“Is this necessary?” Pete sighed, watching Kenya set herself to take a photo of him in front of a painting. It was new, going on a date to an art museum, because he’d never shared the artistic side of himself with anyone before. Honestly he’d thought she’d find it boring, just standing around looking at stuff, but she seemed to have found her entertainment in a little game of making him pose to emulate the artwork behind him. “Is this right? It feels like scoliosis,” he groaned, his back bent at a weird angle, then started to laugh when he realised how ridiculous they must have looked to everyone around them. @thekenyastratford

Jordan's birthday was coming up, which was always bittersweet for her since it was also her mother's death day. As a kid, she would spend her birthdays doing just enough celebrating that her father didn't have to see how much she didn't want to celebrate at all. After beating her cancer though, Jordan started to embrace birthdays much more and the more she stepped into adulthood, the more she started thinking about her mom and the person she really was, not just the patron saint of martyrdom she'd made in her head, afterall, her mom was still in her 20's when she had Jordan and before she knew it she will have truly outlived the woman. With all of that in mind, she ventured to one of the smaller bookstores in town in search of her mother's favorite book, 'Their eyes were watching God'. She was is no real rush so despite not exactly knowing where to look, she perused the aisles for the sake of it, the sections were a little confusing in the sense that all the places she assumed the book may be proved to be incorrect as there was no sign of the title. Since she'd come in, she'd passed a woman around her age who looked especially comfortable to the point where she made the assumption in her head somehow that she worked there, so she approached, "Excuse me, sorry to bother you, but do you know where I could find books by Zora Neale Hurston? Lord, I think I need to read more physical books because not finding it on my own has been nothing short of humbling."

Adut Akech was born in Sudan (in an area that later became part of South Sudan), but was raised in Kakuma, Kenya. Akech was born on Christmas Day, on the way to Kenya. She was 7 years old when she moved from Kenya along with her mother to Adelaide, Australia as South Sudanese refugees seeking asylum. They also had relatives there. Akech has five siblings.
Tumblr media
Akech was known as "Mary", her Christian second name in Adelaide, as Australian teachers found it difficult to pronounce her name.

Be proud of African names, and stop falling into the trap of saying all African names are hard to pronounce. Like European names are easy
