I’m actually crying over KB’s storyline in the newest episode of Skeleton Crew.

As someone who was the kid with disabilities, it sucked. You were always the one being left behind, the one working twice as hard just to keep up. You feel guilty for making your friends change how they do things to accommodate you but also a little angry because they should want to make things easier for you, because they’re your friends!! And sometimes people decide your friendship isn’t worth giving up their way of doing things, and that friendship fades into nothing.

KB pointed out that Fern not acknowledging her disability and treating her “like everyone else” was actually the opposite of her being a good friend. But Wim also pointed out that KB never expressed that to Fern due to her own fears that Fern won’t be her friend anymore (probably due to losing the rest of her friends post-accident).

I just think is SUCH an important message to show kids - that sometimes being treated equally isn’t actually equal treatment. Sometimes you have to have compassion and understanding for your friends who aren’t as able-bodied as you, and that it’s okay for disabled kids to speak up about their needs.

Warm, bright light pools in from the window and illuminates the room as Jod looms menacingly over the kids. He holds a blue lightsaber in his hands and uses it to threaten the innocent and vulnerable. Both previously symbols of hope and kindness and trust being twisted into something cruel. FUCK

One of my favorite things about Skeleton Crew was how Fern's crew was clearly and unrepentantly SM-33's favorite and this is demonstrated by the fact that he did not hesitate to fucking deck Jod as soon as he had a good enough excuse to do so

No wait because:

Luke meeting Fern and immediately seeing his twin sister in her — all of Leia’s strength and wit and the hairline fractures in her relentless passion for leadership. Luke making upgrades to Fern’s hoverbike and racing her through the trees before sitting with her and telling her that it’s okay to feel burdened by the weight of her expectations, to be afraid, and to trust her friends to stay loyal to her when she shows it.

Luke quietly sitting down with KB when she has to skip class again because her cybernetics are malfunctioning and asking if he could do maintenance on his own hand alongside her. Luke opening up to KB about how people always seem to forget that being a Jedi doesn’t magically erase your disabilities. Luke telling KB that no amount of Force wizardry can really make things like phantom pains and tremors go away completely and that he still needs to rely on assistive tech like she does. Luke reminding KB that few girls can calculate the odds as well as she can and cordially invites her to piss off his brother-in-law with that talent.

Luke giving Neel literally the biggest hug ever and promising him again and again that his kindness will never be a weakness, no matter how many people try to make him feel weak.

Luke letting Wim ask him a gazillion rapid-fire questions about the Jedi. Luke patiently answering every single one of them and even showing him some of the artifacts he’s found all over the galaxy before asking if he could have a copy of Wim’s bedtime stories to add to his collection. Luke teaching Wim an important lesson about being cautious about idolizing his heroes. When Wim asks who Luke’s hero was, Luke chuckles and says, “Well, let me tell you about the Hero With No Fear, who was very much afraid when I first met him.”

Getting the same vibes from these two scenes:

Fern: Yeah, the galaxy is scary and dangerous. Everywhere we went, even the worst places, there were good people too.

Omega: The Empire's not the only threat. We've seen so many in the galaxy like Mokko.

Tech: Unfortunately, yes. However, there are many like us out there as well. And that is something.

And I just love the subtle reminders to look for the good AND be the good ❤️

I believe that we as a fandom should insist on referring to Fern as "Captain Fern" in the way Jack Sparrow does

She worked hard for the position dammit, not easy killing the old Captain and taking their place
