In 1914, it was 15 years after the invasion of Mars and as Mars neared Earth again in its orbit the Earth had been preparing itself against a follow up attack. Dr Tesla believed he was detecting coded messages which could have been a prelude to a new invasion. ARES (Allied Resistance Earth Squadrons) which formed after the last invasion, had a new arsenal based on Martian technology which included “walkers” powered by steam and armed with missles,88 mm cannons, and heat rays, bi-planes armed with heat rays, and massive armored blimps ("War of the Worlds: Goliath", flm)

Southside Picnic Doused with DDT to Prevent Spread of Polio
July 30, 1946: Walter Hoagberg sprays DDT in the Southside Picnic area in an effort to curb the spread of polio. The annual Southside Picnic was one of the few mass gatherings still scheduled that late July. Earlier that day, the Minneapolis Park Board announced cancellation of all parks programs and Minneapolis city officials requested all parents impose a voluntary quarantine for children to be kept home for the duration of the polio outbreak. Even the State Fair would be cancelled that year. By late July, Minneapolis cases were up to 202 for the year with 14 deaths. The majority of cases involved children under the age of 15.
In early 1947, the newspaper cited 1946 health department records, which indicated 766 Minneapolis cases and 47 deaths for the year. An additional 1,071 non-residents were treated in Minneapolis hospitals that year. Minneapolis was known as one of the best polio treatment places in the country, thanks to the treatment being provided at the Sister Elizabeth Kenny Institute and the facilities at the Michael Dowling School. Statewide, there were nearly 3,000 polio cases and 226 deaths in 1946.

A person of interest, Brian Dowling, is in custody in connection with the stabbing of Brooklyn, New York, activist Ryan Carson, police sources told ABC News.
No charges have been filed as of yet.
Carson, 31, died after being stabbed in the chest multiple times during an apparently unprovoked attack early Monday morning in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, police said.
Carson and his girlfriend were coming home from a wedding at the time.
The suspect walked past the couple while they were seated on a bench at a bus stop, police said. As the two then walked toward the suspect, he started to damage scooters and said to Carson, "What are you looking at?" NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters during a press briefing Wednesday.
As Carson tried to de-escalate the situation, the suspect swung a knife at him, Kenny said. Carson backed up and tripped, falling to the ground. The suspect then stabbed him three times, with the knife piercing his heart, Kenny said.

Making the Irish American: History and Heritage of the Irish in the United States J.J.Lee Description Featuring 29 classic and original essays on the turbulent, vital, and fascinating story of the Irish in America. The contributors include Linda Dowling Almeida, Margaret Lynch-Brennan, Marion R. Casey, David Noel Doyle, Pete Hamill, Kevin Kenny, Rebecca S. Miller, Mick Moloney, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Peter Quinn, and Calvin Trillin. All it takes is one St. Patrick's Day in the United States to realize that the Irish did not dissolve into the melting pot, they took possession of it. Few other immigrant peoples have exerted such pervasive influence, have left so deep an impression, have made their values and concerns so central to the destiny of their new country. In Making the Irish American, J.J. Lee and Marion R. Casey offer a feast of twenty-nine perspectives on the turbulent, vital, endlessly fascinating story of the Irish in America. Combining original research with reprints of classic works, these essays and articles extend far beyond a survey to offer a truly rich understanding of the Irish immigrant impact on America, and America’s impact on the Irish immigrant. Here the reader will find a brisk, compact history of Ireland itself, and a wide-ranging critique of Irish American historiography, as well as explorations of the multiple complications of religion, reflected in the fluctuating, and sometimes tempestuous, relations between Catholic and Protestant Irish and Scotch-Irish. The authors explore the various channels through which the Irish, men and women, have made their mark, from politics to labor organization, from domestic service to popular and traditional music, from sport to step dancing. Classic reprints include Daniel Patrick Moynihan's study of the Irish in New York, Pete Hamill’s memoir of President Kennedy—recollecting the responses around him in Belfast at the time of the assassination—Calvin Trillin's New Yorker profile of Judge James J. Comerford, long the iron-handed boss of New York's St. Patrick's Day parade.. #purchasebook amazon https://amzn.to/38ICDFq #irish #irishamericanhistory #irishamerican #heritage #historylovers #read https://www.instagram.com/p/CMdJZhFMTY7/?igshid=15hb56de0u3ih

It's a little-known fact but the sight of a wobbling aspidistra plant can bring on quite powerful flashbacks for anyone who grew up in the first flushes of the early 80s home computer era, and it's all thanks to a kids TV show called The Adventure Game. A selection of episodes of this almost-forgotten oddity were recently added to the Britbox streaming service, while there's also a DVD boxset containing all the surviving episodes. If you have any interest in how gaming evolved it's a fascinating case study.
The Adventure Game was created in 1979 by veteran BBC children's producer Patrick Dowling, who had previously delivered such era-defining shows as the summer holiday staple Why Don't You...? and brought genteel artist Tony Hart to our screens in Vision On and later Take Hart. The idea came from his interest in Colossal Cave Adventure, the genre-defining computer game written by Will Crowther in 1977 for hulking mainframes, and the rising popularity of Dungeons & Dragons in the UK. Dowling was also inspired by the hit radio adaptation of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and wanted Douglas Adams to write for his show, but production on the TV adaptation of his book made it impossible.
The Adventure Game is best described as an early precursor to The Crystal Maze, an inspiration for subsequent shows like the cult classic Knightmare (https://ift.tt/3aXbkr2) and a pioneering example of the now popular "escape room" concept. In each episode a trio of affordable BBC celebrities were transported, via the magic of chromakey, to the planet Arg where they are tested by the playful but gently sadistic inhabitants, the Argonds. These reptilian beasts occasionally appeared in their natural form, the sort of low budget monster outfit that kept Doctor Who afloat, but were mostly represented in human guise. One character, a cranky Argon uncle, preferred to only appear as that uniquely threatening aspidistra, shaking his leaves furiously at contestants thanks to R2-D2 actor Kenny Baker hiding in its pedestal and rolling it around on a child's tricycle.
