Upcoming Magical Girl Projects
Magical girl fans are finally eating good after years of starvation. So good, in fact, that I decided to make a list of magical girl projects in development. This is a continually updating list - all series that have since been released can be found here.
Tumblr media
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie - Walpurgisnacht Rising - The fourth PMMM movie, which will pick up where Rebellion's massive cliffhanger left off. While originally slated for late 2024, it has since been delayed to 2025.
Tumblr media
Maebashi Witches - A TV original production by Sunrise, Maebashi Witches is a coming of age story focused on a quintet of high schoolers who are approached by a strange and mysterious frog named Keroppe, who recruits them to become the titular group. Now working in a magical flower shop, the girls use the "Witchverse" pocket dimension to grant people's wishes with the power of song and dance. Has the same writer as Bocchi the Rock (Erika Yoshida) and is premiering April 6, 2025.
Tumblr media
Princession Orchestra - A TV original coming in spring 2025, Princession Orchestra is based on a concept by Akifumi Kaneko, one of Symphogear's co-creators. The land of Alicepia's peace is destroyed when monsters called Jammerwocks attack, prompting a trio of young girls to step up the plate to protect the realm.
Tumblr media
Winx Club - The western magical girl classic is getting a CGI reboot. While comments by Iginio Straffi imply that certain characters who were introduced later in the original series (such as Roxy and Nabu) will appear earlier, no specific plot details have been revealed so far. The series is coming to Netflix late 2025.
Tumblr media
New Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt - Panty & Stocking is getting a second season after over a decade that's coming out sometime in 2025. A teaser trailer confirmed the OG voice cast's return and announced the production staff, but plot details are still unclear.
Tumblr media
Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. season two - Magilumiere is getting a second season, which was announced after the broadcast of season one's finale. No other details have been revealed.
Tumblr media
Petitcure ~Precure Fairies~ - A Precure spinoff focusing on the franchise's various mascots is coming. It's a series of dialogue-less shorts that will be released weekly on YouTube starting on April 3.
Tumblr media
Untitled Symphogear movie - A new Symphogear movie was announced in late 2023. However, no further details have been revealed.
Tumblr media
Hua Xianzi: Zhi Mofa Xiang Dui Lun - A co-production between Tencent Video and Toei Animation's Shanghai branch, this anime is being billed as a "remake" of Lunlun the Flower Fairy. The heroine is Rumi, an apprentice at a homemade perfume studio who awakens as a Flower Child due to the power of a family heirloom. She's tasked with collecting and purifying the Rainbow Flower's scattered petals, only to clash with another Flower Child along the way and discover the surprising past of her feline mentor/sidekick.
Tumblr media
Maho no Shimai Lulutto Lily - Studio Pierrot, which has made a variety of magical girl anime from TV originals like Creamy Mami to adaptations such as Tokyo Mew Mew, has announced that they're creating a new TV original magical girl anime. No specific plot details have been disclosed, but the caption for the teaser image ("I want you to sing once more...") implies that it'll be a magical idol anime. In March, the title was revealed, with the rough (and unofficial) romanization being Magical Sisters Lulutto Lily. The only revealed characters are a duo of cat mascots, Uguisu and Azuki.
Tumblr media
Lolirock season three - After Lolirock's second season ended with a cliffhanger all the way back in 2017, it seemed like the story would never get a proper conclusion. However, the series's creator and director, Jean-Louis Vandestoc, announced on his Instagram in 2023 that creative meetings for a third season have begun.
Tumblr media
Magic Knight Rayearth revival - TMS Entertainment is making a new Magic Knight Rayearth anime in honor of the franchise's 30th anniversary. Unfortunately, it's currently unknown what the format will be.
Tumblr media
Cute High Earth Defense Club Haikara! - Hot on the heels of the franchise's 10th anniversary movie, Cute High Earth Defense Club is getting a new anime series. Besides Shinji Takamatsu directing the series like he did with the movie and the first three seasons, no concrete details have been revealed.
Tumblr media
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS Gun Blaze Vengeance - A new installment in the seminal Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha franchise, this will be a new TV anime to celebrate the series's 20th anniversary. No other details are confirmed, but it will presumably be connected to the upcoming EXCEEDS manga that will begin in 2025.
Tumblr media
Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card season two - The sequel to the magical girl classic is getting a second season that will adapt the rest of the manga.
Tumblr media
Magical Girl holoWitches - A multimedia project starring six VTubers as fictionalized versions of themselves who work as both streamers and magical girls who save people when they get trapped in the magical Holocas World. There was a four minute extended trailer in May 2024, but the anime's proper premiere date is unknown.
Tumblr media
New Ojamajo Doremi thing - As part of the celebrations for the franchise's 25th anniversary, Toei Animation released two new music videos for the series' 1st OP and 4th ED with the promise that a new project will be made if the videos reach a combined 5 million views. This goal has since been met. Due to the girls being adults in the videos, the new project will presumably be an adaptation of the Ojamajo Doremi 16-20's sequel series of light novels.

We're still goated! Yes they handled fatphobia very delicately and with a lot of genuine consideration and body positivity throughout. The fat girl visitor is even a textual lesbian with a girlfriend such that I hope we see her again literally just for that. Well fucking done Maebashi Witches. It could've gone more based and had Azu be comfortable enough in her own skin to open up to the others, but there's 9 episodes left so I mean we'll see. They get mad enough at Keroppe at the end of the episode for me to think who knows maybe they actually will do an antagonist mascot animal plot point - it's not something I'm counting on and I have no strong opinion one way or the other on what I want the show to do, but you know, hypotheticals. I have very comfortably remembered Yuina's name because I love her, Azu because she's distinctive and has had focus already, and Choco just because she's cute and her name is easy. I do not confidently remember the other twos' names yet, but next episode seems to be about one of them, so hey here's to me getting her name down next week.

Note
From what I've seen in the Maebashi Witches tag, the topic of fatphobia was handled with carefulness and tact in episode 3. The episode also explores Azu's backstory from when she was recruited by Keroppe with strong message of body positivity at the end. It also takes a more realistic direction with Azu's character growth by not immediately making her comfortable with her self image and wanting to open up to the other wittches. Having confidence in oneself's appearance is a process that takes time to properly grow. Added bonus: The plus sized visitor to the flower shop is an explicitly confirmed lesbian with a girlfriend.
Good. Guess I won't have to toss yet another anime in the trash this time around, thank goodness.
Also, people are comparing this anime not just to Artiswitch, but Wonder Egg Priority as well, which I hope it's not the case, since that anime fumbled so epicly.

First Impression: Maebashi Witches
Tumblr media
A high school girl stumbles into a flower shop designed by Shaft Studios and is met with a blue rose, a fast-talking pink-haired girl, the promise of a song, and…a fight among the employees? Just what exactly is this place? Cut to the outside world. Yuina, she of the pink hair, is the kind of girl who giggles as she runs, and monologues encouragement to herself throughout the day. When she gets home, a talking orange frog plushie greets her from the shadows (ominous much?) and invites her to become a wish-granting witch because, “we need someone like you” (again, ominous much?). She’s not much bothered one way or the other, but decides to take him up on the offer when he promises to help her achieve the most super max vibing photo of her life if she joins up. Yuina aspires to be a photographer—no, that’s not quite right. She aspires to take photos with really amazing vibes. That’s it. Her entire dream. Anyhow, Mr Frogger whisks her off to the magical realm where she meets four other girls who each embody a trope and learns that by “someone like you,” what Keroppe (as she names him) meant was, a fifth warm body to get the magic shop materialization spell to work, and someone outgoing, ditzy, and a dash reckless to make things interesting for him. And…it works! The Shaft style shop comes into being, and the first customer arrives. And leaves pretty soon after, when the fight breaks out. Have they blown it? Luckily for them, Kermit has powers to manipulate not only space, but time too! After a refreshing picnic and pep talk, they reset the clock and try again. Can they figure out how to grant the girl’s wish? Will there be music involved? And just what is her wish anyway?

It's still pretty sparsely populated as a one off breed, but I did not remember there being quite so many Hoppers...
HOPPER[ホッパー] just is what it is... kinda overly literal yet vague?
SAKURA HOP[サクラホップ] "Cherry(Blossom) Hop" straight forward enough.
KINDER HOP[キンダーホップ] as in the German Kinder:"Children" so reads something like "Child Hop." But that feels a little off somehow.. like, what does that have to do with giving them the pixie wings?? Why are they swarming like a colony of bats in the image?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CLICK[クリック] no idea why this is the name, don't see how it plays into any of its themes
USHIROME DESU[ウシロメデス] from ushirome[後眼] lit."back eye(ball)" which, other than being literal, is the name of a type of yokai.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
TOBI-KASAGO[トビカサゴ] kasago[笠子] is a scorpionfish or marbled-rockfish and tobi[飛び] meaning "flying"/"leaping" so the name seems to read as"Flying Scropionfish" which is kind of a clever way to mash up dragon's skin texture with hopper's jumping gimmick.
WAGA HAI[ワガハイ] from waga hai[我輩] an older and now lesser used first person pronoun. Very possible it's a reference to Waga Hai wa Neko de aru[吾輩は猫であ] "I Am A Cat" a novel by formative modernist Japanese novelist, Natsume Soseki. The NA localization edited the encyclopedia art to remove the reference to alcohol and the monster being drunk.
EMERALD EYE[エメラルドアイ] this one was actually untouched in English. Straight forward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
WAIRO[ワイロ] seemingly from wairo[賄賂]: "bribery"even though he looks more like he's ready to mug someone than pay them off... he's just got a knife...
PACHIKURI[パチクリ] pachikuri[ぱちくり] a kind of onomatopoeia for blinking in surprise. but I have no idea how you get that from a lemur/aye-aye and a yeti...
SPRINGER[スプリンガー] just what it looks like, the English got it right too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HANE-BOKKURI[ハネボックリ] from hane[跳ね]: "jumping(ing)" and bokkuri[木履] are a kind of Japanese style wooden sandal with a shiny lacquered finish worn in traditional women's fashion
KEROPPER[ケロッパー] Kero and Hopper, where Kero is the sound a frog makes.

More details about Maebashi Witches:
The anime is produced by Sunrise, with Maebashi Witches being the studio's 3rd original magical girl series after Classicaloid and Artiswitch
The plot centers on 5 high school girls who unexpectedly come together when they meet a strange talking who takes the quintet to a magic flower shop where they're made witches/idols-in-training to help the populace's hopes and dreams working on scripts (who did surprise sleeper hit Bochhi The Rock!)
The series is directed by Yamamoto (who has helmed quite a few Shoujo anime) and Erika Yoshida (who
The series is a take on the Pretty Series franchise with its' titular group being transported to another dimension known as Witchverse, similar to how characters transform within the Pretty Series installments.
The frog mascot (Keroppe) is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita who also voiced Beethoven from Classicaloid
Ooooohh hell yeah interesting!!!

More info about Maebashi Witches:
The story is set against the backdrop of Maebashi City in Gunma Prefecture where first-year high school freshman Yuma Akagi along with 4 other girls find themselves scouted by a strange frog named Keroppe to become witches-in-training/idol singers, teleporting the quintet to a magic flower ship so they can make peoples' wishes come true.
The series is produced by Sunrise and will be the division's 3rd magical girl anime (after Classicaloid and Artiswitch, which I've mentioned before). To me, the premise feels like a combo of Artiswitch with The Idolm@ster which is an interesting mix.
WOAHHHHHHHHH THIS IS THE RADDEST SOUNDING 2020S MAGICAL GIRL ANIME IVE HEARD OF IN A WHILE!!!!!
I'll definitely have to keep this one in mind for when I'm more in the mood to watch Magical Girl anime again!
