Behold: the Elvin flag
The meaning behind the colors:
Pink - Oralie special abilities.
Red - Darek and Fintan the blood of enemies that didn’t have to be spilled due to their negotiating skill
Orange - Kenric wealth
Yellow - Sunlight
Green - Alina and Terik the elves’ indefinite life span
Teal - Clarette the Vackers because that’s how famous they are
Blue - Emery, Fallon, and about half a Noland Blue eyes
Purple - Velia and the other half of Noland Purple is traditionally used to represent European royalty, so it would make sense for the Elves to use it too
Together, the colors also represent the entire visible spectrum of light, which enforces how important light is to the Elves

psychoanalysis:
you are sad and tired. your parents suck, and they may be too controlling. you are forced into a mold, anbd you try and try to become the person that they want you to be, but you fail every time. you want to escape your mortal coils, but you cannot. instead you focus on imaginary worlds that make you happy, and make you feel loved and safe. you are afraid of not being good enough, of being left behind because you cannot keep your head out of the clouds long enough to form an irl human connection.
remember that you are loved no matter what, and things will get better. your path in life will only get clearer as time marches on.

Kenric & Oralie
Roisin's Reading Rumble, Round 1
@camelspit @arson-anarchy-death
Councillor Kenric Fathdon and his secret lover, Councillor Oralie, were the butt of several jokes in the first few books due to their clear affections for each other that both clearly weren't fully trying to hide despite the law against Councillors falling in love. As the story continued, however, and Kenric was murdered by his former colleague Fintan, the reader gains further insight into both the origins of their affections for each other, and what kept them from walking away from the Council in the first place, making their separation all the more tragic.
ROUGH BEGINNINGS:
Kenric and Oralie's first interactions after the latter was elected to the Council were anything but sweet or loving. In fact, they hated each other, especially after Kenric delayed confirming Oralie's election to the Council: "I’ve always wondered why it took so many days for everyone to reach a consensus, since Emery had told me I was the only Empath up for consideration. But apparently it was you" (Stellarlune). One of Kenric's memories that is recovered from the cache takes place following Oralie's coronation as Councillor, and they spend most of it arguing; Oralie thanks him for "dropping the polite act" and refers to him as "my enemy." Kenric makes his own sarcastic comments in response. Though Kenric claims that his reluctance to confirm her as a Councillor was due to his concerns about the fragility of Empathy, their rivalry may have actually been a reaction to the connection they both felt—something Oralie confirms herself: "We definitely did [hate each other]. It took years for us to respect each other—and even longer before we figured out that most of our resentment was a defense mechanism to help us fight our deeper feelings" (Stellarlune). Psychologists refer to this phenomenon as a cognitive defense mechanism known as "reaction formation," where someone will "defend" themselves against an unwanted attitude towards a person by unconsciously treating in the opposite manner of their true feelings. Kenric and Oralie's mutual antipathy, therefore, would betray their true affections for each other. And indeed, they did harbor great affection for each other, to the point where everyone around them noticed.
DANCING AROUND EACH OTHER:
Oralie and Kenric's interactions, once their mutual hatred had faded, could best be described as "flirty" or "overly fond." Kenric often called her by a nickname, "Ora," which no one else in the series has called her, demonstrating a certain connection they shared that Oralie had with no other elf. In fact, she herself described it as "a very special connection" (Stellarlune). Kenric often reached for her hand or touched her cheek in a subtle display of his affection, and made thinly veiled comments about his affection for her: "I always say too much when I'm with you" (Unlocked 420). Some of his comments were far less veiled/subtle: "Kenric flashed a smug grin as he stepped closer—so close, the toes of their shoes touched. 'I seem to remember you losing your train of thought twice the other day when I wore that gray jerkin with the emeralds on the collar. The one you've always said brings out the flecks of green in my eyes.' He batted his lashes" (Unlocked 421). Oralie seemed very fond of the time they spent together, remarking, "He could be quite charming when he wanted to be" (Stellarlune). However, the love they shared couldn't—or wouldn't—ever be something they could bring to the public eye.
ILL-FATED CONFESSIONS:
Their mutual pining came to a head in a memory that was washed from Oralie's mind and stored in her cache as a Forgotten Secret. Upon reflecting that sometimes he wasn't proud to be a Councillor, Kenric confided in Oralie that he was considering resigning, and begged her to come with him: "I may not be an Empath, but I know I'm not alone in this. Don't tell me you've never wished...you don't have to keep fighting this" (Unlocked 424). Oralie halfheartedly urged him to not say it aloud, but it only spurred him on to say heatedly, "Because of love, Ora. We both know that's what this is, no matter how hard we pretend otherwise" (Unlocked 424). In this moment, he named their mutual connection, asked her to think of the life and they family they could have together, and Oralie seemed tempted—she leaned into his hand—but then told him she "can't do this." And rather than be hurt, or angry, Kenric only went on to prove how well he knew Oralie, by guessing her most devastating secret and the very thing that kept them apart: Oralie's secret involvement with the Black Swan and contribution to Project Moonlark. No matter how hurt he was by her refusal to be together, he still supported her by agreeing to hide her secret, hide their love for each other, and not turn her in for breaking her oath: "And..I understand. Or I'm trying to, anyway" (Unlocked 426). Beyond that, he told her that he'd stay on the Council with her, because her daughter would need allies. His love for her stretched so far that he automatically agreed to commit his life to a job he was unhappy with, if it meant protecting her child. Oralie, too, was clearly longing to agree to his plea and run away together: "He leaned toward her and her lips parted, like she might let him kiss her. But at the last second she turned her face away" (Unlocked 425). Though Kenric never stopped hoping that things will change, they continued to not-so-subtly remain in love but apart until Kenric's untimely death.
FOREVER APART:
Sophie caught on to Oralie and Kenric's mutual attraction from the very first day she came to the Lost Cities, between observation and reading Bronte's mind. She noticed Kenric "scooting his chair a touch closer to Oralie's than he really needed to" (Keeper 45), then caught Bronte thinking about how he'd caught them: "And you're tired of watching Kenric stare at Oralie.' Bronte's jaw fell open and Kenric's face turned as red as his hair. Oralie looked down at her plate, her cheeks flushing pink" (Keeper 48). Others, too, had much to say about Kenric and Oralie's closeness; Edaline commented that Jolie's party dress was, "probably the most talked about thing at the party—even more than how many times Councillor Kenric asked Councillor Oralie to dance" (Everblaze 108). They lived in neighboring castles; Kenric's surname was the password to Oralie's cache, and Kenric's required Oralie's eyelash to open. He was devoted enough that Sophie could instantly rule out the possibility of his survival by realizing, "Kenric would never let Oralie suffer" (Neverseen 469). Kenric also remained protective over Oralie—she reflected that "He always insisted on being involved in everything I did" (Unlocked 419), and that "He always kept me out of anything he'd decided was 'too intense'" (Unlocked 423). Clearly, Kenric did his best to keep Oralie safe, even if they couldn't be together. And he clearly thought often about what could have been, as he paid a visit to the matchmakers to confirm that he and Oralie would have been each other's first choice. Oralie commented on how Kenric was "usually far more cautious" about keeping their mutual adoration a secret—no matter how obvious comments like "You always make everything better" (Everblaze 186) might have seemed to those around them. But as tragically separated as they might have seemed, this was nothing compared to their final separation after Fintan's murder of Kenric.
ORALIE'S GRIEF:
Kenric's death shook Oralie to her very core, even months after his planting. The sight which confirmed to Sophie that Kenric was truly gone was the image of "the rest of the Councillors gathered around a sobbing Oralie" (Everblaze 203). Oralie was so devastated by her lover's loss that even the full strength of the Council could console her; this was made even clearer by Sophie's narration of the Council attending the funeral: "But the finery didn't make them look any less weary and miserable. Especially Oralie. Her eyes were nothing more than puffy red slits, and she leaned on her goblin bodyguards like they were the only things keeping her standing" (Everblaze 215). To be so crushed by someone's loss that she was rendered unable to stand up on her own, Kenric was clearly very, very important to Oralie. And the marks never faded, even with time; after Bronte referenced Kenric's death, Sophie commented, "Silence followed, and Sophie had to steal a glance at Oralie, feeling her heart twist when she watched Oralie's eyes turn glassy. Clearly all the months since Kenric's death hadn't lessened Oralie's grief over losing the person everyone had suspected she'd secretly been in love with—and who'd obviously been in love with her, too" (Legacy 145). Clearly, Oralie was significantly impacted by Kenric's death, and continued to be so for months and months. It affected everything from her clothing choices at the Peace Summit during Lodestar to her decision to hold Sophie back from hurting Gethen as he taunted her, because "Kenric would have wanted me to" (Lodestar 334). The residual impact of his death also left Oralie wondering if there was anything she could have done to prevent it. With Kenric's death fresh, Oralie risked her position on the Council to fulfill his last wish: that his cache be given to Sophie. During that tearful exchange, Oralie added, "'Though I should've done more to help.' Tears slipped down Oralie's cheeks. 'I should've done so many things'" (Neverseen 23). Though Oralie at first seemed to be only referring to how she hadn't been able to do anything to prevent Kenric's death despite fearing that it would happen, she also was likely referencing her choice not to resign with him. Before, she was clearly regretful but firmly unyielding in that decision, but now, with him gone, she perhaps wondered if it truly was worth it to sacrifice their life together. In another moment of reflection, this time about Oralie's inability to save Mr. Forkle's twin, he told her, "'One thing I've had to learn,' Mr. Forkle interrupted, 'and I suspect you know this better than most—is that it's far too easy to analyze a tragedy after the fact and feel like you should've been able to prevent it,'" and she responded, "'Yes,' Oralie whispered, 'It is.' Sophie had a feeling Oralie was thinking about the day Councillor Kenric was taken from them" (Nightfall 124). Even months after his death, Oralie carried the weight of his absence and the regrets she had every single day, demonstrating the true extend of his importance to her.
CONCLUSION:
Both Kenric and Oralie are primarily characterized by their devotion to each other. Though in recent books each has gained further depth, between Oralie's reveal as Sophie's mother and Kenric's erased memory of meeting with Prentice, they cannot even seem to be mentioned without referencing the other. From a reader's perspective, their dynamic is fascinating: they hated each other, then fell in love but were kept apart, then Oralie refused to walk away from the Council even if it meant being with Kenric, then Kenric remained devoted by her side despite her rejection, and then he died and it clearly came close to breaking Oralie. They shared a common love, but also a sense of duty that prevented them from acting on that love, and a clear loyalty for each other that never wavered. Kenric and Oralie are the ultimate doomed star-crossed lovers, kept apart not only by fate, but also by death itself.

KotLC one shot
*deep inhale* I’m back people! I actually wrote part of this fic as an assessment for my English class lol. I added a lot more flourishes (and I mean a lot, this used to be one sheet of A4) and actually ended it properly! I’ll put it on ao3 at some point but I do not have an account! Once my request goes thorough, i’ll put it on there :). It’s a mix of Sophie ANGST (we love our angsty girl tho!) and some sokeefe fluff :3 (he is soo protective of her, it’s adorable). It’s also Sophie’s POV (first person) fyi :) Anyway, enjoy!!
We were in flames. Again. I could almost hear fintans cruel laugh as he leaped away. The never seen Crystal he and Ruy used was still here somewhere but it would have to wait. I turned to the flames again. And that’s when they hit. Flashbacks of Oblivimyre, San Diego, Verdi and I in the Everblaze and pain. So, so much pain. Old burns reawakened and I screamed, unable to stop myself from returning to that place. Black obscured my vision and my panic flared higher. The tiny coherent part of my brain was thankful that I refused to let Dex come with us. The harsh memory of burns climbing my arms felt like new even though Mr Forkle had done so much to repair them. For all I knew, they could be real and I could have been engulfed by the roaring orange fire. Another scream fell from my lips and I thrashed, trying to rid myself of bonds that hadn’t touched me for months.
A soft, blue breeze streaked across my consciousness but it wasn’t enough. The shade of blue was almost exactly the same as Fintan’s trademark, balefire and it only racked by body with more panic, pain and fear. More blue breezes ran across my mind, this time tempered with green and building to a gale pulling me together. It wasn’t a destructive hurricane, but a mending one, pulling me together and finally clearing my vision from the blackness. My frantic screams eased as did my trashing although I still trembled fiercely, fighting to keep the monster inside at bay. I cursed myself for letting Flori stay at home before remembering that Grady and Edaline would be left unprotected should she have left.
Tears ran through my eyelashes, coming thick and fast as the monster replayed more terrifying scenes from my past. Eternalia falling, Oblivimyre again but this time when we found Kenric missing, Oralie, Forkle’s death and Keefe running away. That’s what hurt most.
‘He left you’ the voice in my head whispered ‘He left you and didn’t care that you nearly shattered. He only pretends to care to take advantage of you.’
More sobs shuddered through me and the teal breezes could only do so much. Everything was a blur, but why could I not feel rough, painful asphalt beneath me? Now I was a little more focussed, my head began to clear and I could hear something. A name. My name.
‘Foster. Foster. FOSTER. FOSTER. FOSTER PLEASE. PLEASE SOPHIE. Sophie snap out of it, please. SOPHIE! FOSTER! LADY FOS-BOSS! Foster come on, wake up!’
I could feel shaking hands now, holding me. One on my back, one clutching my ungloved hand. At last, my eyes cleared properly and I could see. Keefe leaned over me, worry and fear distorting his features as he cradled me. He somehow still managed to look amazing, even while terrified and panicked.
‘Keefe?’ I whispered hoarsely.
‘Sophie. Thank the stars. I thought-‘ his voice broke. ‘I thought I lost you again.’ He sounded so scared and almost heartbroken. ‘Never mind. I knew it was a mistake letting you come here with- with him. Come on, I’m taking you back to Havenfield.’ Keefe sounded angry now. Protective. He started to pull me properly into his arms, as if he knew I was too weak to support myself.
‘No. Keefe, stop. I’m not going back home yet. I have to help. There could be humans here, I have to save them. The never seen don’t get to kill people just because I can’t handle a bit of fire like a weak little girl.’ I protested weakly but the determination in my words was there.
Keefe’s jaw locked. ‘You are in no shape to go rushing around saving people. Now, I don’t know what just happened but I do know that it was their fault. I didn’t know whether you would snap out of it, Sophie! You were thrashing around with your eyes wide open and screaming. It was all I could do to keep you from falling and hurting yourself more. And don’t say that you’re fine. I’m an empath, remember. I can feel everything you’re feeling right now and there were a few minutes where I didn’t know whether the panic and guilt would consume you. Let me help you for once. I’m trying to keep you safe and NOT SHATTERED’ he shouted the last words and I could see the regret in his eyes as I flinched.
‘They don’t get to control me, Keefe. I can take care of my own sanity. I know my limits.’ I was stronger now, the breezes he was still sending me helped too. He was right though, I was still shaking badly and I likely needed medical attention based on the pain I could feel blossoming in my arm and head. Either way, pain or no pain, I was still conscious so I was still able to help in some way.
‘Foster, you can’t keep doing this to yourself. You’ve been working yourself to the ground these past few weeks and I can tell you haven’t been sleeping either.’ He was right, of course. The nightmares had been unbearable and anytime I tried to sleep they always woke me within the hour. My dark circles definitely were in a league of their own despite the makeup I had been applying to cover them and not worry anybody. Keefe could always tell.
‘And the way you just looked away from me confirms it. Sophie, please, you need to rest. You need Elwin. I’m guessing you’ve been avoiding him so that he wouldn’t notice how little you’ve been sleeping? I know it’s hard but please, you have to take care of yourself before you can save everyone else. And before you say anything, Marella is trying to contain the flames now and Fitz hailed Alden. He should be here any second with quicksnuff (?) and frissyn. The humans will be safe. You need Elwin’ he repeated. I hadn’t noticed before but fear was laced through his words. Keefe was scared. But for what? And then it clicked. He was scared of losing me. That made me feel even worse, I hated people worrying because of me.
I hid behind my hair, embarrassed.
‘No. I have to stay, make sure that we didn’t miss anything. I’m not letting innocent humans be in danger because of me. And I thought you would understand, Keefe, I can’t let them control me like this! I can’t be just a defenceless little moonlark who collapses every time she sees fire.’ I replied, aware of how insufferably stubborn I was being.
Keefe sighed mixed with an annoyed growl in the back of his throat. He did know, though. So he helped me back up to my feet and held me close, tenderly kissing my forehead. ‘I’m taking you straight to the healing centre after this, my stubborn Lady Fos-Boss.’
This time, I sighed ‘Fine, Lord Hunkyhair.’
Keefe cracked a smile at that. It was small, but enough. Strength suddenly coursed through me and my knees buckled slightly. Keefe curled his arm around my waist and looked around to see who was responsible.
‘Don’t worry, it’s just Fitz. He’s sending me a bit of energy.’ I said to calm him.
Keefe nodded.
I heard running footfalls behind me and I turned, throwing stars already in hand, half expecting to find another member of the never seen or a rouge ogre.
Fitz smirked as he slowed to stand by us.
‘Did I miss the Sokeefe snuggle fest?’ He teased.
It relaxed me to see him joke about me and Keefe.
‘Aww, do you feel left out Fitzy? Come here, I’ll give you a cuddle,’ Keefe replied, leaning towards him but not letting go of my hand.
Fitz laughed and took a step back ‘Noo way loverboy! Dad will be here in a minute, he’s trying to find a crystal where we are. Sophie, I’m guessing you have quicksnuf?’
I handed him the cube that I’d forced Dex to make me after our last disastrous training session. Thank goodness for Sandor’s quick thinking.
Fitz’s smile faded as he noticed something on my arm. ‘Uhh, what happened?’ He said, gesturing to my right arm.
‘What do you mea-‘ I glanced over at my arm and saw a bruise the size of my face covering my forearm. ‘Whoa. Keefe, I think I get why you were freaking out now.’
Fitz scrunched his brow ‘Why was Keefe freaking out? He never freaks out?’
Keefe raised his eyebrows and glanced quickly at me.
‘Oh. I’ll ask later.’ Fitz mumbled. ‘Anyway, Marella is trying her best but the fire won’t obey her and she doesn’t know why.’
I cursed. ‘Of COURSE he thought of everything. Ughh! Fitz, throw the cube, would you?’
He nodded and hurled the box right into the middle of the inferno.
Powder exploded everywhere and a disgruntled screech sounded from the flames.
All three of us winced as Marella shouted ‘YOU COULD HAVE WARNED ME IDIOTS!’
‘Sorry!’ I called back. It wasn’t all bad though, the raging flames were finally calming.
‘Thank god the quicksnuff worked’ I whispered, leaning against Keefe.
‘And now, we are going to Elwin.’ He said, gently pulling me closer and planting a kiss on my forehead.
‘Ughh fiiiiiine’ I groaned, but I didn’t move this time.

Aro Oralie! Let's pretend this isn't a couple days late lmao
ao3
As an Empath, Oralie has learned that love feels different for every person. It’s not a single emotion, not even a group of emotions similar enough to fall under the same category. There are infinite ways to love, infinite colors it can appear as.
And somehow, despite all the options, Oralie can’t quite bring herself to feel love in the same vibrant, adoring, romantic way that she can sense everyone around her feeling.
Sometimes the love she feels from other people is violet, deep and calm. Or blue; it can build up and fade away like the waves of the ocean, but it never truly leaves. On occasion, Oralie will come across someone whose love is tinted green, heavy with grief. It’s depressing to feel the loss that comes with their love, but it’s rare, and there are other colors of love that bring a smile to Oralie’s face. Some love in bright shades of yellow or orange, a sunrise and a sunset and the promise of wanting to live through each day by their side.
Kenric’s love is red, burning with passion, and she wishes she could return the feeling. Wishes she felt it too; a vast, unrestrained kind of longing hotter than the sun. She wishes she could want him, like he wants her, wants her enough to sacrifice anything for her.
Oralie wishes she could love that intensely.
But Oralie’s love isn’t intense or vast or passionate. It’s not quite like anyone else’s; not bright, not deep, not permanent, not even sorrowful with the kind of mourning that only comes from a strong love. Her love is dull, and grey, and it’s there but it’s not powerful or romantic or clearly defined like she wants it to be.
Oralie can feel all the colors of love from everyone else, she knows how it’s supposed to feel.
It just doesn’t feel that way for her.

Yes, Astartes, Sororitas and other Imperials do tend to sing during battles:
The enemy were flooding into the street, howling and chanting. ‘Animals,’ Kenric said softly. Calder glanced at him. ‘No. That is what makes this all the worse.’ He turned, checking the rest of the line.
Men and women in Ecclesiarchy red clutched their weapons with nervous intensity. Some were afraid, others eager. But he was satisfied that they would hold. Lorr prowled behind them, her voice raised in exultation. ‘Raise your voices to the heavens, so that the God-Emperor might hear you,’ she cried, lifting her crackling power maul. ‘Sing, Sisters! Sing, penitents – sing!’ She wheeled, her flat gaze sweeping across the ranks of soldiers and Sororitas. ‘Sing the song of our last days, sing so that we are not forgotten. Meet their daemon-hymns with our own holy song! Sing!’
And they sang.
Calder watched in silence as the troopers first raised their voices in song, and then their lasguns, setting them across the barricades. The Sororitas followed suit, their voices more practised. Battle-hymns were as much a part of their arsenal as the bolter. He raised his own weapon. ‘On my mark,’ he said through the vox.
‘Shall we sing as well, lieutenant?’ Kenric asked.
Calder glanced at him. ‘Sing if you wish, Kenric. So long as you can shoot at the same time.’
Targeting runes flickered to life as the first of the foe reached maximum optimal range. Calder felt a flicker of pity for the debased figures racing towards him through the dust. Misplaced faith had led them to their deaths as surely as if they’d put guns to their own heads. But they’d made their choice and now would suffer the consequences. The voices of the faithful met in the dusty air, and for a moment, Calder imagined the songs twisting in battle above his head. Then, the first las-bolts erupted from the bulwarks and several cultists fell, their howls cut short. But more pressed forward, trampling the bodies of the fallen in their eagerness to reach their foes.
Behind him, Kenric began to sing. One by one, the other Intercessors joined him, and the deep, basso rumbling of their voices stretched out.
Troopers shot nervous glances their way, and their singing faltered, but Lorr nodded in evident pleasure. ‘See,’ she shouted. ‘See – the angels of the Emperor add their voices to yours! You are blessed, you sons and daughters of Almace. Show them your thanks – sing!’ Once more, the song rose, bolstered by the throbbing pulse of Primaris voices. The enemy raced towards the barricades, and Calder’s targeting runes flashed green.

Their colors match Oralie and Kenric's! Dex is gem is an emerald I believe and Stina is pink tourmaline. While Kenric's gem is amber green was a color associated with him while pink was always Oralie's.
Both Stina and Dex have the same colors; pink and green associated to them respectfully. Stina and Oralie are both empaths and yeah, the personalities don't perfectly match up another Stina and Oralie parallel is in Legacy; after her councilor make over Stina was described as the following:
(Legacy, roughly page 190~)
Something that always seemed to be happening between Oralie and Kenric that changed their relationship and heck, even possibly the outcome was their memories of each other always being changed. Stina and Dex don't have that going for them because they've known each other for so long and have been going at each other like cats in a burlap sack.
They know everything about the other and yet nothing at all
(Neverseen, Chapter 63)
The two can clearly get along even a little bit as shown here near the end of Legacy
You can practically hear the two high five!
and yeah Stina has said some really shitty things but lets not forget Dex spiked her food/drink and turned her bald and all Stina did in response (after a lot of antagonizing from Dex in Slurps and Burps) was plant a stink frog in his locker which she didn't even pick! It was already open according to her.
I will go into Stina in another post soon but Stina did so much growth in Legacy. It was small but you could see fractions of what Stina must be like beyond the perspective of Sophie and the other's points of view because Sophie, love the girl, is very blind. Stellarlune was a burning trashcan for me personally because there's just so much "yeah i could never be friends with Stina Heks" AFTER THEY DOG PILE HER FOR HAVING AN OPINION OVER HALF OF THEM SHARED FIVE SECONDS AGO.
There are just so many tiny moments where Stina could be a genuine friend and, as a personal hc Copper Mares gets together way later when they're young adults/nearing that age. Its a lot of time to grow and change.
@frizzle-mcshizzle !!! I HAVE AN IDEA what if what if what if
what if Stina x Dex is like
a picture of past Juline x Kesler??
Cause, like let's be real, we don't know how old any of the adults are? If Juline and Kesler are older, then they could have mellowed out, yk?
But like what if when they were younger they acted the same????
Anyways, just a little head canon I came up with
#im so normal about them#kotlc#keeper of the lost cities#stina heks#dex dizznee#copper mares#stinex#the parallels#professional yapper
