Remembering Keith Jefferson and Dick Butkus
Here is my combined remembrance of two entertainers we lost today:
Remembering Keith Jefferson 1970-2023
Actor Keith Jefferson has died at 53. He was a friend and frequent collaborator of Jamie Foxx, notably Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained as Pudgy Ralph. That lead to some more performances in QT films: Charly in The Hateful Eight and Land Pirate Keith in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Quentin Tarantino and Keith Jefferson
They were all small supporting roles, but he was quite good and memorable in each of them.
The link above is the obit from Hollywood Reporter.
Remembering Dick Butkus 1942-2023
Football player-turned-actor Dick Butkus has died at 80. He appeared in a number of football-themed movies including Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday. Other notable supporting roles included Johnny Dangerously, Hamburger: The Motion Picture (a ridiculous raunchy 80s comedy that had some laughs), as himself in Gremlins 2: The New Batch, and and as the cafe owner in the first 2 seasons of My Two Dads (1987-1990 NBC).

Buddy Guy: A Man & the Blues (1968)
Almost 88-years-old as of this writing, Buddy Guy is a national treasure, the living personification of Chicago blues, and one of the last surviving links to Chess Records' golden age, when he helped write the book on electric, urban blues.
But in 1968, Buddy was moving on from his longtime record label to Vanguard and delivering his first album, A Man & the Blues, but don't worry: he didn't leave the blues behind, as the self-penned title track rhetorically asked:
"What's a man to do when the blues follows him around?"
Well, Buddy was gonna tell us, with a little help from simpatico producer (and legendary jazz and blues historian) Samuel Charters and fellow Chess alums like guitarist Wayne Bennett, drummer Fred Belows and, most notably, pianist Otis Spann.
Together, they apply a coat of cool sophistication to Buddy's fiery, at times histrionic, Chess persona, by nudging slow-boiling ballads like the aforementioned title cut and "Worry, Worry" closer to B.B. King, whose "Sweet Little Angel" Guy also covers here.
All three remind me of nights in the late '90s spent at classy Chicago jazz joints like the Green Mill (often confused for Al Capone's favorite speakeasy, complete with a secret trap door behind the bar), trying to train my Brazilian brain in the city's rich blues history.
But, before you ask, yes, Buddy and band also pick up the tempo for horn-enhanced renditions of "Money (That's What I Want)," "Mary Had a Little Lamb" (later replicated almost verbatim by Stevie Ray Vaughan), and "I Can't Quit the Blues."
All of these swing like a soul music revue and prove that Buddy's versatile vocals, to say nothing of his disciplined guitar licks and fleet-fingered solo runs, could have earned him a living at Stax, just as they did at Chess.
Oh, and on "Just Playing My Axe," Buddy collects some overdue "Inspiration Tax" from The Rolling Stones by re-appropriating the iconic "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" riff for his own needs -- I'm sure Keef didn't mind.
Blues fans and critics certainly didn't and embraced A Man & the Blues as a new beginning for Buddy Guy, who spent the next few years performing more frequently to appreciative rock fans, both at large festivals and famous venues of the era.
Unfortunately, though Buddy already had a follow-up album -- the curiously named Hold the Plane! -- in the can by the end of 1969, for some strange reason lost to time, Vanguard didn't deliver it to the marketplace until 1972.
So much for establishing career momentum ... I guess the blues really were following Buddy around.
More Blues: Big Bill Broonzy, Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Son House, Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James, Etta James, Skip James, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lonnie Johnson & Victoria Spivey, Robert Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Albert King, B.B. King, Mance Lipscomb, Muddy Waters, Charley Patton, Bessie Smith, Taj Mahal, Peetie Wheatstraw.

EP Review: Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway - Into the Wild
The so-called “(Down the Rabbit Hole Version)” of “Stranger Things” finds Molly Tuttle, backed with banjo, cello and synths, taking a refreshing, anti-bluegrass approach to the song first recorded for City of Gold.
This Sarah Jaroszian take features on - and is a highlight of - Tuttle & Golden Highway’s Into the Wild, the six-song EP that serves as a sequel to the aforementioned 2023 LP.
The title track is an effective, fully-bluegrass environmental plea co-written by Tuttle and Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor. The other Tuttle-Secor original, “Getaway Girl,” is rom-com in song and doesn’t quite work.
AJ Lee and Tuttle’s father, Jack Tuttle, join in for a moving rendition of Kate Wolf’s “Here in California,” and Into the Wild rounds out with previously released covers of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit,” which tries a little too hard to be psychedelic, but works despite itself, and Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 u,” which is good only for those who like rapid-fire, pseudo-rapped lyrics and beats with their Americana.

American Fiction Review (MiamiGEMS2023- A Crowd Pleaser Like No Other This Year
Tyler Perry has his little world in Atlanta where he acts, writes, directs, and produces his films and television shows. He has a unique style that sets him apart from many others. As he is a Black man his projects focus on the Black experience. American Fiction is as Tyler Perry as I’ve ever seen but not nearly as bad as most of his projects. This film by Cord Jefferson is one of the best films…

West African long-beaked common dolphin Delphinus "delphis"
Observed by dougiewainwright, CC BY-NC
Several forms of common dolphins have evolved a long-beaked morphology independently of each other in coastal regions around the world. Recent genetic analysis confirms coastal long-beaked common dolphins off West Africa are distinct not only from the well-studied long-beaked common dolphins of the Eastern Pacific, but from the short-beaked common dolphins also found in the Atlantic, from which they may have diverged something like 250,000 years ago. The taxonomy of common dolphins is still unsettled, but as the quotation marks around the specific epithet above should suggest, my feeling is that continued study will bear out recognition of numerous species around the world.

@steddielovemonth Day 28: Love is… When you look at his lips for half the conversation because you can’t stop thinking about kissing him (Prompt by @starryeyedjanai)
wc: 733 | Rated: T for suggestive language | cw: None
Tags: Eddie Munson Has a Crush on Steve Harrington, Family Video, Pining, Pre-Relationship, Jeff (not present but mentioned a lot), Cliffhanger Ending (might write a cheeky sequel tomorrow)
'Lips'
Eddie should have known it was a mistake to visit Family Video on his lunch break. His excuse to Jeff was that the store had better air conditioning than the mechanic shop. Aka, an air conditioner.
Besides, he promised his friend that he wouldn’t be all that long.
Unlike yesterday.
… Or the day before.
And that no, Jefferson, best friend dearest compatriot, it has nothing to do with Steve Harrington’s summer attire – a good ol’-fashioned too-tight polo and a pair of jean shorts that have not been rotating around in his pea-brain for the better part of a month and a half now that they are in the throws of an Indiana summer.
Nope. None of that.
Nor does his desperation to skip down three blocks and waste his entire lunch break have anything to do with the chapstick Steve has taken to wearing (though Robin’s recent snickering suggests the reddish-pink pouty blessing is a Harrington Summer Standard).
But Eddie just can’t stop staring as his completely kissable crush bemoans working a double shift.
... Or something.
He isn’t really sure because Steve just bit his lip in annoyance – Keith! He definitely just mentioned that loser! – and, well, now there’s an indent on his bottom lip that is making Eddie think about how red they could get if they were all kiss-bitten and...
Eddie forces himself to look up from the plush pout Steve has permanently plastered to his face when he is bitching.
He is met with a faint crinkle in Steve’s brow and yeah, it is probably quite obvious he is not paying attention. His eye wanders above Steve’s frown to the beads of sweat pearling at his hairline.
He gulps.
No, no, no!
This can’t be happening! Steve cannot start sweating too.
It’s bad enough that Eddie has seen him all hot and bothered, his delicious chest hair all matted and grimy as they ran for their lives in an undead hellscape. And their late afternoon sojourns to the Quarry are downright cruel as Steve strips off his sweat-stained shirt to reveal equally sweaty hair that trails down, down, all the way down beyond his waistband to what is surely a sizeable –
“– Eddie!”
He grips the counter between them with grease-stained fingers and holds on for dear life.
“Huh?” he grunts, his eyes landing back on those lips like it’s now the worst possible habit he could ever have the misfortune of developing.
Because Steve is, well, Steve Harrington. Ladies Man. Casanova. Dorky wooer and hot former-jock turned actual good dude.
Stevie H. who’s all plush and pouty and... Moisturised.
Those lips look soft, don’t they?
And maybe the reddish hue is a sign of a flavour? Perhaps cherry? Maybe even strawberry?
Eddie licks his own bone-dry lips as he thinks about tasting it.
Tasting Steve...
How those beautiful smackers would look all swollen from spending time wrapped around his –
“Are you even listening?” Steve whines, lightly smacking the counter with his gigantic, manly hand.
“Yeah – oh… um, yeah sure, man,” he splutters.
Steve’s sceptical frown faulters, softening as he looks Eddie over. He purses those lips.
Fuck.
It’s painfully obvious, isn’t it?
Eddie closes his eyes and sucks in a breath.
Jeff was right. Today, a mere ten minutes ago... Yesterday... The day before...
He should just let go of the counter, turn heel and run back to work to sweat his balls off. At least there he wouldn't be confronted with he tantalising mouth of one Steve Harrington and all the filthy thoughts that come with staring at them.
His wristwatch beeps in agreement – a warning alarm Jeff set by yanking at his arm before he stepped out of the shop on his merry way.
“Hey,” he begins, clearing his throat as he dares open his eyes again.
And he finds Steve staring back, a small smirk tugging at the corner of his sinful mouth. He licks his lips and those hazel, now greedy-looking eyes flit down and linger there.
As if they are examining...
“I gotta go!” Eddie screeches.
His shout sends Steve shooting upright from where he had drifted into leaning across the counter.
Eddie launches himself backwards, stumbling towards the door as he incoherently splutters about Jeff and gaskets and the miserable PB&J sandwich he has waiting for him in his beat-up lunch tin.
“Eddie, wait!”

Every single Brawl Stars character as songs
So, I was unhappy with my prior posts on this topic, both because of the song choices I made and because I didn't properly credit the musicians behind them. Ergo, I'm going to compile all of the brawlers into a single list below the cut, and then update and reblog this post each time a new brawler is released.
Feedback regarding song choices is encouraged if you think you have a better fit for a character.

Dylan / Young / Keith / Danko / Helm / Hudson / Drummond - SNACK Benefit, Kezar Stadium, San Francisco, March 23, 1975
Fifty years ago this past weekend, Bill Graham threw a big, daylong party at SF's Kezar Stadium as a benefit for SNACK (Students Need Athletic And Cultural Kicks). The Grateful Dead, Santana, Jefferson Starship, Tower of Power, the Doobie Brothers, Joan Baez and more all played. And hey, listed at the bottom of the bill was none other than Neil Young. For his first gig of 1975, Neil brought along a never-to-be-repeated gang of Canadian and American all-stars — Bob Dylan, Ben Keith, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson and Tim Drummond.
On paper, it should be one of the greatest bootlegs of all time. But it's always been a little disappointing, all things considered. The K-101 broadcast has a pretty wonky mix; there are some wildly unrehearsed moments; Dylan's mic doesn't seem to turned on for most of the otherwise historic debut of "I Want You." All is not lost, however! Thanks to scottythered's high-tech intervention, the tape has been improved quite a bit. Thank you for your service, Scotty! It's not perfect, but it's something! "I Want You" is still a bit unsalvageable, and those harmonies on "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever" aren't going to tune themselves ... but overall, the far more balanced mix makes for a far more enjoyable listen.
And it's definitely an enjoyable performance, no matter how ragged, from the stoner country lope of Neil's "Looking For A Love" to the rowdy sing-a-long of "The Weight." And then there's the legendary closing medley of "Helpless" and "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" ... or "Knockin' On The Dragon's Door," as it were.
A little tidbit from Jimmy McDonough's Shakey about SNACK: "Roadie Johnny Talbot recalls a moment in rehearsal when [Dylan and Young] started to jam was literally electrifying — they went to switch guitars and in the heat of the moment, each forgot to let go of the one they were holding, which resulted in a huge shock. 'On their butts, BAM! Before I could get out there, they picked their guitars up off the floor and did it again. They were so in awe of each other they weren't thinkin'.'"
This was a busy weekend for Bob — just a day later he'd climb aboard the Queen Mary down in Long Beach to celebrate (?) Wings' Venus and Mars, joining Cher, Dean Martin, George Harrison and many more celebs. Professor Longhair performed, too — resulting in the Live On The Queen Mary LP, which was produced by Bob's old producer pal Tom Wilson. Make of that what you will, nerds!
