, grabbing a handful of sweets to nibble on. He laughed at the expression of your face as the opening credits rolled, you looked so excited. He couldn't look away. He really was in love with you.

Harry slowly looked at you, savouring the view of you, etching you into his brain. He wanted to remember this moment as you sat there, you were so beautiful. He wanted to give you everything he could. The changing expressions that crossed your face and your amusing commentary as the film progressed caused him to feel dizzy, how could have fallen so hard and fast for you?

You could feel his eyes on you, you'd given up trying to get him to watch the film after softly kicking him a few times and not managing to get any response other than him laughing to himself. Finally, you couldn't take it anymore and paused the film, turning to look at your doting boyfriend.

Your breath hitched slightly as you looked at him. Had all the stars always been in his eyes?

Harry's face was that of a man in love and in his eyes, there was only you. You imagined that your face had become somewhat similar. You were deeply and heart-wrenchingly in love with the man in front of you. There were no two ways about it. You knew it. Park Junwon was it for you.

For a moment you both just sat there, looking into each other's eyes. No one and nothing else mattered. In the whole universe only you and Harry existed in that moment.

Finally breaking the moment, slowly and cautiously, you moved your body inching towards Harry. He was impatient and reached forward, pulling you directly into his embrace. His body was warm and inviting and the material of his hoodie was comfy as you had expected, it was perfect to you. Just like him. You snuggled up into his side and put the movie on again. As you got engrossed in the movie Harry pulled you closer into his arms, pressing soft kisses to the crown of you head. He snuggled his face slightly into your soft and fragrant hair.

His caress was gentle and loving as he turned you to face him, his hands carefully tracing your features like an artist studying his muse. Harry pressed his lips to yours. This wasn't a fiery or passionate kiss by any means, this was different. This was slow, patient and wanting. This was a proclamation of love. Meant only for you to understand.

As you separated, Harry breathed out deeply. “I'm in love with you." He whispered, as though testing the taste of the words in his mouth. He nodded to himself, if there was one thing he was sure about, it was this. "I'm in love with you." He said it again, this time much louder and assuredly.

You shyly looked down; you had never had anyone look at you the way Harry did. "I'm in love with you." You replied, moving to cup his face with your hands, trailing your fingers down to his neck and lightly touching the tattoo at his throat, the very word 'love' etched there for all to see.

You leaned forward, pressing your lips to his neck where his tattoo lay, your feather-light kiss imprinting onto his skin. You moved away leaving a trail of kisses from his collarbones, to his neck and back to his face. Harry's eyes had closed from the sensation against his skin, he relished in the feeling.

"Harry," You called out his name, his eyes fluttering open at your voice, "I love you.”

When Ash Island is forced to participate as a producer for the latest season of Show Me the Money, he knows it won't be easy. But when his partner is you, a rising producer from H1GHR, maybe it won't be as bad as he thought.

Show Me the Money X Episode 1 – Round 1: Rapper Selection

The first round of Show Me the Money X is underway. Over 20,000 rappers auditioned, and today they are all gathered at the venue. Contestants rap a cappella in front of one of the producers, who will decide whether or not to give them a necklace.

Countless rappers are lined up in rows or sitting on benches lining the walls, waiting for their turn to be evaluated.

Staff: We will be announcing the next producers to come out now!

All the contestants turn to the large doors at the end of the large space.

Staff: Ash Island and Saf!

Light applause fills the room. Confusion can be seen on many contestants’ faces.

[Contestant 1: Sap? Saf? Never heard of her.]

[Contestant 2: Oh, I know Ash Island! Saf? Sorry, no I don’t know who that is.]

Saf: Well, guess I’ll just have to work harder for them to know me then!

She just laughs it off. Ash Island scoffs.

Ash Island: How many songs did you work on last year? If you work any harder your hands will fall off.

Ash Island and Saf part ways at the door, starting their evaluations on opposite sides of the room. Ash Island greets his first contestant with a bow and motions for him to begin. As he raps, Ash watches him, eyes partially covered by his bangs. The contestant, seeing Ash’s intense gaze, pauses for a moment partway through his rap. Without hesitation, Ash mutters a thank you and moves on to the next contestant.

[Contestant 1: His stare is very intimidating.]

[Contestant 2: He was so good-looking, I got distracted during my rap.]

This pattern continues: rapper begins, rapper makes eye contact with Ash, rapper messes up, Ash moves to the next rapper. Despite some rappers not even making a mistake, Ash still interrupts most of them with a small “thank you” and moves on.

In comparison, there almost seems to be an angelic glow surrounding Saf.

When a contestant makes a mistake, she smiles and nods, encouraging them to continue. With all the contestants she turns down, she still gives them small tips on how they can improve.

[Contestant 1: Even though I failed, she made it not feel as bad.]

[Contestant 2: She was so nice, I think I’m in love.]

Ash Island: Seems like a waste of your time to me.

Saf: No it wasn’t!

Ash Island: Come on, you’re experienced enough as a producer. I bet you could tell within the first ten seconds of their rap if they should pass or fail. Am I wrong?

Saf: No...

Ash Island: So ultimately you wasted both your time and theirs. What’s the point of all the formalities if you’re just going to fail them anyway? Either way, for them, the results are the same.

Saf appears to be contemplating this statement for a while, before finally coming up with a response.

Saf: But why do you consider being nice to people a waste of time?

“What was I even supposed to say to that?” Ash asks his labelmates in exasperation. Leellamarz and Changmo are laughing almost hysterically behind him.

“Man,” Changmo finally breathes. “If the whole world didn’t think you were a terrible person before, they sure do now.”

“Thank you, I really needed to hear that,” Ash deadpans. Why does he keep watching these clips with the guys, again? Oh right, they’re forcing him to.

“And that is why you should never argue with a girl, dude.” Hash gives Ash a solid pat on the shoulder as he says this. Lesson learned: don’t question anything a girl does.

You take a deep breath to calm yourself... then proceed to frantically dial Rohan on your phone.

Knowing what this is about, he answers in a monotone, “What do you want?”

Ignoring the rudeness of his greeting, you continue to freak out. “I can’t do this! What am I going to do? What am I going to say? Can I please, please just go back to the H1GHR studio to work with Haon?”

“Why are you asking me? You’re the one who made plans to meet with Jinyoung,” Rohan points out, using Ash’s real name.

After filming the first episode, you and Ash had decided it would be best for the two of you to get to know each other away from cameras, since you’d be working together for the next couple months. This is how you landed in your current situation, a bundle of nerves, standing outside the building of Ambition Musik.

“Well, I should not be held accountable for any choices I make in front of him. Obviously, I cannot be trusted!” you try telling your best friend.

Rohan sighs. “Why are you acting like this is your first time meeting him? You filmed the preview and the entire first episode together already. Plus, you’re there to talk about music, just treat him like any other artist you’ve worked with.”

“Okay, you’re right,” you take a moment to gain some composure. “I can do this. I can be normal. He’s just another person. There’s no need to freak out.” At this point, you’re not sure if you’re saying this to Rohan or yourself.

“There’s literally no reason you should be this nervous. So get in there, and please hang up. I’d like to eat my ramen before the noodles get all swollen.”

You laugh a little. “All right fine, I’ll see you later.” You get off the phone, feeling a bit better after talking to your best friend. With some of the tension in your shoulders relieved, you enter the building.

“Hi.”

“Do you want some water?”

“No, I’m good.”

“Oh, okay.”

…

Despite the abysmal start, your meetup with Ash was going surprisingly well. Once you were past the awkward small talk and got into your music, conversation flowed much more naturally.

“Whenever I hear this song I think ‘This is the type of music I want to make,’” you express, as your favorite song plays in Ash’s studio. “If I could write the perfect song, it would be something like this. The vocals, the music, the arrangement, everything about it is just so good.”

You let out a wistful sigh. “Too bad I could never come close to a masterpiece like this one.”

“Do you not like the music you’re making right now?” Ash asks, a bit puzzled. Funny, you’ve never really been asked or even asked yourself this question before, and you tell him that.

“It’s not like I hate all the songs I've produced. But I feel like they’ve always been made for someone else. I love working with Haon, I love producing for him. But ultimately, even with my name in the credits, it becomes his song. It’s all about his performance, his interpretation. Once it leaves the studio, it’s not mine, it’s not my music anymore. You know what I mean?” You’re not sure if all this is even making any sense. You’ve been rambling for so long, is he even listening at this point?

However, when you look up, he’s looking at you very intently. “Yeah, I get it. I felt that way on High School Rapper back then, and even now sometimes when I’m working on a song. I get caught up in thinking if people will like it, if my fans will like it, if it’ll chart well. But the whole point of your music is that it should be an expression of yourself. So when it’s not, it feels almost wrong.”

“Exactly.”

“Well, now’s our chance,” he begins. “It’s just you and me, with over 100 rappers to choose from. We can make whatever music we want.”

When you make eye contact, neither of you even realize you’re smiling at each other.
