I had to stop at Waiahole Poi Factory (no, I'm not sponsored) to try a dish very closely related to the cultural heritage of Hawai'i... poi! It is made from cooked and crushed taro, a tuber plant (similar to a potato) so tightly connected to the Hawaiian cultural stories and religion that the plant itself is believed to be a direct ancestor to native Hawaiians... they have such a fascinating creation story! At this family-owned business, making poi is a purely homemade, hand-crushed labor of love. They stay very busy, but were very kind to take the time to help me pick out some plant-based options amongst their large assortment of authentic Hawaiian cuisine. I had already eaten prior, but as a veggie-based snack, I tried the Ho'io salad (image 2, left) and the hand-crushed poi (right). I hold the opinion that poi is an acquired taste, but an authentic cultural delicacy that is 100% worth a try when you are visiting Hawai'i! I know I would have regretted it if I hadn't tried it, so I implore you to taste the traditional flavors of Hawai'i and try some of the freshest poi on the island of O'ahu at the Waiahole Poi Factory! #waiahole #waiaholepoifactory #waiāhole #poi #taro #tarô #hawaiianhistory #hawaii #hawaiitravel #hawaiivacation #hawaiistagram #hawaiian #taroplant #hawaiianpoi #homemadepoi #freshpoi #hoiosalad #travelvlogger #travelblogger #travelphotography #travelfood #authentichawaiianfood #familyownedrestaurant #hawaiianrestaurant #hawaiianfood #placestoeatinhawaii #vlogger #femalesolotraveler #followme #travelwithme (at Waiahole Poi Factory) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEkVdWJAKJJ/?igshid=plv5uz3wqv42

Waikīkī Aquarium and the Honolulu Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts hosted Seasons and the Sea, to celebrate the official changing of the seasons, from Hoʻoilo (wet season) to Kauwela (hot or warm-dry season). Cultural advisor Sam ʻOhukaniʻōhiʻa Gon III led this free and unique sunset ceremony through chant, hula and moʻolelo (storytelling) as the sun set into the crown of Pu’u o Kapolei, an occurence that happens only once a year. #waikiki #hooilo #kauwela #puuokapolei #hawaiianhistory #hawaiianculture #hawaiian #hawaii (at Waikiki Aquarium) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw_iV-OBVJW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1g3i0haosojk1

Sunsets in Hawai‘i can be of the most beautiful in the world 😍 But did you know this:⠀ “If you watch the sunset with a group of people, particularly near a resort, there’s an excellent chance you’ll witness the Hawaiian Pū ceremony. At sunset, it’s traditional to blow a shell horn. The first note of the horn is blown when the bottom of the sun touches the water. Three more notes are blown, with the last sounded when the sun disappears. The notes call four Hawaiian gods. A final note of goodbye and Mahalo (thanks) ends the ceremony. The Pū is not blown at night, because then it might summon darker spirits.”⠀ ⠀ Source: “The Scientific Reason Why Hawaiian Sunsets Are So Beautiful,” posted on August 13, 2018 by Anne Helmenstine (updated on May 10, 2021) - https://buff.ly/3ttu0HM⠀ ⠀ #YahnnyBlyandCo #YBCtheWorld #TravelDesigner #BespokeTravel #SustainableTravel #ResponsibleTravel #EthicalTravel #ExpeditionGuide #Hawaii #HawaiianSunset #HawaiianHistory #HawaiianCulture #Aloha #YASLPhotosandStories (at Oahu, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/CToRAoyKwA3/?utm_medium=tumblr

Okay we’re finally getting to the design process behind my Moana cosplay!! . . It wasn’t feasible for me to make an actual kapa skirt, I was limited on time, materials, and the fact that I am a potato with too many craft supplies, not a practiced kapa artisan. So I made my cosplay using cotton canvas to imitate the look and feel of soft kapa, acrylic paints mixed in fabric medium, and stamps cut from dollar store sponges, because we make do. . . But I wanted to pay homage to the tradition of kapa in my stylized design, using the basic shapes from the Disney Moana design and patterns, symbols, and colors from surviving extant kapa and tapa tapestries. . . One symbol I definitely wanted to include was the symbol for mauna, or mountains. In Hawai’i, the summit of Mauna O Wakea is called the piko, meaning peak, but it also indicates connection to ancestors and the generations who came before you. The Hawaiian people are all descended from the mountain (which is why it’s so insulting to build the Thirty Meter Telescope there). . . Another symbol I wanted to include (on the top) was the hoku, or star. Polynesians used the stars to navigate on their explorations as far back as 3000 BCE. They were the first humans to travel great distances across the ocean, and I was so happy to see Moana using the stars too. . . I also included symbols for shark teeth, fish scales, waves, and more!! Swipe through to see the stamping process, a closeup of the flower, and my adorable grandma sewing the feathered trim on!! . . Thank you all for following along with this series, and if you have more questions please let me know!! . . #moana #moanacosplay #disney #disneycosplay #disneyprincess #disneyprincesses #hawaii #oahu #islandgirl #northshoreoahu #haleiwa #cosplay #cosplayergirl #cosplayer #costume #costumer #tapa #hula #huladance #beach #beachcosplay #howfarillgo #tefiti #teka #princess #representationmatters #kapa #hawaiianhistory (at Oahu, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCy4bepjPC2/?igshid=1c1hod4kzlmj9

Aloha, Im working with a friend and colleague, Dr. Keaoopuokalani Nesmith who is doing a presentation on the vast chief (highest chief) King Kaumualii, to Kamehameha I and father of Queen Kapiolani ; the wife of King Kalakaua of the Kalakaua Dynasty. Keao’s presentation this , Thursday, September the 19th, 2019 , he will be talking about the King Kaumuali’i vision for the land and his influence with King Kalakaua. Dr. Nesmith was born in Kekaha, of The West Kauai. He is a linguist in ‘oleo Hawai’i and ‘olelo Niihau which he learned from speaking with his great-grandmother, grandmother, and support of his surrounding Niihau friends. Keao also helps with Napali Coast ‘Ohana, where we also have worked together before. He is also an educator, translator and culture practitioner. He taught in Hilo, Hawai’i and Manoa at the University of Hawaii were he revived his graduate and post- graduate degrees; Tahiti and New Zealand where he received his PhD. Dr. Nesmith currently practices at Manoa, and has translated English literature into Olelo , such as The Hobbit, Alice in a Wonderland, and The Little Prince. His new releases in ‘olelo translation is on J.K. Rowlings ‘Harry Potter’s Sorcery Stone and currently working on ‘Chronicles of Narnia’. On Thursday, Dr. Nesmith, a co-developer of Phase 1 of Kuapapa o Kaua’i for and with The County of Kauai, the resource for moku, ahupua’a, place names and mo’olelo during Kaumuali’i’s time. He is the model for the statue of Friends of Kaumuali’i , a Kaumualii statuette sculptored by Saim Caglayan , that will be placed on The West Kaua’i. His speaking session will give the audience time to inquire and get feedback on both Kuapapa and the tall Kaumuali’i statue. I recommend coming to his talk, to learn about the transition that was happening then, that great influences of the times, and events we see now today.
