Free! the Final Stroke - Budapest pilgrimage part 1
After being in love with Free! for 10 years now and visiting Iwami 3x already (soon it will be the 4th time) - you cannot imagine how surreal it felt when I heard about the Budapest part when the movie was released last year. Thanks to @fencer-x who confirmed many details and directed me to Japanese Twitter users (39_Free and Ladyoscar_1990) who actually found the exact location of the HaruRin train crossing and the little shop where Rin met Ai - I could visit the places quite quickly, living in Budapest myself. This particular post focuses on Makoto’s parts - Keleti Railway Station (I pass it 2x a day on my way to work and back), the Fisherman’s Bastion in the Castle district, the No 41 tram (they don’t use the same type of vehicle on that line anymore, so I went to Deák square to take photos of the type shown in the movie), the lower quay on the Buda side, the Chain bridge from the Pest side (it’s still under renovation and probably the red bench where Makoto and Haru sits and talks won’t be there after the reveal...) and last but not least the Parliament (photo take from the Castle district). Anyone who needs exact locations and addresses, just send me a DM!
I was super lucky with the weather - could take almost the exact same shots as were shown in the movie.

Notes for Part III of Life Unfolds in Chapters
- As you sure know, Shadow and Bone was shot in Hungary, with many scenes, including the Novokribirsk ones, shot in Budapest. So I decided that nothing, absolutely nothing is keeping me from basing my Novokribirsk on the turn of the century Budapest
- Many of the places mentioned in the chapter were built in 1896, which is a little later than how I usually date the series, but since it’s fantasy and fanfic, I guess we’re alright. Anyway, the reason for why so many things were built at this date is that as far as the historical canon is concerned, Hungarians--originally a loose grouping of nomadic tribes--came to the Carpathian Basin in 896 (there is a theory that they were here before, then went away, then came back, but let’s not go there now), so in 1896 there was a huge milennial celebration, coupled with an exhibition much like the World Fair.
896 is, however, not the “birthday” of the country/date of founding of the country. That is dated to 1000, when King Stephen I got baptized and in turn got a crown from the pope (a move, which, of course, was necessary in the contemporary political climate, but it still pretty much eradicated the previous, politheist religion, which makes my little pagan heart cry, but I digress). This is celebrated on 20 August, which is coincidentally Ben’s birthday.
- Alina and Sasha arrive at Keleti (Eastern) Railway Station, which was built in 1884. Fun fact: this is the station where Nat arrives at when she comes to Budapest in Black Widow. Here’s a picture of how is looked in 1900ish.
Tumblr media
- I named the mayor Kogart, which is (unlike all the OC names in the chapter) is not a Russian name. Kogart is actually a museum in Budapest, ran by the Kovács Gábor Művészeti Alapítvány (Foundation for the Arts). Its building, which was built in the late 1800′s, and was used as a residence for rich people/nobles until WWII, doubles for the mayor’s mansion.
Tumblr media
- The “replica of the Grand Palace” is based on Vajdahunyad Castle, a replica of a 15th century castle found in Transylvania (back then, the region was a part of Hungary), which once belonged to the Hunyadi family--Hungary’s maybe most beloved king, Matthias, came from that family. It was, too, built for the millenium celebrations, first mostly out of wood, then, due to its popularity, it was remade a couple of years later to be made a more permanent structure. Today, it houses the Museum of Agriculture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Yes, it is situated in a huge park with a lake serving as a skating rink during winter, and a thermal spa in the far back.
- The square mentioned in the chapter is based on Heroes’ Square. On the top of the column in the middle stands a statue of Archangel Gabriel, while the seven chiefstains of the original seven Hungarian tribes circle the foot of the column, depicted on horseback. There are two colonnades behind it, one with the statues of great kings, the other with statues of other great historical figures, but not necessarily kings. And (somewhat) beyond the square lies the city zoo, and beyond it the national circus.
Tumblr media
- There really is an underground railway running under the avenue where the Kogart house is situated (called Andrássy Avenue today). It was, too, built for the milennial celebration and started running in 1896, as the first underground railway in continental Europe. I heard once--but I could not find reliable sources on it--that it was built underground and not aboveground, because the avenue is full of mansions of the rich, who did not want the poorer people look at their houses as they rode the train (it is, however, mentioned in several sources that an aboveground train would have ruined the aesthetics if the avenue). It was built not by digging a tunnel, but by basically digging a hole, which was later covered--because of that, it runs right under the surface. It’s still running today, called metroline 1, “sárga metró” (yellow underground) or “kisföldalatti” (little underground).
- The Parliament building--must be one of the most iconic buildings of Hungary. The construction of the building lasted from 1885 till 1904, but parliamentary sessions were held in it from 1896.

- They saw Carlo Goldoni’s The Fan in the theater
- The horse Aleksander is talking about is Kincsem (1874-1887), who still has the most victories of any unbeaten racehorse today. Her name, by the way, means “My Treasure.”
