Okay uhhh I wanna talk about the ironic nature of the alt right for a second bc of the rally in London and the presence of the uh, L'manburg flag. If you don't know what I'm talking about, here's the photo:
Tumblr media
The L'manburg flag is strewn amongst other far less savoury alt right flags like a trump 2024 flag.
So I was joking about the presence of the L'manburg flag with my dad, and he pointed out that the alt right deals almost Exclusively in ironic speech. Which is Unfortunately true.
The online alt right lives and breathes meme culture and irony. The first time I saw "kek" used to just, genuinely mean laughter in a twitch chat I was Super confused because I remembered that kek had been taken by the alt right as a kind of ironic dogwhistle. Same with pepe the frog which sounds dumb but that's kinda the point.
The trick of the alt right in the past had been to steep Actual Ideas From The Right into meme culture and jokes. So for example:
"haha let's unalive all the minorities! jkjk... Unless"
Like pose your actual statement so that people who agree with it won't feel uncomfortable and people who do feel uncomfortable think it's a joke. Keep doing that until the latter party isn't uncomfortable anymore. And it works.
And this is important to know because... Well the L'manburg flag might Not have been 100% a mistake.
It might have been a cosplayer with innocent but Deeply misguided intentions which in my head, is the best option.
It might have been what people are posing, a mistake from when they looked up "freedom flag" which is still not great but kinda funny at least (though it's possible repercussions are less so).
Or it was someone bringing the flag "ironically". Like haha look at this silly Minecraft flag. How funny and novel that I bring a Minecraft flag to such an important- I mean also silly rally. We are just joking here, we do not actually despise minorities! Which in my opinion is the Worst option.
Like, if people see this and start joking and ironically saying "ohoho I'm from the fictional country of L'manburg and I hate the [insert slur]s. How funny since I don't actually" then that might get repeated enough for it to seem normal.
That might seem a lil weird since the mcyt community claims to be "so supportive and we'd never have an alt right part of the fanbase" but uh... Well two notes on that actually.
One, this community lives and breathes twitch which is steeped in gamer culture, and Most Alt Right Memes come from gamer culture. Once again, pepe example.
And Two, spend five minutes in quackitys chat, look me in the eyes and tell me this fandom isn't capable of horrific racism.
So bottom line is this I guess, don't be so dismissive. This might not just be "nothing" or "just a funny incident". Be Careful because dogwhistle have come about and swept up people for Less.
You can't just be dismissive of this kind of stuff imo, so be aware and maybe read up on the nature of dogwhistles if you have the time.
