i think the dead three are genuinely such interesting villains in bg3 - they've been an object of reoccurance throughout baldurs gate entirely , but theres such a nuance to thorm , orin , and gortash that makes them feel generally interesting .
despite the travesties he's caused , the motivations and story of ketheric is captivating . its tragic and sorrowful and shows how blinded someone can become due to the loss one feels when the person they consider their entire world perishes . upon his death , ill admit reading the note isobel wrote him that he kept on him pulled at my heart strings .
gortash is a weird case . admittedly he is my favourite of the dead three , but that comes from the background details he carries . stumbling upon his parents , finding the various notes hes left behind , his interactions with dark urge , and overall the deal and intentions he has with the player are very nice .
and then there is orin , granddaughter of sarevok who brought with her the nostalgia and memories of the first two games . she doesnt need tragic motivations like ketheric and to an extension gortash . she simply is driven by bhaal and her desire to paint the world red and that in and of itself makes her all the more compelling . she doesnt feel like a friend ; she feels like a threat . there is no appealing to her . only blood to be shed .
and to me , none of these characters are redeemable . theyre not pitiful or defendable . the things they have done are heinous yet understandable and that is what makes them compelling .

I keep imagining ketherics redemption arc that we were robbed of.
And I’m just imagining a cutscene to the final fight where Aylin is flying over head roaring out her war cry. And beneath her he’s charging into battle on an undead horse with Isobel sitting behind him and with determination in his eyes he addresses her like “I’ll shield you Isobel, no matter what happens to me don’t you dare stop fighting! I won’t lose you again! Don’t break Aylins heart again!”
And all Isobel can say in response is “yes dad.” As she lights up the battlefield made from the city streets with the moon maidens wrath.

It's kind of funny to me that in Baldur's Gate 3 they keep talking about how Ketheric is still alive even though he "died a hundred years ago" but the thing is, he's an elf. He's pretty old but clearly fit enough to go hand-to-hand with a demigoddess. So if he had just lived healthily and not pissed off any adventurers, he probably could have survived those hundred years just fine anyways. I know he had other reasons for getting immortality, but it's still funny to think that to an elf the hundred years gap is just like eleven years.

In Undeath Do We Never Part 𓉸ྀི | Angelica Thorm
art credit to @ shizuarts on Instagram <3
From a girl with a morbid fascination with history and necromancy, to a devoted follower… all the way to becoming an undead herself — all in pursuit of becoming the wife of the General she’d admired for so long. And now, so long as the plan continues on as Ketheric wishes — Angelica couldn’t be happier. Even coming out of her shell, making cheeky jokes about how she’d been decapitated before being reanimated by her husband before their marriage… much to Ketheric’s dismay.
・・・・・・・・・・
Happy Halloween everyone ! I’ve had an idea of getting my baldurs gate self insert drawn removing her head like this for a while — but it turned out even better than the different ways I imagined it :3 she looks gorgeous in shizu’s style and Ketheric’s reaction to her behavior is so cute 🥰 I love my old man so much. I can’t thank @ shizuarts on instagram for this enough <3

My favourite bit of BG3 lore is that Withers is legitimately responsible for the Dead Three, but he's probably too embarrassed to tell you, so every time you ask him to elaborate he just gives you a very stern, "Noooo."
Tumblr media
I also love that the reason he's responsible for their uprising is because he got bored. He literally got bored of his position as Lord of the Dead and wanted to retire, so when these three morally questionable humans came looking for godhood he was like, "Hmmm. Yes, okay. Here. Take my portfolios. Fight over them. I don't care. I quit."
Tumblr media
So after bowling with skulls in a friendly competition to decide who would get what portfolio, they took up his powers and wreaked havoc on the world. Only at that moment did Jergal, AKA Withers, AKA our precious Bone Daddy think, "I'm just now, internally, asking myself, in quite a worried way, whether I might've made an error."
Tumblr media
So he joins your merry band and watches your escapades, calmly twiddling his fingers while you clean up his mess. He's happy to lend his aid, even to the point that he'll bring Durge back to life if they reject Bhaal, even though he technically shouldn't. But he's Withers. The rules don't apply to him. If Ao doesn't like it, he can descend from the Heavens and say it to his rotting face.
Tumblr media
And the reason he saves Durge isn't necessarily because he likes them or because he's a morally good entity (though one certainly could make that argument), but because he wants to add insult to injury. He steals Bhaal's child with a big smile on his face, dubs them his Chosen, and praises them for rejecting all the power they were promised. But of course, he still doesn't tell them who he is—or rather who he was.
Tumblr media
Then, when all is said and done, he throws Tav and their companions a cute little party. No one knows it's probably half a thank you party and half a "Withers is bored again" party. And if anyone misbehaves, he'll get irritated and whisk them away. Because how dare they? He put a lot of work into that.
Tumblr media
And at the end of it all, he walks up to a mural of the Dead Three and basically goes, "Lmao. Thou didst fuck around, and thou didst find out." Just savagely roasting them.
Tumblr media
And then poof!
He waves them into non-existence.
