I think the reason your labru fics managed to keep me hooked when i normally don't like a lot of fan content about them is that it's reciprocal. Laios and Kabru both look out for each other and take care of each other, when normally a lot of content for them is focused on Kabru being there foe Laios without much focus on the reverse. I love, love, love Nourish especially, with Laios not really understanding what Kabru's talking about but trying to engage and pay attention anyway, making him a tasty meal so he'll sit down and let himself unwind, and just showing how he cares about people

Thank you so much! You can assume whenever I'm writing from Laios' POV at any given moment I'm beating back the urge to spoil Kabru rotten. I want to give him a wardrobe of full of nice clothes. I want to make him dinner. I want to find him falling asleep at his desk and carry him back to bed. If there are 0 Kabru simps, I'm dead. The threat of complete and utter derailment looms large with every fic I write and I must tread carefully 😤

It doesn't surprise me that a lot of labru stuff focuses more on how Kabru supports Laios than the other way around, since that's how it largely manifests in the series. Laios, being the main character, has a lot of plates he's spinning in the air, but Kabru is uniquely focused on Laios and how Laios relates to his own goals. I'd be curious to count up the panels that has Kabru referring to Laios, both verbally or mentally, and compare it to other characters outside the main party, because I think the results would be quite funny haha

But while there is a disparity, the scenes where Laios reciprocates this support, in my opinion, are arc-defining. Laios, with zero prompting, realizes Kabru would be hungry after his resurrection and makes him something to eat with his own party's supplies. It's Kabru's aversion to monster cuisine that factors into his emotional bid to Marcille, in that you can't make a perfect menu that looks the same for everyone. And, crucially, Laios promises to share a meal with Kabru that doesn't include monsters. For the entire series, Kabru wanted to know whether Laios could be interested in people as much as he was interested in monsters, if he could prioritize people over monsters, and this is where he gets his answer. This is what convinces him to put his trust in Laios enough to help him escape from the Canaries and to let him try and talk down Marcille. Because Laios demonstrated he was capable of taking people's i.e. Kabru's wants and needs into consideration, even if it had nothing to do with monsters.

Labru appeals to me because of everything they have to offer each other, yes, but mostly because of everything Laios has to offer Kabru. Here you have this character who is routinely seen to have a suppressed appetite, who makes himself smaller in order to be more appealing to the people around him, who makes space for and services everybody but himself, and here you have this other character walk right up to him and say, "You look hungry. Let me make you something to eat."

Scraper Bots, Fuck Off! How to "Opt Out" of Your Artistic "Data" Being Used in "Research"

How can artists protect their work from being used by art-generating "AI" bots? How can we take a stand against this continuing, as more and more programmers build their own forks and train derivative models?

Here are a few steps artists can take to keep their work from being used to train new art generators (and one step non-artists can do to help). For the reasoning and explanation behind these steps, click the Read More.

The Method:

Remove images that do not have watermarks. Take down every one of your images that can be accessed publicly and does not have a watermark. (In fact, if you have the resources, take down every image, even those with watermarks, and reupload them with new names or URLs).

Add watermarks to your images and re-upload them. Put a watermark on every image you intend to share publicly. It doesn't have to be huge and obvious, but for best results, it should have text, and if you really want to be a pain in some engineer's neck, it should be colorful. Watermark everything. From now on, any image you share publicly should have a watermark.

One host domain only. Strive for keeping your image files on only one domain—for example, tumblr.com, or your personal domain. Again, I explain below the cut.

ADVANCED: Configure your domain's robots.txt. If you have administrative access to your host domain, update your robots.txt file to contain the following: User-agent: CCBot Disallow: /

ADVANCED: Configure your meta-tags. If you have administrative access to your web pages, update your meta-tags to include the following: <meta name="robots" content="nofollow">

ADVANCED: Configure your .htaccess. If you have administrative access to your host domain, update your .htaccess file to prevent hotlinking to images. There are a few ways to achieve this, and a simple tutorial can be found here (https://www.pair.com/support/kb/block-hotlinking-with-htaccess/).

Bullying Campaigning. If you do not have administrative access to your host domain (for example, if you host on tumblr, or deviantart), ask your administrator to block CCBot in the domain's robot.txt, disable hotlinking, or take similar actions to prevent image scraping.

Aggressively pursue takedowns on image sharing sites. The best known sources of this issue are Pinterest and WeHeartIt, but especially focus on Pinterest. The image takedown form for Pinterest can be found here (https://www.pinterest.com/about/copyright/dmca-pin/), and the image takedown form for WeHeartIt can be found here (https://weheartit.com/contact/copyright).

Non-artists: do not reupload images, do not share reuploaded images (no, not even to add the source in comments), do not truck with re-uploaders. If you see an image without a watermark on image share sites like Pinterest, and it doesn't look like the artist themselves pinned it, give them a heads up so they can file a takedown.

The Reasoning:

Why watermarks? Why meta-tags? What good will any of this do?

Below the cut, I explain how these art-generation bots are "trained," and how we can use that information to prevent new bots from training on stolen art.

Those Who Can't, Program

Deep learning models capable of generating images from natural language prompts are growing in both capability and popularity. In plain English: there are bots out there that can generate art based on written (and sometimes visual) prompts. DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney are examples of art-generating "AI" already in use.

These models are trained using large-scale datasets—and I mean, large. Billions of entries large. Because teaching a learning machine requires a lot of examples.

Engineers don't make this data on their own: they acquire datasets from other organizations. Right now, there is no better dataset out there than the Internet, so that's what most engineers use to train their models.

Common Crawl (https://commoncrawl.org) is where most of them go to grab this data in a form that can be presented to a learning model. Common Crawl has been crawling the publicly-accessible web once a month since 2011, and provides archives of this data for free to anyone who requests it. Crucially, these are "text" archives—they do not contain images, but do contain urls of images and descriptions of images, including alt text.

The Common Crawl dataset is, in some form, the primary source used to train learning models, including our art generators.

Nobody Likes Watermarks

Watermarks are one of the easiest and most effective ways to remove your art from the training set.

If the model is trained using the LAION-5B dataset (https://laion.ai/blog/laion-5b/), for example, there's a good chance your art will be removed from the set to begin with if it has a watermark. LAION-5B is a filtered, image-focused version of the Common Crawl data, with NSFW and watermarked images filtered out.

Using this example provided by the LAION team, we can determine what kind of watermark will ensure your art is filtered from the dataset: partially transparent text placed over the image. Bots trained with data filtered similarly to LAION-5B will not be trained using your images if you use such a watermark.

As a bonus, if you include a watermark in your image and it somehow still makes it into a training set, the additional visual data will skew the training. It will assume any images it generates that are “inspired” by yours should include similar shapes and colors. The bot doesn’t actually understand what a watermark is and assumes it’s a natural element of the image.

404 Art Not Found

The reason we want to remove and re-upload images with new URLs is simple. The datasets these models study do not have actual images, they have the URLs pointing to images. If your image is no longer at that URL, the model can’t load your image, and any models trained with out-of-date datasets will not be able to locate your images.

However, this is only a temporary fix if you can’t prevent Common Crawler from recording the image’s new location in its monthly archiving of the internet.

Unusually Polite Thieves

The slightly more advanced tricks we can use to keep crawlers from recording the URLs of your images rely on the etiquette of crawler bots.

Firstly, keeping all your images in one domain has a chance to reduce the number of times models training from filtered datasets will reference your images in training. Crawling or scraping that results in significant negative impact on a domain’s bandwidth is bad. Like, legal action bad. The people behind the learning model generally want to avoid pissing off domain admins. So, there is a narrow chance that simply having all your images hosted on the same domain will prevent a model from trying to access all of them. It’s a bit of a stretch, though.

Something that is much more likely to see results is to plant the equivalent of “KEEP OUT” signs in your domain. Common Crawler, for all its presumption, follows bot etiquette and will obey any instructions left for it in robots.txt. Common Crawler’s bot is named CCBot. Create a robots.txt file and place it in the top-level folder of your domain. Make sure robots.txt includes User-agent: CCBot Disallow: / and CCBot will not archive your pages.

Using meta-tags in the headers of HTML pages on your domain will also help. Adding <meta name="robots" content="nofollow"> will tell any crawler robots not to follow any of the links from this page to other pages or files. If CCBot lands on your page, it won’t then discover all the other pages that page leads to.

The more advanced tactic is to disable hotlinking for your domain. When someone accesses an image hosted on your domain from somewhere other than your domain, this is called hotlinking. It’s not just a bandwidth sink, it’s also the exact process by which models are accessing your images for training.

This can be tricky: it involves creating and configuring a hidden file on your domain. The tutorial linked above in the step-by-step gives a simple look at what you can do by editing your .htaccess file, but searching “htaccess hotlink” will provide a bunch of other resources too.

Fucking Pinterest

Let’s cut to the chase: a majority of images in these training sets were scraped from Pinterest. Not DeviantArt! Not ArtStation! Literally 8%, of the billions of images collected, were from Pinterest. Image sharing social sites are the worst.

There’s no easy way to prevent people from resharing your images there, but between your new watermarks and the Pinterest takedown form, you can potentially keep ahead of it. 🫡

Now for the Downside

This won’t work on the models that already exist.

Unfortunately, we can’t untrain DALL-E or Midjourney. We can’t do anything about the data they’ve already studied. It stinks that this happened without common knowledge or forewarning, but all we can do is figure out how to move forward.

The good news is that while the current models are powerful and impressive, they still have some significant flaws. They’ll need more training if they want to live out the bizarre pie-in-the-sky, super fucking unethical dreams some of these weirdos have about “democratizing” art (which seems to mean eliminating trained artists altogether).

If we educate ourselves on how these models are trained and how the training sets are compiled, if we continue to make noise about artists’ rights to their own data, we can make sure this art-generator trend doesn’t somehow mutate into a thing that will genuinely replace living, biological artists.

Welcome back to class everyone! Now that we covered the basics of grounding, centering, and meditation, let's get to another very important part in getting in touch with your personal energy. Can you name the principles and goals that direct your day-to-day actions? Your advantages and disadvantages under diverse conditions? or the potential effects your attitudes and actions may have on those around you? If your response was "Not really," you might want to think about improving your level of self-awareness. According to research, doing so may increase your self-assurance, contentment, and even sense of control over your life, which is also a very important part in energy manipulation.

What Is Self-Awareness?

Self-awareness is the capacity to perceive oneself as the focus of attention or consciousness, according to psychology. The how and why of one's own psychological complexity are continuously being questioned by one's metaphysical consciousness, a kind of silent debate that is propelled by a psychological force that has long been referred to as spirit, the human spirit.

The word "meta" means "beyond" or "after," which introduces the idea of the mind as well as consciousness and the associated thoughts, feelings, and speculations. The powers of spirit, which are acting on the initiative of a soul, no less, are served by all of these examples of an intuitive range of consciousness that is considered to be inspirational. The outwardly oriented rational and sensory brain as well as the internally directed intuitive and spiritual brain have thus been recognized as the two components of human consciousness across time. They form the mental alliance known as the mind when combined.

You are engaging in self-awareness when you take a close look at yourself and are able to identify and connect emotions, fundamental beliefs, thoughts, and traits — including shortcomings and strengths — within yourself. But what self-awareness means will vary from person to person.

An aspect of self-awareness can be feeling self-conscious. You become conscious of yourself when you concentrate on and pinpoint aspects of your inner self, such as your beliefs, values, or purpose. On the other hand, developing self-awareness will lead to greater self-knowledge. Early in life, when you first become aware of your uniqueness and separation from your surroundings, your sense of self begins to take shape. With age, that sense of self tends to include an internal understanding of what makes you "you" — your preferences, ideals, interests, and goals. And even while you might think you know who you are completely, this may not always be the case.

Benefits of Self-Awareness

Finding out what we truly want from this priceless life is possible for each of us when we are self-aware and regularly engage in contemplation and introspection. We are all prone to outside pressure and individual prejudice. Self-awareness makes us more vulnerable than when we have it.

More Empathy & Compassion

One of the main advantages of self-awareness is that it makes us more empathetic toward others. You can create better relationships when you have the ability to empathize more. We all have the urge to be understood and the need to have our feelings supported. When we are offended, we frequently need this the most before we can listen to another viewpoint or a more reasonable explanation.

Improve Listening

There is an increasing shortage of people who can actively listen. The good news is that it leaves a nice impression once you begin to practice active listening. This serves as a fantastic example of the value of self-awareness because it enables you to develop genuine relationships. Better listening abilities are both a sign of self-awareness and a perk.

Critical Thinking Skills

Journaling

Perhaps one of the most frequently suggested self-awareness exercises is journaling. Writing about our lives enables us to become aware of our triggers, emotions, and priorities. Since we learn the most when we reflect, this is true. You can investigate self-discovery questions to increase self-awareness. Writing your feelings down will help you recognize and control them better. Keeping a journal will not only help you develop your emotional intelligence. It has also been demonstrated to lower stress levels, improve mood, and improve memory. Remember that there are proper and improper ways to journal. Make sure you're not just writing in your journal to complain or dwell on issues. Additionally, it's essential that you journal sparingly. Take a break from your notebook every now and again to give your inquisitive mind a rest.

Write Yourself a Letter

Writing without a particular audience in mind might be challenging for some people. Sadly, most of us don't have many folks who can be our "Dear _." Writing a letter to oneself is a straightforward fix. Whichever version of yourself you wish to address it to is your choice. Do you wish to offer your former self advice? You as a youngster? Maybe it's simpler to compose a letter to your future self. Who do you aspire to be? You don't need to practice self-awareness exercises like this one very frequently. However, if you do it, you might be pleasantly surprised by the knowledge you learn.

Write Your Own Eulogy

There is a far stronger link between the mind and body than most of us realize. Nevertheless, we frequently forget about our bodies when considering self-awareness activities. Our physical bodies are the foundation of our thoughts, emotions, and vice versa. This dates all the way back to when humans had to have the two in harmony in order to survive. Making it a practice to frequently "body check" yourself will help you become more self-aware. (And no, I'm not talking about a physical examination like you get in your doctor's office). You only need to pause for a moment to notice how your body is feeling. You'll be able to recognize what you require to be happy the sooner you learn to listen to your physique.

Daily Reflection

We occasionally associate reflection with large-scale, complicated activity. The modest habit of introspection is quite simple to include into your daily routine. Attaching a new habit to an existing one is the most effective strategy for doing so. Think about your everyday activities and the best places to pause and contemplate. Maybe it happens as you're making your way home from work, enjoying dinner with your significant other, or brushing your teeth before bed. Ask yourself "Why?" three times if you are debating a choice or feeling a certain way. At first, the questions could appear annoyingly repetitive. But if you persevere, you'll be astonished by the truth you uncover. We much too frequently only have a surface-level self-awareness. Let's assume, for illustration, that I choose to go for a run after work. I wish to run for what reason? because I'm anxious. Yes, but why do I feel anxious? I have a lot to do at work. Why do I work so hard at my job? Because of the impending deadlines and my perception that my coworkers aren't supporting me in my efforts. That's it. I can now move on to the deeper realities of the situation and begin making measures to help improve my situation. Don't ignore the advantages the "three whys" can provide for you.

Ask What?

It can seem incongruous to suggest asking "what" inquiries immediately after being instructed to ask the "three whys." But there is a time and place for each, and knowing the difference is crucial. We frequently adopt a blaming attitude, especially when we're feeling down. We become overcome by our emotions and go from a problem-solving to a "woe is me" frame of mind. We ponder issues such as "Why is this happening to me?" While entertaining in late-night philosophical discussions at the bar, these "why" inquiries don't prepare you for self-awareness in your own life. You can come closer to the realities you're seeking about your own life by asking "what" questions. Rather than, "Why am I unhappy?" You can inquire, "What is the root of my unhappiness?" You've suddenly expanded your window of opportunity for finding conclusive solutions. Try to be conscious of the language you use and the perspective you're telling stories from as you go about your day.

LUGAS AND RELEVANCY

the three relevant nekolugas, in order:

all three of these have a shot of getting a full review later on so this is just gonna be a quick run through

-lufalan pasalan at level 50 is a 720 range single target nuker with 20% chance to crit. it has 197100 damage per hit and 24233.61 dps. despite the obvious issues with its single target, it can work much better in later game in stages with less/no peons, stages where the peons can be easily cleared (with wavers/surgers), or metal stages where you can clear any metal peons with catyphoon and catasaurus. health is irrelevant; it's a luga, if it gets hit it dies. with talents, its crit chance increases to 30%, it gets surge resist and weaken immune for some unknown reason, and its dph and dps increase to 236520 and 29080.33 respectively. very strong unit, especially in lategame. can be described as a sort of ranged balrog. easily the best uber in the set.

-piccolan pasalan (level 30 because stats are irrelevant, it has 28.9 dps at level 60+70, no that's not a typo) is a 940 range area attack three second freeze + six second weaken to all traits + traitless with 16.43 tba (time between attacks). while this does give it a low uptime, the long freeze allows your units to get in and hit hard while they can. if enemies still manage to push, that just means that piccolan will be able to aoe freeze more of the field, making their push slower. no talents as of right now, but still a very solid CC unit.

-assassinlan pasalan is effectively cyberpunk without the blindspot. while its 1250 range without LD sounds broken in concept, its cooldown is much higher, it lacks the pierce that cyber's LD gives it, its tba is higher, and it cannot be stacked in the same way cyberpunk can because it will always hit the peons you would use to stack cyberpunk. however, its standing range is higher, its lack of a blindspot means if it gets pushed it can still slow, and through talents it gains the same slow time and 100% survive as talented cyberpunk. very strong and can be used alongside cyberpunk.

the rest of the set kinda sucks lol

legeluga's arguably the worst legend rare now that babel has a true form, nekoluga was the first uber rare added to the game but is just a generic backliner with knockback + freeze and tba is too long to do much, kubilan is just really weird, second form is high foreswing KB wave but not high enough range and kinda just dies sometimes, third form is too low damage to be an effective crit wave, shishilan...honestly not that good anymore, we just have better generalists and it lacks anything specific outside of wave immune which we have a ton of better units for at this point, nobiluga is shockingly irrelevant that mf got NO damage, papaluga is a meme (if you want me to actually talk about this thing just say the word), furiluga dies to anything and it's fully irrelevant once you get aku researcher, and kaoluga is weirdly...half decent? has solid damage with minisurge and great range? minisurge can hit backliners? 20% chance for knockback makes an occasional wall of permaKB? this one's actually solid ngl can't wait for true form but it's still unreliable as minisurge spawns between 150 and 1050 and its 3k dps isn't that great, there are better ubers

this set is a great example of how fucking hard things fall off in this game. duelist didn't just die when courier got added, it got murdered. most lugas died once better, more specialized, more niche units started being meta instead of the generalist CC or DPS units they tend to be. there are still three good and two half decent (shishi/kao) lugas but this set honestly sucks and you shouldn't be rolling this shit unless you really really really want luffy or smthn cuz you're gonna get nobiluga

Ok first of all you don't need to apologize!! Have you seen me? If anyone needs to apologize it's me, to all the people who followed me here years ago because I mostly talked about Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi and now I just appeared again out of nowhere to yell about gremlin bunnies. No regrets though, if I convince at least one bewildered onlooker to play these games somewhere down the line I'll be overjoyed.

I've had this saved on my computer for years haha. So anyway yes they definitely get up to some good times! They even dragged the Bwa Boys into it!

Now, my first instinct was to say that Rabbids probably didn't have a concept of annual holidays or anything before coming to the Mushroom Kingdom, being too chaotic for that, but honestly? They've been all over the universe, the multiverse even. I haven't played any Rabbids games outside of M+R except for the original Raving Rabbids which I barely remember. But I'm willing to bet there's some kind of holiday level or moment in at least SOME Rabbids media because that's such a common trope, not even to mention any more meta stuff like holiday art Ubisoft might have put out. So I'm sure they have a conception of a winter festival. How presumptuous of me to think otherwise!

However, I imagine their celebration of such a holiday would come with a number of bizarre traditions for which there is no obvious logical throughline to the season. Like, think of the strangest personal family tradition you have and crank that to the maximum. For instance, every Christmas Eve my partner and I watch the 90s Nickelodeon movie Goodburger, which we are about to do. Rabbids Christmas is just a whole slew of stuff like that. The denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom were at first confused by this, but came to enjoy it and even adopt some of the nonsense into their own celebrations.

The most heartwarming thing to me though, is that the Spark Hunters certainly would NOT have a conception of holidays. They were very purpose-built; why would Cursa imbue them with knowledge of anything that would distract them from their mission or waste time? So I like to imagine the other heroes gradually getting excited about the upcoming holidays and Edge just being like ".......???" And they get to teach her about everything. My heart!!

played metroid prime just like everyone else on the planet, apparently

it was ok (for a metroid game) (that means it is still pretty damn good)

But I can’t lie, given the reputation this game has, I was somewhat disappointed. For transparency, I did play it m+kb on my microsoft wii, though if I had shelled out the price for the remaster I doubt my experience would have been much different lol. Explanation below, with spoilers?

I’ll start with what it does well though, and that’s being Super Metroid but in 3d. In terms of exploration, how the world is presented, how you progress, etc. was translated to 3d pretty perfectly. Having pretty much no guidance and a full map, but still having one or maybe two actual correct ways that, if you just keep going forward or think about what you’ve seen before, you can find really easily. Honestly, in many ways, it just kinda feels like a really really big zelda dungeon. Or maybe zelda is a mini metroidvania. You decide! You can really see the bones of this game in so many modern metroidvanias. There’s not even really things you need to shoot a million times because of scan visor! 

And yeah, the scan visor is really cool. Being able to just scan to find out how to approach enemies, or how (or when) to get past obstacles, or learn stuff about the world is pretty neato. The other visors, though, were... ok, I guess. They aren’t interesting to use or anything, just *necessary to see certain enemies*, which I guess is fine just not nearly as interesting as scan visor. (They are also sort of an eyesore, and I imagine the remaster does improve on that)

Speaking of needing a thing to beat certain enemies, I just really hate the space pirates and drones and metroids that have a certain element that they can be hit by. This might just be some bias but I feel like they just take way too long to kill compared to their 2d counterparts, and being forced to use, say, ice beam (which shoots slow as hell) is just a slog. It kinda leads into my first major gripe, being that the combat feels like it takes a little too much of a spotlight for how... admittedly boring it can be. And this is with m+kb controls making aiming a lot better. I don’t really know if it’s actually just later enemies having too much health but the shooting doesn’t feel *that* fun or fluid, like in the 2d games, or out of the way, like in ori 1. Like if it was just a minor thing you just don’t have to think about I wouldn’t complain, but since fights take so long I can’t help but just be a little underwhelmed. 

It is definitely exacerbated by my second gripe, which is just that enemies, and especially bosses, are not that interesting? Like they have 1 or 2 attack patterns that you can recognize and dodge, and then you have your turn and you shoot them in the weak spot or with the weak element, rinse and repeat for however long. I think I can give it a little bit of a pass for how old the game is, but I just didn’t really feel that engaged by the bosses. Maybe that’s just a boss design thing and not the combat? I don’t know. Something in there just felt underwhelming.

One last thing to complain about, I promise, but I felt pretty much the entire last “act” was kind of... eh? I didn’t really care for the artifact hunt, it felt a little annoying (especially having to go through the space pirate research base again...). And then the back to back to back of Meta Ridley, Metroid Prime, then Metroid Prime again just really made a point of showing me the totally awesome boss fight design. Especially the final Metroid Prime form which I thought would be like Dark Beast Ganon like oh cool I super zap it to deal a ton of damage.... and then it dealt like maybe 1/10 of its health bar. And then it started summoning more metroids, some of which were the annoying ones. So it was just a really really... fun.... “I have my turn (for a full minute) and then you have yours (for 10 seconds)”. And to then top it all off, I don’t even get an evacuation sequence?? :/

This one’s a more minor, personal issue, and that’s just that I really don’t care to read so much lore. Environmental storytelling and worldbuilding, and ambient mood setting are things that I think Super Metroid perfected and nothing has really met, and that’s something I still believe even having played Prime. If you want to deliver story beats/developments/realizations in a game like this, you show don’t tell. I’m not delivering like a crazy revelation here, any writer knows this lol. But like, for example, to show that, say, the space pirates experimentations of phazon with metroids, instead of a bunch of space pirate data logs to read, there could have been like, idk, some metroid encounters or you see a metroid escape that looks unstable and oozing with phazon. And the chozo artifacts could definitely have been better tied to the phazon stuff too. It’s why I’ve always really enjoyed Fusion and Dread, even if they are departures from the way things are presented in Super, because they actually commit to narrative telling. Maybe I’m off base here, idk, but I just really wish there were less lore tablets and more intuitive things or like even straight up character interactions to show me what’s going on. I hope Silksong improves on that, but I doubt it. Wait what game are we talking about again?

Ok but enough negativity, I really enjoyed everything up to then. Like I said the actual metroidvania parts of it were really excellent. As good as Super Metroid? Not quite, but I do consider that pretty much peak metroidvania performance, so that’s a very high bar. It emulates it super well, and I was definitely really enjoying the full loop of unlocking and going further into the planet. The music too, was really good -- but again Super Metroid’s soundtrack is simply a masterpiece that I think even the 3DS and Switch’s adaptations/remasters of the same tracks don’t hit the same. 

All in all I think that’s pretty much a really good way to put it. It adapts Super Metroid’s strengths very well, but not quite to the extent of it, and some things do just get lost in the transition to 2D and 3D, I guess. It’s different from Fusion and Dread because those games are unabashedly more straightforward experiences, while still maintaining pretty much all the Metroid backbone and blood. It’s trying the same thing, but in a different form. I can respect it, but it’s definitely not my favorite. Which is a high bar! For reference I still end up rating this game pretty much a 9/10 - which may seem odd given all I’ve said, but I think for the most part this really hits the mark, and Metroid has just a really super good backbone, there’s just some.. growing pains? idk. I’ll definitely play the rest of the trilogy. I did see Dark Samus escape from metroid prime so... I think the next 2 games will definitely up the ante. Or maybe they won’t. We’ll see.

Thank you for the heads up. I don't follow them and haven't seen them post any nsfw of minors. I had a look through their blog and it seems they interpret and write Kirby as an adult (in line with how he is often depicted in the manga/Japanese fandom), but I understand why people who see him as a child (me included) are very uncomfortable with these ships. Personally I have no intention or desire of shipping Kirby romantically with anyone. (Least of all with adults.)

That being said, I don't appreciate people sending anonymous messages guilting me to either virtue signal to cover my ass or else seem callous towards the sexualisation and exploitation of (characters perceived as) children, just because I happened to reblog some Meta Knight expression sheet Tumblr recommended to me without first combing through their blog. (That's the only thing of them I have reblogged, as far as I'm aware.) If I saw someone repeatedly being weird about kids/ship something I don't like, I would simply block and avoid them/the tag. Hades: everyone and their mother told me to play this game (and they were right)

Main campaign date: 2023/11/30-12/12 Total playtime (Steam): 100.2 hours (and counting)

Been a while since I've finished a video game. I've been in more of a fiber crafting mood than a video gaming mood recently (still not done with FF6... lmao), but I spent the last month of 2023 being obsessed with Hades. (So much so that I barely logged in to FF14, and only then to raid log!) I don't think I can say much that hasn't already been said about this game, but I'll try to sum up my thoughts regardless.

Spoilers below.

This was my second roguelite; my first was Slay the Spire. (Since I've started with the "greatest hits" of the genre, I have a small worry that my future expectations will be skewed as a whole.) All facets of the game—from the combat, to the decision making for builds, to the overarching story—are enjoyable, and the game incentivizes the player to try new things in each of those areas. Each run, one of the weapons will grant bonus darkness and gemstones (meta currencies for making the player character stronger). Additionally, the "fated list of minor prophecies" incentivizes trying out every single boon at least once in exchange for meta currency rewards.

gameplay

Fairly intuitive control mapping on kb/m; could consider remapping special though (I press both Q and W with my 4th finger).

I'm bad at action video games in general (poor reaction times, tend to eat shit to boss mechanics even after understanding them), but I do enjoy the feeling of progression as I learn mob / boss movement patterns and attack rotations. I don't have to progress quickly, as long as I'm able to come up with a slightly better build, or see a new boss phase each time around.

The dash is quite generous with iframes (even without the Athena boon). As long as one doesn't attack while dashing, safety is guaranteed. It took me quite a few runs, but I finally understood this when fighting Hades with the fist weapons; without dashing through his spin attacks, uptime is quite limited. I was able to clear for the first time shortly after that (~20 hours of gameplay).

As I've been increasing heat, most of my runs have been using the rail (mostly Hestia, Eris aspects). I've had the fortune of seeing the cluster bomb + rocket bomb hammers ("clocket" build) a few times, but it doesn't show up consistently enough for me to use it as a crutch. My personal best is 25 heat; my main issue is reacting to FO2 (44% movement speed increase). I would like to eventually do 32 heat for Skelly's final statue, though!

I don't think there's anything I explicitly disliked, beyond the satyr mobs in Styx. They apply a heavy dot that needs to be cleansed by touching pools in difficult-to-reach / dangerous locations on the map. (For lower DPS builds, I had to weigh cleansing the dot vs trying to clear the room.)

meta progression/story

The player character is Zagreus, the son of Hades, who is attempting to escape the Underworld and reunite with his mother. Each attempt, he receives help from the Olympian gods in the form of boons (that modify the attack/special/cast/dash/call of his build); some friendly residents of the different biomes (Sisyphus, Eurydice, Patroclus); as well as Charon (in exchange for obols Zag picks up along the way).

I enjoyed the writers' sense of humor when it came to the characters and their interactions. I'm impressed by the amount of new (voiced!) dialogue I hear when I talk to each god, even after many runs. Shoutout to everyone's favorite tsundere (Thanatos), who warms up to Zag through the course of their interactions.

Getting to advance the story and receiving more permanent upgrades definitely made coming back to the House after a wipe more bearable (and also primed the desire to go again). Hypnos' contextual comments on cause of death were amusing, and seeing Meg and/or Thanatos was always a treat.

I enjoyed the happy ending and seeing Zag's family reunited, but also appreciated how the characters continued to work through their interpersonal issues (e.g., Dusa getting fired and then returning to the House thanks to Zagreus' intervention).

misc

Fishing in this game is simple, but difficult (for someone with poor reaction times). Once a fish bites, there's a particular interval in which the rarest fish are available; wait too long, and there's only a chance for the lower two tiers of fish. That being said, I still ended up with a Pavlovian response to the sound effect indicating an available fishing spot that plays when the room gets cleared.
