You live disconnected in a world full of spirits and have the audacity to mock that until u it rocks you perfect little world!!?! i&i see little sovereignty and enough peasantry to question if we’re ready and that’s the sole reason the band-aid needs to be ripped off. • •• • Posted @withregram • @pictures_of_the_floating_world _______________________________________________ ”The Hell Courtesan, Jigoku Dayu” - By: Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889) ______________________________________________ Created in 1874, this fantastic, complex print, depicts a seated woman using an arm to prop up her head, shrouded in a red robe. With her eyes closed, she envisions many skeletons playing games and musical instruments, dancing, drinking and frolicking around her. However she is not disturbed by these nightmarish visions, because she is Jigoku Dayu, the “Hell Courtesan”, identified by the image of the Enma, the King of Hell, on the lower portion of her attire. The intensely coloured red robe suggests she is impersonating the Buddhist monk Daruma (Bodhidharma in Sanskrit). Though Daruma is not physically present in the image, it is not uncommon to see satirical images of this holy figure possessed with the appearance of a beautiful courtesan. This satirical convention seems to suggest that the Hell Courtesan is irresistible, even to the most holy. The artist Kyosai was both a painter and a print designer who often depicted bizarre, ironic and comic subjects. Not only was he an artistic genius, he also had a reputation as an eccentric character and a heavy saki drinker. His wild imagination and creativity earned him great success during his lifetime and after. In my opinion this design is easily one of his best work. ______________________________________________ #picturesofthefloatingworld #ukiyoe #浮世絵 #art #artist #artwork #fineart #japaneseart #japanesehistory #arthistory #arteducation #artmuseum #drawing #painting #woodblockprint #japaneseprint #printmaking #reliefprinting #japanesetattoo #kawanabekyosai #jigokudayu #courtesan #life (at San Francisco, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJONGoos9kQ/?igshid=1r6gje4svdgss
