Finished the book and one thing I absolutely HATED is how Snow drags out Haymitch's torment. Once the games are over and Haymitch is forced into submission, Snow milks that shit for days on end. He puts him in a gilded cage!!!! And he makes him play the role of the good little propaganda puppet. All the while endlessly feeding him milk and bread. Snow is absolutely deranged
And he tries to do the same thing with Katniss. In catching fire, once she realizes the danger her loved ones are in, Katniss is ready to play the role of the puppet - to do everything she can to convince Snow and Panem.
Snow immediately starts puppeting her into this twisted, deranged image by having the capitol vote on her wedding dress and by making her wear it for the interviews.
But Cinna undermines all that! He frees Katniss from Snow's grasp and helps her reclaim her dignity. He transforms her from Snow's propaganda puppet into the greatest symbol of the rebellion. Cinna gives her wings to fly free... and it's the biggest fuck you to Snow
#sunrise on the reaping#hated that part and how degrading and humiliating it was for Haymitch#it highlights how katniss was successful because she was surrounded by people who helped her every step of the way#people who didnt just offer quiet comfort and support like plutarch and effie did for Haymitch#katniss had people who were willing to put themselves on the line and to risk their safety for her and the rebellion#sotr#sunrise on the reaping spoilers#sotr spoilers#the hunger games#katniss everdeen#haymitch abernathy#cinna

call me an albatross but tigris won’t be haymitch’s stylist in sotr. There’s no way snow would allow his relative the stain of designing for d12, esp because she has been in the practice for decades by the 50th games
#snow would see it as an insult to his image#even if he doesnt promote their relationship#hed still want her to design for the best and most exclusive districts#even katniss thought cinna had bad luck getting 12#until he said he chose it specifically#idk its just too much fan service for a collins book#maybe im wrong#you can laugh at me on march 18 if so#the hunger games#sunrise on the reaping#thg#haymitch abernathy#tigris snow#catching fire#mockingjay#katniss everdeen#cinna

one of the most heart-wrenching things about thg universe is that you feel the loss of who each character would be outside the circumstances of their birth almost as acutely as you feel the loss of the characters themselves.
sure, we know what lucy gray and her family would be doing in a different world; she’d be dancing and singing and making music which defines a cultural identity. but what about the others? would haymitch have been a hilarious, loving father with a family had he not been forced to survive 47 other children’s brutal deaths? would finnick have been a charismatic and beloved actor, bringing joy to immeasurable people on his own terms? would beetee and wiress have worked together to develop technology to make it easier to connect loved ones far and wide? what would reaper and annie have given to the world, or thresh, or rue, or even coral or cato or glimmer or clove?
if katniss wasn’t half-starving and forced to spend each day hunting to feed her family, would archery be her true passion? or if she’d been a well-sustained little girl with access to art supplies, would she have spent her time sketching captivating dresses? she picks up ropes and making fish hooks quickly—could her dexterity have lent itself to knitting, sewing, or crocheting with vibrant yarns and fabrics? there’s so much evidence that katniss finds clothing inspiring and empowering, even when she dismisses it as frivolous. she likes being pretty, she just hates the circumstances under which she’s made to look pretty. cinna shows her that beauty has its own power, and there are several moments in her interactions with cinna and his designs that make me wonder who she’d be if she had space for art and creativity in her life.
conversely, peeta has had art in his life since he was a small child, but for him, art has always been entangled with his trauma. he could bake and decorate well because he learned from his mother, a mother who beat him his whole life. but his talent grows, not only as a survival tool in the first games, but when he paints rue on the floor of the training center before the second games. his art becomes not only a symbol of his trauma, but a means of resistance and solidarity. in a world where peeta’s intrinsic kindness and loving heart had been nurtured and welcomed rather than abused, could he have been a painter, helping people find collective meaning in the simple realities of life?
could katniss and peeta have still found each other in another world, a world without the horrors they were raised with, and bonded over their love of art? could they have been each other’s muses?
maybe they find their way to share art, after the events of mockingjay, as part of their process of healing and falling in love with each other. when they’re finally safe and have been for a long time, maybe katniss fashions peeta an easel for him to paint in their living room. after months of watching him gaze out the window and paint the changing leaves, katniss takes to knitting on a rocking chair in the other corner of the living room to steady her restless hands. they work silently as the days go by, quietly exchanging the things they’ve made to give each other the reassurance and love neither could ever fully convey with words.
and maybe one day, when they learn there’s a baby on the way due in midwinter, katniss takes a page from peeta’s sketchpad and starts to plan a series of sweaters and hats and socks she can knit for the baby. and peeta goes to the little nursery upstairs and starts working on a mural, so the baby will have something beautiful to look at every day. they work together to design the perfect baby blanket for their child, to ensure they will always be wrapped in a layer of protection and love by their parents.
but even if they find creativity and beauty in their lives after the end of mockingjay, the art they make will simply never be what that art could have been had they not faced what they faced. art comes from suffering, yes, but the human condition has so much suffering as is, and we’d never know what kind of art they’d make if they hadn’t experienced trauma of a distinctly sadistic and inhuman nature. but maybe their children, raised in a better world with love and protection and safety and joy and creativity and expression, will be the ones to create the art peeta and katniss never could.

Cinna being killed in private for Katniss to see because her rebellion happened in moments that could be hidden, and Portia being executed live on television because Peeta was always using the publicity for his moments of rebellion. Snow took the two people of the capitol who made them feel safest and showed that their rebellion would be dealt with exactly how it was dished out

“What must it be like, I wonder, to live in a world where food appears at the press of a button? How would I spend the hours I now commit to combing the woods for sustenance if it were so easy to come by? What do they do all day, these people in the Capitol, besides decorating their bodies and waiting around for a new shipment of tributes to rill in and die for their entertainment?”

“Whose idea was the hand holding?” asks Haymitch. “Cinna’s,” says Portia. “Just the perfect touch of rebellion,” says Haymitch.
Just thinking about Cinna's role in starting the rebellion. I don't think anything he did was on accident. The perfect touch of rebellion.

Something I’ve seen as a popular discussion is that Katniss has no trusted adults that have her best interests at heart. The adults in her life are 1) dead, 2) incompetent, or 3) inevitably use her for their own ends. The classic example of the third one is Haymitch, who forces her to join the Rebellion with no actual say in the matter.
However, the person I’ve never seen talked about in this context is Cinna.
I think something we often forget is that Cinna was with the rebellion the entire time. In the first book, Cinna is just a guy doing his job. His styles are bold, and may gently smack of rebellion, but he’s not using Katniss any more than any other stylist uses their tribute or in any way that he would not have used any other tribute. He’s just doing his job.
In book 2, this changes. He presents himself as Katniss’ friend from the outset, and frequently calls her and helps her with things. We see this from Katniss’ perspective so it feels very normal. But Katniss is a 16 year old, heavily traumatized girl. Cinna’s age is never concrete in the story, but according to Google, it is widely accepted that he is in his 30s. As a former teenage girl, the way adult men treated me felt very normal at the time, but as an adult, I can now clearly see it wasn’t. Additionally, Katniss is a known unreliable narrator of her own story, so it makes sense she never questioned this.
Knowing that part of Suzanne Collins message is a criticism of how teenage starlets are abused and taken advantage of by the power hungry in Hollywood, this starts to look a bit more sinister. I’m not saying that Cinna was a sexual predator, because I don’t believe he was, but I do think that he was an adult man in his 30s who was a member of a rebellion that went far out of his way to earn the trust of a traumatized teenage girl.
Still, this wouldn’t necessarily be a problem if he hadn’t altered her wedding dress. He did not ask Katniss if he could change the dress, and he did not warn her what would happen and allowed her to be confronted by the reality of it on a live broadcast. And what he truly did when he altered the dress was turn Katniss from a face of resistance into the symbol of the rebellion. She became the mockingjay in that moment.
Katniss didn’t care, in fact loved it, because she planned to die in that arena and send Peeta home. It didn’t matter to her, because how could anything matter at that point? But Cinna knew what Katniss didn’t, because he was a part of the rebellion the whole time. He would have known about the plot to remove the tributes from the arena. He knew that turning her into the mockingjay would put her at the center of a war that she wanted no part of, and he did it anyways, without even the curtesy of asking her permission (even if she would not have understood what she agreed to). And she did not question it because she trusted him, which was by design.
I’m not saying that Cinna was a bad person and that he didn’t help get Katniss through some hard shit, but he was just as much responsible for everything that happened as every other adult in the rebellion. I could even see the argument that he did it to protect Katniss, because maybe he knew Coin wanted Peeta, not her. Maybe he was making her the symbol so that Coin would have to rescue her specifically. I’m just saying that he is the one who sealed her fate as the mockingjay, and I don’t think it was an accident or that his intentions were totally pure.
