Get ready for Carry On Sapphic Week 2023!

What is Carry On Sapphic Week?

A week in April dedicated to Carry On fan content showcasing sapphic characters and ships on tumblr and ao3, with daily prompts to inspire you!

Fics, art, moodboards, headcanons, any fan content is welcome! No sign-ups necessary, just post during the week, using the prompts if you like, and tag it carry on sapphic week or cosw 2023 and @ us so we can see everything and reblog it here!

What does sapphic mean?

While the definition can vary, the widest definition of sapphicism is anyone who relates to womanhood and loving women. Lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, queer, and other wlw identities fall under this umbrella. Asexual or aromantic sapphics also exist (hi, hello, that’s me), and it should go without saying but trans women can be sapphic too. Some nonbinary people identity as sapphic, while others don’t.

Any characters from the carryonverse who fall under the sapphic umbrella- canonically or not- are welcome! If you headcanon somebody as a lesbian, bi, pan or something else, go ahead and create something! Fem! versions of characters who are canonically men are also accepted.

When is Carry On Sapphic Week?

Last year Carry On Sapphic Week fell in January, but this year I’ve decided the dates will be Monday 24th April to Sunday 30th April, which is Lesbian Visibility Week in the UK.

I will share the prompt list on January 15th to give people plenty of time to prepare!

Rules

The only rule is to tag things appropriately! For example potential triggers and nsfw content should be tagged and on tumblr it should be placed below a cut.

You don’t need to follow the prompts if you don’t wish to, and can create as much or as little as you like in whichever medium(s) you prefer!

Of course, you don’t need to be sapphic to participate.

Figure It Out

for day two of @carry-on-sapphic-week, today's prompts were sweet and adopt!

"Trixie…” Keris is using her grown-up voice, a term she hates, but there’s really no other way to describe it. Arms crossed, feet planted, and her tone reminds me of my mum when I figured out a spell to stick my little brothers to the ceiling.

“What’s up?” I respond, choosing to keep my tone casual as I toss my keys into the bowl beside the door and toe out of my shoes.

“That had better not be a cat carrier. I expressly told you we cannot get a cat.”

Well, she’s got me there.

“The landlord never has to know."

“He will know.”

“We could pay him off?"

“Trixie.” Grown-up voice again.

The carrier is getting really heavy, so I put it down on the table. A little soot-coloured paw peeks out between the bars, then retreats and is replaced by a whiskery nose. Keris puts her head in her hands.

“Are you really mad at me?” I ask nervously. “Cos I can return her if you-”

“I’m more mad about how cute she is.” Keris mumbles. She looks up and glares at the carrier. “You’re making this really difficult, you know.” A soft meow in response makes her groan.

I cringe at what I’m about to say next, allergic to sincerity but feeling like it’s needed right now. “I thought, you know… this would be the first step to us having a family.”

Keris softens, stepping forward and pulling me into a warm kiss.

“That’s very sweet of you,” she says, pulling back but keeping her hands cupping my face. I instinctively wrap my arms around her waist, pulling her closer as she continues, “and I do really want a cat, but it doesn’t fix the landlord situation.”

“We could always spell him into agreeing to make an exception?” I suggest.

“That’s highly immoral, Trix.” Keris chides.

“So is the landlord.” I shrug. “I mean, look at our rent! And the mould.”

Keris wrinkles her nose at that. The mould in the upstairs bathroom seems somehow magic-resistant, and the landlord is still refusing to fix it, instead just telling us to keep the windows open. In January.

“One bad act doesn’t cancel out the other.” She counterpoints. “Also, I think it’s illegal.” I groan, then relent.

“Okay. So no cats allowed, the landlord won’t get rid of the mould, and the rent is ridiculous anyway… I’m hearing we need to move.”

“Easier said than done.” Keris says, opening up the cat carrier and picking up the kitten, a small grey sphynx cat. She rubs between her ears and she starts to purr.

“Eh, we’ll figure it out.” I shrug. Keris looks at me, her expression tired but full of affection, our new kitten cradled in her arms. I think I’ve won this battle.

“Has she got a name?”

“Nope. Why, do you have an idea?”

Keris hums thoughtfully for a moment. “Morgana?"

“Cute!” I grin. “And it’s a swear.”

“Don’t ruin it!” She laughs. It’s like the clouds part, a sunbeam I could lay in all day. I suddenly feel like I can see our whole future before us, just standing in our kitchen with our new kitten, even with the uncertainty around us. We've got each other. “I suppose we’ll just have to figure it out.” Keris acquiesces. I smile back.

“I suppose we will.”

Six Sentence Sunday

i have two snippets to share! but this post is kinda long, so i'll put them under a cut.

so, the first is from the last chapter of Shoulder To Shoulder, which i'll be posting on wednesday:

“Fuck you Thatcher, or screw you Thatcher?” Agatha asks, propping up the sign she’s working on for us all to see.

“Oh, they’re both so good.” Shepard says wistfully, pinning the fabric for his new dress to a mannequin. I’m impressed by his ability to talk with such emotion with half a dozen pins held between his teeth. We’re on the top floor of the bookshop, which doubles as Niamh’s home, paint and glitter strewn all about the place.

and if you didn't see, yesterday i posted the bonus kerixie fic set in the same AU! here's the link to that.

then i also have a snippet from what i'll be working on after this fic is done, my nanowrimo project from last year that i didn't finish. in case you weren't here or missed me talking about it last year, it's a retelling of the aftermath of the Trojan War, following Astyanax, the son of Hector and Andromache, who died as a baby in some myths but survived in others. he bounces around Greece looking for his mother, who was taken after the war, and along the way runs into Briseis and Hermione, who both met Andromache and tell him what they experienced during that time. so there are a three stories in one!

here's a bit of Hermione's POV. i adore writing her, she's a bit like the way i write Agatha, judgemental and yet dissatisfied with the expectations put on her. it's very fun to write bitchy characters who eventually meet someone they can let their guard down around, and who then turn out to be quite nice.

I stood at the balcony, looking out over the courtyard, but there was still no sign of my husband. Looking straight across I could see the men’s half of the palace, but every window was dark. My mother’s rope was coiled in the corner, mocking me. Her words echoed in my mind and I couldn’t help but laugh dismissively. What did it matter if it was sturdy, when Neoptolemus was so small? He would be light as a feather.

Six Sentence Sunday

thanks for the tag @imagineacoolusername! you tagged my side blog @nausikaaa but i'll post here.

today i am taking a sort-of break from Shoulder To Shoulder to write my kerixie spin-off. basically, there were some Trixie and Keris scenes I really wanted to write for my fic that just wouldn't work from Simon or Baz's perspective, so I decided to write a companion piece to the fic of the same year through Keris's eyes, Keris being from the mining village rather than a member of LGSM.

so, here's the opening of that! it's still untitled, but i'm working on that.

The word yes is past my lips before I have a chance to really think it through, and as soon as I've spoken, I wish I could take it back and try again.

But that's not a very reasonable request when you're being proposed to, so I just hope Rhys doesn't notice how fast I answered, or how loud and animated my voice was.

I knew this was coming, of course. He's terrible at keeping secrets. That's exactly why my response was so fast; he'd barely popped the question before I dove in and got it over with. I should have rehearsed my response, then I wouldn't feel so neurotic about it.

Seven Sentence Sunday

hello all! thank you for the tags @youarenevertooold @aroace-genderfluid-sheep @artsyunderstudy and @ic3-que3n! and everyone else who has been tagging me these past few weeks.

my COTTA fic is coming to a close, and i just can't bring myself to write the last chapter and accept it's over! so for now, i'm working on my Kerixie spin-off, which i'm aiming to post between the last two chapters. here's a snippet of that:

“I’ll get you a bag of peas for that.” I say, frowning at Dev’s black eye.

“You’ve done more than enough.” He looks at me like he’s seeing me for the first time. Another boy who had no time for me at school, although Niall and I would sometimes share companionable silence in the library. I brush his adoration off impatiently.

“Don’t thank me, thank LGSM.”

Seven Sentence Sunday

thanks for tagging me @youarenevertooold @artsyunderstudy @alexalexinii and @forabeatofadrum! there aren't many hours left of this sunday and i didn't think i would post anything as i'm super sick with a cold, but i ended up writing a little bit of Keris's POV for a bonus kerixie chapter of my COTTA fic. there's a while to wait before it will be published though!

"I've had to fight for my rights myself. I was at Greenham Common protesting American warheads and fought with the police there, and you know what? It was the most alive I ever felt! That's why the women are running the show, because we actually know what we're doing. And I know especially well. I bet those gay people know what they're doing too, they've been fighting plenty. So if people are going to laugh at you, I suggest you grow a pair and stand up for yourself like we've all been doing!"

i have... thoughts on how the Pride movie approached Lesbians Against Pit Closures, and many of the lesbian characters in general, which i will cover under the cut.

so. the film had a tendency to treat the lesbians as annoying and preachy, and make their attempts at independence seem at best laughable or at worst needlessly divisive. i never liked that, and reading the book on the real events only made it worse.

as the book explains, LGSM could be a loud, politically divided, male dominated group that many women felt they couldn't speak up in. LAPC was necessary for those who felt silenced in the original group or never joined to begin with due to a discomfort with men. the two groups eventually operated alongside one another and you could be a member of both if you were a gay woman, but there were plenty of women who were only a member of one or the other.

and this isn't to criticise LGSM. as i said, they still welcomed women and worked alongside LAPC. many of the men from LGSM stood picketing alongside LAPC when a bar stopped running women's only nights. LAPC twinned with a different village in the north of England, so the existence of the two groups overall helped more people and spread their reach further. the distaste the men have for the idea of a women's group in the movie was nowhere near as strong as it appears to have been in real life.

and we know many lesbians did indeed feel unwelcome around men. they reported being uniquely disliked by the straight men of Onllwyn. while the miners soon got accustomed to the gay men, having at least some common ground with them, they had no interest in lesbians. a sort of "you're not like me, or available to me, so why are you here?" vibe. eventually this attitude seemed to fade and disappear, but by then some women had given up trying to befriend them and had stopped visiting.

however, a lot of the women in Onllwyn were very happy to see the lesbians, as many were queer themselves. some of the lesbians of the group reported having relationships of varying degrees with the Welsh women, and one of the women interviewed in the book was sixteen at the time and came out later in life, being accepted due to LGSM's role in her family's life. today, the village seems very welcoming to lesbians, but that wasn't always the case.

the lesbians also brought with them politics and feminism. while many Welsh women were already politically active (see above when i mentioned Greenham Common, a real protest staged by women of all classes and sexualities before the strikes, and of course they were involved in the miner's strikes), the lesbians fanned that flame and introduced them to new concepts and issues.

Trixie and Keris are my tributes to those two kinds of women. the lesbians of London who got political and struck out on their own, and the lesbians of Wales who only realised they were gay once LGSM arrived and shook up their lives.

anyway. this wound up being longer than i intended.

First Line Analysis

Rules: post the first lines of your last 10 fics/chapters posted on AO3 (if you have less than 10 fics posted, post the first lines of all your fics) and try to draw some conclusions.

The only time Simon feels balanced is when there's a sword in his hand. (a fist amidst the hands, a snowbaz fic about Simon's struggle with dyspraxia)

Simon’s phone rings at an ungodly hour. (comfortable coats, calico cats, and collapsible canes, a fluffy snowbaz fic)

Jonathan and I have decided to keep journals again, so that we may refresh our memories of shorthand. (the sky set to burst, a dracula and war of the worlds crossover)

I never thought it would be an art class that finished me off. (rosebud girl, a fem!snowbaz fic)

Under the pale glow of a full moon, I trail my fingers in the gently lapping water of the harbour and contemplate my future. (spitfire, a pirate Agatha AU)

I don’t think I’ve ever felt pain like I feel when I wake up. (blow on the tinder, a Natasha lives AU)

The early autumn air is heavy with the sweet scent of crocuses in bloom. (oh, to be alone with you, a greek myth fic about Helen, Clytemnestra, Penelope, and their respective suitors)

The radio is already on when I wander into the kitchen, but Penny is nowhere to be found. (shoulder to shoulder, hand to hand, a snowbaz 80s AU)

The word yes is past my lips before I have a chance to really think it through, and as soon as I've spoken, I wish I could take it back and try again. (and now it seems i'm falling, falling for her, a kerixie spin off of the last fic)

Hermione learned a lot from her father. (blood and whiskey, a western AU for a truly niche greek mythology poly trio. like. this is the ONLY fic for one of these characters)

Analysis

with number 9 as the exception that proves the rule, i tend to opt for a short opening. i like snappy one liner to interest the reader. and pose a question: why is Simon's phone ringing so early? Why is Natasha in pain? Where is Penny? What did Hermione's dad teach her? with number 9, i hoped the run-on sentence would convey the anxious way Keris is thinking.

i've always thought it best to start a fic in the middle of the action, but looking through these, quite a few actually open with descriptions. i guess it depends on whether what i'm writing is fast paced or slower and more scenic. number 5 and 7, for example, are a lot more sensory and introspective, so i take my time to set the scene.

number 3 is definitely an outlier because it's structured as a diary, so opens the way somebody might open a diary, not a traditional narrative.

i don't know why, but the similar openings of "i never thought" and "i don't think" is interesting to me. starting with a character's expectations being subverted. huh.
