Orlando’s Evening Out Kathleen Hale Orlando and Grace Visit the circus and inevitably Orlando is caught up in the performances. Hale’s wonderful creation was turned down by every publisher until Noel Carrington spotted the potential and the marmalade cat is now part of our psyche. This copy was gifted to me by @lesleybarnes and there’ll be a Design For Today project with Lesley coming your way. #orlando #kathleenhale #thecircus #noelcarrington #lesleybarnes https://www.instagram.com/p/BskaEbjgOXg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=u9qqjgsxlafp

“When it got late and the fire burnt low, they went to bed with their whiskers singed and smelling of wood smoke, but very happy.” From “Orlando The Marmalade Cat: A Camping Holiday” by Kathleen Hale. Man, picture books were different in 1938! This one has zero plot and many weird tangents, but my 3yo loves it. ~ #orlandothemarmaladecat #kathleenhale #orlandothemarmaladecatacampingholiday #vintagepicturebook #picturebook #kidlit #childrensfiction #picturebookillustration #picturebooks #picturebookstagram #childrensbook #kidlitart #picturebooksofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CIOnY01HmE0/?igshid=3lvgv712evyr

#WTFWednesday - Would you buy a stalker's book and encourage that behavior?
#WTFWednesday – Would you buy a stalker’s book and encourage that behavior?
Kathleen Hale’s book, Kathleen Hale is a Crazy Stalker will be released by Grove Atlanticthis June and I’m having a hard time finding humor in the scenario. I don’t care how “hilarious” her six essays promise to be. Grove Atlantic states the book is, “From a fresh gonzo American voice, a captivating and hilarious collection of essays unlike anything you’ve ever read before, exploring sexual…

"Never a harasser nor a stalker be"
I'm paraphrasing Polonius' advice to Laertes from Hamlet here. But after reading the frightening Kathleen Hale piece in The Guardian, I thought I'd just share an excerpt from an interview I did with Daniel Blanchard, where I talk about how I handle bad reviews:
N.B. NO STALKING.
End of Story.

“If I could, I would hug the whole world, and even the rainbows would be my friends! . . . I guess those cookies really are taking effect.”
Despite popular opinion, I loved No One Else Can Have You.
Was it perfect? No.
Was it the next literary genius novel? No.
But it was fucking fun, and silly, and I laughed so hard. I kept taking pictures of the funny parts and forcing them on others while I was reading it. Of course, out of context most of the replies were, "What the fuck are you reading?!", but that's really part of the fun.
Kippy Bushman, oh my...Kippy was a mess. She was far from being a perfect heroine; she was neurotic.
She was...
Clumsy.
Awkward.
"Ardent"
(In case you weren't sure, the zombie is representative of Kippy. Oh, poor Kippy.)
Kippy is smart as shit, awkward, damaged, weird, and I rooted for her hardcore.
The story was a little slow at times, and the supporting characters and fuckery that ensued was frustrating as all hell - but it was supposed to be. Kippy finds herself trapped in the middle of a town that would rather convict the wrong person in her best friend's murder, so they can go back to pretending it never happened, than to actually find the real murderer.
Toss in some psychobabble from her head shrinker father, Dommy, a mental health support group full of whacky characters, and a stint in the looney bin - and you've got a ridiculous, quirky murder mystery that made me laugh (and snort) out loud.

No One Else Can Have You... Random Thoughts
So I'm reading this book pictured above. And in case you don't know e personally ( which you probably don't) I check all of my books out on Goodreads and epicreads) Well the reviews for this book are ranging. I mean it has a HIGH 3 BUT the first like 6 actual reviews are all 1's or 2's of them are from big name YA bloggers. And Then you get the people going on and on about the cover and.... Anyway. so I'm not even 36% of the way through... Putting that out there... And I was having some emotions. POSITIVE ONES Kathleen. GOOD. So a few of the negative people are saying how the protagontist is awkward and the smalltown life is unrealistic.Well I want to put two things out there... 1) Hale did research into this particular small town. She thanks them at the end. So kind of like the town in Hand's "Unearthly" it is going to be accurate. And I live in a small town where a high crime is just went on... and the town is acting... Just like this. They want it solved quickly rather than accurately because they want 'Justice'. 2) The Protagonist Kippy.... I don't find her awkward. I am sure the world does. If Hale wrote herself into this novel we need to talk... Because I see myself in Kippy. I will finish this book for this reason. I have to know that there is hope. Kippy doesn't like to be alone. She wants someone to be in the same room even is they are doing a different activity. She is huggy and clingy. And I'm reading this going, "Crap...Hale read your diary and wrote this about you." The things that the Ruth Fried wrote and said to Kippy before she was murdered are the exact same things my friends said to me. And it kills me reading them again. I have to know that there is hope.
So yes YA blogger out there. There are people who don't know how to handle their emotions/ love and are awkward. They are still a good protagonist. They are still intriguing because they ask the right questions of the right people. Because they are quippy. (HA!)

Cold jellied soup, prawns and an omelette surprise ... Kathleen Hale Lithograph from Orlando, A Trip Abroad, published in 1943 by Country Life. Hale and Noel Carrington struck a deal to alternate her Orlando titles between Puffin& Country Life during the war when the huge success of Puffin helped to sell the larger Country Life titles. #kathleenhale #orlando #catsofinstagram #noelcarrington #french

Henrietta the Faithful Hen Kathleen Hale autolithograph from her 1943 book for Transatlantic Arts. Hale struggled to escape from her success with the Orlando titles but her other books such as Manda, and Henrietta are well worth a look. Last night I was intrigued to discover from @michaelparkinfineart that other unfinished books exist, all rejected by publishers who only wanted another Orlando. She contributed a memorable episode to Desert Island Discs, which is still available to download. #kathleenhale #orlando #henrietta #hen #autolithography #cowells #desertislanddiscs
