What animal groups do you classify brute wyverns as?
There’s too many options with descriptions too long to fit on a 12 answer poll so you’ll have to comment your answer on this one, sorry.
Also this is the last poll!

Already thought of two major mistakes I've made in the groupings
Ceadeus isn't a leviathan, it's literally a whale I have to move it to the Beast section. How did it take me contemplating the existence of the seacrown dolphin to remember this.
And Kestodon and Gastodon are clearly small brute wyverns not raptor wyverns why did I PUT THEM THERE /lh (also Gastodon is more similar to Banbaro than I previously realised which may or may not make placing easier, I haven't figured it out yet)

SPOILERS FOR MONSTER HUNTER WILDS I know you do more on the systemics side of spec-evo, but I wanted to see if you had any opinion of the star-ranking and general 'danger level' of monsters in Monster Hunter (as presented in the games).
I was going through the monster journals in past games and I realize how the star-ranking used for many of them is rather inconsistent (with Rise/Sunbreak changing a LOT of rankings in particular). So, I tried to make a 'Tier List' how dangerous or threatening each of the monsters (3rd gen and after due to how I feel the ecology is significantly more fleshed out after that point) are to human hunters and civilians that encounter them whilst foraging or as they travel between settlements (which often requires large herbivores as beasts of burden). It is also important to note that civilians include Felynes, as they are both smaller than humans and, given that other Lynians live out in the wilds, may be viewed as prey more regularly then humans. Note: I am also using this post as a brainstorming exercise for me to better visualize the effects that massive megafauna have on humans and broader ecosystems as a whole, so I apologize if it feel like I am spitballing at times.
Tier 0: Endemic Life
Virtually everything too small to really defend itself. An exterminator would likely be called, not a Hunter, if need be.
Tier 1: (★) → Aptonoth Tier. Generally non-aggressive and non-carnivorous (at least not the kind/size of carnivory an adult felyne needs to worry about).
Gen 3: Altaroth, Epioth, Gargwa, Slagtoth
Gen 4: Konchu, Larinoth, Moofah
Gen 5: Bombadgy, Gowngoat
Gen 6: Seikret, Ceratonoth, Gelidron, Porkeplume, Rafma
Tier 2: (★★) → Bullfango Tier. These mfs actively attack the hunter or have some clear potential to ruins a novice hunter's day while trying to carry wyvern eggs or powderstones. Felynes beware of some of these.
Gen 3: Bnahabra, Delex, Giggi, Rhenoplos, Uroktor
Gen 4: Zamite, Maccao
Gen 5: Gastodon, Kestodon, Shamos, Wulg, Wingdrakes, Boggi
Gen 6: Bulaqchi, Comaqchi, Dalthydon, Gajios, Kranodath, Talioth
Tier 3: (★★★) → Kut-Ku Tier. Start of the big boys. Assume I'm referring to the Greats when their species is listed. Human start to be viable prey options for some carnivores while felynes are definitely on the menu for most predators.
Gen 3: Jaggi, Baggi, Wroggi, Qurupeco, Ludroth, Arzuros, Lagombi, Volvidon
Gen 4: Seltas, Tetsucabra, Kecha Wacha
Gen 5: Jagras, Girros, Izuchi, Aknosom, Dodogama, Tzitzi, Kulu, Paolumu, Pukei-Pukei
Gen 6: Chatacabra, Lala Barina, Quematrice
Tier 4: (★★★★) → Khezu Tier. Beginning of the disproportionately large amount of large carnivores (compared to the lack of as many large herbivorous prey species for them).
Gen 3: Barroth, Nibelsnarf, Gobul, Gigginox
Gen 4: Zamtrios, Najarala, Nerscylla, Malfestio
Gen 5: Tetranadon, Jyuratodus, Radobaan, Bishaten, Somnacanth, Tobi-Kadachi
Gen 6: Balahara, Doshaguma, Rompopolo
Tier 5: (★★★★★) → Rathian Tier. This is where I start to be a bit controversial.
Gen 3: Uragaan, Duramboros
Gen 4: Seltas Queen, Mizutsune, Astalos
Gen 5: Anjanath, Banbaro, Beotodus, Garangolm
Gen 6: Ajarakan, Hirabami
Tier 6: (★★★★★★) → Rathalos Tier. Here we see most Flagships and generally what the community considers 'Apex Level' monsters. Some of which have known civilian kill-counts or are Ahtal-Ka (my bias, as while I love the monster, Idk if it's giant mech form should be counted or wtf to do with it considering how outlandish it is from an ecological and ethological perspective, so I am not including it for it's role as a threat).
Gen 3: Lagiacrus, Brachydios, Barioth, Agnaktor, Zinogre
Gen 4: Glavenus, Seregios, Ahtal-Ka
Gen 5: Magnamalo, Goss Harag, Almudron, Legiana, Lunagaron, Odogaron, Rakna-Kadaki
Gen 6: Uth Duna, Rey Dau, Nu Udra, Xu Wu
Tier 7: (★★★★★★★) → Kushala/Teostra Tier. This is where Rajang is allowed to 'tie' in a Turf War instead of steamrolling everything. Also, like everything here some mixture of huge, biochemical warfare or spoken of in lore as being disproportionately destructive.
Gen 3: Deviljho
Gen 4: Gore Magala, Gammoth
Gen 5: Bazelgeuse, Vaal Hazak, Namielle, Narwa, Ibushi
Gen 6: Jin Dahaad
Tier 8: (★★★★★★★★) → Akantor/Ukanlos Tier. Effectively godlike monsters, if the lore is to be considered in their respective games, and/or the apexes among apexes in whatever biome they live in (unless Dalamadur is nearby) and/or having disastrous impacts on ecosystems at an individual level (according to lore).
Gen 3: Cedeus, Amatsu
Gen 4: Shagaru Magala, Nakarkos, Valstrax
Gen 5: Nergigante, Velkhana, Malzeno
Gen 6: Arkveld
Tier 9: (★★★★★★★★★) → Fatalis Tier. Obviously, Fatalis is kinda considered like a deity among monsters, but I didn't have another reference point for 'literally the most dangerous without needing a siege battle'. Some are less overtly dangerous to encounter than others, but their presence nearby is an overt indicator that some calamity if about to occur which drives extreme civilian-wildlife conflict.
Gen 3: Alatreon, Dire Miralis
Gen 4: Gogmazios
Gen 5: Gaismagorm, Xeno'jiiva, Shara Ishvalda
Gen 6: Zoh Shia
Sieges: (★★★★★★★★★★) → Kaiju Tier. I don't know what to say about this beyond you need like an army for this mfs; they are a bit wonky in terms of their roles in their ecosystems compared to others.
Gen 3: Jhen Mohran
Gen 4: Dah'ren Mohran, Dalamadur
Gen 5: Zorah Magdaros, Kulve Taroth, Safi'jiiva
Gen 6: N/A
This is a pretty neat grouping! Generally monster danger levels can be pretty whacky because it has to take into account how dangerous a monster can be to hunt as well as how dangerous it is when it comes to human/wildlife interactions.
And the latter can very wildly from viewing people as prey items (khezu, nargacuga, etc), being aggressive towards people due to territoriality (Barroth, Raths, etc), being aggressive towards people due to negative human interaction (deadeye yian garuga, bloodbath diablos, etc), to just being something that you can’t really get rid of if it enters your city (lao shan lung, malzeno, etc).
How strong a monster actually is, isn’t usually taken into account. For instance despite being the same danger level, Mizutsune and Gravios are very obviously not equal in strength.
Anyways this was a neat ask

I thought Eliot’s were leviathans
Also kestodon and gastodon are in the same sub order of brute wyverns as banbaro I’m pretty sure
The GREAT MONSTER HUNTER RANKING! PART 1
Of all the video game franchises out there, none have captured my imagination or just in general really hooked me as much as the Monster Hunter series has.
It's funny, really. I remember picking up the first game in 2004 when I was just six, only to not get anywhere because back then I couldn't figure out any game that didn't explicitly tell me what to do/where to go (which might be why I played so many licensed games back then).
Then, more than a decade later, I played Monster Hunter: World. And by that point, I was well beyond needing everything and everyone to hold my hand. Now, I could appreciate this series for what it was: a world where you could fight a massive array of diverse creatures inspired by myth and nature, craft equally varied weapons and armor from parts harvested from each hunt, and in my case, fall in love with an ecosystem of fantastical proportions.
So naturally, Wilds is my most anticipated game of the year. And in celebration, I'm taking a look at almost every monster, and giving my thoughts on their looks and, if applicable, how it feels to fight them (fair warning, I've only played World, Generations Ultimate, and Rise).
So, let's get started with the monsters that debuted in the one that started it all:
The Herbivores:
Here we have all the plant-eating monsters at the thorough bottom of the food chain. Even the smallest meat-eaters stand more than a chance of taking them down. Still, that doesn't make them any less fascinating.
"So beautiful...I'm gonna eat it!"
The Aptonoth is the first monster any player will encounter, and it's a great way to communicate how this fantasy world takes a plethora of cues from prehistory as opposed to just sticking to the typical tropes. It's a very appealing design, being a Parasaurolophus with the tail of an Ankylosaur. It almost makes me wish it were in the fossil record. Definitely an 8/10.

"Here, the monsters dine on turtle soup!"
The Apceros is a desert-brand herbivore, and with the fortification to match. This time, the Ankylosaur features extend to the entirety of the body. It's not quite as creative as Aptonoth, but it's still got that prehistoric charm. 5.5/10.
Really, I'd just like to note how the first two herbivores would be near-unstoppable in the real world. Any person would have all their bones broken by a pissed-off specimen of either species. But that just tells you how brutal the world of MH can be that they're still at the bottom of the pecking order.

"Oh, deer..."
Kelbi are...not all that fascinating. While it's amusing to hear how they may have inspired Unicorn-like myths in this world, there's a certain mono-horned horse that fits that bill way better later on. These guys are just...deer. Though I find it a little weird/amusing that the recent games don't allow you to kill them. Wonder why? 2/10.

"A most plant-based porker"
Now, HERE'S a less dull mammal herbivore right here! The Mosswine carries that prehistoric influence with that rather odd Pachycephalosaur-like dome on its head, as well as the neat symbiosis with moss that gives it its name. Sure, it's just an average-sized pig other than that, but it still has its charm. And yes, I am aware of the giant Mosswine quest. That's just hilarious. 5/10.
"So nice and floofy!"
First of all, Popo is such a cute name. And these are some cute animals, too! They look like little mammoths crossed with musk oxen, complete with big honking tusks. But its those stumpy noses with the hair hiding their eyes that just exudes adorable charm! Out of all the herbivores we've seen in the wild, these are the ones I'd want to hug the most (though they are a bit aggressive). 8/10.

"The reindeer Santa doesn't talk about"
Anteka are a lot like the Kelbi, in that they're fairly standard forest ungulates with a couple fantastical features, in this case being moose-elk. But they have a couple things over their mainland counterparts. For one thing, they fight back, they have an almost comical combo of a mustache and goatee (HA!), and those horns sure look ornate! Among herbivores, bigger is indeed better. 6/10.

"Could have sworn I saw something like this in Scotland"
The Epioth is, by far, one of my favorite Herbivore designs as of this writing. There's just something very eye-catching about it being a plesiosaur with distinctly koi fish-like details, right down to the appealing patterns. It really does feel like the kind of creature I could watch swim in an aquarium for hours and never get tired of how serene it all is. It's a shame they're stuck in the third generation due ot being inseperable from the water combat that dominated those games. Yeah, that's never coming back, not with how janky it was. Sure, I'm open to miracles, but I just don't see it working. At least we have no reason to hurt these beautiful monsters. 9/10.

"There's a brick wall with your name on it!"
On the other side of the spectrum, we have the Rhenoplos, which seems to take all our dated depictions of ceratopsians and roll them into one animal. Not the most interesting design, it's a little too much on the rhino side of things (plus they charge at EVERYONE), though the big ears are a nice flourish to indicate a sense it uses to compensate for terrible sight. 5/10.

"It's not a hippo if it's not obliterating anything it sees and hears."
Slagtoths get a leg-up on the Rhenoplos for merit of originality. Sure, that huge droopy flap of skin is doing most of the heavy lifting, but the hippo-like look and that subtle ceratopsian crest on its head come together to make a stand-out herbivore. Plus, it's heightened aggression is a nice nod to how hippos are the embodiment of zero chill. 6/10.

"The Great Valley is THAT way."
I really want to like the Larinoth, and I do, but something about it frustrates me nowadays. It's a sauropod, but its almost just as much of a pushover as the rest of the herbivores. For me, that just fits the absurd idea that Sauropods were cannon fodder for the neighboring predators, completely ignoring how they were nature's living kaiju during their time. But as monsters isolated from their pitiful spot on the food chain, they're a fun design for a fictional Sauropod. 8/10.
You'll run out of excuses one day, Capcom. Soon, you'll have an Elder Dragon that looks like a Brachiosaurus on steroids.

"Our heads hurt."
The Kestodon are basically souped-up Pachycephalosaurs. Nice headgear, but that's really it. 4/10.

"Keep attacking! ALWAYS KEEP ATTACKING!"
Meanwhile, Gastodon is a much more interesting design than its predecessor. They too look like Pachycephalosaurs, but instead of a bony dome on their heads, they have huge plumes of feathers in the shape of a dome, with small horns on each side of it. In practice, it makes them look almost part-bison. This, combined with their borderline-suicidal tendencies to mob hunters that slightly ticked them off, make them a solid win. 7/10.

"The big monsters got their goat."
Gowngoats are a fun concept. Not only does their fur look like a gown, as per the name, but it also kind of looks like an anteater's hairbrush-like tail. Not at all imposing, but definitely cute. I'd pet one for a fee. 6/10.
Next up, Neopterons, Carapaceans, and Temnocerans!
Index:

Neopterons, Carapaceans, Temnocerans

Brackets Are Here! (Repost)
I made a pretty significant oversight in my last version of this post; I had to make a few more cuts to the lineup, but it should be good to go now! The final (hopefully for real this time) list can be found here!
If you submitted a candidate please verify that the image and name that I used are correct and suitable!!!! (Ctrl+F is your friend!)
If you find a mistake please let me know, and I will either explain or correct it. Additionally, you are welcome to suggest a replacement image of OFFICIAL art!
I will leave it open for a week or so for everyone to review, after which voting will begin and everything will be locked in! So verify that everything looks good with your candidates, reblog if you haven't yet, and get ready to vote!
Oh, and blacklist "saurnament promotion" if you don't want to see repeated reblogs from me!

" So, uh . . . what kind of things in particular do you research? Besides kestodon herds that you inevitably have to run from and a crazy Kulu. "
"Hm, that's a really broad question..." Ava took a moment to think. "Believe it or not, I was mostly there for the Kulu! Bird wyverns are my primary study focus, especially the flightless species. I know, by Hunter standards, most of them are nothing special, but they're some of the most successful monsters out there! They fill so many different ecological niches, and many of them are extremely effective predators and scavengers. Even the poor Jaggis..."

Hearing an unfamiliar voice,Fenrir dropped the kestodon he was dragging back to Haboda and turned around to face the source of the voice. But what he faced wasn’t something he expected, let alone to be out here… from what the Lunagaron could it was an Alatreon…mostly. From what the fanged wyvern could see,the alatreon before him looked to have parts from many other monsters… how and when Thanatos got them mattered little to Fenrir. What was more important,at least to Fenrir was how the elder dragon knew his name without ever having met before now. “You know me?” Fenrir asked slightly lowering his guard. The lunagaron has no recollection of ever catching Thanatos’s scent until now. Maybe the alatreon knew something about the Qurios Fenrir has seen fluttering around recently… but not right now. The fanged wyvern made a mental note to asked about it later.
…Until he decided to ask about the Qurio showing up again and deal with the abnormality before it escalates into something disastrous. “Nevermind that. Do you know something about these tiny red flying things?” The Lunagaron asked, trying to describe the Qurio as accurately as he could, having no memory of a previous encounter with them.

The Stains Of Time (Open RP)
The moon was shining down brightly onto the citadel. In area 9,Fenrir was sleeping after a particularly long day of hunting and chasing out intruders from his territory. Around midnight,he struggled to sleep.. he tried shutting his eyes tightly…then he started tossing and turning until he could handle it no longer. The fanged wyvern got up and went towards his other den… one he made with the help of his now deceased mate in area 4 beside the old castle and behind several broken wooden planks. Dashing past a sleeping Espinas in area 12 without waking it,and continuing past area 2 where he would usually sit to clear his mind just before the bridge that leads into area 3 of the old castle,he stopped just before going passed the crumbled wall of the old castle in area 4. Taking a brief look around of his surroundings, the fanged wyvern huffed with his heart heavy with guilt and chest feeling super tight and sat down.
“…Hey …Beautiful night, isn’t it? …Do you remember how we met? …I remember nearly driving my claws through your chest. …Then, you knocked me onto my back,Seeing those beautiful eyes of yours glaring into mine. Didn’t think I’d actually start to fall in love with you then. …I remember how we went hunting together. *chuckle* Even fought together. You fought beautifully, love. …Do you remember the song I used to sing to you Before we slept under the moonlight together? …How’re the pups doing, love? …Bet they’re real lucky to have a mother like you…*sigh* …There isn’t a moment that goes by when I’m not thinking about you. …If only I was there to protect you. …I… I love you with every fiber of my being. …I’m sorry I wasn’t there… …I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you… our pups… our family…” The Lunagaron said as he was on the verge of tears.
He didn’t care if someone was listening or if he was being watched,he needed to do this and part of the fanged wyvern wanted to sing out the song Fenrir used to serenade his mate with… but the other did not want to relive those painful memories… Of all his past failures, his failure as a mate and father haunted him the most. With tears now pouring from his eyes and ears lowered,he stood bipedally and howled loudly out of guilt and sorrow so loud,it echoed throughout the entire locale of the citadel.
As if right on cue with his grieving howl,Lightning boomed in the distance and rain come pouring down almost immediately after. The fanged wyvern knew a thunderstorm was approaching. Fenrir got back down on all fours,he dashed back to his den in area 9. The Lunagaron kept running while trying to keep himself from slipping on the now wet and muddy terrain. The shame he felt for not being there to protect his family, weighed heavily on the Lunagaron’s heart. Never again does Fenrir want to feel the pain of losing a loved one because he wasn’t there to protect them…

@admiral-craymen replied to your post “Kestodon like watching flowers for cruelty and mashed potatoes.”
What are the kestodon doing now?
They're in the middle of an election!
But their votes are secret and their candidates are named after their internal organs so voting isn't really about choosing candidates -- it's about deciding if you're a big yud or a little yud
