Ten Times As Long - Chapter 2
Katniss Learns the Truth
A/N: Right before sunset (She just ran out and found him like in the book)
I stare at him dead in the eye. I start to slowly walk backwards to get away from him, but he drops his shovel and before I can react he's hugging me! Hugging me? Really? After everything… Is he going to try to kill me?
When he realizes I’m not hugging back he steps away, “I’m sorry, Katniss. I’m so, so sorry! I didn’t mean it! I- I love you,” He starts to cry and my heart can’t take it anymore.
“Stop it! If you’re going to cry, just leave. I’ll listen to you, but you have to promise you’ll leave me alone after!” He takes a step back stunned.
“What did I do? I ruined everything. You hate me and I hurt you! I'm so sorry!" l've done so much to hurt you… I don’t deserve your forgiveness!”
I sigh and look into his electric blue eyes, “I don’t hate you. We've talked about this. You aren't a monster. I don’t feel safe around you, but you aren’t a monster,” I was trying make him feel better, but he just looks more hurt. I turn because I can’t look into his sad eyes any longer.
“I still love you,” As he says this I stop.
“I’ll see you around, Peeta,” I smile to myself as I go back inside.
When I get inside, and shut the door, I collapse into a crying mess, “Oh Peeta…” I whisper to myself.

Biting Katniss headcanons? 😅 Does Peeta ever bite back?
i think @rosegardeninwinter said it best when she said that katniss gives the nips and the nibbles (and yes, peeta does love it - even if he is a lil confused at first).
like i said before, its something i can see her doing when she’s overwhelmed and doesn’t know how to handle all the love that she’s feeling and so she just has a little bite. she’ll go for whatever she can reach, but her most common spots are probably his shoulders and biceps (why, dear anon? because they’re the meatiest). but she’s also partial to nipping his ear or his fingers, not because she’s overwhelmed with love - those kind are just because she’s a menace.
like. he’s trying a new recipe and offers for her to try, scooping some up on his finger to let her taste. what is she supposed to do? not bite his finger? come on now lets get real. you’d think he would learn his lesson but he absolutely does NOT.
and of course he picks up on her bad behavior too. and he catches on quickly, too. once he gets over the initial shock that she just bit him, he is absolutely going to get his own back. they make a feral pair. (but he’s always much gentler than her).
#everlark headcanons#asks#continuing the katniss bites crusade#spreading the truth#im also just now wondering if this is the same anon who asked me to elaborate#and i took that to mean they didn’t understand rather than they wanted more detail oops#also a disclaimer that i dont mean she bites to like. draw blood or even leave a mark (most of the time).#and peeta really doesn’t care he will bite ass he will bite ankles#neither of them learn their lesson they always go back for more#they’re allowed little nibbles. as a treat.

yessss that defo answers my questions! ur thoughts on compassion & community intertwined w rebellion definitely show up in ur art lol. something more specific i have been curious abt is ur version of the endings of each specific hunger games & ur characterization/portrayal of the victors at those points! if u have any more thoughts abt any of those characters or their games id love to hear.... im also very not neurotypical abt hunger games
For sure!! But this is a novel and a half so I apologize in advance (also most of this is from memory so anyone can correct me if I'm getting any details wrong)
((TW: For visual depictions of Blood, Gore, and Wounds))
I realized I'd seen barely any art showing what the victors would have looked like when they won their games. They were all just kids and I feel like it can be easy to forget that sometimes
For all of them, I made the background one of their main "weapons" but tried to make it look like its turning back on them instead since there are no victors as Haymitch said.
I'll try to explain them all more in depth individually going in the order I drew them:
Finnick Odair, 65th Games:
His main weapons were his trident and nets that he made with vines. His background is one of the nets ready to trap him.
Finnick was the youngest victor ever at only 14. I really really wanted to emphasize just how little that is. (Especially since we know exactly why the Capitol loved him from the start…) Once I actually drew him looking that little I had to step away for a bit because I made myself too sad…
Outside of just how horrific his age is as a concept, I tried to think about what circumstances would lead to him actually winning when surrounded by older tributes. I think he would have had to avoid any kind of fight he didn't have the upper hand in. We know that he got the most expensive sponsor gifts in the history of the games (a trident), so he probably got plenty of sponsors outside of that as well. Because of that I doubt he needed to go looking for supplies much if ever so it was easy to avoid people there. He was also probably in a career pack, despite his age, due to his training and his popularity, and they would have hunted other tributes down together much like the one we saw in the first book (safer in numbers). Once it was narrowing down and the pack broke is when I think he started catching people in nets. All of that is a long winded way of saying that's why, unlike the other victors I drew, I only show him with minor cuts and bruises.
Originally I was going to draw him with a kind of strained smile like he was acting for an audience from the start. But I decided I actually think its sadder if he believed he was popular because of his skill and strategy as a fighter and only learned the whole truth after he won and that's when he started acting more for the camera. Instead I gave him a more muted despair kind of look, like his world is crashing down. One of my favorite parts about the movies, mainly THG and ABOSAS, is when they give the career tributes at the end a moment of realization about what they've done, and I wanted to give Finnick his. I'm a person that believes Finnick had to have volunteered for his games. I think he would have legitimately believed in the propaganda the career districts were fed and had a bit of a (very middle school boy) ego about his abilities. (I was NOT expecting to write so much about his lmao)
Enobaria, 62nd Games
She's most well known for ripping someones throat out with her teeth. (Her background is her sharpened teeth getting ready to eat her.) This is treated by The Capitol, and by Katniss, as grotesque and terrifying blood lust (Which obviously the Capitol loves her for). However, and I'm not at all the first to say it, that sounds more like a terrified and desperate attempt to survive a fight she was losing and an example of hysterical strength. We know that Career packs have had bloody betrayals in the past and I can see Enobaria being a part of one of them. Enobaria doesn't have a canonical age, but I decided to put her on the younger side (15 or 16.) I can imagine some of the older, bigger tributes deciding she was the weakest link towards the end and that was the result. I tried to make the blood around her mouth and down her shirt look more faded, like she tried desperately to wipe it off (Also I had to step away from drawing again after I drew her little tooth gap)
I think she probably leaned into the bloodthirsty image afterwards as a way to protect herself and (maybe even started to believe it too)
Annie Cresta, 70th Games
Annie's known for losing her mind after seeing her district partner decapitated in front of her. After that, she ran off and hid until the game makers started an earth quake, which made the large dam in the arena break and cause a huge flood. Annie was the only survivor because she was the strongest swimmer. So I decided to make her background dark water that's churning up and over her head. I also think it can work well as a way to show her mental state in the moment (and afterwards) Annie is actually one of my favorite characters in the series and I've been writing out a plan for a possible comic series about her that'll go more in depth about my headcanons for her. (when I say comic series, I mean sketches and oneshots, not a full thing lmao) It wouldn't take place during her games (outside of a few flashbacks when I need more context), instead it would start at her Victory Tour and go into her first (and last) year as a mentor for the 71st Games. Which is a perfect segue to-
Johanna Mason, 71st Games
Johanna is actually first mentioned early on in the first book when Katniss is wondering if the reason Peeta is crying is because he plans to act weak and helpless as a strategy in the games. (Katniss, he just found out he has to fight in a murder tournament with his crush. He's just Sad.) She bases her theory on Johanna, who pretended she was a "sniveling, cowardly fool" in the arena until the final stretch of the games when she proved to be deadly with an axe.
OR….. Katniss is an unreliable narrator and Johanna was actually a terrified kid from a district with so few victors that she was the only name in the bowl for the Quarter Quell… This is totally just a personal headcanon of mine tho lol. I think there would have been a point in her games where she realized she actually had a chance and that's when she seemingly had a huge character turn around. Maybe there was a infighting with the careers that ended in multiple deaths and there was only a few left along with any other tributes hiding away like her. Maybe she poked around what was left of their camp, found the axe, and felt strength from her district.
Her background was a little harder for me. Just slapping a big axe behind her felt cheesy. But them I remembered her saying there was no one left that she loved. So instead I put trees that could represent her loved ones (Two fully grown trees, a younger "teenage" tree, and a sapling) that are in the process of being cut down.
Haymitch Abernathy, 50th Games
Don't worry, I'm almost done. I don't have as much to say about Haymitch since we know SO much about what happened in his games. But his background was probably the hardest for me. His main weapon was invisible after all. I thought maybe the axe that was used, but again, That would look cheesy. I tried (and kinda failed imo) to draw the cliff side the force field was on instead. But the main thing I did was split the three panels I had on the previous drawings into six for two reasons. 1: Because he had to face twice as many tributes in order to win and 2: Being the only victor of a district that's tributes are seen as fodder for the blood bath means he had to meet and watch the death of twice as many kids every year.

I absolutely disagree with the sentiment that Capitol citizens travel to the Districts, specifically District 4, to go on vacation.
While we learn that they used to do that pre-war, the radicalisation in the Capitol's belief of their own superiority calls for a separation in their daily lives from the District citizens. De-humanising the District people through physical separation, propaganda can shape the image of what their daily lives must look like. No longer are they dependent on being faced with reality ever so often; or the Capitol having to frequently assure that their own citizens are not seeing the plight of the Districts.
De-facto, the artificial domes of past Games are likely what have replaced any previous vacation spots. They are fast to travel to with a diverse landscape. While Katniss cites them as spots to re-enact the Games, they might also be re-used as relaxation spots. Capitol people knowingly going skiing in the mountains where Titus died, getting the kids to play by the water where tributes drowned in Annie's games, or going camping in between Rue's final moments. It's a perfidious ignorance and a complicity in their own actions.
This is also a great example on how nature within the series separates the Capitol from the Districts. Even on vacation in snowy mountains, on the beachside, or in the forest, the Capitol does not experience truthful nature. All they know is a fabricated image. There is a large debate to be had about Katniss' ties to nature in its contrast, whereupon the Hunger Games themselves are a series of humanity's ties cut with what is the natural world, but the Capitol is the opposite end of this. Nothing they do or see is a natural creation. Their holiday choice ought to reflect that.

(johanna mason x reader)
cw: panic attacks, crying, mentions of torture
link to the request → reader helping johanna overcome her fear of water
You eye Johanna critically from across the room. It’s been weeks since she’s been rescued from the Capitol and she’s been completely ignoring you since then. Every time you ask her if she’s okay or if you can do anything for her, she brushes you off.
You understand that she’s been through a lot, but as her girlfriend, her indifference upset you. In an effort to keep yourself busy, you spend most of your time with Beetee in the weapons room, helping to design defensive strategies. Ever since you banned Gale from helping, things have been better on that front.
“Stop looking at me like I’m going to collapse at any moment.” Johanna calls out to you. She’s playing with the sheets on her bed, not even looking in your direction.
You sigh. “I just want you to be okay, Jo. I worry about you.”
She sneers down at her sheets. “Worry about me when Snow’s dead.”
So you do. After Katniss kills President Coin, Snow dies, and the underground community of District 13 falls apart, you move to District 7 and begin to worry about Johanna like it’s a full time job.
It starts with weaning her off of her morphling supply. You two live in the middle of the woods, so there’s no easy access to the drug, nor do you want Johanna using it to cope anymore. It takes her weeks to get back to her healthy self, which brings you great relief.
The other issue that you quickly learn about is Johanna’s newfound fear of water. You quickly piece together that when she was held captive by the Capitol, they used water as a form of torture for her. She doesn’t like talking about it, but you can see the truth in the way her face scrunches up in fear whenever she’s confronted with water.
It breaks your heart.
You decide to take matters into your own hands once again. You helped her with her morphling withdrawals, you think, how much harder can it be to help her overcome her fear of water?
“Come on, Jo,” you plead with her. “I want to go down to the lake.”
You don’t really want to go to the lake- swimming in freshwater scares you a little bit- but you figure this is a good step one.
Johanna eyes you with a look of disdain on her face. “I don’t want to go. I’m sure there’s a hundred other people in District 7 that would love to join you.”
You grab her hand and kiss her palm. “But there’s no one else in this district that I love like I love you.” You know as soon as you say the words that you’ve sufficiently sweet talked her.
Johanna likes to pretend that she’s tough, but she’s really a giant softy.
Once you actually make it down to the lake, three hours later, Johanna grips your hand with all of her strength, it seems. You take it in stride, though, and hold on just as tight.
“It looks beautiful,” you comment, staring at the water. “Reminds me of you.”
It really does. The way the trees cast a shade upon the surface perfectly complements the highlights from the sun. Just like Johanna, there’s darkness and light.
Johanna rolls her eyes and sets your belongings down on the grass. “Go on, have your fun. I’ll be over here.”
You pout. “Oh. I wanted you to join me.”
The pained look that you’re now so familiar with makes its return. “You know that I don’t want to.”
You instantly melt, wrapping your arms around her. She clings back to you just as tight. “You don’t have to, my love. I just want you to be able to let go of what they did to you. I want you to reclaim it.”
Johanna pulls back and looks into your eyes. “Yeah. You’re right.” And with renewed vigor, Johanna grabs your hand and pulls you to the lake, kicking off her shoes along the way. When she gets to the water’s edge, she stops suddenly.
“What’s wrong, baby?” You ask, letting your own toes dip into the water.
“I don’t know if I can do it,” she says in a soft tone. “I don’t think I can reclaim it.”
You frown, standing in front of her. “Jo, if you don’t want to go in you absolutely don’t have to. It was just a stupid idea.”
Now it’s her turn to frown. “It’s not stupid, you were just trying to help me.” With that, she dips her toes in the lake.
Your jaw drops. You were not expecting her to go in the water that easily. “Baby, you did it!”
Johanna closes her eyes. “Can we eat lunch now?”
You grin. “Of course.”
After that day, you don’t force her to deal with water so boldly for another few weeks. The next time you bring up the exposure therapy is during a rainstorm that has your girlfriend curled up on the couch holding her ears.
“How about,” you say, rubbing her back. “After this has all cleared up, we do something fun.”
“Like what?” Her voice is muffled by a pillow.
“We can jump in the puddles outside.”
Johanna tenses, more than she already was. “And how is that supposed to be fun?”
You lean down and kiss her nose. “I always used to do that when I was a kid. I liked it. And I feel like it’ll help with what we’ve been working on. You’re scared of this rain, but we’ll have fun playing in the puddles it provides afterwards.”
Johanna looks at you, trust in her eyes. “Okay.”
So that’s what you do.
After the rain ends, it barely takes any coaxing to get Johanna out of the house and bounding into puddles. Once she sees you do it, giggles leaving your lips with each jump, she joins in.
“This isn’t so bad,” she admits, wiping some mud that splashed up on her off of her arms. “It’s kind of nice.”
You nod, grabbing both of her hands. “It is what you make it, baby.”
That’s what you repeat to her when it’s time to get in the shower upon your return home. “It is what you make it, baby. You need to clean off.”
Johanna shakes her head. “I can’t. This is too much.” It breaks your heart to see tears flowing freely from her eyes.
“I’ll be there with you the entire time. Holding you, kissing you. This is just going to be another good memory,” you try to convince her.
Without wasting another moment, you strip out of your filthy clothes and throw them in the hamper. You then turn on the shower, heart panging at the sound of another one of Johanna’s sobs.
You turn back to your girlfriend, helping her strip as well. You pepper kisses all over her cheeks and lips, hands running over her back. “Let’s wash off, baby. It’ll be quick.”
You step into the shower, just standing under the stream. You think that maybe if she sees that you’re okay under the flow of water, she will be too.
That hope doesn’t last long- Johanna just stands and watches you with tears in her eyes, hands twisting together.
“Come on,” you plead. “You can’t stay covered in mud forever. And I’m lonely in here. I need you with me, always.”
That seems to do it. Johanna takes a step forward, then another, and then eventually she collapses in your arms, sobs wracking her body.
“That’s my girl,” you say, petting her hair. “I’ve never been so proud of you in my life.” You continue to repeat positive affirmations to her, holding her close to you.
After a few minutes, Johanna is calm enough to agree to you washing her body. You take your time, scrubbing her from top to bottom. She even jokes around with you towards the end while you quickly wash yourself off.
Hours later, wrapped up in your matching robes on your bed, she thanks you. “I never would have done that without you. Thank you, baby.” It’s so uncharacteristic for her to say, even more so when she tucks her head in your neck.
You love that she feels safe enough with you to be soft.
“There’s no need to thank me. I just want you to be the happiest you can be. This is the start of the rest of our life, baby. I don’t want the past to hold us back.”
She nods, kissing your collarbone. A few moments later, she’s asleep.
You fall asleep shortly after her, a smile on your face.

I’m going a bit mad with the parallels between Snow’s “Is this real?” to Lucy Gray and Peeta’s “Real or not” to Katniss.
The way Snow’s paranoia is already showing in the first, the fact this question is a way to assert his ownership of Lucy Gray and keep himself safe.
The complete opposite of Peeta’s question, something Finnick taught him to do after learning from helping Annie. A question born out of love to ensure someones’s mental health didn’t deteriorate.
Peeta gives Katniss options, asks because he truly wants to know, needs to know. Because he trusts her to tell him the truth.
Snow asks because he doubts Lucy Gray, doubts any sign of affection that doesn’t have an ulterior motive, and there’s only one answer she could give him in that moment that would keep her alive.

Do you think Peeta strangling Katniss affects their relationship in the growing back together phase? Most seem to think it would be Peeta getting reassurance and comfort from Katniss but I find that a little wrong since it was her getting strangled and with the neck covered in bruises
Why does it have to be either one or the other needing/getting reassurance and/or healing from the strangling?
By the end of Mockingjay, both Katniss and Peeta are dealing with complex ptsd, which means both of them have an assortment, a complicated mess of traumas they have to sort through during the grow back together phase. That’s why it’s essential that both of them work with Dr Aurelius. So I absolutely believe that it does impact their relationship, at least a little. But there’s A LOT that is going to affect their relationship during the grow back together phase. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just a fact of living with ptsd.
I agree with your hypothetical “most” that Peeta would absolutely feel guilt and responsibility over his trying to strangle Katniss. He put his hands on her and physically hurt her, left her marked and unable to speak for a significant amount of time. She needed to be hospitalized for her injuries. As a person with childhood abuse in his past, who we can readily assume wanted to break that cycle of violence, Peeta would be devastated to learn that he did that to Katniss. Just like he was devastated seeing himself throw Mitchell into the barbed net in the Capitol. Hijacked or not, he’s going to have to come to terms with the fact that he did it. He’s going to need reassurance from Katniss over it, and would have to learn to forgive himself as part of their growing back together phase.
As for Katniss… what I’ve seen argued is that she was more concerned with the verbal hurts Peeta inflicted upon her when he was recovering from the hijacking than she was with the physical ones… which I can see the case for this textually. She doesn’t fixate on the strangling itself but on the words he speaks and how she thinks he sees her, the “real” her in her self-loathing, after his hijacking. She almost acts like she deserved that violence against her body.
But here’s the thing. If we can assume that Peeta never wants to repeat the abuse his mother heaped on him by abusing those he loves… he’s going to feel like shit for the things he said to her in his pseudo hijacked phase as well. Peeta internalizes the things his mother said about him. She calls him a “stupid, worthless creature” in Katniss’s memory of the bread flashback. And in Catching Fire, Peeta lashes out at Katniss and Haymitch for keeping secrets from him by saying “Like I’m too stupid or inconsequential” to understand or deserve the truth…
Inconsequential is another way of saying worthless, my friend. He repeats what we know his mother has said about him. Because on some level, he believes that it’s true… symptom of trauma and abuse, my friend.
So of course, even if Katniss fixates only on the cruel things that hijacked Peeta says to her rather than the physical act of strangling her, there are still going to be a host of issues they have to deal with, and eventually, they’re going to have to deal with the strangulation aspect as well.
And Peeta’s no stranger to lashing out physically either. In addition to verbally lashing out, Peeta also physically breaks a lamp in that CF scene. Some people will argue that it’s a stretch, but it is still an indicator of his anger on occasion manifesting as physical ACTION. Lest we forget, he somehow kills Brutus in the Quell, and Brutus is billed as one of the stronger, more ruthless Victor Tributes in that arena. Oh and by the way, Beetee had Peeta’s knife at the lightning tree. So what in the fuck was Peeta armed with when he killed Brutus? His bare hands?!?!
Now, Katniss might not actively fixate on those things during Mockingjay, but I find it highly likely that she would flinch or visibly react to the possibility of physical violence when post MJ Peeta gets angry or distraught… because she knows what he’s capable of and knows that he’s lashed out physically before. And that is absolutely going to affect them both.
Do I think Peeta is abusive towards Katniss? No. Absolutely not. I don’t think that at all. But lemme give you a real life example.
I’m married to someone with ptsd. Some of that is a result of having physical violence inflicted on him personally. Some of it is just from witnessing violence and its results in real life. Some of it is from existing for long periods of time in a place where he was constantly in danger of dying. I have never physically hurt him. But one time, shortly after he came home, I playfully smacked his arm (not even all that hard, Anon) while we were hanging a picture on the wall, we were laughing and teasing each other… and he legit froze, completely tense, and whispered “Don’t… don’t do that again.” I had triggered a flashback.
So there is no doubt in my mind that at some point, Everlark has to deal with Peeta triggering a flashback in Katniss to the moment he tried to strangle her.
Conclusion: It’s both of them that will have to deal with it, will need to heal and need reassurance. I just think that it is going to take a lot of work for both of them to process, deal with, and overcome the verbal and physical violence in their pasts. I think really, the discussion you’re probably seeing right now is simply an acknowledgment that Peeta, as loving and soft as he can be, is also fully capable of violence, and he knows it, and he’s going to have to deal with it. He’s no cream puff. He’s got fire in him and is fully capable of biting back. But acknowledging what he has to deal with in terms of him almost strangling Katniss isn’t necessarily a dismissal of what Katniss will have to deal with alongside him. She’ll just be dealing with it from a different aspect and probably at a different pace.

Katniss, Peeta, and the messy in between.
For a while I've been seeing the sentiment of blaming the distance between Katniss and Peeta after the 74th games on Peeta entirely and I think it's rather unfair. It's a messy situation involving two teenagers who are both valid in their feelings at this point in time.
There's multiple things going on at the end of book 1 in regards to Peeta's relationship with both Katniss AND Haymitch that it feel unfair to blame him, when Peeta, like Katniss, more often than not, is the last one to find out other people's intentions/plans, even from his own allies.
Now before I start, I feel like I must preface this by saying I'm not bashing anyone in this analysis so if you're gonna say something rude and mean about my babies, make that U turn cause I aint having it. Also I'm a yapper so this is gonna be really long lol.
It begins on the train tracks. Katniss and Peeta are walking along the tracks when Peeta picks her a small bouquet of wildflowers as Katniss is struggling to convey the kind of danger they are in, while also being paranoid that they're being watched. At this time, she also connects Gale to the wild flowers Peeta has picked for her and its adding her anxiety to the point where she can't even pretend to be happy at Peeta's gift. And that's something he picks up on.
When the train makes a brief stop for fuel, we’re allowed to go outside for some fresh air. There’s no longer any need to guard us. Peeta and I walk down along the track, hand in hand, and I can’t find anything to say now that we’re alone. He stops to gather a bunch of wildflowers for me. When he presents them, I work hard to look pleased. Because he can’t know that the pink and-white flowers are the tops of wild onions and only remind me of the hours I’ve spent gathering them with Gale.
“What’s wrong?” Peeta asks. “Nothing,” I answer. We continue walking, past the end of the train, out where even I’m fairly sure there are no cameras hidden in the scrubby bushes along the track. Still no words come. -THG - Chapter 27
Its not until Haymitch appears and drop the bomb and bows out that Peeta finally catches on that Katniss and Haymitch are still playing up the lover act without his knowledge.
Haymitch startles me when he lays a hand on my back. Even now, in the middle of nowhere, he keeps his voice down. “Great job, you two. Just keep it up in the district until the cameras are gone. We should be okay.” I watch him head back to the train, avoiding Peeta’s eyes. “What’s he mean?” Peeta asks me. “It’s the Capitol. They didn’t like our stunt with the berries,” I blurt out. “What? What are you talking about?”
“So, what you’re saying is, these last few days and then I guess . . . back in the arena . . . that was just some strategy you two worked out.” “No. I mean, I couldn’t even talk to him in the arena, could I?” I stammer. “But you knew what he wanted you to do, didn’t you?” says Peeta. I bite my lip. “Katniss?” He drops my hand and I take a step, as if to catch my balance. “It was all for the Games,” Peeta says. “How you acted.”
-THG - Chapter 27
The truth comes out. Uh oh. It seems this star crossed lovers act when on longer than Peeta expected. Granted, I don't recall him or Katniss ever making their status official, but somewhere between the cave and now, Peeta thought both him and Katniss were on the same page about their feelings. He's not wrong for thinking Katniss liked him back, she does, what he didn't account for is Katniss not knowing herself that she liked him back.
I think Peeta learning the truth through Haymitch and not Katniss starts them on the wrong foot. Because she isn't honest with him for a majority of the time in this scene. Yes, Katniss was worried if the capitol could hear them, but even after Haymitch lets them know they can talk freely, she's still isn't 100% honest with Peeta.
Now here comes the big question.
“It was all for the Games,” Peeta says. “How you acted.” “Not all of it,” I say, tightly holding on to my flowers. “Then how much? No, forget that. I guess the real question is what’s going to be left when we get home?” he says. “I don’t know. The closer we get to District Twelve, the more confused I get,” I say. He waits, for further explanation, but none’s forthcoming
I'd be more than happy to dump all the blame on him for being a pissy baby after the revelation if it weren't for that last part at the end.
Peeta's hurt, yes, but he can rationalize that Katniss had to play lovers for the games, but here, right now, he's asking what he should be expecting when they get home. The words aren't there, but the subtext is loud and clear.
This is a confession. I'm hurt. But I still like you. Do you like me? Will we have something when we go home and the cameras are gone?
Katniss gives him her most honest answer yet. She doesn't know. She's confused and she's getting more confused as they get closer to home. And that's it. That's her answer. But it isn't enough.
Peeta explicitly waits for more of an explanation from Katniss. He hears nothing about her thoughts, feelings, fears. He only knows what she tells him. And when he doesn't get it, there's no other way to take it as a rejection.
So now what?
“Well, let me know when you work it out,” he says, and the pain in his voice is palpable. -THG- Chapter 27-
“No, I ate at the Hob,” I say. “But thank you.” My voice doesn’t sound like my own, it’s so formal. Just as it’s been every time I’ve spoken to Peeta since the cameras finished filming our happy homecoming and we returned to our real lives. -CF- Chapter 1
The camera crews and reporters packed up and went home. Peeta and I assumed the cool relationship we’ve had ever since. -CF- Chapter 2
And this is why I feel like it's so unfair to solely blame Peeta for their distance between THG and CF. This distance came from both sides.
Peeta ends Book one asking Katniss to be honest with him once she figures her own feelings out. But she never does. She just picks up her life and tries go back to what it was before the games.
Was he waiting for an answer? How long did he wait? When did he give up and accept that whatever was the 74th was something his mind made up while he lying half dead in a cave?
Katniss has a valid list of a million things that are clouding her feelings for Peeta. We know them because we're stuck in her head. But Peeta isn't. And to be honest, I don't think he ever knows all of them throughout the trilogy.
I want to tell him that he’s not being fair. That we were strangers. That I did what it took to stay alive, to keep us both alive in the arena. That I can’t explain how things are with Gale because I don’t know myself. That it’s no good loving me because I’m never going to get married anyway and he’d just end up hating me later instead of sooner. That if I do have feelings for him, it doesn’t matter because I’ll never be able to afford the kind of love that leads to a family, to children. And how can he? How can he after what we’ve just been through? -THG- Chapter 27-
And this isn't a silly little fling for Peeta. He's liked Katniss since forever. Has there been other girls that caught his eye? Yes, maybe, but Katniss Everdeen has always been a soft spot for him.
Now, there is a part of him that now as to wonder WTF was going on in the Games, in the Cave and the Interview that followed after. You know the one, where Katniss cries into his chest, buries her face into his chest and practically sits on him the entire time.
Unlike Katniss, Peeta now has to question everything because the rug has just been pulled from underneath him. Yes, he's aware about the lover act and playing it up for the audience, but he isn't aware that Katniss and Haymitch have some crazy telepathic connection to each other that was guiding how Katniss would act towards Peeta in the games. He was even delirious half the time. How far did that go? When did it even begin? He knew that Haymitch was sending packages to Katniss instead of him.
I'm not making this shit up because it's the one thing that Peeta outwardly expresses frustration at (especially) Katniss and Haymitch.
“This has to stop. Right now. This — this — game you two play, where you tell each other secrets but keep them from me like I’m too inconsequential or stupid or weak to handle them.” “It’s not like that, Peeta —” I begin. “It’s exactly like that!” he yells at me. “I have people I care about, too, Katniss! Family and friends back in District Twelve who will be just as dead as yours if we don’t pull this thing off. So, after all we went through in the arena, don’t I even rate the truth from you?” - CF - Chapter 5 -
So what is the point i'm making here? Oh right. I think Peeta is 1000% justified in withdrawing from Katniss after the train tracks. What else is he suppose to do? This isn't something he can bounce back and recover from right away. Taking a step back is the most mature thing to do in this situation. For his sake and hers.
I dislike the notion that his apology denotes complete wrong doing on his part. He's having a human moment and he navigates it better than most would. Yes, he freezes her out, but he doesn't berate her, blame her or is mean to her. He just fucks off and deals with his own emotions and only shows up to play the perfect boyfriend. (And when he does, he never does it with malice OR resentment, at least to from Katniss' obervation.) What other alternative is there? He's genuinely hurt and I feel like expecting him to be comforting and supportive on and off camera when he's hurting inside to be unfair.
We sympathize with Katniss because we're in her head 24/7. We can get to hear her yearn and pine for Peeta after the train tracks. But Katniss also just doesn't mention her every trying to fix her relationship with Peeta between books. She lets the ice freeze over until Peeta comes back to ofter friendship instead. Yes, she has trauma and more hang ups than the average modern day person, but so does Peeta. Trauma is an explanation, not an excuse. If Katniss is allowed three books to figure out her feelings for Peeta, Peeta should be allowed the in between of Book 1 and 2 to figure out his with Katniss.
There should be more nuance when we look at this point in time where Peeta and Katniss' relationship is estranged. Peeta has a lot of reasons why he might want distance from her and I think it's unfair to blame him for it. From him questioning the games, Katniss and Haymitch's involvement with each other and Katniss non-answer of a rejection to his feelings, there's a lot of things he needs to sort out himself. Yes, she saved his life, but she also doesn't answer a lot of questions he asks of her. Katniss doesn't owe him a relationship for what happened in the games, or even her reasons why she's not ready for a relationship. But in turn, we shouldn't blame Peeta if he personally needs time to pick himself up, to figure things out himself. And this is just one thing on top of the trauma that follows both of them after the games. He also just fucking lost his leg LMAO
#THG from Peeta's point of view is mostly him being unintentionally gaslit by everyone#including himself#I was on reddit and I kept seeing people bring up Peeta icing Katniss out after being rejected and blaming it on him#and it was erking me#and I know it's partly because Peeta is mostly flawless as character in Katniss' eyes and they're looking for his flaws#but I think its because they both like each other and they bring the best out each other#I actually think this estrangement is wonderfuly crafted by Suzzane#everlark#katniss everdeen#peeta mellark#the hunger games#thg#ramblings of a madwoman#I might have poke the bear with this one#oh well

The Heroine with 1,001 Faces by Maria Tatar is a powerful book of literary analysis seeking to do for heroines what Joseph Campbell famously did with "the hero's journey" (in which he dismissed female characters as having much purpose at all).
I really enjoyed most of the literary analysis in this book! I particularly loved the monomyth of woman as weaver/truth-teller/spider/spinner. Charlotte and her web, Arachne punished by Athena, Philomena exposing her assault through tapestry. Women and girls are silenced, limited in their creativity, but they use it. Women use their supposed invisibility to find ways around silencing. Telling truth, exposing story, seemed to be women's fundamental purpose in myth and folklore, broadcasting injury and harm to change the world or impose justice, even when their good work is then punished.
Increasingly over the years, the stories that women used to pass on knowledge became vilified in our culture, dismissed as 'old wives' tales' as women became gossipers, storytellers but of stories with little to no value. Yet even as this disdain for women's speech grew, women authors wrote characters who used their curiosity, nosy-ness, gossip, to succeed. And then they wrote heroines who learned to fly under the radar to investigate and expose the truth, from Nancy Drew to Marple to Katniss Everdeen.
So much of the analysis by Tatar was fascinating and brilliant. I did sometimes struggle with the writing however. In academic fashion, she brings in many examples where she'll analyze without a concluding statement or point. Sometimes I was desperate for a sentence at the end of an analysis or even a chapter that summed up a bit, connected it back to the larger thesis. I could have used a more conclusive tone, in other words, throughout a lot of the book, to keep me as a reader on track with the heroine's journey she was showing us.
Still, I loved a lot of this, and will take a ton of it with me moving forward as a reader and writer. I especially loved her point that myth is still evolving, that the women retelling old fairytales and myths right now are doing the work that was always needed, because those stories were never meant to be written, cemented fixtures, but ever-changing stories that shift to fit their times and listeners. Altogether, an interesting if sometimes difficult read.

Part 2 of Everlark and their parents lets go Peeta your turn now.
Now this one is harder. We know very little explicit information about Peeta's family so a lot of this will be inference and my own personal interpretation of the family and their dynamic based on what we do see, what we don't see, and the way Peeta acts, so if you disagree with me that's all good lol.
So first, Peeta grew up in an absuive household. That's not a debate that's explicitly canon. Him mother not only hits him, implied to be with something, but also calls him a worthless creature when he burns the bread for Katniss. No matter that circumstance that is not how you treat your eleven year old child, that is not how you treat any child period, and this clearly isn't a one off or first time. Even though we personally see very little of the abuse on page, I at least think its impact of Peeta is very clear.
This boy has abysmal self esteem, when he discovers Katniss and Haymich have hidden things from him again he feels as if they view him as weak and stupid and too dumb to get it, that's the automatic assumption even though we know that's so far from the truth it's laughable. But for a child that grew up being consistently insulted and belittled it's not that far of a jump to make.
His ability to lie, also I think is relevant here. That kind of ability with words doesn't come from nowhere, that doesn't just happen that's something practiced. A theme with Katniss and Peeta's talents throughout the trilogy is that even the things they are good at and that help them were born from necessity. Katniss is so good with a bow and practical survival skills because she had to be, because even though she grew to love hunting, she and her family would have died without it. Peeta's skill with art comes from working at the bakery it comes from years worth or practise and labor he put in as a child, and I think his ability to lie, manipulate, mask his true feelings and talk his way though things stems from a similar place. His mother is called 'the witch' colloquially, we see she clearly has a temper and resorts to violence and insults quickly. A lot of children who grow up in abuse grow to be very charming, they learn how to lie and manipulate the situation to get themselves out of trouble and to keep themselves and potentially their siblings safe. At least to me Peeta's unmatched ability to impact and morph a situation with just his words could very easily be linked back to his childhood. We all love that Peeta is such a good manipulator but only ever uses it for good, and I think this is partially why, because he doesn't even want to be necessarily, it was a skill born for survival. His mothers cruelty is also shown very much to not be reserved purely for him, she chases starving children away from their empty bins, speaks awfully about the seam and the people from it.
His father is a complicated man. he clearly dose have love for Peeta and is shown many times to be a kind man at his core. But he is passive. He may bring Katniss cookies and make generous trades, he may have been the one to impart that inherent kindness we see in him onto Peeta, and may have been the only safe adult in the house, but he is passive. We don't know the extent of how much he steps in when his wife starts acting out, but from what we can see of her effect of Peeta clearly not enough. He also doesn't come to live with him after the games, none of them do. And while I understand practically that might not be the most reasonable situation, a newly disabled, traumatised sixteen year old boy was still left to live alone. His family may have visited often, they still talk we see him going to dinner with them, but I think their lack of mention speaks more than anything else here.
The relationship between his parents was also not exactly the best model to grow up observing. When he is five years old his dad tells Peeta is was in love with another woman, he points out her child to him, explains how he lost her. There is no addendum of how much he loves his mother now, how it was in the past. Peeta grew up with parents he was acutely aware did not love each other and from what we see and here, don't even pretend to act like it.
Now how dose this relate to Katniss. This first part is more my own speculation so ignore me if you disagree, but Katniss in the first games mentions Peeta doing certain things with her she remembers her parents doing, and wondering where he learnt it from, thinking surely not his own parents. And I think she's right, I think he learnt it from hers. Peeta is observant, I think after his father pointed out Katniss and her mother he payed attention, not just to Katniss but to her parents as well. I think he was a little fascinated by this family, these parents who clearly adore each other these children with skin clear of bruises who have never been made to feel like nothing from there parents who clearly think the world of them. There was six years from when Peeta noticed her to Mr Everdeens death, that's six years for him to observe this family and their love. Not obsessively, not even knowingly, but I think it happened. I think the Everdeens weren't just Katniss's reference for a relationship but Peeta's as well. I don't think she was the only one drawing comparisons, even if he didn't completely realise what he was doing.
(Additional evidence for this pointed out by @intellectual-punk in Mockingjay Haymitch tells Katniss the doctors showed Peeta the propo of her singing The Hanging Tree and he recognized the song and Katniss says she doesn’t know how he could as he never heard her sing it. Haymitch says he remembers her father singing it as their fathers traded. Peeta hasn't heard this song since he was 11, he’s 17 at the time of remembering it. So for him to remembering it after so long after last hearing it and clearly not hearing it around the house we can imagine that her father must have sang it near every time the two men traded and that Peeta was either specifically listening to his singing as he knows from his father that that is how Mr Everdeen won over Mrs Everdeen or he was just generally paying attention to the man either on his own or in relation to Katniss.)*Found in notes {Thank you so much for this}
I also think, going back to people seeking out the familiar, that Katniss reminded him in certain ways of his father. They're both quiet, both people associated with providing food in one way or another. I think he see's her in the way that while they both clearly love him, they both struggle to show him, leaving him to question it for a long time. But where his father fails to protect him, Katniss doesn't. Katniss doesn't have his fathers passivity, far from it, Katniss Everdeen is anything but passive. She actively works to protect him and others, she speaks out loudly when she finds something wrong, she still has that kindness, but it never gets in the way of what's necessary.
This is also where I see his mother come in, I think he dose see some similarities there. In their tempter, in the sharp way they can use their words, in the way she underestimates him in the beginning and even hurts him on occasion, shoving him into the vase (I think?) and cutting his hands after the first interview. But in so many ways Katniss is the opposite. Peeta may have developed a crush because of her voice, but he falls in love because of the way she helps people, because he knows her intrinsically and intrinsically Katniss is someone who cares. He always comments on her healing ability, even if she finds it lacking it's clearly something he loves about her, hands that heal instead of hurt. His mother was cruel to everyone especially those less fortunate, meanwhile Katniss would give everything on her to those who need it more. He see's the similarities yes, and unconsciously that familiarity might be a small drive towards her, but ultimately he loves Katniss for the ways in which she is different from his mother, the ways in which his mother failed, for the ways in which she stepped in where his father fell short. As well as for a lot of other reasons of course, but I think his parents impact is definitely something to consider.

If anything were to ever be released from Peeta's POV during the series, I think what I would be most interested in is what was going through his head during The Mockingjay Trial.
Peeta's thoughts during Mockingjay as a whole would be interesting. Peeta is ultimately cunning. We all joke about how Peeta would've ran 13 if he'd been the one that was saved, but I can't imagine Snow was having a particularly fun time with him either. Peeta knows how to communicate with the Capitol. I wonder if part of the reason Peeta was abused so horribly was not to torture Katniss, but because it's very possible there was a real possibility Peeta could've won the war from the inside by turning Snow's people against him with his own personal showmanship. "If it weren't for the baby" is a perfect example of how capable Peeta could be of doing just that.
I imagine once Peeta begins to regain his mind, it doesn't take long for him to realize the multiple problems that exist within president Coin. The problems Gale decided not to acknowledge in the proper manner.
Gale and Katniss are incredibly close. Now, I know we all like to poke our fun at Gale, (I'm definitely guilty of it,) but Gale is a genuinely complex character. He was a kid too. That doesn't take away from how he still did wrong, but you cannot look at him from a black and white lense when legitimately viewing his character. He does have depth.
Gale and Katniss are close because they are similar. They lose their fathers in the same accident, they learn to survive the same way. Katniss speaks throughout the series of how similar they are. It would not at all be impossible for Peeta to assume Katniss was radicalized the same way Gale was since he remembers their relationship despite the hijacking.
I think this is what hurts Peeta the most during the voting for the final Hunger Games. Peeta is at a severe disadvantage to reading Katniss still. His mind is better, and most likely he had already begun therapy in seriousness and was already improving mentally. But he and Katniss have not begun to grow back together yet. He no longer has access to her obvious tells. And yes, Katniss's thoughts are obvious to her inner circle. To everyone else, she is a mystery. Katniss loves him, but he is no longer in her inner circle at this point.
I don't think Peeta would realize the truth of Katniss's vote until she shoots Coin instead of Snow, which I think is the point for many to realize the amount of deep set problems there truly were with Coin. Most of the time it takes someone doing something extreme to make people pause and think.
Peeta is already having to put the pieces back together in his mind about Katniss. I think The Mockingjay Trial would probably be the tipping point of Peeta's recovery due to the testimonies, the evaluations. Something I've wondered is if Peeta was even allowed to testify since he had been hijacked. Honestly, I would assume that he wasn't. Leaving him off to the sidelines, forced to watch as someone he knows he used to be close to be examined live for the nation to see, to be picked and torn apart. I imagine that maybe the general public was not allowed to see any footage, but based off of Plutarchs offer for Katniss to be on a new singing program during their final conversation in 'Mockingjay,' it seems Katniss was correct in thinking there was most likely a live broadcast of her in the Training Center available to watch. Most likely Haymitch was allowed a peak. And through Haymitch, probably Peeta. I don't think it would be until the entire nation is forced to learn the "truth" about The Mockingjay that Peeta has the same moment as Katniss has in 'The Hunger Games,' when suddenly he realizes just how much he does know about her.
I would think this time would be when Peeta and Haymitch also make peace with their relationship as well. Most likely there were probably a few, very hard to have conversations between the two of them during the trial. About Katniss, about Haymitch's promise to both of them during 'Catching Fire,' about being unable to save him.
Peeta returns to District 12 at the earliest opportunity allowed. Probably for a few reasons. It's his home, it is ultimately where he belongs. But I also think there's probably a very large part of him that wants confirmation for what he's sure he already knew. Her thoughts when shooting Coin. When she voted yes. I think The Mockingjay Trial is probably when Peeta decided he wanted to be her friend again. That it was when he finally remembered her. And I'd just really like to see that, even as a short story.

It's about that time. Peeta's ceasefire bit.
Should come as no surprise that I disagree with him. If I were there in 13, I'd probably react just like the other rebels. But like Gale, I also understand why he did it and can't honestly blame him too much. In general, I stand with Gale's assessment of it.
He points out how Peeta emphasized (aggressively, for which I give him credit) that Katniss was not involved in the rebels' plan. However, as Katniss notes, even if she didn't know the extent of what she was doing when she shot the forcefield, she knew she was aiming at the Capitol, the real enemy. Peeta's presentation of her as confused, as lacking agency, may be nice to protect her should the rebels fail, but it also is contributing to rebel failure. He doesn't know that she'll be the Mockingjay, but he's already discrediting the Mockingjay. "There are Districts where the resistance is shakier." For people who are on the fence, Peeta calling for a ceasefire is discouraging. Who wants to join a rebellion when one of the top celebrities they've come to associate with it is saying it's pointless and downplaying the actions of the other?
Now, it isn't clear why Peeta said what he did. Maybe he was tortured in a way that isn't visually apparent yet. Maybe all it took was Snow threatening him or Katniss. Maybe Snow's manipulative enough to even convince Peeta not just to say it, but that it's the truth, that violent rebellions are unnecessary and maybe we can all just get along if we talk it out (never gonna happen). And while a younger me blamed him more, now that I'm older than the main cast of characters, I see more clearly that he's just a kid. Shit, I believed some dumb things at 17, too, until I learned better. Difference was I wasn't a public political figure. There are 17-year-olds out there with stronger conviction, yes, not dismissing them. But for a kid like Peeta, a regular 17-year-old who's not had it easy but certainly suffered less than the rest of his District, if the President has you captured and orders you to present a certain plan on TV, it's not hard to imagine just going along with it and doing as he says. Snow is a scary guy who could easily intimidate Peeta. He manipulates Peeta and exploits how good he is at performing on screen. As Gale says, the ceasefire idea comes from Snow, "but it sounds so reasonable coming out of Peeta's mouth."
I don't hate Peeta for complying, but this announcement did put a dent in the rebel cause, and it's unclear how much he really resisted before agreeing to say it. I'll comment on the other propos from him as they come up, but this one is the most forgivable, imo. And, as always, Gale is correct.
I love how Katniss reacts after processing all this. She thinks of what the Capitol has done and knows that a ceasefire is nonsense. They could never. She's inspired to act in the face of Peeta's call for inaction.

“Is it true? Could I have saved him?”
“I have a message for president snow.”
Thomas tried his hardest and still lost one of the only people he trusted (newt)
Katniss fought so hard and still lost one of the people she allowed into her life (finnick)
Newt lived to save Thomas and died to make sure he was safe
Finnick was tasked with getting the two from 12 out alive and died doing it
Johanna is just a scared little girl who didn’t realise the consequences of her actions
Gally was just so attached to the lifestyle he had and was labelled as angry for being upset at the change
Mags is forgotten but will always be such an important part of why they lived
Jeff gave his life to make sure that their key out lived
Gale complying to every word coin said ended up being the reason katniss hated him in the end
Teresa giving in to WCKD ended up killing every opportunity she had with Thomas before they even existed
Without beetee they wouldn’t have gotten as far as they did but his acknowledgment is near none existent
Frypan got 28 children out of the last city and was quick to learn how to drive to help save Minho but where is his acknowledgment?
Peeta was held against his will and tortured because he cared about a girl who happened to be strongly disliked by the strongest man in their nation
Minho was mentally put through hell because he wanted to save his best friends who happened to be hated and needed by the people who captured him

It's endlessly fascinating to me how Western fans of The Hunger Games break down when they're being confronted with the fact they're the Capitol. It's easy to point fingers at the Met Gala and deem ourselves the oppressed, but we're wearing the clothes that were produced in unfair labour conditions and doomscrolling on our phones whose cobalt was mined by children.
We know there is a fairly large middle class in the Capitol. We know that because Katniss' journey is that of an outsider looking in. Any non-American—even Western non-Americans—grew up with this glorified image of the United States. The sitcom characters do great regardless what job they have & the American Dream is instilled on our minds. But, just like Katniss, we slowly learn that life isn't perfect. High debts, shitty housing situations, a rigid class system, and predatory militaries.
And I think a lot of people forget that this is part of the average Capitol lifestyle. It's really interesting, because being "from the Capitol" is seen by some as an accusation. That's not who we want to be; it's so much easier to be the oppressed.
But I think we are mistaken by seeing the Capitol that way. TBOSAS has shown us that the class system is rigid. The same important surnames show up decades later. And it's not any different to many Western societies—wealth is inherited. In my country, Germany, it's practically the only way to become wealthy. There's always the outlier who becomes wealthy and allows us to kid ourselves, but that's simply not the truth for most of us.
And just like the middle to lower class in the Capitol likes to watch the Games and pretend they're better than, many middle to lower class Westerners have the immigrant as a subject to kick down toward. It's similar imagery conjured, whereupon the Games show the Capitol citizens how brutal the Districts are, and the exaggeration of immigrant crime does the same. Middle to lower class Westerners prefer aligning themselves with the upper class in the false sense that they, one day, will be with them, which is exactly what the Capitol people do when they vie for the newest fashion to align themselves with the upper class.
As Westerners, we are the Capitol. Because the Capitol is more complex than what Katniss thinks it is, and because we need to recognise the structures within our countries and the structures abroad.

hello!! first of all just wanted to say that i cert much enjoy all of your district 1 thoughts!! do you have any other velvereen thoughts to share? she’s still a mystery to me
also- i always refer to you as spiral but i noticed you have been using the tag #roka ramble and spiraling
is roka your actual name?? would you prefer to me switch to calling you that instead?? (or something else entirely?)
ps- loved your district 8 fashion post! any thoughts on d1 fashion??
okay i think i have asked way too much in one ask so sorry and ily <3
No need to apologise I enjoy getting asks and try my best answering them 😊
You can refer to me whatever you like I don't mind and have multiple nicknames irl, rokaya is my real name and roka is a nickname my parents and siblings refer to me as a short cut
I think fashion in D1 changed over the years I headcanon that by the events of tbosas they had 70s.80s insperd fashion by Katniss time they had a quite luxury outfits there is also alot of elements of businesses wear while they are the wealthiest distric they still would prioritize comfort and practicality and there is work uniform for every business
As for the Velvereen thoughts I have plenty
Like I said before I I headcanon her being a triplet she is the youngest out of her sisters by 10 minutes satina is the eldest twin and mullberry is the middle twin
Due to the fact that Velvereen faced alot of envy and people often tried to take advantage of her and her family because of their wealth she often has a hard time trusting people and always second guess their intentions she also has constant fear that people are judging her and constantly side eye whoever she suspects is judging her
(Sorry got to add my silly shipping headcanons)
That's one of the reasons why she befriended and eventually feel in love with facet I headcanon that facet is someone who wears his heart on his sleeve and doesn't ask for anything and is also a bad liar he Also doesn't judge anyone for being emotional , she found comfort in the fact that she can always get the truth out from facet and that he would never use her and he didn't care that she is from a wealthy family
Her favourite sweet is chocolate cake with strawberry cream and facet got her one on their first date
I headcanon that district 1 has a program to help poorer citizens of the district and Velvereen is a volunteer in this program she helps making food for the poor citizens and bake for orphans
Was closed off from friendship for 2 years when she learned that her friends only befriended her for her money when she was a kid
Is suprisingly a good Baker she Also plays tennis she is a average student her personality is more athletic than academic
People assume she is a tomboy but really she just keeps her dresses for special occasions she Also DESPISES eyeshadow satina can beg her to put some all she wants she won't add eyeshadow
She fidgets with anything around her neck wither it's her collar her zipper and even though she is not a accessories person she always has a necklace on because it's her go to for fidgeting
She absolutely hated Palmyra first it was her being late to bring food then it was her getting angry at Velvereen for sharing with facet and telling her to abounded him then throwing the biggest fit when she saw facet comforting Velvereen and making it clear she is acting that way because she hates livia and so Velvereen should hate facet wich started a shouting match another one happened when Palmyra suggested that Velvereen act more "Capitol like " and that the Capitol viewers could relate to her if they saw her like them wich Velvereen wasn't having it how could they relate to her when they don't view her as a human being and gawk at her like an animal and have delightfully watched as d1 children were murdered she called Palmyra crazy and delusional right to her face
She gave Leo's friends a hug at his funeral and the next day bought them food and toys and new clothes and they shared their memories about Leo
Her nickname is venny and she rides a bike
She was weary of panlo and terrified of lamina because it was the boy from D9 who killed jade and the girl from 7 that killed Leo despite remembering how terrified both kids were when they killed them and facet reminding her that none of the tributes are their enemies
She has a bit of temper and might unintentionally lash out and scream if someone got on her nerves
When the hunger was taking over Velvereen started biting her hand and at some point facet had to pull her hand away because she was close to breaking skin
Kinda assumed that she could fight if she grabbed a weapon and wacked people over the head with it like a tennis ball and facet was looking at her like:😑😑😑😑that won't work, and she replied with: I KNOW BUT WHAT ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?
Also ofcourse she and facet cuddled every night at the zoo she was going back and forth between being like: I have to kill to survive to stupid teenage girl in love who is happy her boyfriend finds her beautiful even at her dishevelled and dirty state (sorry)
I was once doodling her and accidentally made her very tall so headcanon that she is rather tall don't ask about her hight I am bad at measuring it
