Kauai Theater - A Tuna Christmas - Hawaii
Who says there is no nightlife or culture on Kauai? Kauai theater is alive and well! This month Women in Theatre are presenting, "A Tuna Christmas," a play which the New York Post claims, "It's far too good for just Christmas." I have been to several productions by the Women in Theatre group and I can not wait for this one. Three of my girlfriends and I have already bought our tickets. It sounds like a night of good fun.
A Tuna Christmas centers on the town’s annual Christmas Yard Display Contest, won 14 times in a row by Vera Carp. A mysterious “Christmas Phantom,” known for vandalizing the yard displays, threatens to throw the contest into turmoil. Among the subplots are Stanley Bumiller’s attempts to end his probation and leave Tuna, Bertha Bumiller’s trying to hold her family together at Christmas time, and Joe Bob Lipsey’s struggle to mount successfully his production of A Christmas Carol despite numerous vexations and obstacles.
Set in the fictional town of Tuna, Texas, the play is an affectionate comment on small-town Southern life and attitudes. With satire and humor, two actors play the entire cast of over twenty eccentric and crazy characters.

New Post has been published on https://vacationsoup.com/kauai-folk-festival-september/
Kauai Folk Festival Is Coming In September! Live Music in Hawaii!
The 2019 Kauai Folk Festival is a weekend full of music, dance, food, drink, craft and good times for Kauai residents and visitors to the Garden Island. This year more than 34 performers (multiple Grammy-winning artists and more than twelve international acts) will be playing continuously on five music stages. The Kauai Folk Festival blends traditional music and dance from all over the world with its Hawaiian counterpart. And, for the first time, this event will be held at the Historic Grove Farm Museum in Lihue.
The Kauai Folk Festival showcases Old Time, Americana,  Tropical, and Hawaiian music. Former Kauai resident, and Grammy winner, Taj Mahal, will be one of the more than 34 musical acts filling the air from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM on September 28th and 29th, 2019 (rain or shine).
2019 Kauai Folk Festival Musical Line-Up (from the website):
Taj Mahal - Blues legend Taj Mahal has a long history in Hawaii.  As a historian, he has studied the nuances of Hawaiian history and culture.  As a resident performer, he has come to know, play with, and record with countless Hawaiian artists.  His Hula Blues Band is a rotating cast of Hawaiian musicians fusing blues, folk, and Hawaiian music in the inimitable Taj Mahal style!
Kyle Campbell - Heralding from Knoxville, Tennessee, Kyle Campbell is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is best known as the frontman for The Bearded, who's repertoire includes old-time Appalachian dance tunes, jugband, vintage blues and bluegrass. A large part of the band's setlist consists of Campbell's originals as well. All of these sundries come together resulting in a "uniquely East Tennessee sound."
Jonny Fritz - There is no way to categorize Jonny Fritz.  His status among songwriters and the country and folk music elite is something of a phenomenon that has to be seen, heard, and experienced to be believed.  His songs and captivating stage presence are the stuff of legend. You will not forget what you’ve seen and heard…whether you want to or not!  “Dad Country” makes its debut appearance on Kauai at the Kauai Folk Festival.
The Montvales - A French-Appalachian folk duo performing in Hawaii for the first time!
Reeb Willms and Caleb Klauder - Half of the legendary Foghorn Stringband, Reeb Willms and Caleb Klauder have been touring the world as a country, folk, old time, and bluegrass duo for over a decade.  Pitch-perfect harmonies, original songs that seem like they’re 100 years old, and instrumental prowess that will knock your socks of. They’ll also be teaching harmony singing, mandolin, and guitar workshops to festival attendees who want to learn more about their unique and traditional styles.
Slo County Stumblers - Champion fiddler Casy Meikle’s mid-country old time quartet. Hot fiddle and banjo numbers for dancing!
Peter Rowan - Peter Rowan is largely known for his role in Bill Monroe’s legendary Bluegrass Boys and as a bandmate in ‘Old and in the Way’ with fellow legends Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Vassar Clements, and John Kahn.  There is no one in folk/bluegrass history who has played with more ensembles, recorded more legendary albums, or explored as many musical landscapes.  Rowan's ‘My Aloha’ Bluegrass Band is formed around his 2017 release “My Aloha” - a fun fusion of bluegrass, folk, and Hawaiian musical styles.
Kilin Reece - Luthier, historian, and virtuoso multi-instrumentalist performing with a number of acts and presenting his groundbreaking research on the undiscovered or long-forgotten links between global musical styles and their Hawaiian counterparts.  He is our soul brother and the link that’s holding this whole concept together.
Mike Bub - Read the liner notes on just about any classic bluegrass album and you’ll see Mike Bub’s name listed as bassist.  His omnipresence in the bluegrass and honky tonk scenes has earned him the nickname “Sir Bub” among many.  He’ll be performing with several ensembles at the Kauai Folk Festival and teaching an upright bass workshop.
Ed Poullard - Ed Poullard is a master fiddler, accordionist, and Cajun accordion builder.  The creole fiddling tradition in Southern Louisiana is one of the many unusual styles of folk music represented at the Kauai Folk Festival.  He will be performing with a full band as well as teaching creole fiddle styles at the Kauai Folk Festival.
Jordy - 18-year-old Kauai-based songwriter and her magnificent band.
Sashamon - Kauai’s reggae hero teams up with Molokai-based ukulele/guitar virtuoso and singer…songs of the old country.
Tim Obrien and Jan Fabricos - As a founding member of the band ‘Hot Rize’, Wheeling, West Virginia native Tim O’Brien is lauded as the greatest multi-instrumental songwriter in folk music.  He has recorded several albums, played with countless ensembles, and brings his powerful voice and instrumentalism to the Kauai Folk Festival in his very first appearance on Kauai alongside his life and musical partner, Jan Fabricius - a singer perfectly matched to O’Brien’s signature sound.
Uncle Shuffelo and his Haint Hollow Hootenany - Hands down the most powerful old time stringband in the world. The Shuffelo and Derryberry families hail from rural Middle Tennessee
Caroline Pond and the Rainbow Stringband - North Carolina native fiddler/singer and her FUN band from Honolulu!
AND MORE!
Artist Workshops (included in ticket price):
This is a new addition to the festival format. Performers will share in workshops on guitar, fiddle, banjo, ukulele and mandolin. Jam stations and loaner instruments will be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring instruments.
Dance instructors will teach hula, square dance, swing and two-step. Voice instructors will teach harmony singing, ballads and Hawaiian song.
Food and Drink
Food and drink will be available from vendors, including Kauai Juice Co, Po'okela Sausage, Uncle D's Vegan BBQ, Ya Quddus Bagels, Maui Brewing Co, Kupu Spirits and more.
2019 Kauai Folk Festival Location:
In previous years, the Kauai Folk Festival has been held on the north shore of Kauai. This year it will be more centrally located at the historic Grove Farm Museum, a 100 acre property in the heart of Lihue. Built in 1864 Grove Farm maintains the plantation era environment of years past. The folk and aloha of this festival combines perfectly with this new venue. Proceeds from this event will go toward the preservation efforts of the Grove Farm Museum.
Grove Farm Museum is located at 4050 Nawiliwili Road, Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii 96766.

New Post has been published on https://vacationsoup.com/beers-for-a-cause-at-a-local-kauai-brewery/
"Beers For A Cause" At A Local Kauai Brewery
On March 18th, a popular Kauai brewery, Kauai Beer Company, will be hosting "Beers For A Cause." Not that most people need a reason to have a beer or two, on this day $1.00 spent on every pint or goblet will go to help Kauai's animals in need. The Kauai Humane Society and Kauai Beer Company have joined forces to support this important cause.
Kauai Beer Company, in Lihue, is a social place to be, with locally made craft brews, good food and friendly people. From the website we learn, "Opened in Fall 2013, the Kauai Beer Company has become a destination for residents and guests. Our neighborhood microbrewery produces artisan batches of high-quality craft beer, served in a relaxed atmosphere, making all our friends feel completely at home. The creative food menu rivals the brew and stands on its own as a reason to visit." Hear about this family's passion for making beer directly from the father and son owners:
When you go to this Kauai brewery's website, you'll see their own flagship drafts listed. Lihue Lager is a malty German style pale lager, with a blend of traditional and tropical flavored hops. Black Limousine is a light bodied, dark color with ruby highlights. It has complex toffee, caramel and coffee up front, a roasty finish and just enough hops to round it out. In addition, Kauai Beer Company sells six other seasonal beers which they also brew. These include Guava Wheat, Weyermann Pils, Golden Summer SMaSH, Citrus IPA, KokoBoPo and Tri-Centennial Triple IPA. Prices range from a 4 oz. draft for $2.00 to the 64 oz Growler Refill for $18.00.
Other drinks available include ciders by the bottle, wine, sake and junmai by the glass, kombucha on tap, root beer and sun tea.
As the video mentions, the food at this Kauai brewery is not to be discounted. Their food menu includes six appetizer choices, two salads, soup of the day and three entrees:
Schnitzel Plate
Pork cutlet, mushroom gravy, kale sauteed with tasso ham, potato salad
$15
Kauai Island Stir Fry
Farmers market vegetables, garlic, ginger, hawaiian chili sauce, tofu, scoop of rice
$11
Brew House Mac N' Cheese
Add Bacon $5
$9
Kauai Beer Company also offers four sandwich choices:
Rice Street Reuben (pictured above)
Pastrami, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, russian dressing served on rye
$15
Portobello Reuben
A vegie style Reuben Sandwich
$15
Portobello Mushroom Sandwich
Hot smoked mushroom, lettuce, tomato, vegan mayo
$15
Ponzu Pork Sandwich
Pulled pork, kale slaw and spicy remoulade served on a brioche bun
$16
Weekly Events:
On Wednesday night only, Kauai Beer Company offers regular and large cuts of roast beef. They smoke a whole boneless beef roast all day. Served with scalloped potatoes, broccoli, small side salad, au jus, and horseradish cream, it is a special meal at $24 or $32. Service starts at 5:00 pm and lasts until the beef is gone.
Thursday night is Truck Stop Night where food trucks are invited to park in front of the restaurant. Match up the perfect drink with delicious food from a variety of popular food trucks: D Green's BBQ, Chip Wrecked, Kickshaws, Craving Thai, Live Fire Pizza and Rafael's Aloha. Check the calendar for which trucks will be at Kauai Beer Company on which Thursday.
Kauai Beer Company has a lot to offer in the heart of Lihue on Rice Street. If you are waiting for that late night flight, or driving back from the Waimea Canyon, this Kauai brewery might just be the perfect spot to stop and have a beer and a bite to eat. Enjoy!

Daniel Hsu Comes To Kauai - March 8, 2019
Daniel Hsu, bronze medal winner at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will be performing on Kauai, March 8th. Characterized by the Philadelphia Inquirer as a “poet…[with] an expressive edge to his playing that charms, questions, and coaxes,” Daniel Hsu is the latest of the exceptionally talented performers the Kauai Concert Association brings to the island each year.
We are lucky to have the Kauai Concert Association on our tiny island of Kauai. A large part of KCA’s mission is to provide music education outreach opportunities to Kauai’s students. The Education Services Committee works with school administrators and visiting artists to deliver live performances and master classes all over the island. KCA's goal is to make world class music available to everyone on Kauai. Performances are held at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center and parking is easy and free.
From Daniel Hsu's website:
A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Daniel Hsu began taking piano lessons at age 6 with Larisa Kagan. He made his concerto debut with the Fremont Symphony Orchestra at age 8, and his recital debut at the Steinway Society of the Bay Area at age 9, before being accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music at the age of 10, along with his two older siblings. Since then, he has made his debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra (2016) and Carnegie Hall (2017) as part of the CAG Winners Series at Weill Recital Hall. He has appeared in recitals at the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, and Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, as well as in concerts in Philadelphia, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Portland, and New York. With orchestra, Daniel has collaborated with the Tokyo, North Carolina, Grand Rapids, New Haven, and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras, working with conductors Leonard Slatkin, Nicholas McGegan, Cristian Măcelaru, Ruth Reinhardt, and Marcelo Lehninger.
Now 21 years old, Daniel is currently the Richard A. Doran Fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he has studied with Gary Graffman, Robert McDonald, and Eleanor Sokoloff.
Daniel Hsu's performance will be Friday, March 8th, from 7:00 - 9:00 PM.
Tickets are $30 for adults, $10 for students.
