Me personally, involving the Drake n Kendrick beef?

I'm a full Kendrick fan, West Coast Mfs-but, I can see what Drake was *going* for.

His problem was he was treating this like he was just battling a rapper with less numbers than him. On Paper? this is true, and Drake's strategy for the beef makes sense.

-Respond to Like that with push-ups, a decent hit, clearing out all of his opponents at once except for Kendrick (And, little did he know, Rick Ross n Future)

-troll a bit and goad Kendrick into responding faster so he could slam him (I don't think he went abt this right, and I will elaborate on that in a second)

-after he gets a chance to let his responses out? Killshot. Bring in the heavy hits, the allegations, make it clear you won the beef, and dip, make it clear the smaller artist simply isn't worth more time and effort.

It's overall not a bad strategy....on paper.

But this is Kendrick Lamar.

As Any Avid Kendrick Fan will tell you, Kendrick is a Masterful Lyricist, a pretty deep dude in general, and, above all, a man who is persistent in using his music to push a message no matter what. Beyond the Moral high ground this seems to place him on at times, that simply means he isn't gonna give up. Drake should have expected more bombs after Family matters-in fact, he should have expected a lot. So, I'm gonna be going over how I personally would have done the beef with Kendrick, because at a certain point it was inevitable.

Pushups:

To be perfectly honest, I think Pushups was a great song. It was a decent response to Like that, as well as snapping back at the other people aimed at Drake, like Rick Ross, Future, Metro Boomin, the Weeknd, and I believe Ja Morant, even aiming a light stray at J Cole for dipping. At this point in the beef, it was still up to either side, so I make no changes here.

Taylor Made Freestyle

Definitely what I consider the first Lyrical Fuck Up of the beef. Considering the Allegations on Drake not being a real rapper, being a culture Vulture, and having ghost writers, I genuinely cannot see how he thought using AI voices was a good idea in the slightest, not only of the legendary Snoop Dogg, but of the Late Great Tupac Shakur. In the eyes of almost anyone west Coast, it highlights the fact that you don't give a single solitary FUCK about the culture, much less are a part of it. What I do here, is simply adjust the angle. I still think that dropping Taylor Made is important, but I abandon the AI idea in it's entirety. Instead, I focus much more heavily on the Taylor swift and K dot thing, calling him pussy in as many ways as possible without using AI. Maybe a couple bars along the lines of:

Sniper from the mountain aiming low so I can Pop a Vet Aimed at the king but you missed, now I'm Cocking Back Can't believe some white chick is the reason you ain't Dropping yet She probably make you get her more money for her Private Jet

Reasonable lyrics for a beef like it was at the time I think. Contains a couple double entendres, sounds decent, hits pretty hard, and has the same general intent: Make Kendrick mad, and give him more that he has to respond to.

Family Matters

Family matters is probably drake's best song in the beef, and it makes sense. he had intended for it to be the KILLSHOT, and I am willing to wager that he had at least some parts of it ready as soon as he dropped Pushups, just waiting to see Kendrick's response so he could add something responding to his own song and make it a complete slam. If I'm Drake here, I focus more on the wife beater allegation, just by a little bit. To be clear, how Drake (or his ghost writers?) did it was very good, with a hard hitting quotable line

"When you put your hands on your girl, is it self defense cuz she bigger than you?"

Even my family, all west coast ride or dies, thought Drake got Kendrick when Family matters dropped. It was great, the timing of it, the intensity of it, the fact it dropped same day as 6:16 in LA, it was just awesome.

Then....the real bomb dropped.

Dealing with Meet the Grahams

It was at this point in the beef that Drake was CLEARLY cooked. that was a fucking horror scene. The worst part is that Drake couldn't use the same route: Kendrick aired out his own dirty laundry on Mr Morale. It would be stupid to try and use that angle anyway, Kendrick predicted it all the way back in Euphoria. So, the KILLSHOT didn't work. Here, if I'm Drake, I'm panicked, because a response is needed, but if it's lackluster, that's it. First, deny the allegations of pedophilia IMMEDEATELY (I'm pretending that in this universe I am a Drake, who did not commit anything listed here). The daughter I can reveal as a fake later, let them talk, let hype build up. but the Pedo shit? can't fly, can't let me turn into P Diddy. once that's in place, I spend maybe 2 days working on a final kill shot

The Heart Part 6

My problem with this one is that it felt like he was trying to go out on his own terms when the people clearly did not want that. his biggest fans needed to see him Whoop Kendrick back, not say it's summer vibes time. now, the fake daughter drop? genius if it's true, however, the IMMEDEATE denial of it earlier makes the move have less oomph, so I don't do that myself. also, FOR GODS SAKE DONT BRING UP MR MORALE IDIOT, HE LITERALLY TOLD EVERYONE YOU WOULD DO THAT IN LIKE THE FIRST PART OF EUPHORIA

Anyway. What I do is the daughter drop, and deny, questioning the Validity of the rest of Kendrick's claims. Maybe, just maybe, make a hint to Michael Jackson having been Alleged of the same stuff? they never did prove he did it you know, and they straight up patted him down, took him to court, everything. It'd be a decent comparison, because a decent amount of people are still conflicted on whether he did it, even with all evidence pointing to say he did not. After that? idk, but I would personally make a song on BBL drizzy to make fun of Metro Groomin.

that's exactly what I would do.

Make a song on BBL drizzy, dissing Kendrick for affiliating with Metro, of whom just as much if not more proof of grooming tendencies is out as Drake, thanks to those damn tweets (Metro was born in 1993, no matter how you spin it, the earliest of the tweets he was 18, 2011, and the tweet "She may be young but she ready" happens in 2014, when he's 21 years old. concerning to say the least)

my unique perspective on the drake/kendrick war:

(disclaimer rap is not my fave genre so I don't know much abt it at all + my fave band is "stupid music for white kids who can't dance" so I'm not qualified to speak to it anyway BUT)

in grade school I had a longstanding hyperfixation with the Beatles, that I made everyone's business. in retrospect, this was bad. However, it resulted in a joke war against my two guy best friends who respectively thought that BTS and Drake were better than the Beatles. BTS guy gave up eventually by drake man kept pushing, for YEARS. we we in university and this guy did not waver. the argument waned but it remains a jokey point of contention. however as soon as I opened xitter dot com and discovered the beef which is decidedly being won by one kendrick Lamar, I told this friend and he renounced at least 5 years of dumb shit so moral of the story is if you can't win your battles wait a bit and someone more qualified will do it better

Drake vs Kendrick Lamar: Prelims

We are watching premier rap at the height of its history. Rap is lived longer, matured, broke groundbreaking financial records and reached global status. The top rap titans are sparring and this is the beginning...

FPS

Two levels of hindsight reaction:

1.) That yes, there is a big 3 and Drake, Kenrdick and J. Cole are those guys. More specifically (however ironically given what unraveled further in the timeline) validating and solidifying J. Cole's position in that arena. J. Cole's verse was the second of what felt like an unstoppable force and a rap career that, similar to a slow cooked [insert meat reference (no Diddy)], was finally ready to be displayed as deserving of the mount rushmore placement of the year. From The Off-Season to his recently legendary feature run, J. Cole was embarking on a clinic in development in the notion that sometimes it takes time to come into your own and that it is okay to blossom late. As long as you keep the hunger, commit to the work and do the reps.

2.) Is that the only person that seemingly felt a need to respond to FPS was Kendrick Lamar. No one, or at least very few, at the time considered FPS as a Kendrick diss. Kenrdick was really only mentioned by J. Cole and the entirety of the song really relied on common general rap sentiments; i.e. We the best, i'm the best, no one is better than me/us, etc. At best you could say that it is certainly odd that Kendrick isn't on this song by the contents of the song (we are later finding out that potentially there was a request in which Kendrick declined)

Like That

The bomb that started it all. It brought to the forefront multiple reactions, elicited multiple responses and ultimately provided clarity on where Kendrick, by way of Future & Metro Boomin, stand... We Don't Trust You. We, as in Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick (later The Weeknd, ASAP Rocky, Rick Ross and more) and You meaning Drake.  In true fashion just like the infamous Control verse, the aftermath of the song was catastrophic. It ultimately re-ignited the entire genre of rap. J. Cole responded, apologized and categorically removed himself from the Big 3 conversation. The Weeknd and ASAP Rocky came out in opposition to Drake. Drake leaked a response, fine tuned the leak and subsequently released a baiting / taunting follow up. Rick Ross responded to Drake's leak with some of his best bars in a while (almost evoking the spirit B.I.G.). Kanye Kanye'd. Without a doubt, Kendrick Lamar won the preliminaries. His singular effort in collaboration with Future & Metro Boomin ignited the entire rap industry... maybe even the music industry.

Aside: Somewhere in between all of this, Big Sean released a single, Precision, a Freestyle addressing the Big 3 and a book. All of which was overlooked.

Warning Shots

Push Ups / Taylor Made Freestyle

Push Ups was a solid Drake response to the Like That verse. As Dranos (A play on Thanos from the avengers), Drake flexed what we've all known for years, his rapping prowess and ability to, no Diddy, take on many. He single handedly addressed, Future, Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, ASAP Rocky, Rick Ross and of course Kendrick Lamar. With an aggressive beat reminiscent of Back to Back and a hunger in the bars, Drake, who we have all suspected as losing his edge and that his pen may be showing signs of rusting, shows us his pen is still in great shape after all of these years. Many have expressed the term battle tested and Drake makes full demonstration that he is in fact battle tested.

Euphoria

After all of the calamity and chaos, the dust seemingly settled, Kendrick emerges from the shadows of his self-imposed silence since the Like That verse in what one can only describe as an immaculate warning shot. He signals to Drake, and Drake alone, that he's ready and willing to take this in any direction that Drake wants to go; but be careful what you wish for. Many have critiqued Kendrick's response for having too many recycled notions from other artists but I believe that's the brilliance of his response. Ghostwriting, Pusha T, Rick Ross, DMX, AI, Tupac; Kendrick responds to Drake with Drake's Ghosts. The term layered has been increasingly used, it is apt. Drake in his Taylor Made Freestyle taunted Kendrick by saying "y'all boys quiet for the weekend, like Dot, I know you're in that NY apartment, you strugglin' right now, I know it In the notepad doing lyrical gymnastics, my boy You better have a motherfuckin' quintuple entendre on that shit Some shit I don't even understand, like

That shit better be crazy, we waitin' on you" If that was the sentiment and what Drake truly wanted... Kendrick delivered tenfold. One can only imagine that in the time he was crafting his response that he delighted in every aspect of what was happening on the surface. All of this from that. 

Thus concludes the end of the introduction of what is gearing up to be a musically historical Rap Beef. What we never got from Nas/Jay-Z, what we were deprived of from Tupac/Biggie, what we didn't get from Pusha T/Drake. Rap is rich in its history of rap beef. Competition is what fuels the genre and arguably is what placed the genre in world recognition. Drake & Future in 2015 were correct; What A Time To Be Alive. Round 1 is yet to come.

Not Like Us - Kendrick Lamar

DAMN.! Kendrick earns his third #1 single in NZ with his Drake diss-track 'Not Like Us'. I should have seen this one coming considering the music video was released last week and almost instantly racked up millions of views. Drake's gotta be in shambles right now.

This really puts the final nail in the coffin, huh? The crowd shouting out the "A Minor" line, Whitney and the kids dancing together in their living room, Kendrick's knowing grin. Absolutely brutal stuff.

No need to recap the beef I don't think cos there's plenty of other places that have done it (it even has a Wikipedia page!), but it's something I'm thrilled I got to see happening in real time. The back and forth tracks and the way Kendrick just systematically and methodically buried Drake was insane.

To give Drake some credit, his tracks weren't terrible. I actually quite like 'Family Matters' (and the line "Kendrick just opened his mouth, someone go hand him a Grammy right now" is pretty funny, even if it mostly just reveals Drake's jealousy). His big mistake though was going up against an artist like Kendrick who's known for his wordplay - dude, won a Pulitzer Prize for god's sake! That's who you wanna have a rap battle with?! Big mistake!

It'll be very interesting to see if Drake can ever recover from this, in terms of reestablishing his chart dominance. He has a previous five #1 songs on the charts, and a total of thirty-three songs that charted in the top ten, but when a song calling you a 'certified pedophile' reaches the top of the charts, how can you just back to releasing music as if nothing happened?

As for Kendrick, this victory lap just cemented his status as one of (if not the) best rappers in the game. I get the impression he's never cared as much about the charts and #1's as Drake does, preferring instead to create songs that are more 'meaningful', but with 'Not Like Us' he proves that he can do anything. Can't wait to see what he does next.
