Photos by @amivitale. Last week, I was honored to be sharing my work on @OlPejeta's feed in honor of my new global ambassadorship with the conservancy. Please follow them if you are not already! Rhinoceroses are the second-largest land mammals, eclipsed only by elephants. Despite their size, they have, for the most part, a gentle temperament. They are mostly solitary animals that prefer to live an independent life. However, they have their own territories and will fight to protect their territories. The size differs somewhat between males and females. A female will require an area of about one and four square miles. Males require less room since they roam in search of a mate. They can reach speeds of about 55 kilometres per hour (or around 35 miles per hour). Because their eyesight is not good, they can make blind charges and will sometimes run straight into a tree! Ol Pejeta is an incredible place to view rhino behavior. They have nearly 150 black rhinos, the last two northern white rhinos and 39 southern white rhinos. In the video you see a Bat-eared Fox (Otocyon Megalotis) in an African field that is quickly joined by another fox and, at the top of the screen, a deer casually munches and walks by. An interesting fact about these foxes; apparently they mate for life. #repost @neenatailor via @PhotoAroundApp A rare sighting of of these bat-eared fox. Because they’re nocturnal it is so strange to see in the early hours of the morning. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to the last two known northern white rhinos, 39 southern white rhinos and it has the largest black rhino population in central and eastern Africa. However, rhinos aren’t the only species that call Ol Pejeta home. You can witness large herds of elephants, giraffes, hippos, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, Thomson's gazelles, baboons and so much more. It is home to the biggest mammals and the tiniest of ants. Several endangered species such as the Grevy’s zebra and Beisa oryx can also be found on the Kenyan plains. In 2014, they achieved IUCN Green List status, defining excellence in managing valuable natural areas, one of only two conservancies in Africa to be awarded this prestigious status. In the early 1970s the population of eastern black rhinos stood at about 20,000 animals but because of industrial scale poaching, tragically, their numbers plummeted to less than 350 left by the late ‘80s! In 1993, Ol Pejeta brought 20 black rhinos to establish its black rhino conservation program and today, just 3 decades later, they have 3 generations of rhinos. Soon, they will celebrate a huge milestone in black rhino conservation with the birth of their 150th black rhino. This incredible achievement was because of the work of their dedicated rangers, staff, and all of you, the generous donors and supporters. Today, @olpejeta is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East and Central Africa. They are also home to 39 southern white rhinos and the last two northern white rhinos. Ol Pejeta still has a few rhinos left to name so if you are interested, please get in touch with them. While that is something very special, any help makes a huge difference to their work, so please consider donating.
