馬卡迪卡迪鹽沼 Makgadikgadi Pan

我在波札那沒有參加旅行團，是自己從馬翁Maun搭公車去格韋塔Gweta，因為這裡離馬卡迪卡迪(Makgadikgadi Pan)和恩賽(Nxai Pan)國家公園不遠，住在鎮上的Gweta Lodge，就可以參加他們的國家公園一日獵遊game drive活動。

我��六點半抱著毯子出發，因為天還沒亮還好冷，尤其是開車的時候，風吹起來那種刺骨的冷。不過才在前往國家公園的大馬路上，就已經看到長頸鹿、鴕鳥和角馬了。

今天因為我們的��導聽說斑馬遷徙已經到了河邊，所以我們今天開比較遠到另外的Phuduhudu這個入口進去，從這裡到河邊比較近，不然一般他們會走離lodge比較近的Malokwane入口。

當我們停在國家公園入口買門票時，還看到一隻大象過馬路，心裡一邊希望他走過來靠近我們一點，另一邊又希望他不要走太過來以免危險，哈哈！

進入國家公園後，一路上一直看到很多斑馬在往河道方向移動，畢竟這裡是斑馬遷徙的主場地啊！

我們老是看到斑馬和長頸鹿以及角馬待在一起，他們三種動物一個看得遠，一個嗅覺好，一個聽力佳，正好可以互相配合幫助。

我們花了好長一段時間才到河邊，這裡的沙地真是非常考驗開車人的功力，是我在非洲這一路上最震盪搖晃的一次，甚至有一段路人會像鐘擺一樣大幅左右搖擺呢！

乾枯的河道很寬，據說雨季洪水時期會是滿水位的，但現在已經有一年多的乾旱了，河床已經沒有河水，只有幾漥淺淺的池水。

斑馬就一群群三三兩兩的前來喝水，原來斑馬遷徙不是我以為影片中那種角馬奮不顧身的過河，而是慢慢的一路一直走來。

河床上到處都是斑馬。

沿著河道走，也還有不少其他動物，大彎角羚Kudu、黑斑羚Impala、黑背豺狼Jackly、小岩羚steenbok、狐獴mongoose等。

然後我們看到天上盤旋了不少禿鷹，才發現不遠處有一具被吃掉一半的小象屍體，大自然的食物鏈。

路上遇到其他人互相交換資訊，他們說他們營地那邊有一大��河馬，於是我們又趕去前面的河床找河馬了。

這裡整個河床上躺了一大群一大群的河馬，感覺睡成堆的河馬像是小饅頭，又像是地瓜。旁邊還有另一群大象，我們甚至看到一隻大象追著兩隻小河馬跑，小河馬們趕緊逃進了水池裡，其實河馬跑得也不慢嘛！

最常看到的黑斑羚羊(Impala)因為屁股後面的黑線條和尾巴形成一個M，也被戲稱為‘’麥當勞‘’。

Gweta Lodge還有其他活動，不過活動都是要至少三人才會成行，我算是蠻幸運的，遇到一對美國夫妻因為前一天自己開車去Nxai Pan太辛苦，於是Makgadikgadi就放棄自己開車，直接參加旅館的game drive，這才讓我們的獵遊成行。

Each year, over two million wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores trek from the southern Serengeti to the lush green grasses of the Masai Mara. Known as one of the seven wonders of the world, the great migration is an iconic safari must-see.

Travel to Tsavo for a true "Out of Africa" Experience

We stayed in a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills.  But that isn't really the start of our adventure.  It really started in Mombasa and getting picked up by our guide/driver Sammy.  He will be with us for the next 6 days from Mombasa to Tsavo to Amboseli National Park and then onto Nairobi.  Sammy is friendly, easy to talk to and knowledgeable about not just mammals but about all the birds that we are seeing.  This was especially important to Kati who loves to photograph all the birds in Africa.  It took us a couple of hours to get to our lodge in Tsavo East and the time went by quickly. We stayed at Satao Camp and were lucky enough to get the tent closest and facing a very popular water hole.  Like watching "Animal TV", over the next couple of days and nights we saw herds of elephants, antelope, giraffes, hippos and warthogs walk out of the bush and come to this waterhole.  This was the start of our adventure, and we were happy to be back in Africa.

Why Tsavo?

Tsavo is the place where there were two man-eating lions roamed and ate over 100 people in 1898 as depicted in the movie The Ghost and the Darkness starring Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas.  Tsavo East is the largest game park in Kenya, and it was a choice we had to make: Tsavo East or Tsavo West.  We chose Tsavo East mainly because of Satao Camp, and we are happy we did.  Over the next 4 days we saw lions after a kill, the red elephants of Tsavo, hippos, giraffes, and a leopard in a tree with its kill.  The landscape was surreal.  Dusty and dry, Tsavo needed the rains.  But they never came while we were there.  We also found The Real Africa, like the one described by Isak Dinesen's book Out of Africa.   Set out in the middle of the bush, our camp and the water hole were perfectly situated for the game drives and to see a multitude of animals coming and going from miles away to drink. We could experience the joy of the elephants coming over a ridge and seeing the water hole.  Herds of zebra and antelope.  We even had a genet in the dining room that came one night looking for food.  With the fire roaring, we ate delicious food for breakfast, lunch and dinner and had game drives most mornings and evenings.  We had a whole day game drive on one of the days and it proved spectacular as we saw 5 lions on a hunt, and then they came and sat down.  We were so close as they relaxed, slept and kept vigil.  This was an incredible experience and we really felt that we found The Real Africa.     This was why we came back to Africa.  It did not have the multitude of animals like Masai Mara, but it had the look and feel of a real African adventure.  Don't get me wrong, if there was one place, I would recommend seeing the Big 5 it would be the Masai Mara or to experience the Great Migration.  But we were looking for something different.  Something that I had not experienced since I lived in Africa. Something that was totally unexpected.  And Tsavo delivered.

An Incredible Adventure

This was the fourth time Kati and I have been to Kenya.  We have also explored Uganda and Egypt, and I have lived for over 4 years in Zimbabwe and almost a year in South Africa.  We have also traveled to Cape Verde, Botswana, and Morocco, so we are not strangers to the African continent. But this time we wanted something different.  We wanted an "Out of Africa" adventure filled with animals, tented camps and great scenery.  And we got just that. With our tent, beautifully decorated with old Africa furnishings and overlooking the water hole, we were able to view animals from a couple of kilometers away traveling through the dusty bush.  The obvious joy that elephants experience when finally viewing the water hold was incredible.  They would start to trot, flapping their ears almost with smiles on their faces.  Big Tuskers, mothers with their young, and single bulls all came and went. We never tired of it. In the evenings, Impala filled the camp while jackals were on the prowl.  Hippos left the water hole and went to graze all night returning in the morning and elephants took over.  Zebra, water buck and giraffe all visited.  And there was a genet who would come into the dining room looking for something to eat before heading back into the bush. From our tent and around the camp we also saw owls, eagles and oryx. This all happened before we even left for a game drive.  This was a nightly occurrence as we lie in bed watching the animals come and go in front of us.  It was amazing. There were many camps to choose from in Tsavo, but we chose Satao Camp.  It gave us that great adventure and "Out of Africa" feeling, and the cost was good.  We found the Real Africa and will return here in the future.

Game Drives

We had two private game drives a day set up.  Both in the morning and evening.  Sammy our guide suggested we take one day and go further into the park and spend the day.  Satao Camp prepared a lunch box for us and we set out on our journey.  Tsavo was incredibly dry and dusty.  The red earth filled with air as we looked for the iconic African animals.  Sammy was outstanding and knowledgeable about all the animals, the park, birds and where to go for the best views.  One of the best aspects of Tsavo is that it is uncrowded, and we were virtually alone most of the time we were there. The final day, as we were almost out of the park, looking for a cheetah, we heard that there was a leopard in a tree with its kill.  Sammy asked if we wanted to go back.  Of course we did!  A leopard in a tree?  That was on my want list for a long time.  Having seen 4 leopards previously, they were all on the ground I really wanted to see a leopard with a kill up in a tree. We raced to where it was and by the time we got there, the leopard left the tree.  But as we got discouraged, Sammy said he spotted it in another tree.  It had climbed up to keep an eye on his kill, and there he was.  Sammy spotted it and we were overjoyed as we snapped photos. Sammy was a great guide filled with knowledge and willing to share.  We loved spending our time with him and were sad when we left him in Nairobi.

Finally we found the Leopard in a tree. He had his kill in a nearby tree and kept watch.

Our Final Word

After four incredible days, we had to say goodbye to Tsavo.  It was filled with iconic African wildlife including leopards, lions, elephants, giraffe, kudu, waterbuck, impala, zebra, oryx, owls, eagles and a whole lot more.  We continued our adventure to Amboseli National Park which is famous for its large herds of elephants and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.  We will cover that part of the adventure in another post. We wanted to find the Real Africa and we did.  We wanted that true Out of Africa experience, and we got it in Tsavo.  We ate delicious food under the African moon, watched animals at the water hole, had incredible game drives with Sammy our guide every day and still had time to read, write and relax.  This adventure checked off all the boxes for us and we look forward to returning someday. Einen guten Rutsch ins Neue Jahr!

Herrschaften und Oukies!

Heute ging es bereits vor dem Frühstück los. Eine frühmorgendliche Pirschfahrt im Geländewagen stand auf dem Programm.

Die Unterkunft hat sowohl morgens, als auch abends eine Pirschfahrt im Chobe Nationalpark im Angebot. Außerdem die Bootstour auf dem Chobe und einen Tagesausflug zu den Victoria Falls.

Wir überlegten lange hin und her und entschieden uns dann einfach Beides zu buchen. Morgens ist die Chance auf Raubkatzen größer, deshalb der Gamedrive, und abends auf Elefantenherden, dann wollten wir die Bootstour machen.

Wir wollten natürlich unbedingt beides sehen, außerdem wenn wir schon mal hier sind, wollen wir natürlich auch viel Zeit im Chobe Nationalpark verbringen. Wegen des Regens in der Nacht mussten wir leider mit schlechteren Tierbesichtigungen rechnen.

Gegen 5.30 trafen wir am vereinbarten Treffpunkt, vor der Rezeption, ein und eine Gruppe von Mitfahrern hat sich schnell versammelt. Bald darauf fährt ein 4x4 Fahrzeug vor und der Fahrer stellt sich als Andrew vor und heißt uns zu der Tour willkommen.

Wir besteigen das Fahrzeug und schnell wird klar, dass die Anzahl der Personen die vorhandenen Plätze übersteigt. Bald darauf fährt ein zweites Fahrzeug vor und jetzt stellt sich heraus, dass Fahrzeug Nummer 1 eine Halbtagestour fährt.

Also, bis auf 4 Leute, alle wieder rauskraxeln und in Fahrzeug Nummer 2 wieder reinkraxeln. Das hätte der gute Andrew ja auch gleich sagen können.

Nach diesem leicht chaotischem Start geht es mit einer kleinen Verspätung endlich los. Es ist natürlich noch recht frisch und wir sind froh um unsere Fleecejacken.

Andere Fahrgäste sind nicht so gut präpariert und fragen gleich nach wenigen Metern nach warmen Decken. Amateure!

Das Fahrzeug ist bis auf den letzten Platz, mit 10 Gästen voll besetzt. Bis auf einen allein reisenden Spanier sind wir die einzigen Europäer auf der Tour.

In rund 10 minütiger Fahrt erreichen wir, über die A 33, den Eingang des Chobe Nationalparks. Dem Teil des Chobe Nationalpark am Chobeufer zwischen Kasane und Ngoma Bridge.

Über das Sedudu Gate, dem Eingangstor zur Chobe Riverfront, will unser Guide mit uns in den Nationalpark. Das Gate hat seinen Namen von dem Sidudu Rivier, das, 3 Kilometer weiter, in den Chobe mündet.

Wir halten am Tor und unser Fahrer erledigt im Büro alle Formalitäten, zusammen mit unzähligen weiteren Guides, die alle fast voll besetzte Autos haben.

Der Rummel, der sich hier uns darbietet, ist erschreckend. In den letzten 9 Jahren hat sich die Anzahl der Touristen, die den Chobe Nationalpark besuchen wollen, vervielfacht. Michael witzelt: mehr Menschen als Tiere - und das sollte sich auch bewahrheiten.

Ebenfalls drastisch verändert hat sich die Gästestruktur. Waren es früher meist Europäer und die üblichen Gruppen der Asiaten, so sind es heute locker 95 % schwarze Besucher. Man sieht deutlich, dass sich etwas verändert hat.

Unser Guide kommt zurück und alles rast in halsbrecherischem Tempo in den Park. Auch hier sind wir wieder total entsetzt. Es geht natürlich um Katzen, Katzen, Katzen. Dabei gibt es nichts langweiligeres als Löwen. Sie liegen immer irgendwo unter einem Baum und bewegen sich nicht.

Allerdings sind die vorherrschenden Sichtungen die vollbesetzten Gamedrivewagen, die überall in zweier oder dreier Kolonen umher fahren.

Von dem üblichen, früher vorherrschenden Tiefsand ist nicht mehr viel vorhanden. Plattgewalzt von den Massen an Pirschfahrzeugen, die hier tagtäglich durchpreschen.

Die Riverfront ist der Teil des Chobe Nationalparks, der am stärksten frequentiert wird. Das liegt in erster Linie an der Nähe zu den Lodges in Kasane, denn in wenigen Minuten ist man von den Lodges mitten im Park.

Obwohl wir früh am Morgen unterwegs sind und es noch angenehm kühl ist, haben wir bis hier nur wenig Tiere gesehen. Von den Elefanten gab es bisher nur die uns bekannten Elefantenknödel und ein Skelett.

Wir erreichen das Ufer des Chobe Rivers etwa auf der Höhe, des Zusammenfluss von Northern Channel und Southern Channel. Unten am Chobe River hoffen wir nun auf die großen Elefantenherden, für die der Chobe Nationalparks ja bekannt ist.

Aber wir sehen nur in der Ferne am Ufer drei Hippos außerhalb des Wassers, von denen eines auch mal kurz schaut, sonst sehen wir nur deren dicke Hinterteile.

Wir sind ziemlich erstaunt, wie wenig Tiere wir sehen, heißt es doch immer, der Chobe habe eine Garantie für Elefanten.

Ein Stück weiter dann mal eine Giraffe und eine Gruppe Büffel direkt am Weg. Die schauen uns mit großen Augen misstrauisch an. Es sind alte, schlecht gelaunte Dagga Boys, die sich im Alter isolieren.

Die „River Bank"-Route direkt am Chobeufer ist als Einbahnstraße ausgewiesen. Die darf nur vom Gate in Richtung Serondela Picknick Site gefahren werden. Den Rückweg zum Gate muss man über die Waldpiste nehmen.

Wir fahren kreuz und quer durch diesen Teil des 11698 km² großen Chobe Nationalparks, aber sehen nur vereinzelt Tiere.

Plötzlich bricht operative Hektik aus: Löwen sollen gesehen worden sein. Aus allen Himmelrichtungen preschen nun die Autos zu der Stelle. Wir haben "Glück" und sind als dritter Wagen vor Ort.

Innerhalb Sekunden sind wir umzingelt von weiteren Fahrzeugen. Nichts geht mehr. Es wird hin und her rangiert, um die bestmögliche Position zu ergattern. Was für ein Chaos!

Wir erreichen die Serondela Picknick Site. Alle Mann aussteigen. Wir machen eine urige Kaffee-/Teepause mitten im Busch. Aber warum darf man hier eigentlich aussteigen? Der Picknickplatz ist nicht eingezäunt. Was hält den Löwen davon ab am Picknick teilzunehmen?

Der Bereich nicht sonderlich übersichtlich. Überall sind Büsche, hinter denen es sich unauffällig anschleichen ließe. Auch führt der Weg zu den steinernen Toilettenhäuschen vorbei an besagten Büschen.

Die Betontische stehen am Hochufer des Chobe Rivers. Unser Guide reicht uns Kekse und Kaffee in Pappbechern. Andere Unternehmen scheinen da umweltbewusster zu sein, dort gibt es die Getränke aus Metalltassen.

Ein Familie Vervet Monkeys hat sich die Picknick Site als Beuterevier ausgesucht und versucht die Reisegruppen zu beklauen. In der buchstäblichen "Affengeschwindigkeit" hopsen sie von Wagen zu Wagen und zum Baum und vor dort auf die Tische.

Ein Blick auf die Uhr verrät uns, dass schon 2/3 der Pirschfahrt rum sind. Mit Serondela haben wir den westlichsten Punkt unserer Pirschfahrt erreicht. Bevor die lhaha Campsite errichtet wurde, war die heutige Serondela Picknick Site der staatliche Campingplatz.

Da auch unser Fahrer gerne noch eine Runde am Ufer entlang drehen möchte, packen wir zusammen, vielleicht haben wir ja doch noch Glück.

Nach ein paar hundert Metern kommen wir an den Ruinen von Serondela und dem einsamen Grab von Pop Lamont vorbei. Bevor der Chobe National Park 1968 gegründet wurde, war Serondela eine kleine Siedlung mit einer Sägemühle.

Als der Nationalpark gegründet wurde, mussten alle Bewohner den Park verlassen und wurden (zwangs)umgesiedelt. „Pop" William Lamont, der ehemalige Vorarbeiter, ließ sich nicht umsiedeln und erstritt eine Sondergenehmigung. Er lebte hier, bis er 1974 starb und man beerdigte ihn hier auch.

Wir biegen wieder auf die River Bank Route und haben genauso wenig Glück was die Big Five betrifft. Auch unser Guide ist fährt zurück auf die Waldroute, um zum Sedudu Gate zurück zu fahren.

Wenige Minuten später erreichen wir wieder das Sedudu Gate des Chobe Nationalparks.

Voller Eindrücke und gerade noch rechtzeitig zum Frühstück erreichen wieder wir unsere Unterkunft, wo wir, so wie wir sind, gleich zum Frühstück gehen, bevor womöglich schon abgeräumt wird.

Wir stellen fest: die nächste Reise geht für uns in einen Safaripark in Deutschland, das ist näher dran und bedeutend günstiger und mehr Menschen gibt es da sicherlich auch nicht.

Es geht heute früh ins Bett, denn morgen geht es früh los, die Victoria Fälle in Simbabwe rufen ….

Upon your confirmation of safari booking, we shall pick you from your hotel to our offices when you arrive in Kenya for documentation purposes. We shall also pick you from your hotel of residence to the national park(s) and drop you once you complete your safari.

Package Itinerary

DAY 1: MOMBASA TSAVO EAST. Pick up from your Mombasa hotel or Airport in the morning drive along Mombasa — Nairobi highway to Tsavo East national park . Tsavo East national park is renowned for its large numbers of elephants and the famous man eating lions. After getting in park you embark on a game until midday where you arrive at your booked Lodge or camp for check-in and Lunch . Later In the afternoon you proceed for a game drive until around 6 pm when you retreat back for dinner and overnight.

DAY 2: TSAVO EAST TSAVO WEST.

Early morning game drive return for breakfast, after breakfast leave Tsavo East for Tsavo West, you will arrive with Game en-route proceeding to your lodge / camp. Check in and have lunch. In the afternoon have a game-drive and also visit the rhino sanctuary and later return to your lodge/camp . Dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: TSAVO WEST AMBOSELI

DAY 4: AMBOSELI NGUTUNI SANCTUARY

Early morning game-drive , come back for breakfast and depart to Ngutuni with game-drive enroute . Arrive ngutuni sanctuary for game-drive before checking in and lunch . Afternoon game-drive in ngutuni sanctuary with a possibility to see big cats and a variety of wild animals. Dinner and overnight.

DAY 5: NGUTUNI SANCTUARY MOMBASA.

Breakfast , gamedrive and drive along Mombasa — Nairobi highway back to the coastal town of Mombasa and drop off in your respective hotel.
