I wish there were more characters like Cupcake from the Kelvin movies in Star Trek where they have no name but interact with the cast often enough that the Fandom adopts them as an actual character. Number One used to be like that and you can kind of see it with Transporter Cheif Kyle in SNW but I've notice NuTrek can't help but bring those characters to prominence and give them names and backstories which ruins those characters. Cupcake has no backstory other than a bar fight with James Kirk in 2009 but I'm always so excited when I see him just doing his job because "oh my god look it's Cupcake!" Like make The Bartender on the ship a character who never gives their names but knows all the Woes of the ship because characters stop by enough to vent frustrations in front of them. Don't just have them in the background bartending but giving genuine reactions to overhearing someone say "Yeah I think I'm being huanted by that bog squirrel from Gamma Omega IX."

Bengiyo's Queer Cinema Syllabus
Had a busy couple weeks, but here I am, returning to @bengiyo’s queer cinema syllabus. I am currently working my way through Unit 4: Heartbreak Alley, the totally light-hearted, definitely not agonizing section of the syllabus where I get to watch countless acts of violence be committed against queer people. Thank fuck I have Lesbians waiting for me at the end of this unit. The films in Unit 4 are: Bent (1997), Strange Fruit (2004), Boys Don’t Cry (1999), Brokeback Mountain (2005), Parting Glances (1986), Philadelphia (1993), The Living End (1992), Holding the Man (2015), Jeffery (1995), and Boys on the Side (1995).
Today I will be writing about
Strange Fruit (2004) dir. Kyle Schickner
[Run Time: 88 min, Available: had to purchase a DVD, Language: English]
Content Warning: lynching, racism, homophobia, rape, violence/gore
Summary: A New York attorney must return home to Louisiana to investigate the death of a childhood friend who, like Boyals himself, was both black and gay.
Cast:
Kyle Faulcon as William Boyals
Berlinda Tolbert as Emma Ayers
__
Well.
First of all, I guess, a thank you to @bengiyo is in order for discovering that Strange Fruit was available on DVD so that I was actually able to watch it. This has joined the likes of Mysterious Skin on my ‘definitely something I needed to watch, but can probably never watch again” list.
I want to warn anyone that is considering finding this film and watching it that it starts with a lynching. I…. I’m not sure I have the words. Not to get too real on main, but I have some pretty major trauma related to hangings, and I am just desperately glad that I did not watch this last week, as that was the anniversary and I am not confident I would have been able to finish this film. As it is I have been sitting in complete and utter silence since finishing the movie because a) holy shit b) the rope burns on his neck c) holy shit.
How do you watch a film like this knowing that lynchings still happen all the time? How do you watch a film where a gay Black man in a small, rural country town is brutally beaten, raped with a branch, and hung from a tree on screen while knowing that just last week a Black man was found hanging from a tree in a small, rural country town? For a movie that was filmed on a budget of only $250,000 (according to Wikipedia, the director was offered 6 million if he didn’t make the lead character both Black and gay and he turned it down) it is absolutely packed with very important, nuanced social commentary around queerness, around race, around homophobia in general and homophobia within the Black community specifically, around how the police uphold power, around the relationship between intellectualism and the South, and around how the queer community survives.
(sorry for the abysmal photo quality, there are no photos of this film and I watched it on my TV so I was not able to take screen shots)
For as cheaply as it was made it packs a motherfucking punch let me tell you, watching Kelvin scream for help, call for his mother, was just gut wrenching. Watching William desperately plead with the Black men who were lynching him not to do so because they were perpetuating the cycle of violence done by white men to black men not that long ago. How some Black men were fine with that because Kelvin, because William were faggots. How others killed themselves when the dust settled, understanding the realities of what they had done. The speech at the grocery story between Mrs. Ayers and Mrs. Boyals about how desperately Mrs. Ayers had wanted to disown Kelvin for being gay and how grateful she was that she hadn’t because she lost Kelvin too young.
The way small town loyalties and small town fears intersect, Matthew being so grateful that William protected him all the way back in fifth grade that he went against the orders of the other cops to tell William everything he knew, and how he was so afraid to be considered a homosexual if he stood up for a queer man. The way Sheriff Jensey was a racist, homophobic piece of flaming dog shit who still was doing everything he could to prevent people from knowing his nephew was gay. How he was reduced to ground meat for it. (Though, he can die, I have no remorse for him whatsoever). The way Mrs. Ayers calls out the fact that William can pass as straight but Kelvin couldn’t. The way that the queer community was silent in the wake of Kelvin’s death because that was the only way to guarantee the survival of community pillars. The fact that there was no new coverage of Kelvin’s death that we could see, but when the white man was lynched, there were news trucks all over the place because someone in power was affected.
And perhaps my favorite example, Duane, who refuses to step foot in a gay bar for fear of looking gay when he first starts investigating his brother’s murder with William who is ready to throw hands at Sheriff Jensey’s nephew when he makes a homophobic comment, putting his parole at risk, who ends the film driving around in William’s rental car which has the word Faggot spray painted on the back. The way he was angry at William for the stupid, elitist shit he was saying, about how everyone in Louisiana had an IQ below 80, how he refused to call this place his home anymore. Duance handled those moments so beautifully. There are so many important scenes in this film, I don’t think I can count this one as my favorite, but I do need to acknowledge how happy I was that Strange Fruit let a Black man cry on screen. Like, so much of Kelvin’s murder, and William’s attempted murder was incredibly upsetting, but I felt very deep in my soul the pain, the grief, the nausea that Duane must have been feeling looking at the memorial to his brother at his murder site.
I know because (again to get too real) for every day for months after my hanging related trauma I had to walk past a memorial for the person who passed, and let me tell you that shit was fucking brutal.
There is so much more that could be said about this movie, but genuinely, I cannot find the words. The production team knew what they were doing when they didn’t put a backing track on the end credits, opting for a silence that was interrupted by only the chirping of crickets. Because that is what this movie is, that is what this movie does. I am not exaggerating when I say that the only thing I could do for thirty minutes after the screen went to black, was just sit on my couch, frozen, and feel the weight of the silence around me.
Favorite Moment
I talked about this a bit above but my favorite moment in Strange Fruit is when Mrs. Ayers and Mrs. Boyals run in to each other in the supermarket and Mrs. Ayers gives a very passive aggressively polite talking to to Mrs. Boyals about her homophobia, trying to get her to go back on her decision to disown William after finding out he was gay. I do think it is vitally important that we get a scene where a mother of a queer son, who just lost her child because of it, is able to admit that she struggled with his sexuality, that she desperately wanted to be rid of Kelvin, that she desperately wanted to forget he even existed. The way she was spared from having a major regret in her life because she ultimately did not do that. She lost Kelvin when he was too young, she understands at a cellular level the precious nature of time, and how easily it can be squandered and she is trying to spare Mrs. Boyals from that pain. I appreciate it strikes enough of a chord with Mrs. Boyals that she attempts to visit William at the hospital, even if ultimately she is not able to make it through the doorway to his room.
Favorite Quote
“See that’s the thing about the bayou, no matter how much you try to push it back ‘ventually it’s gonna claim what belong to it. This is where you from man. This is where home is. Don’t matter how many degrees you got, you country.”
As a Southerner who did flee North, Duane’s words are still ring true. Even when my home state wants to dispose of people like me, even when states I have called home express their hatred of people like me, there is still a part of me that feels the emptiness of being away from home. I miss the mangroves, I miss the mountains, I miss the food, I miss the people I love who love me. It feels impossible to have the type of community I had back home up where I am now, and I am trying as hard as I can to cultivate it. I just love this line so much because I think it is important to remember where you came from, especially because William just before this was insulting the intelligence of people in the South, his people, from his home. I’m really glad he apologized for that.
Score
8.5/10
If this was a grade based on just emotional manipulation, the film would get a 10 cause...fuck. But structurally I think it's probably like a 7 or an 8 so I am gonna give it an 8.5.

Gemstones Episode 1.4: Keefe looks for love in a sports bar, and Kelvin meets a girl
Episode 1.4 is pivotal to the Kelvin-Keefe relationship, establishing that they both are gay, and that they have similar life goals: treated as babies in their subcultures, they long to prove themselves men.
Title: "Wicked Lips," from Proverbs 17.4: "An evildoer listens to wicked lips, and a liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue." I wonder who will be listening to wicked lips.
The Satanists: Keefe is walking through downtown Charleston, eating an ice cream cone -- a childlike activity, maybe signifying that he has been "born again," started life anew. He had to give up his old Satanist friends and lovers to follow Christ, and now he's looking for new friends -- and a boyfriend (he does not yet think of Kelvin as a potential partner).
He looks longingly at a hot guy through the window of a sports bar (it's Kyle Walsh, who has been Adam Devine's assistant in 10 of his movies and tv shows). Then the hot guy turns around, stares at Keefe, and licks through a v-symbol: a vulgar offer of oral sex, usually aimed at a woman, but apparently aimed at Keefe). Offenderd, Keefe moves on.
Next Keefe runs into his old Satanist buds, especially Daedalus and Cryptocore (who wears a gas mask and doesn't speak). They heard the he was hanging out with "those Gemstone weirdos," but he denies it. Then he refuses their invitation to a party at Club Sinister Friday night.
"Keefe's a fucking nerd now!" Daedalus exclaims. The slurs he uses, "nerd" and "weirdo," suggest the taunts of a high school bully rather than critiques of Christian believers.
As Keefe leaves, the Satanists demonstrate their new dance number. They look like they are having fun; he is tempted to join them.
Fancy Nancy: "Gay, you know..." Wait, is Amber talking about Kelvin?
No, it's Sunday dinner at Jason's Steakhouse with major donors Dale and Gay Nancy, owners of Fancy Nancy's Chicken. They are parodies of Dan and Rhonda Cathy of the notoriously homophobic Chick-Fil-A, but let's take a closer look at those those names: Dale's wife is named "Gay," and " "Nancy," and "fancy" are long-standing homophobic slurs. The whole scene is a play on homophobic slurs, calling attention to the problems that Kelvin and Keefe will have if they come out
The Nancys' problem: their teenage daughter Dot is on the wrong path, hanging out with an older, decadent boyfriend -- so they won't let her use the family helicopter anymore. Everybody volunteers to intervene, but Eli notes that Kelvin is the Youth Minister, so he should do it. He is thrilled: a way to earn his Daddy's respect!
Script problem: Shouldn't it be Kelvin's job by default? Why is there even a question? This seems to be a holdover from an earlier draft, when Dot was older.
Gay slur: Angry at being passed over for the job, Jesse criticizes Kelvin's glasses: "You look like Jeffrey Dahmer." The gay serial killer. Kelvin takes the glasses off.
What happened in Atlanta: We cut to Chad's wife Mandy telling the ladies that she broke into his email and found a message he received from Jesse last March: "Atlanta was dirty, dirty, for sure-y!" Other emails describe "titties," suggest getting tested, and ask how much he owes for the prostitutes.
Amber insists that it's none of their business. There are any number of innocent explanations. Later, she confronts Jesse, who gets mad at Mandy "for lying."
Timeline note: This episode takes place shortly before Easter 2022, which fell on April 17th. Mandy probably means March 2021, or she would have said "last month." So about a year has passed since Jesse's sex-and-drugs party.
The Semen Load: At the Nancy Estate, Kelvin announces that he and Keefe will be performing a Satanic Sweep (Keefe demonstrates by sweeping at his crotch. Satanic sweeps are about sex.)
Keefe connection: Jade Pettyjohn (Dot) starred with Tony Cavalero in School of Rock.
In Dot's room, they destroy: posters of the dark metal groups Bauhaus and Ministry; an ashtray; a "fidget spinner" (toy) that almost hypnotizes Keefe; two Ken dolls (used for gay play?); and a used condom. They bring everything out to their SCU (Spiritual Collections Unit) trailer. Lots of questions here: did they get a whole Satanic Sweep system started in just the few weeks since Keefe was saved (converted)? Wouldn't a real Satanist know that those so-called Satanic influences are bogus? And why are the Satanic Sweeps never mentioned again?
Keefe apologizes for displaying the used condom; Kelvin advises him that if it contains a semen-load, "don't even touch it." This queasiness about touching semen appears again in Season 2 with Judy and Jesse. Here Kelvin seems to be trying to steer Keefe away from his gay "lifestyle," which involved touching a lot of semen-loads. To emphasize his heterosexual manliness, he tries to draw Keefe into a play-fight.
Suddenly Dot's boyfriend Austin (Blair Jackson) appears. "I bet you money that was his semen-load," Keefe says. As they are drawn instinctively to thoughts of his penis, Kelvin decides to "Snip him right out of this situation." Castration joke, har har.
The 40 Year Old Virgin: Concerned that the Satanic Sweep had a sexual intent, Austin warns Kelvin "you go through my girl's panty drawer again, I'll whomp your ass." He then calls Kelvin a "40-year old virgin!" "So what?" Kelvin responds. "I made a celibacy promise."
Left and below: bonus Blair bod
If Kelvin is not lying to save face, he has a definitional problem. Protestants do not have celibacy (no sex ever); they have chastity (no sex before marriage). Evangelicals are encouraged to "be fruitful and multiply" by marrying and raising children. Ministers especially need wives. When I was in the Nazarene Church, no unmarried man could be ordained. Growing up, Kelvin would have been strongly discouraged from taking a vow of celibacy.
But if he thinks that gay sex is sinful, Kelvin might take a vow of celibacy to both explain his lack of interest in women and try to avoid sex with men.
Don't fuck it up: After a scene where Jesse criticizes Chad for not deleting the various emails about his sexual infidelities, we cut to the garden, where Kelvin is telling his Dad Eli that Dot is "very sexual -- a lost cause." Notice how he conflates sex and sin.
But the Nancys are major donors, and Eli won't let him quit. Besides, he's always saying that he's great with kids, "the Teen Whisperer." This statement suggests that Dot was never considered a potential girlfriend for a heterosexual Kelvin. She is always described as "a kid."
Eli continues: "You're the baby of the family. I've been babying you too long. This is your chance to prove yourself. Do not fuck this up."
I thought this review was a little light, so I added photos of Blair Jackson and a random hunk to RG Beefcake and Boyfriends

Comics read this past week:
Marvel Comics:
The Incredible Hulk (1968) #233-237 and The Defenders (1972) #69-73 and the Hulk stories in Hulk Comic (1979) #1-6 and #9-13
Within the main The Incredible Hulk book, I went from December 1978 to April 1979. All of those issues were written by Roger Stern and penciled by Sal Buscema. Issue #233 was inked by Chic Stone, issues #234 and #237 by Jack Abel, and issues #235-236 by Mike Esposito.
I enjoyed the story of these issues on their own, but they were a disappointment as the follow-up to the events of The Incredible Hulk #228-229 in which the best chance the Hulk’s ever had to live a peaceful life was ruined by the villain Moonstone goading the Hulk into attacking her and then playing innocent, which led to Doc Samson giving up on rehabilitating the Hulk, when he’d previously been making progress as his therapist. Issue #230 had been by a guest creative team and issues #231-232 were a crossover with Captain America (1968), so I had thought that it made some amount of sense for those stories to feel sort of discontinued from all that, but it seems to me now that they’re just not committing to having lasting consequences for any of that, which is disappointing because that storyline had been so impactful as a reader. The end of issue #229 was Doc Samson dramatically declaring that now he’ll likely help hunt the Hulk and then in these issues he’s inexplicably working towards helping the Hulk as he was before and also learns that Moonstone was a villain in an aside in a scene largely focused on something else.
The Defenders #69 was co-plotted by Jim Shooter and Jo Duffy and then scripted by Jo Duffy. Issues #70-73 were written by Ed Hannigan. Herb Trimpe penciled issues #69-70 and #72-73 and for issue #71 he just did the breakdowns and Jack Abel finished the art. Al Milgrom inked issue #69, Mike Esposito inked #70 and #73, Jack Abel inked #71, and Fred Kida inked #72.
It had been some time since I’d read any Defenders and I really enjoyed getting back into this book. I’m invested in the overall team and the relationships between the various members, the Hulk characterization within these issues was great, and I also really liked Herb Trimpe’s art here. I’m really hoping that this is the end of the Lunatick’s time in the book, his role as a villain has been going on forever and he’s not interesting enough to justify that. I’m specifically hoping for more stories about Valkyrie at college that don’t feature that guy and actually depict her taking classes. I am expecting the conclusion of Kyle being investigated for tax evasion to be coming up soon, but I’m not sure what’s going on with Patsy. And I’m not sure yet if Dr. Strange has returned to the team or if that was only a temporary thing for the specific plot of these issues. Clea Strange has expressed an interest in joining the team.
And Hulk Comic was a black-and-white weekly anthology British magazine that began publication in March 1979. Some of the content in it is original and some of it is reprints of previously published comics but extensively edited to condense them to 3 pages. I’m skipping the edited reprints and am just reading the original Hulk content. As supplementary material to the main Hulk comics, I actually like these stories better than I did The Rampaging Hulk (1977) and do The Hulk! (1978).
The original Hulk story in issue #1 of Hulk Comic was written by Steve Moore, the ones in #2-3 and #5-6 and #9-13 by Steve Parkhouse, and the one in #4 by Kelvin Gosnell. The original Hulk story in issue #1 was penciled by Dave Gibbons, the one in issue #2 by Steve Dillion, the one in issue #3 by John Bolton, and the ones in #4-6 and #9-13 by Paul Neary.
Fawcett Comics:
the Golden Arrow stories in Whiz Comics (1940) #43 and #52 and #56 and #58 and #69 and #83
The Golden Arrow stories in Whiz Comics #56 and #58 were written by Otto Binder, the writers for the rest of the stories are unknown, and all of these stories were drawn by Harry Parkhurst. This was my first time reading any Golden Arrow, who was a long-standing character in Whiz Comics that actually appeared for the first time in the same issue that Captain Marvel did, Whiz Comics #2. Golden Arrow was a western character that fought with golden arrows and rode a white stallion named White Wind. Some of these stories here looked a lot like what I’ve read of Harry Parkhurst’s Hopalong Cassidy stories, another western Fawcett character, and a few of them actually looked a lot like his work in Champion Comics and Champ Comics which was a welcome surprise.
I selected these issues to read, and the Hopalong Cassidy stories I read last week, by checking what Harry Parkhurst had been credited with on the DC wiki website. But I checked the Grand Comics Database this week and saw that he actually drew a lot more Golden Arrow and Hopalong Cassidy stories than the DC wiki had listed. But I’ve decided that this was a good enough dive into his work for now and I’m ending my Harry Parkhurst journey after I read through the Golden Arrow stories he drew in Golden Arrow (1942) #4 just cause that was on my list to read this past week but I didn’t get to it. I do intend to read through the rest of his Fawcett work at some point, but it’s not a priority for me. I really enjoyed reading a variety of comics drawn by the same artist and seeing the variations in his style and I liked how this process got me reading genres I hadn’t ever checked out before, so I intend to repeat the process I took with Harry Parkhurst with other Golden Age artists whose styles look interesting to me.
Harvey Comics:
the Jungle Man stories in Champion Comics (1939) #2-9 and Champ Comics (1940) #11-12
I don’t know who wrote any of these stories. I could believe that Harry Parkhurst drew all of them, but the story in Champion Comics #2 has the name Don Traver within the art in a panel on the last page. The reason why I’d question that is that I’ve seen a few stories that are clearly not drawn or written by the same person that have the credit “by Don Traver” on the first page, including the Jungle Man story in Champion Comics #5 which looks just like the Neptina stories, which makes me think that this was a pseudonym used by multiple people. The story in Champion Comics #6 actually has Harry Parkhurst’s signature on it. There isn’t much of anything on Don Traver online, other that he also apparently also drew some Koroo the Black Lion stories for Bilbara Publishing, so I’ve added those to my ever-growing comics to-read list.
These stories started out following the adventure of Jungle Man, a ‘white savage’, in a Cambodian jungle. Then he agreed to move to America with his love Louise and her father Professor Carson, a plan that was immediately derailed. The rest of the stories had Jungle Man and co trying to survive on the jungle island they were shipwrecked on. This was my first time reading jungle-based comics and I thought it was interesting, though there were obviously some uncomfortable elements.
Note that there was actually a Jungle Man story, presumably also drawn by Harry Parkhurst, in Champion Comics #10 but I wasn’t able to read it because that issue hasn’t been scanned and uploaded online yet. And there were Jungle Man stories in Champ Comics #14-17 but I didn’t read them because Harry Parkhurst didn’t draw them.
And note that these issues were actually published by Worth Publishing Company and then Champ Publishing Company, because Harvey Comics didn’t take over the series until issue #18. I’ve listed these issues under Harvey Comics just because that’s the section on the Digital Comic Book Museum website they’re available under.
Eternity Comics:
the Betty Blake stories in Spicy Tales (1988) #3 and #5
These two 2-page stories, which were reprinted from the November 1934 issue and the July 1935 issue of Super-Detective Stories respectively, are all that’s available to me of Harry Parkhurst’s work from the 1930s. I had been completely unaware that there were any comics printed in men’s pulp magazines in the 30s before reading these. I saw a site that compared Betty Blake to another similar character from this era, Sally the Sleuth, and determined that in Betty’s stories “the almost-obligatory bondage and rape scenarios that Sally regularly endured (particularly in her earliest adventures) were absent” and that the character existed in “a seemingly more stylish and less raucous- if no less treacherous- world than the one Sally inhabited.” I enjoyed these two stories and would like to read all of her appearances if only they were available. There doesn’t seem to be as much of an effort online to scan old pulp magazines as there is for old comics, and the material the pulps were printed on probably doesn’t help.
The Betty Blake stories were actually both written and drawn by Harry Parkhurst. Both of these stories were recognizable to me as his artwork and didn’t seem any less skillfully drawn than the stories I read drawn by him from the 40s, despite the decade gap between them. Though the first story was drawn in a less-detailed style that looks more like his Jungle Man work and some of the westerns that he drew, and the second is more detailed and more reminiscent of his Neptina, Queen of the Deep, stories. The bulk of his western work, particularly what I’ve read of his Hopalong Cassidy stories, seems to me to be at a middle point between those two styles, but I think find the two solidly different approaches more appealing than the middle ground.
Eastern Color Printing Company:
the Connie pages in Famous Funnies (1934) #1-19
Famous Funnies, which reprinted popular syndicated newspaper strips, was “the first regularly published comic book in the standard format” and I decided to start reading the Connie reprints in it after seeing a page of the strip in Ron Goulart’s Great History of Comic Books and really admiring the art. Funnily enough, that page depicts the character time traveling, but everything I’ve read so far shows her in detective stories reminiscent of the Nancy Drew books that I read when I was younger. I’m not sure when it evolves into a science fiction strip, but I think the process will be interesting to read, though I did find these stories really enjoyable. Connie was both written and drawn by Frank Godwin and issue #1 of Famous Funnies had 4 Connie pages, issues #2-16 had 2 Connie pages, and issues #17-19 had 1 Connie page.
