THE WORST THING ABOUT these parties is his failure to dodge every face he doesn't want to see. though the entire first floor of the derege manor is open to the guests of their little soiree, most have flocked to the atrium, the circular entry hall under the domed stained glass skylight, to orbit around his father.

ducking away to the library, generally, is a decently safe move to get away from the crowd. it is keon's safe haven: just light enough that it doesn't feel like a cave, just dark enough that the first editions remain safely preserved. the fireplace crackles in front of his favorite couch and armchair, lit easily by a snap of his fingers. his father would admonish him if he found out keon was in here, but at the moment, he's too overstimulated by the faces and voices to care.

just — ten minutes. just give him ten minutes of quiet goddamned solitude.

of course, because god knows exactly how to punish him, the blessed respite doesn't last long. keon looks over from where he sits, legs crossed with a book in one hand, and gives the intruder a nasty side-eye — which only gets nastier once he realizes who it is. ❝ what do you want? ❞

All I hope, Josh, is that you're not distracted on Sunday when the Bills play the 49rs and come back from the bye week with a healed Keon Coleman, a healed Spencer Brown, and a hopefully activated Matt Milano!

I apologize for nothing, non-American Football fan followers. I told ya'll when the season started that this is the time of year where a team of 53 starters who I've never met impact my mental health for about 5 months or so.

Oh! And Congrats Josh! Now all the man needs is a puppy (and a ring) and I think we've found the happiest man alive!

Unseasoned Preseason with Bland Buffalo Bills

The two worst things to do about preseason are overreact and not care.  That covers everything.  I suppose it’s possible to respond in a measured manner, but that doesn’t seem like fun.  Freaking out about the inability to move or stop the ball against indifferent starters or energetic marginal players is not the best use of allotted blood pressure spikes.

Playing a collision sport without getting hurt is preseason’s goal, so anyone soothsaying regarding the regular schedule will guess wrong.  Yet there are enough clues to make aspiring football psychics feel apprehensive.  Discerning observers know what inconsequential moments deserve to provoke shrieking.

The common refrain that it’s preseason is chanted as a mantra throughout a trio of meaninglessness.  Even Star Wars has created better recent trilogies.  Yet a vague dismissal of the rehearsal process overlooks specific jitters.  The lack of caring should not prompt relaxation.  The Bills have specific problems on display that can’t be countered with a general dismissal.

The Josh Allen Tease Preseason Game will dominate memories except for how we already forgot it.  Rain is the only foe who can stop him.  Pretending Allen would play was a ruse so Mitchell Trubisky could have an August revenge game against Pittsburgh.  Missing receivers before getting hurt wasn’t the plan.  Jerry’s revenge date with the dermatologist didn’t backfire this much.

The preseason offense isn’t vanilla: that’s an insult to the smooth elixir which enhances anything sweet.  It’s not a synonym for flavorless, which is just the start of misinterpretation.  

A one-sided affair doesn’t bother half of participants.  The other team isn’t game-planning, either.  Yet some preseason foes are able to look like this isn’t the first time they blocked and ran.

The simulacrum can’t be shrugged off even as we forget this score upon seeing it.  Individual trends spur anxiety, not the exhibition record.  Getting to try things out is why they bother to play an AI-style knockoff.

Setting his own precedent means the possibility of falling short.  Stressed fans are merely meeting the coach’s standard about taking sneak previews seriously.  Sean McDermott’s focus on preparation leads to wondering if his team is doing the same.  Ascertaining what they were doing all training camp has been an early challenge.

It’s easy to read too much into an incomplete script.  Elements around the franchise player are in what we can generously classify as a transitional phase.  Fretting they’ve already peaked is a common sensation before this year’s actual schedule begins.  Nobody’s seen much to dissuade fears even in nonchalant efforts.

The imitation contests feature real unease about the number one receiver, namely if the Bills have one.  There’s a lot of pressure on a group that fans are prepared to blame for disappointment.

Fans get a practice run at seeing new potential favorites.  Keon Coleman has gotten to wear the gear even if he hasn’t done much in it.  The ceaseless argument between those who note the games aren’t real and those who think this is a time to at least show something continues unabated.  The experience of simply being in uniform reflects preseason’s chief value, namely getting the first time out of the way.  Now, the next step is fielding passes.

We could all use reassurance, especially at this tense time when we’ve been without football for awhile yet approach the absence’s end.  That’s why the faithful are still sighing about an offensive line that looks like they won a charity auction in the first scrimmage.  Those who dismiss underwhelming play because it’s preseason argue that the players need more snaps to form a cohesive union.  But that’s what these summer moments are for.  Pointless games may not be useless.

Alarm about the inability to score touchdowns could all go away in games that affect standings.  The only time preseason records get cited is when they’re ironic compared to games that count.  Announcers treasure when successful clubs have unimpressive Augusts so they have something to smirk about late in blowouts.  By contrast, the 2008 Detroit Lions won four games if the preseason counts, although the ensuing 16 losses probably canceled out excitement about just when they went undefeated.  

Seeing how they look is the true score.  The Bills could work through their unfortunate tendencies by the actual start.  Yet it’s still concerning how they don’t look like they have worked together before.  Being on a remedial schedule creates a sense of urgency.  The sense of procrastination permeates an entire organization that should be dedicated to not wasting Allen’s career.

There’s nothing to do but calmly panic.  Professional worriers hope twitching about summer football simulations turns out to be irrational.  There are still chances to fix multiple issues, which is nice for the eternal optimist.

        as the winds & waves roll through, keon basks beneath the pale moonlight with his eyes fluttered shut & his chin jutted toward the sky. breathing in the salty seas like it’s the last time he plans to do so — he dreams. he wishes. squeezing the lighthouse’s railing with all his might. until reality sinks in, bittersweet undertones swelling within his chest when he blinks & stares out into the vast horizon. realizing, accepting that him leaving norbury isn’t a reality he can afford right now. so he’s left to wonder & daydream. his arms spreading wide as though he’s on the titanic, letting the winds take him to another place that isn’t here. those five minutes of bliss soon taken from him once he spots someone in the distance, a familiar silhouette that’s haloed from the bonfire behind them.  ❛ hey ! ❜  keon calls out,  ❛ it’s about damn time, yeah ! i’ve been up here for minutes. like two. ❜

               after  performance,  the  last  person  he  had  expected  to  see  amongst  the  crowd  had  been  the  other;  so  he  headed  straight  in  their  direction,  grabbing  their  hand  and  pulling  them  to  a  more  private  area  so  they  could  talk  in  peace.  ❛  what,  the  fuck,  are  you  doing  here  ?!  ❜

he feels old— the weight of his years hanging around his neck like a millstone instead of gracing his brow like a laurel crown. cortair hadn’t been particularly gentle to his body as he grew older, still eating and drinking and fighting like a man twenty years his junior, strengthened by magic that sparked in his veins. there were no delusions of living forever and he’d still ached in the way we all do as we age but it felt as if the years caught up to him at once with that taste of life without the ice in his veins, unable to continue to preserve him in frozen stasis.

the sword wound in his thigh continues to heal though he feels it now in a way he’d avoided. he’d numbed himself to most of the pain, freezing the ends of nerves to keep them from registering much outside of discomfort. now, there’s a clear struggle in the way his knuckles go white around the gnarled end of the cane as he pushes himself to stand, the leg feeling stiff when he moves from the desk he’d been sitting at.

“if i held with religion, i’d say this last was a clear sign at god’s displeasure with his majesty.” or perhaps their favor with him; while the rest of the keep was thrown into chaos, basradu hid away to play godling with whatever powers he’d usurped. “or another trick to keep our minds distracted.” that felt the more likely culprit; “too bad i’m not easily distracted.”

his attention turns to artair, “set up a meeting with the other warden houses. keon will be expecting it.” ( probably be irritated that it took me this long to call it. ) “and speak to whichever costinui boy that will succeed his father; we need new blood in the mix and lord costinui is not one to go against the grain. i will speak to the ladies ghita.”

❝ YES, KINDLY SHUT UP. thank you. ❞ the voice rings out sharp and clear from behind finlay's interrogators as keon stalks in from the dark entry hallway. there are flecks of blood on his cheek. otherwise, his body language is apathetic — irritated at best, urgent only in his desire to get this over with.

idiots. his father's rivals always think they're doing something by snatching those who yap at the edges of keon's circle. hoping they'd overheard something important, no doubt.

they come at him all at once. he counts six: four foot soldiers and two lieutenants, judging by the way they move around each other. footsteps and the click-click of cocking guns echoes through the uninsulated cavern of a warehouse. he doesn't give them enough time to train the weapons on him all at once: he's already ducking down at the second click, pulling the closest man off his feet and snapping his neck the second his back falls into keon's chest. ( YOU'RE NOT A KILLER. ) the room erupts in an explosion of gunfire and keon pulls the dead man over himself to soak the bullets in; he can't see them, but he feels their fear. hears them. 'this isn't worth it—' one of them says. they're cut off by a barked 'shut up and fi–' that cannot be finished because its speaker is being rushed headfirst and disarmed.

he makes short work of them after their lieutenants are dead. one crumples after a hard punch to the liver and a knee to the face that knocks free several teeth. the other two try to dart past him, but he catches both of their arms and flings them to the ground, taking them out with bullets to the head. BANG BANG.

easy work. he doesn't let the nausea pinching the pit of his stomach show; instead he stalks toward finlay, cream-white suit splattered and smeared with red, and kneels with a pearl-handled pocket knife flicked open to cut the cable ties. ❝ going for the annoying hostage maneuver, hm? ❞

if Keon could get past his burning hatred of all things Aldish he and Bastion might be able to get along ok just off of their need to push the boundries of what Pymary can do. Then again Keons a sociopath and Bastions only kind of one so it may be a non starter

Now that’s a rare pair. I think Bastion would be highly attracted to Keon in the thirty seconds before he discovered Keon killed Elan; then Bastion would want to avenge his sickly little pal.

Or rather his brain was rejecting the idea of birds being a good thing for the universe. "You will not and cannot make me accept birds as 'essential', they are too dangerous and I think we should replace them all with bubbles or something not threatening."

Rei (Kukui & Burnet son) headcanons because when there’s a new kid around I can’t stop myself

One time Ash and his Pokémon try to babysit Rei and needless to say, that doesn’t go well. The result is pretty much what happens in the episode in which Ash tries to do chores in the Kukui household on his own (food burning, washing machines leaking, etc). But no one really cares because Rei is visibly happy to spend time with big brother Ash and his smile is the biggest when Kukui and Burnet come home to find the house in chaos. They’re already used to it. (Ash and his Pokémon do clean up everything while K&B take Rei outside for a nap, though)

Rei’s first words are some Pokémon attack moves that he hears his dad repeat often in his lab.

Burnet’s Munchlax is Rei’s favorite cuddle buddy in the Kukui household.

Ash is naturally Rei’s biggest role model as he grows up (and Ash makes sure to give him a call and visit as often as he can).

Rei will get at least 1 little sibling (Keone) but it’s possible that there will be even 1 or 2 more (because Burnet has canonically said she loves big families).

As a little kid Rei loves Pokémon, especially the ones that are around him in the lab, but one time an accident happens, (I haven’t decided the details yet but he might f. ex. get too close to Incineroar’s Flamethrower) and after that he's scared of them for a good while and needs quite a lot of coaxing from his parents before he gets close to them again. Luckily his parents are good at helping him get over that.

When it’s time for his Pokémon journey, Rei chooses Popplio as his starter because as much as he loves his parents and his big brother, he wants to make clear that he’s not a copy of them but a person with his own interests and goals.

When he grows up he does feel some pressure because his parents are famous poke professors and his big brother is the Alola champion and he’s worried he doesn't live up to people’s expectations. To help with that, Kukui and Burnet always emphasize that he can be whatever he wants, and encourage him with his own goals, screw what others think.

Twins Sign Matt Shoemaker To Deal.

The Minnesota Twins made another move as pitchers and catchers report on Thursday in Fort Myers. They signed veteran right-hander Matt Shoemaker to a one-year, $2 million deal. He can also make an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses. Shoemaker is a good starting pitcher when healthy. He has dealt with a forearm injury, a knee injury, and took a line drive off his face in 2016. He has a career 3.86 ERA over eight seasons with the Angels and Blue Jays. He owned a 4.71 ERA in six starts for the Blue Jays in 2020. He averages eight strikeouts per nine innings. Shoemaker features a two-seamer and a four-seamer between 92-93 mph, a splitter in the upper-80′s, and a slider in the lower-80′s. The Twins rotation continues to add depth as Jose Berrios, Kenta Maeda, and Michael Pineda figure to be the top-three starters. JA Happ, Matt Shoemaker appear to round out the rotation with guys like Randy Dobnak, Lewis Thorpe, and Devin Smeltzer getting innings as the year goes on. Remember, the minor league guys didn’t throw 100-150 innings last year and there will likely be an innings limit in minor league ball in 2021. 

The Twins also announced the remainder of their non-roster invitees. Andrew Albers, Daniel Coulombe, Brandon Waddell, and Charlie Barnes are lefties invited. Derek Law, Luke Farrell, Griffin Jax, Juan Minaya, and Glen Sparkman are the right-handers. David Banuelos, Caleb Hamilton, and Tomas Telis will be the catchers. Royce Lewis, JT Riddle, Tzu-Wei Lin are the infielders. Keon Broxton, Trevor Larnach, and Rob Refsnyder are the outfielders. There are also a few guys invited for minor league depth in camp. Tom Hackimer, Robinson Leyer, Andrew Vasquez, Drew Maggi, Aaron Sabato, and Zander Wiel are the big names on that list. I expect the Twins to invite a few more veteran relievers as the market for bullpen arms shakes out before camp starts.
